Preview opens old PDF's

In Snow leopard when I opened a PDF and quit preview and opened another pdf only the most recent PDF would open,
IN LION every PDF opens unless I close it in
Under prefences and general what is the difference between
Open all files in one window
Open groups of files in the same window
Open each file in its own window

It's controlled by a global setting in System Preferences -> General "Restore windows when quiting and re-opening apps.  Uncheck it.

  • Can't open old PDF's

We recently got new updated computers but we kept some of our old files. I downloaded the adobe reader x and everything, I still can't open old PDF's (saved and unsaved ones like from my email). Something with Microsoft Word comes up, and all funny writing and numbers and such! The only way I can view an old PDF's is I save them again, go to the Adobe Reader X icon on my desktop, and open the file(s) from there. It's quite a hassle because sometimes I don't want to save something, or have more than one PDF open! Help please. (I'm pretty much computer "stupid", so it might be just something small!)
If you have any ideas for me, feel free to reply below or email me at [email address deleted by host]
    Thank you so much (:

  • Yosemite: preview opens all pdf's in same window even after setting change

After upgrading to Yosemite, Preview always opens new pdf's in prior window with sidebar including other documents. I have changed the setting "when opening new files" to "open each file in its own window" and restarted the program and the computer more than once since. No fix.
This is extremely irritating and creates an extra step of me having to double click the new document  each time it is opened in order for it to open in its own window as the settings already dictate.
This affects my workflow and is a real nuisance, thanks in advance for any guidance.

  • Preview opens multiple pdf's in same window

Since upgrading to Mavericks, Preview frequently (but not always) opens pdf's in an already open window.  The preferences are set to open each pdf in its own window, but that is being ignored.  If I could easily separate them, it would not be such a problem, but I can't find a way to do that.  How do I fix this annoying bug?  Thanks

Without this radio button in Preview's preference selected files are opened in separated windows:
If you don't want groups opened at the same time to be in the same window unselect the radio button below it.
OR, select the last radio button.

  • Reader won't open old PDFs

I have an old CD from 1994 that I purchased way back then and the modern Adobe Reader 9 will not read the files.
When the new reader opens the files they are full of Control Characters instead of graphics and text.
I still have an old PC with Windows ME (yeah, you read that right) and Acrobat Reader 3.0 that reads the files fine, so I know the CD is not corrupt. But I really don't want to keep that hunk of junk PC around just to read this CD. I suppose I could uninstall Acrobat and install the old version, but that would stink..
Is there a converter to make these files readable on a "real" computer?

    Hello, Lroux:
I have tried every way I can imagine to open the sample document you posted. I have tried a multitude of open source PDF readers/creators/converters as well as Web-based tools for such to no avail. Reader 3.0.1 which I installed on one of my test boxes will in fact open the first page of the document, but the font appears as it was done with an extremely shaky hand and no other pages of the document will display.
The way I see it, you have a couple options. You could install the trial version of Acrobat which works for 30 days. Included with that is a PDF document printer which you should be able to use to "print" to from Reader 3.0. Personally, I would be concerned that once Acrobat was installed, the document would no longer display properly in Reader 3.0 but it's possible it will work as expected.
If it was me and I wanted to have access to the files in question on the CD, I would:
    1. Search the manufacturer's Website for copies of the documents in question and save them to my system for safe keeping.
    2. If the documents are not available online, I would install Microsoft's XPS Document Writer (MS's version of PDF). Using the XPS doc writer as your printer, "print" the documents which will save them as a XPS document (proprietary image format). You would lose the ability to copy/search text but you would at the very least have all the information within the documents and wouldn't have to keep that beast around just to have access to the documents in question.

  • Why doesn't "Preview" open my .PDF files on my computer?

    Hello Guys,
My "Preview" program stopped opening .PDF files about a week ago. The program shows up in the dock, but it doesn't display the PDF. It displays JPEG's no problem, but for some reason it' doesnt open PDF fils.It is driving me crazy. I have googled and googled, but no luck in fixing my problem.
I have even set the PDF files to "always open with preview"
Any help would be greatly appreciatd
    Thanks in advance
    -Miguel

I suspect your problem has to do with the file on the drive that stores the preferences to open what up with what program.
I don't know exactly what that preference file is, but I know of a way to check for corruption of the preference files and once you know which one is corrupted, then we can delete it and it will rebuild.
So do the #12 and #13 OnyX routines here, that will also clear your caches and speed up your machine a little as well.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Once #13 is competed then see this Ut here.

