Preview on an external monitor

Hi AE community !
I'm facing an issue with AE CC and my new MB Retina.
I have an external Cinema Display plug with Thunderbolt, but this one don't appear in the external monitors list in the settings menu.
I have only access to Firewire output.
Do anybody know a trick to fix it ?
Thanks

I don't believe there is, unfortunately. However, you can set up a workspace with two windows and drag the second one to your second monitor (that's what I do)
hope this helps.

i have purchased my Mini display port to VGA adaptor and connected it to a convertor box outputting to video wire (Yellow one forgot its name) the mac recognises it and i can view my mac desktop on it but all i want is to be able to press play on the canvas and have it play in broadcast quality in full screen on my TV but it wont happen despite various other tutorials telling me how to do so. i used to be able to do this with ease on my old PC even with movie maker, any suggestions on how this can be done? ill be very grateful, Joel

"... play in broadcast quality in full screen on my TV ..."
You cannot accomplish this via the miniDisplay port and VGA. In this mode, you will see your full computer desktop on the TV (not just the FCE Canvas) and it will not be very good resolution.
You need an analog-digital converter connected via FireWire to your Mac. Most miniDV camcorders can serve as the converter. (Mac->FW->camcorder->analog a/v out->TV). Otherwise, you will need a converter like the Canopus ADVC-110.

  • Ntsc preview on external monitor

    hey guys,
I have an ntsc job to edit and am doing a test so i am ready for when i sit down with the client. I cannot get a preview on my external monitor. Normally I pipe it to a dsr 11 deck when using pal no prob. Tried that with all settings to ntsc land ( flicked the ntsc switch on back of deck ) no love. I get an image but it wont play motion, when i hit the space bar it updates the image from where i was to where i stop but no motion, it gives me a display as if it is set on current from not all frames. I connected the firewire to my Z1 and get the same thing. Using FCP 5.1.4
I used an easy set up in ntsc dv anamorphic.
    Any suggestions ??

my TV and camera will display both ntsc and pal. Just went back to my powerbook and it did what i wanted no prob. Must be an imac thing, will try trashing prefs and see what happens, but will do job on weekend on PB. Getting late here in Sydney, will sort it out later... Thanks anyways...

  • Macbook pro does not support Final Cut Pro preview on external monitor?

I have been editing on Final Cut Pro from my imac for approx 1 year with an external monitor attached with no problems. I recently bought a macbook pro, for Final Cut Pro editing, and discovered that the monitor does not work. The Final Cut Pro preview on the external monitor freezes and in the preview pane of FCP it flick between two images.
I have been reading around some forums, and have seen a couple of people with the same problem.
Anyone have a suggestion on how to run the external monitor with FCP?
    Thanks!

You have probably already done it but ensure you have updated the OS and Quicktime prior to attempting to instal Final Cut Studio.
I recently had a hard drive crash and after installing the new hard drive it would not read the OS installation disc. I ended up using an external drive case and installed the OS on the drive from a different Mac Book, then reinstalled the hard drive in the other Mac Book. Then it booted right up. I updated all the original software before attempting to install any additional software.
Everyone kept saying it wouldn't install due a possibly defective optical drive and I can't say why but it wasn't the drive. As soon as I had the system up and running again the optical drive functioned flawlessly.
    I hope this helps you.

  • Preview on a Video Monitor?

Does Encore have the ability to feed the preview monitor or timeline into an external NTSC video monitor (not unlike a non-linear editing system would)? I have a Sony LMD-2010 LCD monitor that I use with my Avid system (output through Avid Mojo) and am wondering if the same can be done in Encore.
    Thanks,
    Martin

I am unable to preview on an external monitor in the trial version, although I could with 1.5. I'm firewire out to a Sony DSR-11 which does give preview in Premiere Pro 2 and After Effects 7.
In Edit>preferences>audio/video out, it is recognising the Sony, but reports "unknown" as status.
Can anyone please tell me what I'm missing. Thanks

  • How do I get Preview Slideshow to appear in external monitor/projector

In Preview in Snow Leopard, I could set up a slideshow and use it for presentations through an external monitor or on a screen using a projector. I did this by dragging the Preview window onto the external monitor and then clicking on View/Slideshow. A kind of poor man's PowerPoint presentation, but very quick to set up. Now, unless the displays are mirrored, as soon as I click on View/Slideshow, the slideshow is "sucked" back onto the screen on my MacBook, leaving the external screen blank.
I have found that there are alternatives to Preview available, like Xee, but with the Preview slideshow feature, only the pictures appear on the screen, with all the background being black, which looks more "professional".
Does anyone know if there's anything I can do to stop the Preview slideshow ending up back on the MacBook?
    David

