Preview loses changes

Working on my taxes and have encountered a big flaw in Preview.
If I drag-copy a page from one saved (source) form into another Preview (target) file, do a save, everything looks fine in both files.  Neither indicates it is "edited" and needs a save.
[ Note that you have to be careful to drop the new page from the source ABOVE the hairline to add it to the target document.  Otherwise it adds it to the view but it's not added to the target document. ]
Anyway, if I then close all Preview windows and reopen the target, most of the field data that was present in the source page is gone.  Not all, but most.   This is hugely annoying!
Is this a known issue?  Any fix or workaround better than re-entering stupid tax form data?

I did a little more research and verified that losing PDF form data is a common problem and not limited to Preview or the Mac OS.  We should feel lucky for even being able to save the form with any of the entered data.
A crummy workaround in Preview is to "Export as PDF", which I think is the same as printing to a PDF.  This actions destroys the form fields that were in the original PDF (an IRS tax form in my case) but leaves the data in place.  That's crummy because making additional changes then is difficult - you have to get it right the first time.
Since Preview can save the form with the data, and can move a page - with the field data - from a form to another document, it seems goofy that it cannot do both of those things together.  Instead it loses the field data upon saving and reopening.  Not expected behavior!

  • I lose changes in the details when i open my photos from camera raw 7.0 to photoshop cs5, why?

I lose changes that I made with the tools in the "Details" section, just right after I open my photos from camera raw 7.0 to photoshop cs5, why?   The changes that I made with the tools in the "Basic" section remain.

First, how and why are you using Camera Raw 7.0 with CS5?
ACR 7.x requires CS6 to run.
Even if that's a typo in your post and you are running CS6 instead of CS5, no one should be running ACR 7.0, but ACR 8.4 —or at the very least 7.4.
Once any given camera model is supported by a version of ACR, it will continue to be supported in all subsequent versions of ACR.  Each update to ACR has unannounced, unheralded bug fixes and improvements.  Running 7.0 at this point is sheer madness.
    Please clarify.
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand, such as your platform (Mac or Win), exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop and of Bridge, machine specs, what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far, what error message(s) you receive, if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them, etc., someone may be able to help you.

  • When i open my Canon RAW-files with preview or transfer them to another program using preview they change to color despite the fact that they where all shot in B/W... How to change this?

When i open my Canon RAW-files with preview or transfer them to another program using preview they change to color despite the fact that they where all shot in B/W... How to change this?

    I shoot only RAW - no JPEG-files except those visualizing the files on my memorycard or computer. I think i have to refine my question;
    1. I know there is possible to make B/W HDR-images.
    2. I know the best HDR images are based on RAW-files.
    3. When i transfer the images in question to a HDR software they change, so when i view them in the software (either Preview or the HDR software) they are suddenly viewed (and processed) in color.
    4. This never happend on my PC so i know it has to do  with either Finder or Preview.
    5. Do i have to make all my B/W HDR-images on the PC or is it a way for me to change how Finder/Preview show/alter my images?

  • Is there a way to preview zoning changes in the CLI

In Fabric manager you can preview zoning changes before you activate a changed zoneset. This is about the only thing I use fabric manager for. Is it possible to preview changes in the CLI?

Enhanced zoning gets you part of the way there, but I disagree that there is a CLI command which truly shows the differences between the active zoneset in a VSAN and the zoneset you're attempting to activate.
This is a feature the GUI has which is almost indispensable. With enhanced zoning I can do a "show zone pending-diff vsan #" from the CLI, but that only shows me what I've changed since I had my lock (and I already had a pretty good idea what that was). What it doesn't tell me is that one of my coworkers went in and made changes to the active zoneset and committed them without activating it. My pending-diff output will show my recent changes, but when I activate that zoneset it may include changes which are not included in the pending-diff output at all.

  • Will I lose changes that I have made to song info if I start using iTunes match?

Will I lose changes that I have made to song info (like genre) if I start using iTunes match?  Also, if I make song info changes to purchased songs, will I lose those changes with iTunes match?

Some people have reported issue with metadata but I personally have had few problems with metadata changes. I have not had any data arbitrarily changed apart from a few issue with purchased tracks where initially so es changes did not stick but eventually did.

