Preview is Slooow Loading JPGs

Hello,
I am running 10.6.4 on a 15" MBP with a 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 4 GB RAM.
Recently, Preview is taking a looong time to load even small JPGs and TIFFs, the image appearing in square tiles starting at the top left and working to the bottom right. It takes 30 seconds or more. Historically, Preview opened these files almost instantaneously. Am I missing something? Is there a way to bring back the old speed?
Thanks!
Michael

Where are the files located? If on the local disk, have you recently run Disk Utility or Disk Warrior or similar to check for directory problems? If on a network share, how are you connecting to the share, what OS is running on the machine the share is on, and are there any other connection issues? Is anything else running slowly? What happens if you access the files from a different account? What happens if you use something other than Preview to open those files?

  • Problem loading jpg's with xml

I have looked through the forum to see if my problem was
raised but I could not find any topic that could help me out. So
    here's my problem.
I have a simple photo viewer that load jpg's via xml.
Everything work perfect when I preview the movie in Flash or on my
desktop but as soon as it's uploaded to the server the jpg's so not
load. And everything is placed correct on the server.
    Anyone got a clue why?

Ok I found out that if you go directly to the movie in the
browser (http//www.url.com/name.swf) then it work perfect and the
    photos load.
I got two other movies in the same html document. It's surely
here the problem occur. But why and what can I do to solve
    it?

  • Preview won't load

I'm running Mavericks, version 10.10.2.  Preview won't load at all.  I am able to get it to load when in test mode but not in my own user mode.  What's up?

    10.10.2 is Yosemite.
    Do a backup.
    Quit Preview.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Remove the following. You may not find them all. Restart and test.

  • Cannot Load JPG Files From Canon Powershot S2 IS

    Hi,
I'm having a problem loading JPG files from my Canon Powershot S2 IS. When I plug the camera into the USB port, I get the Canon Camera/DV Twain Driver with a list of images to import. They are all JPEG images, which is my camera's native format. (I don't think RAW is available on this model.) But when I select an image by double-clicking it, it is imported into Photoshop Album (Starter Edition 3.0), but has somehow been converted to TIFF.
The problem I have with this is that the TIFF format uses up about 7 time more disk space than the original JPG and I can't afford a new hard drive right now. I simply don't have enough disk space available to import all my images. (I plan to back them up on CD after importing.)
I see that Edit -> Preferences -> Scanner has an option to save files as JPEG, but Edit -> Preferences -> Camera has no such option.
Please help! How do I get the images to stay as JPEG?
    Thanks!

  • Using large loaded jpg to heighten clarity/crispness?

    Hi There,
I have a gallery on my flash site.  The way I'm working this is as follows:
    layer 1 that runs through all frames:  var loader1:Loader = new Loader();
when a button is clicked, the playhead goes to a certain frame and does this:
    loader1.unloadAndStop();
    holder2.addChild(loader1);
    loader1.x = 0;
    loader1.y = 0;
    loader1.alpha = 0;
    loader1.load(new URLRequest("damoimages/med.jpg"));
As a side note, I am also using Greensock's liquid stage to scale this holder up to a certain set size.
Now I've noticed that when I blow up the screen, my loaded jpg loses some of its crispness, which is to be expected.  I've also noticed this is remedied if I import a larger image than I need I get a nice crisp image.  For example, I have been loading in an image that is 960 x 640 into my 'holder' which is 960 x 640.  But when I load a larger image (1200 x 800 or larger) say, the image is nice and crisp.  Only problem is it fills up the whole screen until I begin to resize my browser, then it snaps into place and is scaled correctly by staying crisp.  Any way to tell this loaded image to not come in at it's big size, but to scale down appropriately w/o me scaling down my browser window?
    Phew!
    Thanks, as always.
    R

You need to wait until the image has loaded before you can try to resize it in any way, though you could scale the holder ahead of time if you know the dimensions you will be working with and are consistent with them.

  • Preview won't open JPG image on a USB stick.