There is something terribly wrong with Lion's support for two monitors, compared to previous Mac OSes, and it looks like you have found another instance of that fact. Oddly enough it seems like QuickLook may work where Preview doesn't. Anyway, I have two monitors and if I move a folder full of images to the secondary monitor, then select the images and right click and then click QuickLook in the Contextual Menu, then click the full screen arrows and the play button, the slideshow will play on the second monitor. If I open the pix in Preview, move the Preview window to the second monitor, and select "Play Slideshow" it promptly moves everything to the main screen, ditto for clicking the full screen arrows within Preview--moves to main monitor and in effect turns off secondary monitor. So give QuickLook a try and see if that will work for your purposes.

  • No preview on external monitor and histograms black?

Hi, im having a problem with previewing. In the upper left room i see the footage (also changing when grading) but the rest of the rooms and my preview monitor are black. Histograms are not working.
Rendering and sending it to final cut works.
Im using a blackmagic decklink card for the output of the external monitor. Footage comes from the RED, 2K.
A colleague has the same mac pro but is using the older cinema screens. He has no problems. I use the new 24". Could that be the problem?
Does anyone has a idea what is going wrong?
    Thanks.

  • External monitor preview

I have heard that you need firewire to preview on a another monitor (after effects). where do i plug the wires? usb part in the computer and the firewire part in the monitor?
    <moved by mod from downloading,installing,setting up - kglad>

Firewire preview is for Standard Definition through a firewire video device like a firewire DV tape deck. It's old school and does not work with HD video.
You can use a bunch of 3rd party capture solutions to preview through external monitors, or if your graphics card supports multiple displays just go that route.

  • External monitor preview not working in CS5

Well its taken almost a month to get my Production premium suite CS5 working (exit code 7 install error) I finally reinstalled win7 pro after dicking with adobe tech support for weeks (they did try to be helpful and polite) and that "cured" the install problem so now I see that the external monitor preview still dosent work as in CS4....anyone know what gives? mine dosent work even if I set to external audio either. After effects-encore and Photoshop external firewire previews all work fine so I know its a bug in Premiere...anyone logged this yet?.On a VERY positive note I absolutely love the "solidity" of Premiere ....I invested in a Quadro fx3800 and well its a beautiful thing really.....is it odd to be in love with hardware and software
    cheers y'all
    steve

this is a well known limitation of the current CUDA drivers. Adobe is hard at work with Nvidia to solve this, but the work around is to set MPE to software in your project settings. It has high priority AFAIK.
Wow thanks Harm that was the workaround for now ....brilliant

  • Can anybody help me ? preview (external monitor)

    Hey Guys:
I need to preview in real time my HD 1080i work in an external monitor I am not sure with card should I purchase. I have a Viewsonic 1920x1080.
I know that the most used card are balckmagic and AJA Kona models but I have read some complaints about both.
Firstly I was after Intensity Pro (blackmagic) but it seems that it does not work well with HD output.
Then I searched info about DeckLink (Blackmagic). It seems it works ok but not more reference than oficial web.
Finally somebody told me that AJA Kona cards work really well but I don't know which model will be the proper for monitoring my work in realtime.
Can anybody help me with this ?
    Thanks
    Andres

    Hi Andrew07,
With my Mac Pro 8 core, AJA KONA LHe SDI card using Final Cut and a fibre channel disk array I can capture and play back 1080 HD footage, no problem. (I have also used Blackmagic cards as well)
With After Effects if I have my External Monitor set to 1080 and I try and RAM preview a 1080 composition I can only achieve a frame rate of about 15 fps. If my external monitor is set to normal SD and the composition at half res I can then preview in real time. But that is not Full res HD.
If I render the RAM preview to disk I can then play that in Final cut in realtime at full res
So you have to work around AE as it just can't pump out that much data quickly enough, but I do HD graphics everyday using AE and it does work just not quite as well as I would like ...
    Hope this helps

  • Just upgraded to 5.1 from 4.5 and no external monitor preview!!!

