Preview not compressing tiff files?

Hi there,
Is anyone else having problems compressing tiff files with Preview? If I open a file with no compression, and export it to a file with LZW compression, I get no reduction in file size. The files have lots of white space, and typically I would expect a 90% reduction in size.

Misunderstood your question. There are some pdf files that Preview cannot handle. I suggest you send a feedback request:

COMPRESSOR will not compress DVD files adequately

This is a weird one. I'm using compressor to encode files for DVD studio pro. However, no matter what file I plug into compressor and no matter what DVD compression settings/data rates I choose, compressor will not compress the files small enough to fit on the DVD.
Any ideas?

Yeah, it should fit no problem.
Try a CBR setting at around 7mbps... it will compress much faster and it will be of higher quality than a VBR setting.

Bridge CS4 not recognizing tiff files

I downloaded an update for camera raw and installed in manually and after this I couldn't open Photoshop. I then uninstalled and reinstalled CS4 and now bridge will show thumbnails of tiff files but won't open large. All I see is a generic icon. How do I get bridge to recognize tiff files. It recognizes jpgs, and raw files. I'm using Windows Vista.

All Raw files are reconnized as all jpgs. I have my Bridge set up as a film strip with smal thumbnails and if I click on one thumbnail it opens large in preview area. I can click on a Raw thumbnail and it will display a larger view in bridge then I can open in Camera Raw for preliminary editing. I cannot do this with tiff files. I can see them as thumbnails but when I click on them bridge doesn't display a larger image (only a small icon) nor am I given the option of opening in Camera Raw. I can double click and photoshp regular will open or I can go up to file open with and go to photoshop regular but Bridge willnot allow me to view a larger than thumbnail size pic nor will it give me the option of opening in Camera Raw. My camera raw preferences are set to "open both jpgs and tiff files with settings".

I purged the cashe from one file and it affected all files(all almost 500 gigs). I'd been working on this for hours. Thank you and God Bless.

Have you reset your phone? Hold both Home and Power buttons down until Apple logo appears and phone restarts. If that doesn't help you might try a Reset All Settings reset Settings => General => Reset => Reset All Settings.
You won't lose any content or data, but you will have to reset al the settings in the settings folder.
I just emailed a TIFF file from my work laptop to my iPhone 4S running iOS 7.0.2 and it came through just fine. Able to view, save, edit, etc.

Preview not opening pdf files unless they have an pdf extension

Preview will not open pdf that does not have a pdf extension. If I give a valid pdf file a random extension like .xxx, preview opens without windows. If I give it .jpg it opens with a questionmark in a window. If I give it pdf it open without a glitch.
Why cannot Preview detect whether a file is open-able or not an not give a **** about extension. This is not windows but a unix system
The problem exist when a pdf file is downloaded by firefox and not given a .pdf extention in the downloads folder. In Safari the file is opened without problems inside Safari.

Yeah, but Preview wont open the file at all, even through the open dialog, all files not associated with preview are greyed out. Shouldn't a program open a file if told to?
Yes, I agree with you. I also could not open the files unless I changed their extensions.
Also the "file" command has no problem finding out it's a pdf. I believe its an obsolete thing specifying filetype on extension, and not on content. Is is possible to get preview to open the file depending on content and not on extention.
Like I said, I think this was a conscious choice that Apple made with OS X, but I'm not sure why the decided to go that way (maybe posting on one of the dev lists would give you the answer to that).
I haven't been able to get Preview to open files once I've changed the file extension...

Ifs902 doe not find tiff files in search

Hi gurus,
i'm have this issue too you:
I'm creating an application that search for
files in 9ifs. Some of this files are TIFF type.
search class is not able to find any kind of files
of that type.
There was a problem with the Annotator agent that
throw a exception when annotating TIFF files, but
I've changed the Annotator.jar, using now Annotator.jar
from cmsdk903.
The Exceptions were not throw anymore but search classes
can not find the document yet.
Does anyone knows anything that can help?

After cmd-f in the Finder you have to click *on the button labeled "Kind"*, don't confuse that with the button right next to Kind is... . Now a pop up menu will open from which you have to choose "Other...". Another menu appears from which you can choose "System Files".

Why can't I open CCITT G4 compression , TIFF format files with PS6? I used to open these same files with PS3. Can anyone help me out with this????

Aperture 1.1 will not import tiff file if name is the same as the raw file

Before Aperture I would open up a raw file in Photoshop, edit it and save it as a tiff or a psd file keeping the same name. When I import a folder of images saved like this the only files I see imported are the raw files and any tiff or psd file I renamed to something else. I tried looking under Images> New version from jpeg and it's grayed out with no option to see a tiff file.
I took a quick look and searched through the forum and found nothing. I can't be the only one doing this!

