Preview Not Save a Version

I have a PDF document showing in Prevuew.  I then add 9 more PDF docs onto it through drag and drop.  Document looks good with all 10 pages showing.  I press Save as Verson.  Upon reopening the resuting doculment. I only get the original one page document.  What am I doing wrong?

Here what I came up with using Preview:
COMBING PDFs IN PREVIEW - USE
To combine PDF A with PDF B:
1) Work only with thumbnails in sidebars.
2) If want file name to be PDF A, A goes into B (which will put PDF A thumbnail on top).
3) Check to see which thumbnail contains ALL pages (not just one).  Look at header on top.  (Should be PDF A.  If not, use the other page.)
4) With PDF A highlighted (box around), press Save as Version (or Command – S)
5) Result is new PDF version with old title:  PDF A.
6) Name can always be changed after completion.
7) Old version of PDF A (1 page) no longer exists.
8) PDF B can be moved to trash.

  • What is "save a version?"

I tried "help," but the answer only discused the meaning of "Duplicate," not "SAve a version."  I'm wondering where that version goes when you save it and why it doesn't give you the opportunity to name it when you save a version.  Anyone know?

Salient details described in http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/auto-save.html, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4753, and https://discussions.apple.com/message/15877452#15877452

  • My version of LR-5.7 (OS X 10.8.5) apparently does not save the .NEF (Nikon RAW) edits done in the basic module.

My version of LR-5.7 (OS X 10.8.5) apparently does not save the .NEF (Nikon RAW) edits done in the basic module. That means that I can correct exposure, highlights, shadows etc. but once I go to another picture and returned to the edited one the histogram (on the edited photo) and specifically the clipping triangles are white or some other color. This is normally suppose to indicate that some channel or all channels are clipped in the highlight/shadow areas. If I adjust any slider in the Basic panel even as little as one +/- value or press the J-key, the histogram will now show the original edit. Moving on to another photo and then returning to to previously edited one and again the edits are "not saved" and I have to hit the J-key or adjust a slider to see the previously edited information reflected in the histogram.
This is especially frustrating for fours reasons. If I have edited a shoot and return to it I cannot see from the clipping information whether the original edit was correct and of course I might re-edit it (to some now incorrect value). This brings up the second issue synchronization. I can't rely on it because if I go back to fine tune a specific image in the batch the triangles are white or some other color for that and every image. I have to hit the J-key to show/hide clipping or the back slash key to see before/after previews. This is the third issue which is very time consuming and inefficient regarding my workflow. The forth issue is that I have noticed that normally when an image is saved in PS, LR adds a copy of the saved version to its catalogue. I have noticed that the PS to LR saves are all wrong in terms of exposure (they are much lighter in tone) than the original LR edit and the PS edit on my screen. If I check the PS to LR photo in LR I notice that the Basic panel values have been changed and that I have to sync the image with the originally edited RAW/NEF LR file to get it to look the same.
Note 1). I am using an Apple cinema display and a calibrated Eizo ColorEdge monitor to view my NEF files. I have reverted back to using LR 4 however I am not sure if I should expect compatibility problems with Camera Raw 7.4 in LR 4 vs. Camera Raw 8.6 in LR 5.
Note 2.) I am going to do an import converting everything to .dng  to see if this is a work around.
Note 3). I would be interested in knowing if this issue is related to the PS RAW engine ver. 8.6, the Adobe created NEF calibrations or LR 5.
    Note 4). I have duplicated this issue in OS X 10.8.5, OS X 9.xx and OS X 10.10.1
Hopefully someone else has noticed this problem. Any shared information would be valuable. Thanks for the reply.

