Preview opens hundreds of files as unsaved images

Computer details:
13" Macbook Pro - mid-2012 (9.2)
2.9 GHZ
750 GB Hard Drive
8 GB RAM
OS: 10.8.2
I tried to open a single image in Preview (Version 6.0.1 (765.4)). Instead, it opened just over 500 images (out of 2300 on the hard drive) as "Untitled 1" "Untitled 2" etc. Over three hundred of those were grouped in a single window (that is, one of them was visible large, with thumbnails of all in the "drawer"). I cannot figure out why it opened the files as "Untitled", nor, in fact, why it opened them at all. I had only clicked on one to open it. I quit Preview, but upon reopening, all the "Untitled" images were back. The same thing happened when opening Preview after restart, thanks to the sometimes-helpful-sometimes-not feature that keeps track of what was open in the previous session. The only way I could get rid of them was to close their windows one at a time. Of course, when closing something that's unsaved, the computer asks whether to save it or not, but I cannot click Command-D (as in previous systems), I have to click the Don't Save button each and every time. This takes ages with so many windows open.
Well, since I had no choice, I did that for the couple hundred images that had opened in their own window(s). Then I tried to close the images in the single window. I would do Command-W, then click Don't Save. The dialog closed, but the image didn't go away. Then a new Save dialog box would open with a different "untitled" number specified, and I would do it again. And again. And again. The images, however, did not disappear. Then I saw that the names (Untitled 101, Untitled 204, etc) of some of the images I had previously attempted to close were coming back again. They had not actually closed. I could not get rid of that window with three hundred images open in it. If I quit Preview, then reopened it, ALL of the 500 plus images opened again, even the ones I had successfully closed. The application is now useless until I find a fix.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
Thank you.
Leonard

Thank you. I hope I didn't seem snarky.
No, I didn't see it as snarky. I just wanted to be clear. Communicating is difficult when face to face but on forums it's even more difficult. Often replies are directed to anyone that might be searching for answers so we try to give as complete a reply as possible.
Running a combo updater occasionally is a bit like going to the spa for a refresh. :-)
MORE INFO ON WHY RUNNING COMBO FIXES ISSUES
Apple updates available from the Software Update application are incremental updates. Delta updates are also incremental updates and are available from Apple Downloads (software updates are generally smaller than delta updates). The Combo updates contain all incremental updates and will update files that could have become corrupted.
Combo updaters will install on the same version as they're applying--no need to roll back or do a clean install. So if you think you've got a borked 10.8.4 install from a regular update, just run the 10.8.4 Combo Updater on that system.
"Delta" updaters can only take you from one version to the next. For example: 10.9.1 to 10.9.2. If somehow the 10.9.2 is missing something it should have, and that something isn't changed between 10.9.1 and 10.9.2 it will still be stale after the delta update.

  • Does preview open native raw files?

I was hoping one of the techies could answer a question for me. I can open my Nikon .nef files in preview. But, is Preview really opeining the raw file itself, of the jpg that is bundled inside of it (the one used to display on the back of the camera)? Because I always shoot in raw and like to process the photos myself, but sometimes it is nice to have some jpgs to shoot to someone that already has some of the camera's built in processing applied. I do have a program that can automatically extract the jpg from the raw file, but I thought that if Preview did the same sort of thing, then you wouldn't need the program.
    Thanks

Preview (as well as iPhoto and Aperture) all open the Raw file using the RAw Camera Bundle which is part of the OS.
None of those have the ability to extract the embedded JPG preview  though Aperture (at least) will use that while it is decoding the Raw file the first time it opens the Raw image,
You can easily export a JPG version of the RAW file from any of those three applications.

  • Photoshop will not open/create new files, cannot resize images etc

    Hi to all.
So I'll start with the basics; I am using Photoshop 7 (And yes, I am using it for a specific reason, I'm not interested in migrating to this new $1000 Creative Cloud rubbish), us Australians are getting ripped a new one and I'm happy with the $50 I paid for my copy years ago. (Please do not tell me the answer to my problems is to simply upgrade and go bankrupt. Again, I've been using 7 for a very long time without issue).
I've been using 7 for almost a decade without issue. I stick with it because so far, it's done everything I need, has been reliable up to this point, and my plugins do not work properly with newer versions. I'm also running an older-spec system (Windows XP, 3gb ram etc) as I do a lot of work with older game engines, Source Engine etc.
The issue I'm having doesn't appear to be Photoshop-7 specific however, there are many threads on this that have gone unanswered, and happen in CS3 etc and modern copies as well. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it to no avail. Basically, I cannot open files reliably with it.
If I right click any image file in explorer and click "open with -> Photoshop", photoshop will launch, however it does not open the file. I double checked to ensure the file was not just opening offscreen, however it is definitely not opening at all (as the "close" option does not become available).
If I launch photoshop manually, and click file -> open -> It will open that file, HOWEVER it will not open any more files after that.
It also is very very fickle with simple commands, such as if I hit CTRL + T to go into transform mode and then try to rescale an image, I have to click and drag the corners at least 5-6 times before it will recognize that I am doing so, and it will also ignore the resize that I perform and snap back to normal. Sometimes I have to click things more than once to get them to register. This is not occurring with any other piece of software etc, so I've ruled out that it's an issue with my mouse.
This has only been happening a day, and I cannot think of any particular system changes likely to result in this (ie no abnormal plugins installed recently, no major hardware or software changes). Unless my keyboard has a stuck key or something strange, I'm absolutely at a loss
Is there anyone who can help me, or has heard of this issue?

