Preview opens but toolbar is unresponsive

Have an issue with preview.  I am able to open images with preview but the toolbar is completely unresponsive, i have no control of the functions such as zoom.  I am even unable to close using the red button, I have to either force quit or for some reason right click and quit at the lower icon.  The main tool bar at the top of the screen also will not respond when preview is selected, unless I use right click (very wierd). Is there anyone else out there having this problem.
Using Lion and have tried repairing disk permissions to no avail.

Justin, I seem to be going down the same path:
I am experiencing this strange strange phenomenon with the Preview application and Mac OS X Lion on my MacBook Pro 13":  When I launch a file within Preview, it opens normally and I can scroll, zoom and view its contents. However, everything I need a left mouse click for, I can not access.  Right clicking within a window works, i.e. I  get the context menu.  The left click problem is also present for resizing the window or clicking on the upper right icon for full screen mode. Everything is visible, nothing is "clickable".
Outside of the preview app, everything works normally, so I do not have an issue with the trackpad/mouse
So far, I tried the following:
- I replaced the preview app from another Lion installation
- I confirmed that the same behavior happens with an external mouse
- I deleted all the property files related to Preview (com.apple.Preview*) in my Library/Preferences folder.
- I repaired permissions
All this had no effect.
With a different user account on the same machine, everything is in order. So this must be caused by some configuration problem within my user context.
I have run out of ideas… any tips are welcome.

Thanks for your lengthy reminder dude, I have a similar Mac with yours. I suspect its a software fault because it happens after I upgraded to Lion, 10.7.2.

  • Preview launch but doesn't display anything

Well, everything was running (nearly), but since this morning when I want to view an image or a pdf, preview opens but does not show me the pdf or picture.
Iv' tried opening preview and than do file-open file, but I just got the same result.
    any clues.
PS: the "nearly" is about an unresolved issue where very frequenly the macbook pro want shut down properly. It looks like it off, but it's not and it won't "wake". The only way I've found to get out of this "nearly off" state is to manually shut it down by pressing the power button for a few sec. Than it boot, but display a message saying that mac os didn't close properly...

Log back into your problem account:
Here's the whole litany for thoroughly checking your home folder. It's not as daunting as it looks.
    1. Navigate to ~(YourHome/Library/Fonts - drag this folder to the desktop.
    • Restart and test your applications.
    • If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
( Likely suspects are Times RO, Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.) If not, replace your Fonts folder.
    2. Check Preferences Thoroughly;
    • Navigate to ~(YourHome/Library/Preferences drag this folder to the desktop.
    • Restart and test your applications.
    • If this works, save the old preferences folder somewhere else or on disk, name it "old prefs" .
** Note: A very important file is the "com.apple.Mail.plist" preference file located in the Preferences folder which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences (hold this one and replace if your problem is not with Mail).
You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them. (Or if you have the time and inclination, "cherry pick" through until you find the problem one or two.)
    3. Check Permissions Inside Home Folder
    • Navigate to YourHome/Library.
    • Get Info (Command - i) on folders for apps you are having problems with.
    • Open the "Ownership & permissions" disclosure triangle.
    • Make sure you are the owner, with "read and write" access.
    • Click on "apply to all"
    • If this is correct, open the "Applications Support" folder and do the same procedure (Command+I) for the folders with the names of the applications you are having trouble with.
(Note:The reason to check this is because repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't touch permissions inside your home folder.)
    4. Navigate to YourHome/Library/Caches and drag this folder to the trash, then log out and back or restart. There is no need to replace this folder.

  • Preview app opens but is unresponsive

I have a problem,  I am able to open images and view them with the preview app,  but the app itself is unresponsive. It will not let me utilize the apps tool bar such as the zoom command or even the exit button.  Have tried disk repair multiple time and nothing works, anyone else have this issue, or any sugesstions.

Thank you for the response.  I am unsure how to transfer everything, and even if I did, I fear that the problem would simply be switched to another user.