    Happy New Year!
The Develop panel Tone settings in your Dec 31 screenshot show both the Highlights and Shadows controls set to negative values (-48 and -19). For most images (such as this model shot) they should be set to opposite values (-Highlights and +Shadows). To try and duplicate your issue I used negative values for both of these controls with a similar high contrast image. I noticed that the Shadows control becomes non-linear when both the Highlights and Shadows controls are set to negative values. As I moved the Shadows control from a positive value the Shadows clipping indicator comes ON as expected. Moving the Shadows control to a value caused the clipping indicator to turn OFF and moving it further negative caused it to turn back ON again.
The following screenshots demonstrate the issue with only Highlights & Shadows controls applied as shown.
The Highlights & Shadows controls set just to the threshold of extinguishing the clipping indicators.
Moving the Shadows control toward negative causes the Shadow clipping indicator to come ON (as expected), but at-13 it goes OFF again!
Moving the Shadows control further negative causes the Shadows clipping indicator to come back ON at -33.
This is probably normal behavior for the PV2012 Image Adaptive Tone controls as they were not designed to be used way (- - or ++ Highlights & Shadows). The PV2012 Tone controls all interact with each other, which is why it is suggested to adjust them from the Top down starting with Exposure. For most images using -Highlights and +Shadows of near equal value produces good results.
I still can't duplicate the change in clipping indicators after selecting another image, so it may be unique to certain camera models and/or lighting conditions.
    SUGGESTION
Try one of the image files that exhibits this issue using the following PV2102 Tone control adjustment procedure:
Start with all of the Tone controls at their default 0 settings and adjust them from the top-down in the order shown below.
Set Exposure to correct midtone brightness ignoring the highlight and shadow areas for now. Setting Exposure slightly higher (+.25 to +.50 EV) than what looks correct for the midtones seems to work best with most images.
Leave Contrast at 0 for now. It’s usually better to adjust this after the first pass.
Adjust Highlights so that blown out areas are recovered and “fine tonal detail” is revealed.
Adjust Shadows to reveal fine detail in dark areas. For most normal images simply setting +Shadows = -Highlights (Example +50 and -50) works very well.
The Whites control sets the white clipping point, which you can see by holding down the ALT key as you move the slider. Adjust it to the point where you see clipping appear with the ALT key.
The Blacks control sets the black clipping point, which you can see by holding down the ALT key as you move the slider. Adjust it to the point where you see clipping appear with the ALT key.
Now go back and adjust the Contrast control to establish the best midtone contrast
If necessary “touch-up” the controls using the same top-down workflow.
If the issue persists I suggest Exporting an image to DNG file format with the settings that exhibit the issue and post it to Dropbox or other file download site.

  • "Save a Version" or "Export" in Preview doesn't work while in other Apple apps work.

I tried to resize images with Preview app.
First I duplicated the file, resized it, saved, was prompted the file name so I entered new name and then it says "The document "xx" could not be saved",
Then I tried reopen the file, resize it without duplication, save a version of it, and I got the same message.
I tried save the file in several different folders, reboot the computer and none of them worked.
Other Apple apps featuring autosave like Texteditor, Keynote work just fine.
I know there are tons of resizing app out there, but I just want my Preview app to work correctly.
My Mac is MBP bought in '10 summer, my OS is Lion.2, the latest one.
    Thank you for reading.

It sounds like a Permissions problem.
In the Finder, Go > (hold down the option key) and choose Library.
Go into the Containers folder and delete the "com.apple.Preview" folder.
In the Preferences folder, there will be some "com.apple.Preview" files. Maybe delete those too.
    See if that fixes it.

  • How to save as Word document, when Pages does not give that option, but only "Save a version"

I cannot save a document in Word or Word-compatible form. The only options I am given in File is "Save a Version," which does not provide for saving in Word. How do I do this?

Use the Export item from the File menu and select Word at the top.
    Best of luck.

  • Adobe Reader XI did not save the form data (unlike previous versions). Any way to recover file?

Adobe Reader XI did not save the form data (unlike previous versions). Any way to recover filled form with data from temp locations?
I was not aware that ctrl+s no longer works in reader and closed the PDF after savign it(with ctrl+s). However ,the data is lost and there seems to be no way to recover it.
I cannot find any temp files created by Reader on my system.
Also to my surprize(and shock), the reader did not even show a warning before closing the PDF. Does anybody know if/where can I recover the file from?
Guys, Please reply ASAP if you have got any sort of solution!

    Hi Pat,
Are you using Adobe Reader XI? And not Acrobat. It does not ask me to save the form if there are unsaved changes.
I have used previous versions of reader for saving this form data and it did allow me to save it with ctrl+s. And those versions did prompt me to save the changes before closing.
I guess I should not have updated the reader.

  • When I go to change a PDF to JPEG there is only SAVE in the preview menu, not SAVE AS ...help?

I need to change a PDF to a JPEG - when I go the normal route (Launch preview - File/Applications to PDF.file - Preview Menu ...) there is only SAVE  not SAVE AS - so I can't change it ... does anyone know why or how?
    Thanks

Oh.My.Gosh!!!  Could this have been any simpler???  I obviously looked at everything BUT that!! Thanks Linc... I get the DUH award of the day

  • How do I "save as" in preview with the new versions feature?

It is automatically saving the file to the downloads folder and I have to find it in finder in order to change this.  Is there an easier way?

