Preview not opening

Hello, today I went to view a photo from my download folder, my preview icon in the dock changed to a different picture, and now won't open. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx.

If I reload Mac OSX, using startup disc, will that effect my Boot Camp, or my windows programs?
Well, if you do an archive an install, your settings will be preserved - but that seems a little extreme just to get preview back!
Aha, a quick google found this:
You can also use Pacifist to extract apps from the .pkg files on the install disk.
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6812
Preview.app is in:
Install Mac OS X (or whatever the name of your Mac OS X Install Disk 1 name is)/System/Installation/Packages/Essentials.pkg/Applications
That seems like a much better solution then re-installing the OS!
Good luck!

  • Preview not opening pdf documents

Why would Preview not open a pdf document?
I double click on a document and Preview starts but the document does not open. I can open the document in Safari. I have other user accounts and the same document is working properly in all of them. The sharing & permissions looks like it is correct showing me to have Read & Write privileges.

Thanks, slug. I might have been born at night but it wasn't last night. I tried that and it still isn't working. When I did the repair permissions I did notice though that there were, literally, pages and pages and pages of "ACL found but not expected" lines in tons of System and hidden folders. I mean, repair permissions took almost 3 hours!! What's up with that?

  • Print preview not opening with File Print command in CS4

I have been printing fine until recently, but now when I choose file > print in Photoshop the print preview pane does not open. The menus gray out, but that's it. If I select print from other programs (I checked Preview and Acrobat) the print dialog appears. I am working with CS4 11.0.2. on OSX version 10.6.8, printing with an Epson 2200. I tried deleting and re-adding the printer. I haven't installed anything new recently that might interfere.
Your help would be much appreciated!

Try a different printer driver to see if this has anythign to do with the .ppd used by epson 2200, try even adoeb pdf.
    Reset your preferences.
Cmd-Opt-Ctrl-Shift when restarting AI on a Mac  to reset to the defaults.

  • PREVIEW Not opening RAW files

I have a new Canon Mark III and Preview will not open the RAW files. It had no problems with the D5's RAW's. I'm using OSX 10.4.11 with latest Quicktime (7.4.1). Maybe Apple isn't up to date with the newest RAW files? ? ? or maybe I'm doing something wrong. Any ideas?
    Thanks in Advance

Misunderstood your question. There are some pdf files that Preview cannot handle. I suggest you send a feedback request:

  • Preview not opening pdf files unless they have an pdf extension

Preview will not open pdf that does not have a pdf extension. If I give a valid pdf file a random extension like .xxx, preview opens without windows. If I give it .jpg it opens with a questionmark in a window. If I give it pdf it open without a glitch.
Why cannot Preview detect whether a file is open-able or not an not give a **** about extension. This is not windows but a unix system
The problem exist when a pdf file is downloaded by firefox and not given a .pdf extention in the downloads folder. In Safari the file is opened without problems inside Safari.

Yeah, but Preview wont open the file at all, even through the open dialog, all files not associated with preview are greyed out. Shouldn't a program open a file if told to?
Yes, I agree with you. I also could not open the files unless I changed their extensions.
Also the "file" command has no problem finding out it's a pdf. I believe its an obsolete thing specifying filetype on extension, and not on content. Is is possible to get preview to open the file depending on content and not on extention.
Like I said, I think this was a conscious choice that Apple made with OS X, but I'm not sure why the decided to go that way (maybe posting on one of the dev lists would give you the answer to that).
I haven't been able to get Preview to open files once I've changed the file extension...

  • After installing/uninstalling Adobe, Preview not opening PDFs

I installed Adobe Reader 8 just to be able to read one lousy document on the Internet. (It would not open past a screen that said I needed 8.0).
I noticed that it noticeably slowed the opening of ALL pdf documents from the Internet -- Preview was much faster. I deleted Adobe Reader from the Apps folder, but all pdfs are STILL NOT opening with Preview anymore and they're still all slow to open. I tried putting Preview on the doc--didn't work.
What can I do to get rid of Adobe and restore Preview as the default?
    Thanks!

Interesting! A combination of the two suggestions worked!
I did a right-click with my mouse, went into "Open with" and "Other" then choose Preview and checked "Always Open With." This worked with the pdf files only on my computer, but not for pdfs off the Internet.
Then, per the first suggestion, I deleted just that one plug-in and Internet pdfs now open with Preview as well! Just what I wanted!
Now I feel confident about deleting Adobe. Thanks you two!!!