  • Firefox opens but completely unresponsive even after reinstall

I'd been having problems with Firefox hanging. It didn't appear to have anything to do with any of my addones, as I continued having problems even after disabling them--first one at a time, then all of them. Now after updating to the new version, (thinking that might be the problem) it will open but then immediately hangs (I am unable to even try any of the "fixes"): Error mesasge in toolbar "Firefox is not respponding". I tried completlyuninstalling and reinstalling and that didn't work either. Now the first time I uninstalled and reinstalled I was given the option of deleting my presonal preferences as well, essentially reinstalling a factory fresh Firefox browser. I said no,. Well when the reinsiall didn't work, I tried uninstalling again but this time the option didn't even come up. I have also tried a systm restore without effect. In addition I have run a complete virus scan with AVG and I'm coming up clean. There are several odd things about this glitch: At some point an addon that synchonized my FF favorites with my other browsers erased the back ups on the other browsers (it isn't supposed to do that if shut off as far as I know or I would have chosen a different method). I can't locate my FF favorites in order to save the file (I really want to keep them). The favorites bar is still on the toolbar, so they do seem to be intact on FF, of course I can't access anything. I am completely flummoxed given that even uninstalling and reinstalling hasn't worked. I am not getting any other error messages other than that the browser is not responding. I am currently using Windows 7 on a gateway netbook. The only thing that might possibly have anything to do with this is that at some point some program changed my home page and search engine to Delta. I suspect it was Vuze, but I had selected no and aborted the installation. I still had to manually change them back to my personal defaults. Obviously that shouldn't have affected my browser in this way. The only two other programs I've installed within this time period were from Giveaway of the day and Games giveaway of the Day both reputable websites. None of the feedback from these two programs indicated anything about hijacked home/search engines from other users--who would most definitely be kicking up a fuss. So I have two basic issues: Fixing FF and saving my favorites from FF. Tried again, making sure that the AVG was off, and while it didn't hang the first second, it started hanging as soon as I opened a web page or the add on page. Also note that I cannot install the troubleshooter. I saved the program but it won't install or even apparently recognize that I have FF installed.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

  • In PSE 13, when I open a folder, jpeg files have a preview image, but PSD, DNG and CR2 files don't. Also, no thumbnail below the file list.

Working in PSE 13, when I open a folder, jpeg files have a preview image, but psd files just have white sheet of paper as preview.  I have to open the file to be able to see it.  Also, there is no thumbnail of the file below the file list.Surely, there's a setting that needs to be changed. I did not have this problem with Elements 12. This is a real bother because I have to use Lightroom to see all the file types. It seems as if Elements is using the standard Windows file loader that can't show previews of file types it doesn't know including .PSD, DNG and CR2. Is that a bug or did I do something wrong? Thanks for any help.

I am using Windows 7 64 bits. Working in the editor, I never use the organizer. The screen above is not the same at all that I got in Elements 12, it was completely different and showed me a thumbnail below the listing when I single clicked on one of the files. In Elements 12, I also could see  a thumbnail of all the file types, not only the jpegs. It is as if the loader is the regular Windows used anywhere, not the right one for Elements. I hope someone understands my problem.. Thanks.

  • Program opens but becomes unresponsive before opening a webpage

Firefox became unresponsive earlier in the day. Used alt+ctrl+del to close it. A few hours later tried to open it again. The window opened, but it just stopped working when it tried to load the page. It didn't even try to restore the previous session. I get a blank white window that won't respond at all. I was using an older version, so I tried to get the newest version. It does the same thing. I haven't added anything new in months, possibly a year.

    Hi
Thanks for your immediate knowledge sharing, ya right JSP can be accessed as it resides in the server also I understand the HTML coding is more than enough for me to understand the values I need to pass to given the input type of fields with the FORM tag.
Having understood thus far, you people mention getting the HTML code but how do I get that programatically, it is that I can load the JSP/page using URL.getConnection and open the page in the browser, one way is doing VIEW SOURCE manually and getting the code, can you educate me on how to do it programatically to view source of the displaying page on a browser?
    Thanks

  • Lion Preview opens pdfs but they are blank

When I open a pdf obtained from a third party, in Preview in Mac OS 10.7.2 (Lion) the file opens but it is blank.  If I open it in Adobe Reader 9 it opens.  I did not have problems opening those files before, but since I recently made Preview my default program for opening PDFs I cannot say how long this has been a problem.
    Thank you for the help.
    Benoît

Some pdfs created in Adobe on a PC will not show in Preview, particularly if they have security options enabled. They will typically have .dll extensions.

