Preview no longer imports pdfs into each other.

Last year I could add pdf documents together in Preview to make a compilation that was much easier to print in booklet form as it avoided blank pages. Some time this year the behaviour changed, and now when I drag one open pdf onto the window of another, although on screen they look as if they are now one, even if I highlight each page in the sidebar when I press Print only the first one prints, which is a retrograde step IMO.
Is there a way to get the old behaviour back? This was a new feature in Snow Leopard and has been immensely useful to me, significantly increasing my productivity. It also used to be able to save the three pdfs as one file, but this too is no longer possible.
Is there a setting I can change in order to allow pdf import again? I can't even import files that last year I successfully imported to make new combined files, so I know it is not the pdf settings on the pdf file, it is definitely something that changed in preview itself in Snow Leopard in early 2012.

Yes, I have noticed the same behaviour, too. I am used to be able to drag pdfs onto eachother in the sidebar and add new pages or just re-arrange them. Now it's not possible any more. It looks like it is one document but when I save it, changes weren't applied. I guess it's a bug, but since Lion you can't tell appart bugs and features.
Additionally I get some strange popover-messages in the header bar about different versions and when I want to close the window, preview asks me multiple times whether I want to delete any documents. (If I say "no", I can't close the window. If I say "delete", the window closes but my documents are still there.)
Does anyone know whether it is possible to drag and drop two pdf's onto eachother to make one docoment of it? I just want to join two documents ino one.

  • Related emails not folding into each other in one folder / but do in all others

It really bizarre for me, as my other folders also have mail routed to them via various rules, and related messages fold neatly into each other, with a little triangle next to them, indicating that there is a whole chain in there.
But in this one particular mail folder, each message shows up one by one, I am not sure why?
The rules route messages into it by subject line (i.e. if it contains "zee" move it to that folder).
    Can anyone explain?
    Thank you!

    Hello eporon,
the only possibility to create a DVD with several movies and have the option to either play the parts separatly or "play all" as in commercial DVDs is to duplicate your movie(s).
This means you have to import the individual movies (as you already did), then create a new movie where you join the parts into one. Now import that movie as well and name the menu button "play all".
Important: this can only work if the combined parts are less than 60 min long (DVD-R is max 120 min).
Alternatively you could create a single movie out of the four parts and place chapter markers for each individual title (ceremony, reception...) the let iDVD create a chapter submenu. Now the separate titles can be accessed from there.
    hope this helps

  • CSS divs running into each other 4x3 screens but not widescreen

I am trying to develop a site:
    http://www.poweredupgamers.com.
Everything looks great on a widescreen monitor, but when I view it
on older 4x3 monitors the divs run into each other and the spacing
gets all messed up. This occurs regardless of the resolution the
    monitors are using.
I thought by setting up margins with % (5% left margin for
left div, etc.) that the divs would change in size to fill the
pages regardless of the resolution the monitor is set at. The divs
do seem to adjust for the resolution, but the monitor format
appears to be a different issue. Do I need to set fixed div
positions or widths to fix this issue? If so, how do I set them to
ensure the page is filled properly (as little blank space as
possible) regardless of the monitor's resolution?
Does it have anything to do with fixed sizes for certain
images inside divs sizes based on % margins?
Thanks very much for any help!

Resolution is not the critical issue. Browser viewport width
    is. To make
your decision you need to have some ideas about the following
    issues -
    1. What is the primary target demographic for this site?
    2. What are the browsing habits of that demographic? Do they
    normally have
their browser window maximized on the screen?
    3. If they usually have their browser maximized, what is the
    typical screen
    width?
    4. If they usually do NOT have their browser maximized, what
    is the MINIMUM
    screen width in that demographic.
    5. How do I want to build the page?
    a. Fixed width and left aligned?
    b. Fixed width and centering?
    c. Flexible to fill whatever width from left to right?
    d. Flexible (within limits) and left aligned?
    e. Flexible (within limits) and centering?
As you can see, this decision is probably much more complex
    than you
thought, and will require that you know quite a bit about
    your intended
target visitor and their browsing habits.
If you elect to go with 5a, or 5b, then your decision would
    be - 'what is
the mimimum browser width I want to support without
    horizontal scrolling?'.
Once you have determined that minimum supported width, all of
    your decisions
are made. That's how wide you want your page to be.
If you elect to go with 5c, then you just build your page
    within a flexible
container (the simplest example - although an obsolet one -
    would be to use
a 100% width table to hold the entire page). Be aware that
    pages with
limited text content can look VERY sparse and empty on wide
    viewports when
    built in this way.
If you elect to go with 5d, or 5e, then you would add this
    sophistication to
    your decision matrix -
'what is the greatest width I want to allow the page and its
    contents to
    become?'
In this case, you would use the CSS styles - 'min-width' and
    'max-width' on
the primary page container. Just so you'll know, although
    these styles are
well supported *now*, earlier versions of IE (and some other
    browsers) will
    not support them so reliably.
So - which is it? 8)

