Preview not scanning, image capture ok

my Canon multifunction MX 870 scans fine with image capture, but not via Preview.  Scan button is greyed out.

If you are getting the message "The selected folder is not writable" then you can  fix this by deleting a preference file.
First step is to quit Preview.
Then open Finder and select Go > Go To Folder. Then enter the following
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Preview/Data/Library/Preferences
(To make things easier you can copy and paste the line above into the Go To Folder window)
With this folder open you will see a file called "com.apple.Preview.plist". Trash this file and then open Preview again. Now you should be able to scan.

Also, there's not option to email when I am able to get as far as the "Share" menu--get Fb, message, but not Mail.
Agreed. After scanning in a document using Preview I also only get the following options.
So you would need to open Mail, create a new message and then browse to the folder where you saved the image to.

  • Why is the preview or scan images as separate files grayed out? When it was working just fine before

I have windows 8...I have been using this scanner for about a month. My scan/fax/printer is a Brother MFC-8910DW. This is what brothers website says regarding this make and model. "Scan multi-page documents using the 50-page capacity auto document
feeder or use the legal-size document glass for bound materials." For the Full month it has been scanning multiple pages using Microsoft scan a document or picture. I tried to scan this morning and it will now only let me scan ONE page at a time.(( I
have to scan over 800 pages!!) On the lower left corner there is a box I was able to click previously it says preview or scan images as separate files. It is now grayed out and I am unable to select it. I know for a fact it has nothing to do with my printer
because I use it for a month and it worked beautifully. Please could someone help with this issue?

    Hi,
For this issue, I would suggest you update to the latest printer driver, if you have any other related printer\scanner programs installed, please make sure that you have the latest version or reinstall as a test.

  • Scaner & Image Capture issues

I had an older mac running Tiger and had no issues scanning with my Epson Perfection 1260 scanner and Epson's own spftware. Now using Snow Leopard I am forced to use Image Capture and I cant get the results I want - especially scanning text.
Everything comes out washed out - text is indistinct. Everything looks covereed by a grey mask.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Mark

This is it scanned as text at 300dpi to tiff
You need to adjust settings and corrections according to your needs. This doc
    <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4505>
explains how (look under "Advanced scanning options"). There will also be additional options specific to your scanner (probably fairly similar to the choices you got with Epson's scanning software). You need to manipulate them until you get what you want.
Btw, if you plan to view on-screen or print, 300dpi is adequate. However, if you plan to run it through OCR it is not, especially not if the text is set in a classical typeface with fine serifs, as yours is; use 600dpi for OCR.

  • Preview not scanning

Today, in the middle of a session, Preview (and ImageCapture) started producing the message "Trying to open scanning session" whenever they are asked to import an image.  Never happened before.  The message and the spinning wheel run until I grow tired of looking at them and shut the program down.
I can still scan using CanoScan software, but it's clumsier than Preview was and I would like to resume its usage.
My computer is an iMac, running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, and a Canoscan LIDE 600f scanner.  I did try resetting my printers in System Preferences, but that didn't work.
    Any fixes?

Repair permissions and restart your computer.  Check w/Canon Support and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669 Printer and scanner software available for download if you have not already done so.

  • Final Cut Express, Preview not working in Capture

I've just purchased Final Cut Express, and have installed it in my G5 iMac. When I try to download film from my Sony TRV 17, I am unable to do so. The preview screen has a message "Preview Disabled", and I am unable to capture anything. The capture controls seem to control the recorder just fine. Anyone have a simple answer?

I'd tried running the camera into the computer, and only using the internal hard drive, no change.
When the camera is off and I start the program I get a message stating that the camera is not connected, but as soon as I turn the VCR on and hit the retry button, the program starts. Which easy set up option should I use if not FW basic?
Try daisy-chaining the camera to the drive. Do not
use FW basic with that camera. Make sure the camera
is turned on in VCR mode, and reboot. Launch the
application. Does it see the camera at start up? If
not, try it with the LaCie disconnected, and see if
it works directly into the computer.

  • Why does preview not scale images properly

    Hello,
Recently I tried to use Preview to print an image and it scaled it up to around 613%, wasting lots of ink.  I typed 100 into the box for the scaling factor and I got the same result.  Only after considerable searching and gnashing of teeth did I find that you have to press the Tab key after you enter the value.  This is documented in
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3043
My question is, what will it take for Apple to fix this?  Isn't this a bug?
Intuitively, if you enter the value and click Print, then it should use the values displayed in the window.  Not to do that is a bug.
    Thanks,
    Mark
p.s. This is in Snow Leopard.