  • How to stop Preview from changing resolution when converting JPEGs into PDF

I am combining several JPEGs of identical resolution into a PDF using Preview, using either the sidebar or Automator action (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11893607). For some reason, Preview changes the resolution of the PDF so viewing it at actual size (100% zoom) is bigger and pixellated. Example: a 960x600 JPEG becomes approx 1355x845. I figured it had something to do with dpi and indeed if I do the calculation and open up each JPEG in Photoshop and resize (without resampling, i.e. without changing pixels) to 101.5, the resulting PDF is pretty close to what it should be. (Calculation = 1355/960 * 72dpi.) But the slight resize and recompression lowers quality, plus it's a huge pain to go through all of that for every image.
This issue is the same for simple saving a single image, the combining and use of Automator script has no impact.
My question, in summary: how do I get Preview to save a JPEG as a PDF without changing its resolution?

I have the same problem. I have a bunch of scanned documents (jpeg), and have been trying to make them a multi page document, instead of 20+ images.
Using the Automator "New PDF from Images" preview action v1.0, supplied by Apple with Snow Leopard, and I am able to convert the images to a PDF.
Using these images, the first page being 1032 x 1600 pixels, and telling the automator action to +size each page to fit image+, I convert them into a PDF.
    Converted PDF is viewable here.
The original JPG is clearly higher resolution than the PDF, and the PDF loses the crispness of the original scan. Even using "+size each page to fit image+" does not make the page the original image size.
What's happening here, and does anyone know a better way to convert Jpegs to PDF on the Mac - and keep the image resolution? I don't care about files sizes here, but keeping resolution and maintaining quality.

  • Ctrl-B when editing bookmarks loses change in Acrobat 9 Pro

In previous versions of Acrobat Professional, if I needed to add multiple bookmarks to the same page I would type in my text and hit Ctrl-B to start a new one. This saved whatever I had typed. With Acrobat 9 Pro, doing this loses whatever changes I had made to the current bookmark. I have to hit enter for the changes to be used. I know, it's just one additional keystroke, but one's fingers get programmed over the years.
Does anyone know if this change was done on purpose?

The reason every other page must be blank is because the files are start-up reports for climate control units, that the technician has to fill in. We print it as a book and as every other page is blank, only the right hand pages are printed. Then the technician can have the report on a hard board and easily fill in/go to the next page. I have done this exactly the same way since Acrobat 5, and I have done it this way for so long time now that I am afraid I will forget to turn it on again one I have turned it off...
The reason why I don't make the document with blank pages from the beginning is that the report must be in 2 versions; one with the empty pages for us to print when a customer buys a unit, and one without that we have on our web-site, for the customers to download. Also, I have about 1.000 of these reports so adding a lot of blank pages in FrameMaker (where I make them) is a time-consuming job. Better to add the pages after I have produced the pdf, then I don't need double FM-files (and don't need to change in 2 documents when I have to change something).

  • Beware: Preview deletes changed/unsaved file without asking

Since this happened to me twice now and I lost an hour of work, I'd like too share with you my bad experience with Preview.app
A nice feature of Preview is the ability to add annotations to any pdf-file. If you add an annotation (e.g. a comment or some text-highlighting) and the file is then "marked" as changed and unsaved (by the black dot within the red dot in the top-left conner of the corresponding window). If you now hit CMD+Backspace (for example if you want to delete a annotation which you added by accident by clicking somewhere in the pdf-file while the note-tool was still activated) the WHOLE pdf-file will be deleted (i.e. moved to the bin) and all the changes are gone (if not saved before hitting cmd+Backspace)! Sure, the pdf is in the bin and can easily be restored but all the unsafed annotations are for ever lost.
Although it might not be a bug of preview but it is a very counterintuitive behavior which can destroy (and in my case has destroyed) a significant amount of working time.

    SomeUserFromZZ9PluralZAlpha wrote:
I wouldn't say that the name "Delete" implies that the whole file is deleted, normally it just deletes the text your are working on, for example in "Mail.app" cmd+del just deletes the previous text and not the whole email
Actually, in general, it does. I just tried it in Mail and it deleted the entire highlighted email with the exception of having an active message composer window open and then, you are correct, it will only delete the previous typing.
I would assume that Preview is not presenting the "do you want to save..." window possibly because you are not adding/changing a document you created, but rather adding a note to a document that was created as or changed into a .pdf - in other words, it will not react like a word processing document because it isn't a word processing document.

  • Adobe Illustrator preview icons changed since upgrade to Snow Leopard

all of my Illustrator files preview icons have changed since upgrading to snow leopard. They use to have the Ai logo. Now they have what looks like the Postscript icon.
I believe preview icons are controlled by the OS so not sure what to do. Have done all of the usual run disk permissions etc.