    I am an idiot.
I guess the scratch disk was full or something else. A simple reboot appears to have solved the problem. (I often have my system running for up to 48-64 hours at a time without reboots) as my workdays are around 36 hours at a time, so it could just be a memory constraint from XP.
Hopefully this solves the issue for anyone else who encounters it. Reboot your pc once in a while, give it a clean slate of memory to work with.

  • How can I make Preview open to actual size for all images?

In Snow Leopard, Preview open all images actual size. In Mountain Lion, vertical images (and all images larger than the screen) fit to the screen and I have to use the keyboard command to see actual size. What happened, and is there any way to fix this?

Open a PDF in Preview. Now, right-click on the toolbar and select Customize Toolbar ...
Drag the circled items from the customize panel to your toolbar and release there.
Click the middle button in the Zoom panel. The Scale will report 100%.
Your future Preview documents will open at 100% now.

  • Visio2013 preview opens a .img file that doesn't run anything

Has anyone else tried to download the Visio2013 preview? After then entire install process I click launch and what looks like a txt file opens but nothing happens... VisioProfessional_x64_en-us
Any help would be much appreciated.

I have no idea what you did, so unfortunately cannot comment on it. Since you reference the img file I have to assume you used it to either create a dvd that could be used to install it or mounted it on a virtual application so that it could be installed.
When you have the image mounted (either virtually or physically) can you explore the the files and see what is there before beginning the install?

  • Why doesn't "Preview" open my .PDF files on my computer?

    Hello Guys,
My "Preview" program stopped opening .PDF files about a week ago. The program shows up in the dock, but it doesn't display the PDF. It displays JPEG's no problem, but for some reason it' doesnt open PDF fils.It is driving me crazy. I have googled and googled, but no luck in fixing my problem.
I have even set the PDF files to "always open with preview"
Any help would be greatly appreciatd
    Thanks in advance

I suspect your problem has to do with the file on the drive that stores the preferences to open what up with what program.
I don't know exactly what that preference file is, but I know of a way to check for corruption of the preference files and once you know which one is corrupted, then we can delete it and it will rebuild.
So do the #12 and #13 OnyX routines here, that will also clear your caches and speed up your machine a little as well.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Once #13 is competed then see this Ut here.

  • Ability to Queue Rather than "Open" Hundreds of Files

Problem: I have 500 JPEG files to edit in Photoshop.  I cannot "open" more than 200 files at once for editing.
Solution: Make a "Queue" option to allow me to queue as many files as I desire.  Only one file will be open at a time for editing, and when that one is closed, the next in the queue is opened, ready to edit.
Yes, I know another solution is to buy Lightroom, but I would like to see this work using Photoshop alone or in conjunction with Bridge.

Obviously, I must halt the batch process for each file to allow editing.
No, you shoudnt necessarily have to do that.
You haven't told us what type of editing needs to be done on each file. If for example its color correction (it often is in these kind of operations) then you don't have to stop the process at all - it used to be possible to edit them and press enter to commit… Pressing enter after changing the adjustment values, will then complete the process of saving and closing the file. No Stops necessary.
This is one area where CS3 was better than Photoshop CS4. If you still have a copy of CS3 on your machine, (most smart people will have) then these actions will still work. Actions created in CS3 can be used in CS4 - they will open a dialog and allow editing of the values.
Many things including Cropping, mode changes, and most other editing processes can also be automated in this way, WITHOUT needing a stop in the action. Its retouching (image specific spotting and changes) which can't be automated

  • Preview opens previously viewed files

I highlight just one file on my desktop and double click it to see it in Preview. I get a second image from a PDF I view yesterday. Went through Preferences in Preview, but can't seem to figure out how to get to only display one image I select. It's done this before too. I highlight the image and double click and it shows me the highlighte image and the last one I viewed.

Which turns this feature off for all applications. What if you want only to disable it for one or several, but not for all?
leroydouglas points to a cnn article that talks about locking directories  under ~/Library/Saved Application State or by creating a 'template' (predefining a startup state) and then locking the saved state directory created when you quit, but apparently Preview doesn't save its state that way, at least I don't have a Preview 'saved state' directory in  ~/Library/Saved Application State.