  • Chapters run into each other

The chapters in the books I listen to 'talk' into each other.
The chapters don't stop and then start Chapter 2.
The first ends while the second already playing.
Must be something in the setting, but what?
I play my book as a playlist.

Click just before the Chapter Head in the text:
Menu > Insert > Section Break
There is a rising hierarchy of breaks:
Word Break - Hyphenates a word [only off or automatic in Pages]
Tabs - Breaks up a line by adding points of alignment [left/right/centre/decimal/leading]
Line Break - Starts a new line without breaking the paragraph [shift return]
Paragraph Break - New paragraph [return]
Column Break - Forces text over to the next column or page if there is only one column
Layout Break - Changes columns/indents within a page
Page Break - Forces text over to the next page
Section Break - Divides a document up into sections of different indents/headers/footers/numbering/master layouts. This is what you think of as Chapter Breaks but it can be much more than this.

  • Problems Importing pdfs into iBook and sync to iPad air 2

Is there a solution to what appears to be a widespread problem within the community? That of not being able to import books in pdf form into iBooks and subsequently syncing with an iPad Air 2 running iOS 8.1. This seems to be specific to pdfs not 'purchased' from iTunes. In the past I have had all my software manuals available on my iPad, synced with my iMac, all working happily and would dearly love to return this situation.
I then upgraded to iOS 8. Big mistake. iTunes on the iMac (OS 10.6.8) does not sync pdfs to new iPad.
Try syncing from MacBookPro (OS 10.10) still no luck.
There are suggestions to use iTunes, but there is no longer an option to view 'Books' in iTunes.
Can anybody offer a work around until such times as the collective 'apple digit' is removed and a not so 'minor bug' is fixed?
Are Apple working on this problem or even aware of it?

Have you tried the shortcut to add books/pdfs Command Shift O?
Command Shift O is not available in iBooks (Greyed Out)
Command Shift in Finder shortcuts to Documents
Maybe I didn't explain myself very well earlier. When I am working in iBooks, having control clicked multiple files and selected 'Open With iBooks' to get the pdfs into iBooks, (as per your suggestion) a click on a pdf icon initiates nothing, a double click causes the pdf to open in Preview. This I can achieve from the Finder.
The reason I haven't tried to sync from the MBP is that I rely on iPad iBooks as a reference source. At the moment it is working but not the way I want it to (Sync via iMac 10.8.6). When Ibooks on the MBP is finally OK, then I will try.
    Thanks for hanging in there.

  • 2+ movies but the will not play into each other on DVD

I am making a wedding video. I want to break it up into intro, ceremony, reception, interviews etc. I made a seperate video for each of them in hopes that each one can be watched on DVD seperately or ALL in a row. I drag Intro, ceremony, reception, interviews into IDVD so there are 4 videos in a row. The DVD will play ONLY ONE at a time. I want the option that if they start with intro that it will just play into the other 3 videos below it...

  • Import PDF into Framemaker 7?

    Greetings
Using FrameMaker 7 in Windows XP.
I have some 11 × 17 drawings (created in AutoCad) that I receive in PDF format. They are high quality line-drawings. When I zoom in they are of high quality, the print menu shows them as 200dpi and the print quality is very good.
I need to import them into Framemaker but when I do, they come in at what is clearly NOT high quality. The notes can't be read and the like. I've tried opening them in Photoshop (low quality), I've tried doing Save As.. and choosing JPG (low quality).  I even tried saving as RTF.. same thing.
Ultimately, what I want is to bring the high quality pdf image into Framemaker, but it's not retaining the quality.
I've seen some suggestions in the forum, but none that seem to address this situation.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Solon