Well, the question is what is a good design principle.  Yes, the programmer decided something, but was it a good decision?  You have a window where you can enter arguments to a function.  At the bottom of the window is a button that says "Execute the function."  If what you see on the screen makes sense as arguments to the function at the instant when you hit "Execute," should what you get correspond to what you see?  I would say yes.  I say this on the basis of a fair amount of programming experience, and also it seems to me to be common sense.  I think that "Execute" (i.e., Print) amounts to "confirming" the input in this context; to expect further confirmation in the form of "Tab" plus "Execute" is unintuitive.  That's my opinion, anyway.
Thanks to everyone for your feedback!
    Best, Mark

  • Live preview not showing images

    Hello,
I moved my entire site folders from my local hard drive to a NAS, but now, when I lok at the live preview, I see empty squares where images should be, and there seems to be no CSS formatting, and everything at the bottom property panel is greyed out.
I am quite new to DW (using CS6), is there anyone who has an idea what I could have done wrong?
I changed nothing in my folder structure.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks, Nancy,
I have now moved my site back to the original folder (on the same machine as DW) and the live view works normally now.
However, I find it very odd that the live view stops working when the folder is on a different machine (a NAS in my case).
Finally, is it normal that, in Live view, the properties at the bottom are greyed out?
    Thank you for your help.

  • How to By-Pass Preview in Image Capture and Scan whole document right away

Does anyone know how to by-pass the Preview mode in Image Capture? And ideally have it scan and save to desktop automatically??
What happens is I scan a document from the printer. It performs a preview. The rectangles it chooses are often wrong, I have to delete them, then do a select box around the whole document, then click Scan.
What I would like is for it to just scan the whole document from first button press, not have to go through this process which includes a double scanning.
    Thanks!

If you hide the details pane Image Capture will scan immediately to a specified folder. Other way is to open printers and faxing from the system preferences , select the scanning tab of your printer and click Open scanner. It will start scanning immediately without opening Image Capture. To set other software as default you should open Image Capture, select your printer/scanner and click the scanner buttons. It will then let you chose which program should be launched when you scan a document.

  • How can I turn off the preview (overview) automatically executed when I launch Image Capture?

I love using Image Capture, but every time I launch it, it automatically does a previes of my scanner's flatbed.  Most of the time, I don't use the flatbed.  I use the feeder to scan multiple pages.
My question is this:  Is there any way to turn off the automatic preview (overview) that Image Capture executes when it's launched?
Thanks in advance for any and all assistance!

    Not a direct answer.
    From Image Capture Help:
Scan pages with a document-feeding scanner
When you scan a document with a document-feeding scanner, the same settings are used for all the pages in the feeder. If your pages need different settings (for example, some are grayscale and some are color), separate them into different groups.
Before you begin these steps, you need to open your scanner. For instructions, see one of these help topics:
    Scan an image
Scan an image with Image Capture
    Scan an image with Preview
Place the pages in the scanner’s document feeder.
Turn on the Use Document Feeder option, if it’s present.
Set scanning options. You may need to click Show Details to see all the available options. Here are some of the options you can set. The options available to you depend on the scanner you’re using. Some options aren’t available on all scanners, and some scanners may have more options.
To choose the type of image being scanned, use the Kind pop-up menu.Choose Text for black-and-white images with high contrast, such as text. Choose Black & White for grayscale images. Choose Color for color images.
To scan both sides of a page, select Duplex.
To choose a size for the scanned image, use the Size pop-up menu.
To choose where to save the scanned images, use the Scan To pop-up menu.If you choose a folder, the images are stored in that folder. If you choose an app, the images are opened with that app.
To adjust the colors or exposure of the scanned image, choose Manual from the Image Correction pop-up menu, and adjust the controls. If you don’t see the image correction controls, scroll down or make the Scanner window taller.
Click Scan. The scanner scans the pages one by one.

  • Image Capture App Not recognizing Iphone

Using a MBP with 10.5 with most recent updates. Running iphone 1.14
Iphoto does not import my pictures from my iphone. This is because image capture doesn't recognize it.
I have read many posts about this and will let you know what I have tried so far.
    - Disabled auto syncing in itunes and image capture
    - deleted the plist for iphoto, image capture, and preview.
    - reinstalled image capture from original leopard cd using pacifist.
    - reset and rebooted both devices many times.
I have an alternate install of OS X Leopard on an external USB drive which works well with my iphone and image capture, shows up right away.
Anyone have any ideas what the problem could be. I have given up, tried everything I could think of, but I know the problem lies with image capture not recognizing the iphone.