That's a ridiculous bug and the fact that you cannot see the entire filename (.nef, .tif, .psd) on the light table (except in tooltips) is pretty incredible too. It's like they were assuming there was no other previous workflow.
A workaround seems to be putting all the like named files in another folder before importing into Aperture. Time consuming if you have a few hundred projects and it could result in losing a few files here and there plus you need to manually add them to the proper stacks.
The concept of Aperture is still brilliant it just needs a lot more beta testing. It's kind of like Apple making Spotlight the default without giving you the option of using the clean straight forward old Find.

Print preview not opening with File Print command in CS4

I have been printing fine until recently, but now when I choose file > print in Photoshop the print preview pane does not open. The menus gray out, but that's it. If I select print from other programs (I checked Preview and Acrobat) the print dialog appears. I am working with CS4 11.0.2. on OSX version 10.6.8, printing with an Epson 2200. I tried deleting and re-adding the printer. I haven't installed anything new recently that might interfere.
Your help would be much appreciated!

Try a different printer driver to see if this has anythign to do with the .ppd used by epson 2200, try even adoeb pdf.
Reset your preferences.
Cmd-Opt-Ctrl-Shift when restarting AI on a Mac to reset to the defaults.

PREVIEW Not opening RAW files

I have a new Canon Mark III and Preview will not open the RAW files. It had no problems with the D5's RAW's. I'm using OSX 10.4.11 with latest Quicktime (7.4.1). Maybe Apple isn't up to date with the newest RAW files? ? ? or maybe I'm doing something wrong. Any ideas?

Preview not saving multiple files

I sometimes have to crop a bunch of pics.Normally I do this in preview & just click 'save all' but recently this has not been working.It starts to save the first couple but then the progress bar just accelerates while making a blipping sound & the pics are left the same as before the cropping.

Preview not opening FDF files or images

Recently the preview program has stopped working. I cannot open PDF files or image files, i.e. jpeg. The only thing I can think of that I've done recently is installing a program called "MailRaider." I just uninstalled it using a program called "Appdelete."
How best can I get the preview repaired?

Hi Joe,
if you open preview, can you use the preview menu to open pdfs?
if so, go to the finder, find one of the PDFs you can not open. then click on that PDF one time. go to the file menu, chose get info from the file menu. the inspector window that pops up will include a section on open with. expand that section and click on the open with menu and chose preview. then click the "Change All.." button.
all PDF should now open with preview.
you can repeat this process with jpegs, gifs, tifs, pngs, extra as needed.

Preview not opening PDF files

Hi. For a while now (to when I was on Lion as well as Mavericks) my Macbook Air has been unable to load PDF's in Preview. When I right click a PDF and Open With, Preview isn't even listed. When I go to Other, Preview is even greyed out in the Recommended Applications list. I can select All, and then select Preview, and Preview loads its icon on my dock, but nothing gets displayed. If I load Preview and try to load a PDF from within it, the PDF file is greyed out. I was told a while ago to install Adobe Reader to at least be able to read PDF's using another app until this is fixed. I was hoping Mavericks install was going to fix this, but it has made no difference. I have also tried repairing disk permissions to no avail. My friend has also tried putting their Preview app on a USB stick and for me to try their app, but it does exactly the same thing on my Macbook, yet it works perfectly on theirs.
Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Never mind. I uninstalled Adobe Reader, then found another app I'd downloaded a while ago was set as the default reader, which basically just scanned the file. Uninstalling that resolved the issue. Preview was then set as default and PDF's were then viewable in Quick Look and Preview.

Lightroom not reading tiff files from photoshop

It was working ok and then LR 3 stop bringing in the images that I sent to PS (CS5) to edit..it does not bring them into my collection..help!

HI Marek. Yes that is exactly what is happening. I used to be able to do it and then 2 days ago stopped working. The weird thing is that I somehow see that tiff image in lightroom when I'm in library mode in a different collection but when I make sure it's rated the same as the others to make it go to the collection I'm working on it doesn't do it. I tried importing it but it won't even bring it up as an option as it's already in LR..DO you have any experience with this?

Preview not opening the files I select.

I have been having a problem with Preview since I updated to Snow Leopard. If for instance I have a folder containing 5 pictures and I click and drag over all of them, select them individually using ⌘ and clicking or ⌘A, it seems to be having trouble opening the files, opening sometimes just one, two or three that I have selected.
Any number of files in folders or desktop, just seems to be struggling with it.
Any ideas?

Sometimes I can open certain files with Preview in the normal manner, whether dragging from the desktop or dragging from the Safari window. This is also an issue with Photoshop in CS3 (I don't have CS4...no money for the upgrade at the moment). It really stinks because it is a feature on which I relied.