    Solon Aquila wrote:
The "200dpi" was something I observed at some point, possibly when I had copied/pasted into Photoshop, I'd have to look at it again. When these paste to Framemaker, or are saved as RTF, or I use the Acrobat tool for 'grabbing' images (Sorry, don't remember the name), they look AND print like 72dpi or something. I can't read the notes and callouts, so I can't use them.
    Solon,
Arnis is definitely correct, there shouldn't be any "dpi" applicable with a CAD PDF. Should be vector, although "resolution independent" is often not completely true, since many CAD apps convert curves (bezier, spline) to polylines consisting of many straight segements.
I say Auto-Cad because in the lower-right corner, with other document information, it says "Auto-Cad - No Manual Changes" and I know we have people who use Auto-Cad.. perhaps it was "UG" ... apparently another drawing program.
I can zoom and zoom and zoom.. but I didn't zoom to the end of the earth. If they're vector, they'll never lose resolution, right?
If it's vector, should I be able to open them in Illustrator? (I recall being unable to, but I've tried so many things I may not have tried Illustrator)
AutoCAD and UG (= Unigraphics) are able to create vector output. Yes, you should be able to open such a file in Illustrator.
I don't scale them to fit pages, I get them as 11 × 17 (I turned on the rulers to confirm). Though if I print one and it prints on 8.5 × 11, it's a delightfully clear drawing. Better readability than if I put the image in Frame or save as RTF then print on 11 × 17.
I'm beginning to suspect that you're right in the 'bad PDF' idea..   I was surprised that I couldn't open one in Frame.
All the things you describe sound like a well-known problem: Are you trying to print on a non-PostScript printer? These are exactly the symptoms:
    - Acrobat prints PDFs clearly, because Acrobat itself rasterizes images for output on non-PS printers.
    - FrameMaker prints 72dpi preview images, because EPS (and converted PDF) images are only correctly interpreted by a PS printer driver
    - Doing anything image related using RTF is a bad, bad idea in any case. Regarding vector graphic it's a bad, bad, bad idea
I'll be back at work tomorrow morning, I'll check a couple of things out. One person has suggested I get a copy of a program that'll translate the DWG file (I have access, if I need it) to other formats.
So, my question now is if it IS Vector, will I be able to zoom the PDF in acrobat and basicaly never lose resolution? (I always thought that once you PDF it you lose the zoom capability).
If a PDF is vector, zoom capability is preserved. Illustrator opens PDF and DWG, which gives you control over line weights and colors. Better than doing it in Acrobat. Anyway, a placed vector PDF in FrameMaker 7.x should work, but is only printed correctly when using a PS printer or the Adobe PDF printer. Same with EPS. One bug with PDFs in FM7: Black/greyscale PDFs appears on *all* four color separations.

  • Importing PDF into Indesign

Is it possible to import PDf documents into the current version of Adobe Indesign ? I am currently testing the software and was wondering if it would be possible to import around 50 of my already published PDF docs to work on it and redesign it with Indesign ?
    Thank you in advance.

Hi @plummerdesign and @MasterStudios - indeed, it is a crying shame our website does not work in IE and they are looking into this. Thank you. We do not have a demo for several reasons and can understand your point. We do have numerous forms of detailed video demsontrations on PDF to InDesign via PDF2DTP here and we have some awesome testiominals from graphic arts industry experts, Frank Romano, Michael Jahn, Joe Marin and more (click on the hyper links on their names to view what they say about PDF2DTP).
One of many customer quotes we have include this:
"Really pleased to have this product [PDF2DTP for InDesign].  The Beta version was really good and saved me loads of hassle with amends to pdfs."
    Graham Bell - http://www.absolutegraphics.co.uk
    Another quote is:
“We have a lot of PDFs from „Word“ ;-) Before PDF2DTP, we used PitStop for the corrections, now we can do it better! As a recent example, we had come in an advert in PDF for a meeting. The ad was in RGB, Fonts not included, the trim and bleed were not correct, etc. I open it with the PDF2DTP plugin and it works very nice. A little bit of touching-up work on the pictures and the colours, but not much… Thanks for the app!”
    Dirk Rosenplänter
    Blueprint Werbeagentur e.K.
Hopefully this helps you see how useful and yet still affordable PDF2DTP for InDesign is. It is truly a gem, especially when all you have left is the said PDF! Thank you for the feedback and we will strive to better that side of it, for sure.