Preview won't open 'JPG' images downloaded from a USB stick. I get this message, "The image"IMG_0091.JPG" could not be opened"  It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn't recognise.
I can see the thumbnail, but they won't open. Can I change this in some way? And, no, I can't download them again as I have erased them from the memory card, but they are saved in iphoto.

You can try deleting the .plist. Quit Preview first.

  • PDA load JPG with Win CE 5

    Dear LV PDA users.
I have posted some problems with the PDA load JPG Image.
    Downtracing the failure showed:
The PDA module needs some dll from the windows mobile
    version of Win CE.
I always got the same failure while loading the 10 KB 24Bit color
JPG file. The Error code 2 tells me that I haven't enough memory
to load the file. The decompressed bitmap is about 288 KB.
In this case it turned out that LabVIEW mallocs about 20MB while
    loading th picture.
    The question is: WHY?
Now its clear why I cant load the pictures. My device has just
32 MB of FLASH and 32 MB od RAM.
Btw. be carefull using picture controls. Everytime yo add
somthing to the existing picture the memory used by the
control increases. This leads to emormus memory
    consumption in loops.

The Win CE email set-up utility asks to input "Connection", "POP3 Host", "User ID" and "Password".
I've inputted (in the above order) "None" - "mail.btinternet.com" - "my usual BT email address" - "my correct password" (all as shown from my lap-top's Outlook Express BT mail settings, which work fine).
When I click on either "Connect" or "Send & Receive messages", I get an error message box, saying -

Anyone any ideas how to set WinCE up for emails?
Or is BT Yahoo email not supported on CE?

    Hi David.
Is there an option to just "receive" ?
It could be other settings (e.g. for the sending option) that's actually causing the problem.
Other things to try : use your whole email address including @btinternet.com, email address without @btin..., email address including @btopenworld.com (sometimes this works ...).
Check any anti-virus/security package isn't interferring with the connection.
Also make 100% sure that you've got the correct spelling of all of the items, including removing any space characters at the start or end. Sorry to say this, but it is very easy to misspell stuff, including putting the period "." in the wrong place.

  • Preview.app cannot open jpg, auto quits

    iMac 1.83GHz Core Duo
    OS X version 10.5.5
    Preview version 4.1
Preview.app is no longer able to open simple jpg files, neither through the finder (double clicking photo.jpg) or through Preview (Preview -> File -> Open -> photo.jpg). Preview opens briefly, the image is not displayed, and then Preview quits itself.
I tried two things, both unsuccessful:
    1. Disk Utilty to repair permissions.
    2. Reinstalling Preview. (Deleted Preview-relevant files in ~/Library/Preferences/. Placed new copy of Preview.app in /Applications.)

Any suggestions to get Preview.app working again?

I don't think there is a problem with your Preview.app. It sounds like you just have one bad image file.
Obviously, it would be better for Preview to provide an error message rather than crashing, but 100% robustness is a pretty difficult goal for engineers to achieve (although they actually do put a lot of work into that sort of thing).

  • Preview PDF while loading not working in Reader 10

    Hi,
a cool feature of Adobe Reader 9 was the "pdf preview while loading".
If I opened a large PDF-Document in the webbrowser the first few pages have been displayed while the rest of the document was loaded in the background.
This was very helpful because I was able to decide weather I would like continue loading or not.
This feature does not work anymore with Adobe Reader 10 and Firefox.
I have to wait until the blue progressbar is completed.
    On Internet explorer it works.
    Any tips ?
    Thank You,
    Andy.

  • Preview Problem when converting .jpg to .pdf

My scanner isn't producing sharp enough images, so I am:
    1. Saving the 300 dpi scanned file in .jpg format
    2. Opening the .jpg file in Preview.
    3. Sharpening the image.
    4. Saving the .jpg file as a .pdf file.
But Preview saves the .pdf file with huge dimensions (as though it had been scanned at 72 dpi instead of 300 dpi). So when I open the file in Acrobat, to OCR it, Acrobat thinks the file is huge (over 30" wide and over 40" tall) and the OCR chokes with a message that the page dimensions are too big. Obviously I could simply resave the sharpened .jpg file in .jpg format, and use Acrobat to convert it to PDF, which gives it the correct page dimensions. But the sharpened .pdf file looks better on screen when created by Preview. Is there any way to convert the .jpg file to .pdf within Preview which will keep the correct page size information? (Or, as a last resort, is there a Mac utility which will resize PDF dimensions?)