  • Preview: open all PDFs in one window

There used to be an option in Preview to open a group of PDFs in one window. There still is this option in v3.0.4 except that you can only do it with images now, and not PDFs.
So is there a way around this; is there any way to get a group of PDFs to open in one window. Say a keyboard shortcut maybe?

    Hi Christiaan
Tiger's preview has seemed to have lost a bit from its previous Panther version, but here is a workaround.
You can batch print by creating a printer icon on your Desktop.
In Printer Setup Utility, select the printer under Printers, choose Create Desktop Printer. This will allow you to drag multiple items onto it on the desktop and batch print them.

  • Preview opens blank PDF

I have some PDF files that I created on my Windows PC before I switched to Mac that open up as blank pages in Preview.app. They where created using ScanSoft PDF Create!, using PDF Version 1.4 (Acrobat 5.x), the same one that's used by Apple in its PDF generation.
I am able to open these same documents in Adobe Acrobat Reader with no problems at all. This seems to be an incompatibility with 3rd party PDF generation utilities and Preview...
Isn't the purpose of PDF that it is compatible across all platforms? Can anyone suggest a solution?
Black MacBook, Intel iMac & Mini Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I found this software that lets you setup a virtual printer to generate PDF's even from Adobe Acrobat Reader. Here's the link:
    http://www.codepoetry.net/projects/cups-pdf-for-mosx
This is the only way I have found to be able to convert those PDF's to a version that Preview.app can open.

  • Opening 'old' PDF files using Adobe Reader 9

Hi all, has anyone else had problems opening PDF files created prior to mid August 2006 using the latest reader? I can read these files ok using Version 7.1 which fortunately i still have on one of my systems. It only seems to be those provided by a specific utility company (Gas/Electric bills) is there any way of determining what is hanging version 9? It seems to start loading & then just registers as 'Not responding' in task Manager.... Still using Windows 2000; SEMPRON 3400+; 2Gbyte memory system hangs, yet other system using version 7.1 Windows 2000; DURON 1400; 512mbyte memory works fine.
    any ideas??????

I have just installed Adobe Reader 9. I am getting frequent system hangs (cannot do anything without cold re-boot) when using the product, in particular when using forms documents provided by Companies House, a UK government agency.

  • Cannot open old pdfs -- can anyone help?

    Hi,
I have a CD with some PDFs that were created in 2004 and cannot get them to open. I get the dreaded "...is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged..." message, which seems to result from a number of causes, none of which are similar to my problem.
Anyway, until I got a Vista computer a couple of years ago, the files opened fine.  Even though I couldn't open them on my Vista computer, I could still open them on my XP laptop.  Now I cannot open them on the laptop either, even though I tried Adobe Reader 9 and 10, then replaced them with Adobe Reader 6 , which came on the disc with the PDF.   I know the disc is not damaged because I can open all other file types.
Can anybody advise me?  These pdfs are a auto manual and I cannot fix my car without them.
    Thanks,
    Neal Engledow

    Try67,
Thanks for responding. I have tried dragging files onto my desktop but still cannot open them.  I created a workspace on acrobat.com but get an error message when I try to upload one of those files (other pdfs upload fine) the error message says "svr.Unknown
[Unknown] Stream does not represent a PDF document."  Can I attempt to e-mail one to you?  I can e-mail them to myself, but they still don't open.
I also have tried three other pdf readers without luck.

  • How do I open a pdf on a web page in Safari without Acrobat Reader?

At the moment I have removed Acrobat Reader 10.3.1 because it conflicts with Safari. Preview is a perfectly fine pdf reader (and with lots of very nice features) but I don't see how I can make Preview open a pdf from a web page until it has been downloaded to file. And I have found at least one site that will not download to file before opening.

Right-click in the PDF when it's displayed in Safari and select Open with Preview from the popup menu. Depending on how the PDF is embedded in the web page, this may not be possible.

  • Anyone has any idea how I can open damaged Pdf files?

    Hello!
I have an issue with trying to open old PDF files in Adobe Reader 9 Standard.
The files were created in 2000 and they need to be retrieved to be put on a server.
The files are on cds. I tried saving them on the desktop and opening from there and we still received the Insufficient Data for an Image
I downloaded older versions of Adobe and in all of them i either couldn't open it or received the cyclic redundancy error.
    Regards

    Hello!
You must try opening on different system
    Plus
Try copy & paste on different location on ur system eg. C: drive or my document.
check the attributes , hope its not on 'Read only'.
Are all PDF files on that CD giving problem?
-> You can use the PDF optimizer to change the pdf to that of an earlier version to see if the problem goes away
Also i recommend you to check the links below.