  • I cannot get the STOP button to appear in the Navigation Toolbar, even after going through the suggestions; it will appear when the Restore Default Set window is open, but disappears as soon as DONE is clicked

The X for STOP loading the page does not appear in the Navigation Toolbar. If I do the right click, select Customize, Restore Default Set, it appears; click Done and it disappears. I have disabled the theme; disabled all extensions; reset the toolbar & controls; unchecked the acceleration. No luck.

Starting in Firefox 4, the Go, Stop and Reload buttons are combined in one button at the right end of the URL or Address bar. The button changes depending on the activity:
*green Go arrow when typing in the address bar
*red Stop ("X") button while page is loading
*gray Reload (circular arrow) when page is finished loading.
    Separate buttons are possible:
#Open Customize Toolbar window by clicking Firefox button > Option > Toolbar Layout '''''OR''''' clicking View > Toolbars > Customize if using the Menu Bar '''OR''' right-click in an empty space on a toolbar and choose Customize
#Stop and Reload buttons will show separated between the address bar and the search bar
#drag the buttons anywhere on the Navigation toolbar
#*order Reload-Stop will combine into one button
#*order Stop-Reload will remain separate buttons
#*or drag a "Separator" from the Customize window between Reload-Stop and they will remain separate
#click Done at bottom right of Customize window to finish

  • My Apple Apps are unresponsive after installing Mavericks. iBooks, Maps, App Store, iCal, etc. will open, but freeze

After installing Mavericks, I found that my Apple Apps (iBooks, App Store, Maps, iCalendar, iBooks, etc) will open but freeze or are none responsive.  I have reinstalled Mavericks, did a recovery and reinstall, almost everything that I could find in other discussions.  They only thing that helped was the recovery, until I tried to reinstall Mavericks.  Someone please help.....

OS X Recovery does restore OS X meaning Mavericks.
Make sure there's enough storage space ...
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
You'll see Available and Capacity. Make sure there's at least 15% available disk space.
The startup disk may need repairing ...
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to access the built in utilities in  OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.
Make sure to back up all important files first before using OS X Recovery.
OS X Recovery does require a broadband high speed internet connection.

yes it and Notes work fine on a virgin user account
I did a full restore of the entire MBP from my Time Machine 12-19-09 backup, sadly, to no avail. Since I didnt have this issue on that date, I cannot understand why it didnt work, ie, the problem was still there. Wierd !
To get my mail working properly again, what I did was delete the problem account, recreate a new account with same username, and am trying to restore folder by folder from Time Machine. This is not working very well:
    1. Calendar - restoring from the Application Support/Calendar folder causes a spinning beachball
    2. key desktop folders with my data - Im told that "The operation cant be completed because you dont have permisson to access some of the items".
    3. Contacts - its not obvious how to restore my contacts - where are they ?
    4. restore vs copying from the actual Finder window of a Time Machine backup isnt clear. In any case the Finder level copies yield the aforementioned error and seem to put some random number of successful copies of folders into any root folder. Not good.
Ive got a real mess on my hands now, and Ive already spent hours and hours unsorting this thing.
you are having all these permissions problems because the new user you created has a different UID than the old one. UID is different from username. it's a number. the first created user has UID 501, the second has 502 etc. UID's are what determines permissions, not user names. we can change the new user's UID to align with the old one but we need to find out what the old one was. how many users did you have. was the old user the first created on the computer?
btw, contacts are stored in homedirectory/library/application support/address book. just restore the whole directory. but don't do this yet and don't copy stuff from the TM drive via finder. use the TM interface only.