Having upgrading my laptop to Lion and discovering that along with Auto Save and Versions comes the elimination of the Save As command and the inability to turn these new features off I will be reinstalling Snow Leopard and definitely not upgrading our household's other machines.
The new scheme is cumbersome in it's insistence that I duplicate the document to give it a new name.
I do not like the idea that previous drafts are accessible from inside the document by anyone who might access my machine.
I do not like that new versions are created and saved without my say-so. I do not like that I am not asked to save/discard changes upon quitting.
In short, the 248 great new features provide me little reason to upgrade but the 249th and 250th features are deal-breakers. Until they can be turned off I will not use Lion.

  • Notes app saves new version with every edit?

This is odd. In the new notes app every time I edit a note (or even while I am creating it...virtually every time I hit return) a new version of the note gets save. Typing a short note gets 15 versions in the sidebar (like the enclosed pic)
Is this how it is supposed to act? Has my syncing gone-wild?

ok, I just found a way to fix it.
For some reason Notes app did nto get along with Gmail. As soon as I went to preferences -> Mail, Contacts & Calendars and removed notes from Gmails (and added it to iCloud) everything started behaving normally.
Go figure...but sounds about right, Apple Mail and Gmail have always had a love/hate relationship, not surprised the configuration difficulty has extended to notes also...

  • HT2506 using Preview to alter, then save both versions, of a photo

I take photos in courtrooms, with judges' permission.
Sometimes they order me to "tilize," or obscure the face of a person -- the defendant, or a witness.
How can I import a photo using Preview, and use a simple tool to hide a face, and then save BOTH versions of that photo?
(Because after the case is finished, the judge will often "lift" the tilize order -- for instance, if the defendant is found guilty and sentenced.)
    Thanks for any help, Eva

Local snapshots will save version. with Time machine on.

I would just have copies of the orginal and do all your work on duplicates

It seems you lack the rights to change the file, so you may want to repair permissions.
    Do you have administrator rights?

  • Save in Version Set not working

I've been using Elements 9 for about a year, and just recently when I try to save a file after editing, and selecting Save in Version Set with Original, the file is saved to the original location, but it's not saved as a version set in the catalogue. Can anyone please help?

Yes, that's right. It still doesn't save the image as a version set. I've seen a couple of other posts from people with the same problem, and so far I've not seen a solution. I've even tried reinstalling but it made no difference.

  • Auto Save and Versions not working

Auto Save and Versions are not working in pages or numbers.  I've worked on a project for over five minutes when I "Xed" out the drop down box opened up and asked if I wanted to save.  Any ideas why?  Also, how do you open up versions?

There is the problem with that sentiment. I don't like the loss of "save as" either. I think the new save/duplicate paradigm has more steps and is poorly implemented to boot. Yet, people complain far more about Versions and Autosave than they do about "save as"? Why on earth would anyone complain about Autosave? There is no user interface change involved with Autosave. It is entirely in the background. If you don't like Autosave, you are free to randomly delete files from your machine and from Time Machine if you want. I don't see what the point of that would be, but it would give you the same effect of not having Autosave. There is more a user impact to Versions, but it still a really cool feature. Why would you not want to have access to old versions of your document? It isn't going to eat much disk space. The last time someone complained about disk space usage by versions I calculated that it would take 38 years for them to run out of space due to Versions. If you don't want to use Versions, don't click on the Versions tools. Problem solved.
I don't want people lumping clear losers (like no more "save as") with clear winners like Autosave and Versions.

  • I'm not seeing the Auto Save and Versions features

I have a document open in Pages '09 and I'm running Lion, but I am not seeing the auto save or versions features that you supposedly get my clicking on the document name. Can someone help? Do I have to turn this feature on in preferences?

I'm actually working on a Word document that Pages has converted and opened, but the document does have a title bar name. So..I have to do a manual save before auto save will start working?!?
You don't have to do a manual save. Pages will auto save the converted Word document. If you quit Pages after editing the converted document without saving, Pages will reopen the converted Word document, give it a temporary window title of "Untitiled" and have saved your edits.
I did think I see a preference setting for auto save that wasn't checked in my preferences.
I don't think Pages every had auto save. Word does though, and this may be what you're remembering.
Also, how does all this auto save and versions stuff work…
Have a read of Apple's support document titled OS X Lion: About Auto Save and Versions. This explains both and how the two features are related but different.
NB While Pages auto saves new, untitled documents it doesn't create a Version of these documents.