I just called apple and they said this issue is not covered in their 60 days tek support! Thanks Apple!
Anyway... I have been using FCP 4.5 for a year or so with no issues, I just upgraded and now for the life of me I cannot see my external monitor preview. I have tried refreshing the AV devices, restarting and messing with all the settings that used to fix this issue, but nothing. Nothing else has changed. Just 5.1 upgrade. I use the DVX 100 a video camera to go out to my monitor. Help?
    Thanks

For some reason, upgrades have a habit of kicking QT off center and it needs a reinstallation to work properly.
Try this to do a full quicktime reinstall.
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Reboot
    Good luck.

  • Surface Pro 3 Display/Video/Graphics Driver Issues - DisplayPort, External Monitors, Windows 10 Build 9926

Surface Pro 3 - i5 with Intel HD Graphics 4400
    Windows 10 build 9926
    All Latest updates installed
    Intel Graphics Driver 10.18.15.4079.
Latest system update released on Jan 22nd (which I understand is just the latest intel graphics driver?).
The display driver status has this error message: Windows has stopped this device because it
    has reported problems. (Code 43)  - I assume it's
reverting to the basic Microsoft driver when this occurs. Which explains why my displayport (External monitors) will not work.
I have uninstalled the driver completely (and deleted the driver files), tried the Windows basic driver,
and rebooted several times with no luck.
I cannot get my docking station displayport or the  displayporton my surface pro 3 working.
According to Microsoft (see below), this is a known issue UNTIL you update to display driver
    version 4079  - which I have.
Known issues on Surface after updating to Windows 10 January Technical Preview
On Surface Pro 2 and Surface Pro 3, the Mini DisplayPort won’t work on the Windows 10 January Technical Preview until you’ve installed graphics driver 4079 or later. Check Windows Update often for the most recent graphics driver.
On Surface Pro 2 and Surface Pro 3, you’ll notice poor graphics rendering on the Windows 10 January Technical Preview until you’ve installed graphics driver 4079 or newer from Windows Update. Check Windows Update often for the most recent graphics driver.
If you’re using video driver 3496, you may need to start in safe mode and remove that driver. Then restart Surface in normal mode and go to Windows Update to get the most recent graphics driver.

    Hi Nicholas,
Similar issue has been asked here:
Surface Pro 3 restarting after a series of blank screens!
For error code 43, here is a reference:
Code 43: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems
For the current situation, please try to wait for the driver update, as display driver version 4079 didn't work well at your side, please submit this through Windows Feedback Tool.

  • External Monitoring - HD Footage, NTSC Monitor

My husband and I are having a issue and have pulled out our hair trying to figure it out.
Using voltaicHD we got the AVCHD footage into Final Cut Express 4 (on G5)...
We've got it in the appropriate timeline for editing.
However, we aren't getting a signal out to our external monitors...
Setup is this... We go via FireWire to a JVC miniDV/DVD deck (sr-dvm700), which is then connected to a samsung LCD tv via component cables (hdd/DVD) and s-video (miniDV)... BNC cable goes from deck to broadcast safe monitor (JVC tm-h150). This all works fine with sequence set for DV-NTSC (720x480).
however, with sequence set for HD... If we go through Easy Setup on Final Cut Express and select DV-NTSC we are not getting any signal... This is with the sequence set to Apple Intermediate Codec 720/30.
In the Easy Setup drop down, if we select HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 720/30 we still get no output. When we select it, it tells us to set device control to HDV-NTSC but we cannot figure out where to change that.
What are we missing? How do we get this to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well after researching and researching, I set up the computer with the HDTV as a 2nd monitor. Using the Cinema Preview (Fullscreen) function, I can see the video we're editing on the fullscreen Samsung HDTV.
    DVI-to-HDMI adaptor was the solution.
I realize this may not be the best solution for color correction, but it IS a solution for now... and one that is affordable. Where I finally got the tip that got me off in the right direction was from a guy on YouTube...
    Frank's Tech Help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMNLOVn8hes
It wasn't the exact solution for me - but got me started in the right direction.
The G5 I have has the GEForce 5200 Ultra card, which has a DVI and ADC connector.
I used a DVI-to-HDMI adaptor to go to the HDTV.
I used and ADC-to-DVI adaptor to connect to my LCD monitor (what was originally hooked up to the computer).
Then in the settings for Displays, I set the resolution and arrangement of the monitors. By dragging the menu bar from the TV Display to the Monitor (in the arrangement dialog) it set the LCD Display as monitor #1.
Now, in Final Cut Express, all I need to do is go to View... Video Out... Cinema Preview (Fullscreen) and in addition to my timeline playing on the canvas, it plays in full screen HD on the Samsung HDTV.
While no one here gave me the answer, maybe my reply will give the answer to someone else who isn't ready to spend the money on Final Cut Pro (since this isn't the FCP Forum) and an expensive IO Card.