  • Print Preview Opens "Save File" Dialog

A week or so ago (possibly related to my install of Snow Leopard, not quite sure), when I hit Preview in a Print dialog, I'm taken to a "Save" dialog before Preview opens with the file for preview. Before it would save it to a temp location somewhere and just open it for me.
Feels like the temp location it was writing to before is no longer available, but I'm not really sure where that is to check.
    Any suggestions?
    Cheers.
    Adam

CMD+P on Safari or TextEdit brings up a print dialog box, clicking on PDF button (there's no preview button), reveals the drop down menu, wherein the first option is Open PDF in Preview. This might be a change from Leopard, but I'm not on it at the moment, so can't check. There is a Preview button if you're using MS Word '04 ('08 probably works the same) and it pops up in Preview.

  • Photoshop opening Javascript File as an Image

I have a series of Applescript droplets that perform a number of functions, then launch a javascript file in Photoshop
    The codes looks like this:
This has worked consistenlty for a year, but recently started throwing an error with certain javascript files.  Photoshop is trying to open the javascript file as an image.  The "do javascript" applescript command no longer works in Photoshop.  Does anybody have any idea what I might need to change to get Phootshop to run the javascript as a script?
    Thank you

Hum, I've NOT heard of any issues with AppleScript's do javascript command… From the snippet posted I would have expected Photoshop to try open the file thats what you asked it to do… Photoshop CS5 had an issue with AppleScript's alias file specifiers… It now prefers you pass a string then inside the tell app block state its a file… Im CS5 and this works just fine…
set jsFile to (path to desktop as text) & "AlertMe.jsx" -- text/string not alias
    tell application "Adobe Photoshop CS5"
      activate
              tell current document
do javascript file jsFile -- include the specifier file
              end tell
    end tell
I only asked for the doc name in an alert but it worked…
    alert( app.activeDocument.name );

  • Why does Print Preview of a .eml file recursively open the same .eml file? I can't print it.

Hello. I saved an email from my IMAP account locally to file as offlineemail.eml. When I try to open the .eml file later in Thunderbird, it opens up ok, no problem. When I do Print Preview just before sending it to my printer, two windows pop up. In the background is the first window, the Preview itself. However, it only shows "about:blank" in the Preview body. In the foreground, a window with Title: Opening offlineemail.eml. Body: You have chosen to open: offlineemail.eml which is: eml document (27.9 KB) from: /tmp. What should Thunderbird do with this file? [Radio button] Open with [dropdown] Thunderbird (default); [Radio button] Save file; [Checkbox unchecked] Do this automatically for files like this from now on. [Push buttons] Cancel Ok. The Ok button remains greyed out until I click one of the radio buttons. I click Open with Thunderbird, the Ok button is now active, and I click Ok. Here, the same email opens up just fine again in a separate Thunderbird window. I do a Print Preview, and this whole paragraph of steps is repeated. I never see the preview. Any ideas why this would be? My Thunderbird version: 31.3.0. My OS: linux openSUSE 13.1"Bottle". File manager: Thunar 1.6.3 for the XFCE desktop.

  • Downloadable .tiff files open in quicktime, not as an image file: using mac

    I am using a Mac 10.6.3 and
    Ffirefox ver: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; en-US; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100115 Firefox/3.6
downloadable .tiff files open in firefox quicktime, not as image files, nor do they let me choose how to download or where to save or as what type of file.

    Hello andrea,
You can tell Firefox to ask you where to store your download files by changing the Firefox "Preferences". You can get the instructions on how to do it in this article: [[Downloads window]].
I would advise you to download tiff files as tiff files only otherwise they may become unviewable.
Now, to open your tiff files as images, you can change the settings on your Mac computer as follows:
#Select the tiff image that you downloaded.
#Right click on it and select "Get info"
#A windows will pop up. In this window, select the "Open with" item. Under this item, select "Preview" or any other image viewer application that you want to use.
#Next, click on the "Change All.." button. Click "Continue" in the message that is shown.
That's all. Now, your tiff files will open as images in the application that you just selected
Hope this solves your problem !

  • Preview.app in Snow Leopard doesn't open some jpg files

Preview.app in Snow Leopard doesn't open some jpg files.
Preview does't issue an error message, it behaves as I did't try to open file at all.
These images could be easy opened in iPhoto, so files seem to be OK.
I couldn't attach one such example image to this message, it's exceeds 2mb limit, but courtesy to google image could be downloaded by the link https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B56gs1tsb9aNYjA2MDdmNzUtOWY3NS00ODg1LWIzZDAtYTA 5YzFjZmZjYjRh&hl=en_US.
    What's that? Should I file a bug?

Unfortunately, it sounds as if your internal disk failed (hardware failure).
    Things to try:
    (1) Boot from your Apple Hardware Test CD/DVD, which sometimes is a separate disk or sometimes is on the original OS install disk. Run the tests, all of them, to see what is amiss.
    (2) Reset PRAM as described in  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379 . I don't think this is likely to help because even though your startup disk is not being selected, it seems that your internal disk is simply unable to be found or mounted, implying hardware failure more than software. But it's worth a try.
Probably time to take your computer in for repairs, either at the Apple Store or to an authorized Apple repair shop. Most likely they will simply replace your drive. You could also ask them to mount the old drive in an enclosure to see if files can be copied from it if you don't have a backup.