Hi Bruce, and a warm welcome to the forums!
You can create a Colorsync Filter to save a PDF/x-3 at your chosen resolution...

  • [Q] loaded jpg is cut off in the middle!!!!

Hi, I am having troulbe loading an external jpg image
jpg file is long rectangular shape (width 700px * height
    8000px <possiblely longer>), and around 1.2mb.
I am loading image with listener (onComplete?: I was using
someone else's tutorial, sorry for my lact of knowledge)
Everything worked..tutorial was great..and result was fine
HOWEVER, when I am loading my own image(which i specified
above), It seems like only 1/3 of jpg file is loaded.
(I wantted to make a scrollable image gallery sort of
    thing..showing long portrait images)
I was wondering is there any external file size limit in
    flash???
or height(pixel size) limit?? or any other possibly related
issue that i am not aware of???
Can someone help me out ?
Is there any way I can fix it without touching jpg images?
(last way would be cutting the all jpg images into smaller
pieces or making images size smaller :'()
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIIME ~~

yes, there's a limit of 2880 pixels in height and width for
    an image.
to remedy, import your jpg to flash and publish the swf. you
should be able to load the swf and get around the 2880 limit.
there are other work-arounds, but that one is the
    easiest.

  • Preview doesn't show JPG files

I keep having problems viewing JPG files in Preview. The image displays in the Finder, it displays in the thumbnail view for 'Downloads" and it will even appear in the sidebar for Preview if I choose to show the sidebar, but it does not appear in the Preview main window.
I tried deleting the com.apple.Preview.plist file as recommended in an old thread, but it didn't help.
    ideas?

Hi tomswie76, i found your solution absolutely working.

  • No preview when inserting some jpg's

    Hi
    I'm using DW MX 2004.
When I try and insert certain jpg images there is no preview
    displayed when
I select it. If I continue the image doesnt appear on the
    page either when I
    view it in a browser.
The path to the image is correct..
Outside of DW the jpgs I want to use are viewable in any
    other graphics
    suite.
So what is the criteria for making jpgs compatible with DW?
    Thanks for any info.
    Ian

You can use mixed case names as long as you KNOW you are
    using them!
And it's true that you should avoid names that contain any
    punctuation other
    than hyphens and underscores.

  • Preview, Textedit still loading slow in 10.7.4

Ever since installing Lion, Preview and TextEdit take up to 20 seconds to show content. The app's menu appears almost immediately, for the content to show up (even small files like 50 kb) up to you can do a lot of other things while waiting. System: 8GB memory, 500 GB standard hardfile, now Lion 10.7.4 - still the same problem. Doesn't happen always: After the first item has been show using Preview, the following files opened appear immediately. After working with other apps extensively, then going back to preview - the same problem. To note: the quickLook function in finder does not have this problem!
I have seen this problem reported many times since 10.7.2 with a number of suggested fixes: disable iCloud, reinstall System etc. All of this has been done, no change. What has not been done: reformatting the drive, reinstalling everything from scratch. Not very willing to do this, because it reminds too much of days and days spent doing just that in old Windows times.
I have also seen other users mentioning they have no such problem. In my surrounding (about 4 Macbooks running Lion), this problem can be repeated on each machine - so far haven't seen one Lion installation working without this trouble. Seems to be a performance problem accessing the file system: When saving a file under a new name, it can also take many seconds for the file dialog to show up.
This is getting more and more disturbing: There is no 'official' reaction from Apple to see anywhere, the problem has remained through 3 updates now, and repeated 20 second delays for such a simple feature are no serious bases for working with an operating system.
    thank you!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The Guest login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.