  • Second iMac as external monitor; Connection via firewire without a deck/cam

Second iMac as an external monitor; Connection by firewire without a deck/camera possible?
I spend a lot of hours to find an answer to the following question, unfortunately without any success:
I’m working with a new iMac (Intel, OS 10.4.11) and Final Cut. Additionally I have an old iMac (G3, OS 10.3.9).
I would like to use the FireWire port to transport a dv video stream from the new iMac/Final Cut to the old one so that the old one can be used as a monitor. So all I want is a software for the old iMac that shows an incoming FireWire dv-stream as a live picture.
I tried vlc, videoviewer, iMovie, Vidi and btv. The problem is always the same: Final Cut (on the new iMac) does not find any FireWire/dv-device nor do all these software on the old iMac find a connection to Final Cut. I think the problem is that both sides are seeking for a device-setup at the FireWire-port on the other side. And none of them sends a signal like „yes I’m here and waiting for a dv-stream“.
Another attempt was ScreenRecycler with VNC-client on the old iMac. Unfortunately on my old iMac Os 10.3.9 is the last possible OS and no vnc client on that system is fast enough to show a video in real time.
I also tried virtualDV from Apples FireWire SDK 20. It works so far, that it claims to be a dv-device (on the old iMac) and so Final Cut at the new iMac says: „okay I’ll deliver you that stream“. The problem now is that virtualDV only can record that stream, not show it in real time.
Is there any solution like virtualDV that shows a live preview and turns the iMac in a FireWire dv-device?
Is there any solution that Final Cut simulates to be a FireWire dv-device itself and that another computer finds that device and understand the dv-stream?
Thank you very much for your help.

    Don't think this is possible.
You're better off using a DAC (for example the one made by Canopus) and put your DV in and get a compatible signal out the other end for connection to your monitor.
I don't understand why you would want to go through a computer first, it would be a waste of time and add a huge delay to the signal.
Finally, I wouldn't use a computer monitor as an external display, it would be useless in my experience. Why not just preview on the one you've got by going full screen in FCP? Also using a computer monitor as a preview/output monitor is not a good idea since it's so different from a normal TV and won't show the correct colour space or issues such as flickering and interlace problems, underscan etc etc.
Seems like you're using a sledgehammer to crack a very small nut and that would be to use a DV camera via firewire and then connect up a monitor from that. (again using a convertor box if you have a connection problem.)

  • On external monitor: GOOD.    after render & dvd: BAAAAD.   help, please!

Hi, I edited a 60i NTSC video from a canon XL2, and it looks fine on the external monitor (TV), the FCP preview and everything. It even looks good when I export a QT mov with no compression.
But as soon as I burn it on iDVD and play it on a DVD player, the whole interlacing business goes terribly, terribly wrong.
I've tried all possible exporting settings, but it doesn't work. Should I de-interlace the clips? I've gathered from reading the forums that it might help, but it sounds like a desperate solution, since the text should be interlaced but not the video?
I mean... what did I do wrong? Isn't ot supposed to just work straight-through with the NTSC DV Easy Setup and changing only to "None" on the compressing settings at export?
    Any help, please? Anybody?

    oh, OK.
For exporting, I used the Export>Quicktime movie, just like you said, using the current setting (i.e. Compression:None)
The DVD player was connected to a PAL TV, but it's OK because the DVD player can read anything. I know because I've watched NTSC as well as PAL dvd movies before.
The Canon XL2 the Mac is connected to, via Firewire, is NTSC, connected via RCA to the PAL TV. Which means the signal I'm watching is Black & White... (I know this sounds WEIRD)... but it's O.K. because what I'm really checking as I edit is the interlacing problem that I got when playing the DVD on the dvd player.... : the BAD problem.
How bad? Really bad. Any sudden movement, or panning of objects with vertical lines, like a painting or a building looks all wobbly and curvey and blurry and wrong, which is unnacceptable for the project I'm doing, as it is a professional work (Meaning that I'm charging money for it, despite the crazy assemble of different products and formats I'm using).
I've gotten things that look good before, but never on Final Cut Pro.. I'm new to the program, and to Mac, and this is the first video I'm exporting to a DVD on this platform.