    Hi,
I've upgraded to Mavericks and since the update i've not been able to open App Store, Ical, Preview apps. The apps will not launch from either the dock bar or applications folder.
The apps bounce once when selected then do nothing more.

  • Preview not opening FDF files or images

Recently the preview program has stopped working. I cannot open PDF files or image files, i.e. jpeg. The only thing I can think of that I've done recently is installing a program called "MailRaider." I just uninstalled it using a program called "Appdelete."
How best can I get the preview repaired?
    Thanks,
    Arturo

    Hi Joe,
if you open preview, can you use the preview menu to open pdfs?
if so, go to the finder, find one of the PDFs you can not open. then click on that PDF one time. go to the file menu, chose get info from the file menu. the inspector window that pops up will include a section on open with. expand that section and click on the open with menu and chose preview. then click the "Change All.." button.
all PDF should now open with preview.
you can repeat this process with jpegs, gifs, tifs, pngs, extra as needed.

  • Why will Preview Not open photos now?

I'm a photographer and have used Preview to open and view photos for several months now. I did so two days ago, but now when I try to open any photo it says I do not have "Permission" to open the file and directs me to Preview>File>Permission.  I'm already listed to be able to read and write images, so I do not know the problem it's having.
      Any help would be great.

    Thank you in advance.

  • Preview not opening files (might be posted in wrong don't know where it)

Hey I tried to open many different types of files in preview like .jpg, .png, .pdf, .psd and none won't open. Instead of opening through preview they open in QuickTime. Please help.

"...and none won't open". That's a double negative.
Do a Get-Info on the file/s (command-I). In the drop down menu Open with select Preview and then select Change all.

  • Preview not opening PDF's in Safari

I had a trial version of Adobe Acrobat and since it's expired and I've removed it Preview won't open PDF's that I find in Safari like it used to, instead I get a dialogue box asking to find the Acrobat plugin (I've deleted it, oops).
I have Preview as my default PDF reader (command and 'I' when a PDF is selected confirms this) but can't fathom out why it won't open PDF's direct from the net.
It's getting to be a pain saving each PDF and opening it off the desktop so any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Oops!! In my last post I used "dashboard" instead of "Dock". Sorry about that. I am new to the Mac. Here is my last post with the appropriate terminology.
"This worked for me as well. The procedure I had to do to make it finally work after I deleted the Adobe plugin from "/Library/Internet Plug-Ins" (I didn't have the file in my account folder), was to quit Safari on the "DOCK" (not just closing the browser window - for us former Windows users). Then I had to empty the trash. When I had initially moved the plug-in to the trash and had not actually quit Safari from the "DOCK", Safari was still accessing the plug-in.
Once I quite the program, emptied the trash, and restarted Safari, though, I was back in business!!!!"

  • Preview not opening new pages documents after Yosemite upgrade

Just upgraded to Yosemite and also upgraded Pages to 5.5.  Created a new Pages document and now, in Finder, the preview does not work.  If I control click on the pages file and select open with Preview I get an error "The file “XXXXX.pages” could not be opened. It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize."  Existing (previous version) Pages documents do open in Finder.  Does anyone else have this problem?

Yes this has been reported by others.
    No solution, so far.

  • HT2506 preview not opening

Now and then, my Preview application has quit unexpectedly.  Now it fails to open at all.  Any solutions?  I am on a MacBook Pro running 10.7.5.
    Thank you.

    TamaraNyc,
Seeing that it is not launching from the aplications folder (having it in the dock is just a short cut"alias")
There are few things we can try, we'll start with the simplest and go from there.
    First reset the SMC:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow directions for a battery you should not remove yourself
    Test it out
    Next try a NVRAM?PRAM reset:
    Power off, powerback on holding  OPTION + COMMAND + P + R
Continue to hold these keys till you hear the start chime 2 times, then release, reboot.
    Test it out.
    Try a safe boot:
Power off, power on holding the lesf side SHIFT key, continue holding till you see the progress BAR then release and allow to finish booting (note this will take longer than a normal boot, be patient), log in and try it, if it works log out and restart normally. (again the log process and shut down will take longer)
    post back