  • Importing PDFs into Documaker

We are in the process of refiling our contracts for a new look-and-feel. The vendor is supplying us with PDFs, but they import into Documaker as embedded graphics. The problem is: we have a lot of text on them that we want to make dynamic (depending on state-specifics, etc).
Does anyone have any ideas about how to cleanly import PDFs? Or maybe someone has a conversion utility that works well (we have had great success in importing Word docs into Studio).
    Thanks in advance.
    Dave

    Hello,
There are three options for doing the same. I am just giving from our earlier experience.
    1. If you are going to use Documaker Studio 12.0, you will have an option to import PDF directly as you could do an RTF or Doc.
    2. If you are using an earlier version,
    a) You may convert the PDF to a Word Doc or RTF using one of the available utilities and import the RTF or Doc. Only from 11.5, you have an option to directly import Word document. Prior versions support only RTF import.
    b) There is an utility called "Quark" which aids in converting PDF to Sections or FAPs. However, it did not give us a 100% clean conversion; we did lot of clean up with respect to alignment, font etc after the import in order to make it appear as per our expectation.
    Thank you.

  • Making songs ALWAYS lead into each other?

I have a couple albums that have a short intro song, about 30 seconds, that leads directly into the next. As such, it's very frustrating when this intro song comes up on shuffle and it doesn't play the next song in the album.
I'm wondering: Is there any way to make songs ALWAYS lead into each, whether or not it's on shuffle, short of editing and combining the 2 songs in garageband?
    Thanks!

Turning on Crossfade will not make song #2 always follow song #1. To accomplish this these two tracks need to be ripped as a single track. Load the CD and under Advanced choose Join CD Tracks and choose only the tracks you want to always play together. You can remove the two tracks from the library or just make sure the check boxes are unchecked so they won't come up in shuffle mode so you can still play track #2 by itself if you want.
If you don't have the original CD, you will have to use iTunes to burn one with these two songs, then re-import them as one.
    Tracy.

  • Importing PDF into IFrame crashes RH8?

I'm using RH8 and producing WebHelp. I'm trying to use the new IFrame feature to display a PDF in my webhelp output, but get an Adobe Acrobat error, followed by a RH crash.
    Here's what happening:
From RH8 topic, insert IFrame and browse to a one-page PDF.
Click View Selected Item to preview topic. The PDF appears as expected (and it's way cool).
    Generate the WebHelp.
View the topic in the Webhelp using IE8. The PDF does not appear--just an empty rectangle.
Go back to RH8 and try to preview the same topic. This time the system hangs with the Adobe Acrobat error:   "Initialization of the font server module failed."
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del and shut down non-responsive Robohelp.
Repeat several times with the same results, realize I'm crazy, and post this message here.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Rick,
Thanks for instructions. I didn't realize you could do that and, in theory, that works like a charm, but I'm still having issues. Here's what I just tried:
Added a new page to the TOC and linked to the PDF in the baggage files directly. I was still unable to view the PDF in the generated output (nothing happened when I clicked the page in the TOC), but RH8 didn't crash and I didn't see the Adobe error message.
Inserted a hyperlink in the topic and linked to the PDF file. This time I got the "Initialization of the font server module failed error", followed by a dialog saying "There is a problem with Adobe Acrobat/Reader. Please exit Adobe Acrobat/Reader and try again." But there was no specific instance of Adobe Reader running, just Robohelp. After wating a couple of minutes, RH8 stopped working altogether.
Created a brand new project in RH8 (Since the other was migrated from RH7) with one topic that contained a hyperlink to a PDF. I could see the PDF in preview mode, but the project froze when I generated the WebHelp output
Since I just installed RH 8, I suspect that what I'm seeing is more of a problem with how Acrobat and Robohelp are interacting. I had Acrobat 8 Professional installed before installing Robohelp 8. Could that be it? If so, what's the best way to recover?
    Thanks!

  • Ungrouping an imported pdf into Illustrator

Is there a way to ungroup the elements of an imported pdf in Illustrator 6? Do you have to change the settings in Adobe Acrobat first to allow the elements to import individually rather than a group? Thank you.

    Angie,
You should be able to Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+G to Ungroup once it is in Illy. If there is a Clipping Mask or something blocking the way, you may release that. You can see it in the Layers palette.
    Illustrator 6
The one from 1996 or the slightly newer one called CS6/16?

  • Importing PDFs into Photoshop

    Hi,
Easy question I assume, but for some reason am stuck.
Have been creating linework in CAD and printing to PDFs. Set up a new document in photoshop, A1, 300ppi, RGB colour 8 bit. When I go to 'Place' the PDFs into the blank document, all the linework is extremely feint. I assume this has something to do with the settings?
    Many thanks in advance

If the lines are too thin for further processing then you can apply in Acrobat Pro
Advanced > Print production > Fix hairlines
Here for Acrobat Pro 8, maybe in a different location in newer versions.
Vector files can be modified by Illustrator but Fix hairlines is really simple.