Already tried a connection without a hub, on both usb ports on the macbook.
As for secondary software that might interfere, none installed to my knowledge.
Well it looks like the mac quote of "it just works" doesnt work in my situation, I dont feel like booting to my second hard drive just to sync the photos. So I guess I will have to wait until my new macbook for a fresh install because I dont want to erase everything currently on my book.
might try and install and archive next time I have some serious software issues and hopefully that will solve my problems.

  • Image Capture app not working since migrating to Lion.

Image Capture app isn't working so well since migrating to 10.7 Lion. Now when I try to scan, Image Capture hangs with a "Crop and Rotate" message. It doesn't import into iPhoto. Anyone else run into this type of problem?

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Image Capture no longer working with Samsung SCX-4500W

Out of the blue, Image Capture is no longer working with my scanner (Samsung SCX-4500W). Until today, I have had no problems, but now Image Capture will only complete the "overview" but not the "scan" itself. I get the message that the "scanner reported an error." I have tried restarting, unplugging cables, etc. but nothing works. I don't think there is a problem with the scanner itself -- it is able to scan using the built-in "scan to PC" function, but not Image Capture. I am using OS X 10.6.1. Any suggestions?

Try running a repair disk permissions. This is done via the Disk Utility application. Reply if you need help to do this.
Also, do you have another application you can scan with? Note that Preview will use Image Capture, so you need some other application. As a test, you could download Picasa from Google which works well with TWAIN scanners.

  • Image Capture won't capture (Canon 9950F)

I have recently bought a Canon 9950F for a specific project. It replaced an Epson Perfection 2450 Photo which worked perfectly but was limited in the size (area) of its film scanning capabilities. I have used a range of software including VueScan and Silverfast v6.6 but the most direct scanning tool I have used is Image Capture. The feature that I really like with Image Capture is the ability to select multiple scan areas in the 'preview' and have Image Capture scan them as a batch. The project I am working on (family archive photos, documents and film negs of various formats) really makes the most of this feature.
I have moved over to the Canon 9950F and immediately noticed that Image Capture does not see the film scanning feature of the 9950F. It scans documents exactly as the Epson 2450 did but does not offer the option of scanning film or transparency, only documents on the flatbed. I have updated the Canon Drivers and the scanner is visible under System Prefs > Printers. VueScan and SilverFast recognise the scanner (but neither have the selectable scanning feature that Image Capture offers) and Photoshop Elements 10 also sees the scanner under File > Import.
Has anyone experienced this problem and, if so, is there a 'work around'.
    Many thanks.
    iMac 24", Intel Core 2 Duo, 3Gb RAM, OS10.6.8,

Thanks PAHU that were a lot of drivers for sure in your link and I installed those. Unfortunately, nor the driver package nor the ICA driver did solve my problem. I'm beginning to think it might just be a bug within Image Capture, although Image Capture is stating the scanner is reporting an error. Strange thing is that Image Capture will work fine as long as I hide the details pane.
It seems to be an isolated problem too as I can't find any other subject on this on the net. I see more people having trouble to scan images with Image Capture but that's mostly related to not selecting the right part of the preview. I will see if I can reinstall Image Capture from the OSX dvd.

  • HP3310 Photosmart All-in-one not scanning

I am using OS X 10.9.5 on my Apple Macbook Pro.  Whilst I can print from my laptop, I cannot scan as I used to be able to.
First of all I googled and followed the links to the HP website where I have found lots of articles - support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04510394.  Here it seemed to suggest that I had to delete the printer and then readd it.  So I went to the Apple/System Preferences/Printers and scanners, added my printer with the ip address, chose the IPP portico and chose the HOP Photsmart 3300 series.  I then get the message  "Unable to verity the printer on your network -  Unable to connect to ‘192.168.1.73’ due to an error. Would you still like to create the printer?"
So I did but then I was only presented with a "Printer and Scanners" window like in step 2 without the scanners tab this time.
I am told that Apple includes the print drivers in its software updates so I cannot download the latest drivers.
I have checked the articles on this site.
Can I no longer use any function of my HP3310 except the print function?
Or can anyone recommend something that I can do to be able to use the scanner again?
Many thanks in advance for your help.

    Thanks for trying to help.
I have tried using Preview and also Image capture applications but neither can see the device,  The Printer is connected to my wireless network.

  • Preview and image capture don't save imported scanned image

Hi. Both preview and image capture aquire the scanner and displays the image overview. But when proceeding
to scan, the application simply hangs and no image is saved.
Maybe some prefs file is corrupted. Tried removing the com.apple.Preview from ~/Library/Containers, but didn't help....
    What to do???

Not sure if this is relevant:
    1) TWAIN-BRIDGE is installed otherwise mavericks won't talk to the scanner.
    2) recently added an HP printer (no scanner). Shouldn't conflict with the scanner driver, but then again.....