Illustrator CS4 is installed on my computer and works fine. Double clicking the file will launch or open in Illustrator. It's only the preview that is wrong and a bit of a nuisance if I am looking for an illustrator file

  • Why does Preview lose notes?

I just reopened a .pdf document which I had previously edited with Preview using the "edit" tool. While all my added text and lines are still visible, all notes that I added have become unreadable. I still see the yellow "stickies" icons where I put them, but nothing seems to be able to coax the information I spent considerable time entering back to visibility. Is there a trick that I'm missing, or is this just a bug in Preview (in which case it would be better to have this function disabled to avoid wasting one's time)?

    Here is the Edge file:
    http://expresswebstudio.com/test1/assets/home-3.zip
For the text "Website Design" I created a symbol.
In that symbol it moves into place and should then stop. (But it doesn't)
Then on Rollover it changes color to red and on Rollout it changes back to white.
I've also had many problems since last update with simple stuff like looping too.
I should just be able to click a trigger and have it play at (0) or ("start") label but it doesn't always work right and I have to play with it.
Is there a correct way to use Creation Complete with triggers or something.
LIKE I SAID PREVIOUSLY, I'VE NEVER HAD ANY OF THESE PROBLEMS BEFORE.

  • Selecting photos by smart preview status, changed metadata, etc

I want to be able to select photos inside Lightroom based upon criteria which the program tracks but does not let you select on, for instance pictures without smart previews, pictures that have had their metadata changed externally, etc.  The system knows which pictures these are but doesn't let you view them as a set or act upon them as a set ( building smart previews, as far as I know requires manual selection in an updated catalog or universal operation, you can't select just those without smart previews).  Since the system keeps track of the status, it would be nice if you could select that status to view or act upon them as a set.  If anyone knows how to do this, I would appreciate it.

You need to look at Smart Collections. Both of those examples are available in the smart collection criteria.

  • Problems with Preview and changes made to images

i occasionally use Preview.app (v3.0.9) to rotate or crop image files (jpegs in this instance). if I then close the image, save changes and re-open, the image is changed. however, the icon doesn't update to the new orientation/crop and if I drag-and-drop the image into Mail.app or Photoshop.app (i'm using a very old Elements 2.0) I get the original image without the changes.
is this a fault or am I just not understanding the way it's supposed to function? surely there's a way to crop/rotate images on a Mac without 3rd party software like Photoshop?
(i'm not talking about images i want to retain in iPhoto either, i'm a business user and don't use iPhoto for work )

  • Preview app - change shortcuts

    Hi there.
I would like to assign "Find..." option on Preview (which is actually activating the search box) to another shortcut than "⌘F" (Command+F). I'm using already "⌘F" (Command+F) to open Spotlight.
For example, I already assigned "⌃F" (Ctrl+F) for "Find..." on Safari with no conflicts at all. I tried to assign "⌥F" (Alt+F) for "Find..." on Preview wondering if "⌃F" (Ctrl+F) is conflicting with the same shortcut for Safari,  with no results.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks
    G.

Well, it seems if I created the white-out box first.  Then, I create the text box second at another location on the PDF.  I can move the text on top of the white rectangle.  (I thought I had tried this before I created the original post).  So, I guess the trick is to create them in the order you wish from "back" to "front".  Still, I see no way to change the "depth" once you created the annotated objects.

  • [KDE 4.6] No preview when changing color scheme

In systemsettings > appearence > color schemes when change scheme in preview area dysplayed the same scheme, which current set. I test this bug in two machines. On one of them with new kde-profile.

I noticed it too; that is, each preview shows the last active color scheme when I change it.  I've been using 4.6 since RC1, and wanted to wait and see if others had the problem after upgrading to the final release.  A bug report was file a couple weeks ago; you can view it here.

  • Preview image changed?

When opening a photo in Preview and then dragging an edge and scaling it down there seems to be even more blank space (canvas) left around the photo as it shrinks then there was in 10.5.
Especially on the right and left sides. These photos were the same as the ones I used in 10.5 so I am comparing likes. I wonder why the canvas size can't be scaled down proportionally to meet the scaled down photo without so much extra blank space left in the photo window.

I am looking forward to an anwer concerning the HDR preview-result-difference as well... Since some posts suggest to check out the color profile of the input files, i did so: they are both sRGB. And the immense change of saturation and brightness (in other examples even worse than below)  couldn't be explained by a different profile anyway, IMHO.
    working parameters:
    Adobe Brigde CS6 (Tools/Photoshop/HDR PRO)
    Adobe Photoshop CS6
    sRGB both input and output...
