Preview opens photos in several windows

Hello,
When I select multiple photos in the Finder and I open them in Preview, the app almost always opens 2 windows : one that displays 1 or 2 photos and another one with all other photos.
Despite I choosed to display all files in ONE window in Preferences.
Here is a video of this problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YltBsB8riro
Could you tell me how to fix that, please?
Thanks!
Xavier

thank you very much, Charlie
I figured it had to be something simple like a preference that I was missing. But I was rooting around in the Preview app preferences...
I sincerely appreciate the quick reply.

• Can't open photos in separate windows in iPhoto 9.5

How can I view multiple photos simultaneously in order to compare shots side by side? Previously (in iPhoto '08) I was able to open thumbnails in individual edit windows and drag them next to each other to view. Now the images open within the same window, and opening more than one image makes each one smaller in order to fit in the same window, which defeats the purpose. I couldn't find any settings to change in Preferences or in menu items.

Wow, that stinks. Many people take multiple shots of the same thing and need to view them closely in order to discern which is the best. That's very difficult to do if it's not possible to enlarge more than one image at a time.
So far I have not found one improvement with the latest versions of iLife/iWork after upgrading from all my '08 versions. In fact, it's not even possible to open iWork '08 documents in the latest versions of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. Apple, you are alienating your customers. Are you listening?

• How to stop preview opening pictures in same window?

I know that when you open two or more pictures at the same time, preview opens them in the same window.
However, before today, when I double-clicked on one picture, it would open in preview. Then when I opened a second picture, it would open in a new preview window so I could arrange the pictures side-by-side. Now when I open a second picture, it brings it up as another side 'tab' in the window of the first picture.
I discovered that if I right-click on the tab picture, I can select "open in new window" but then if I open a third picture, it closes the picture I had up (the one I removed from the original window) and replaces it with the new picture.
Please help! Thanks.

I wish this worked for me, but it doesn't.
That preference is set clearly: "open each file in its own window", but Preview does not obey this preference.
This behavior started with Mavericks for me.
Very annoying since every time I open a file I have to go to thumbnails view, click right on the new file, and select "open in a new window".
Very annoying and time-wasting.

• Double-click won't open photo in new window

so double clicking a photo in my library used to open it in a separate window where i could have a closer look or edit the photo, only, now, when i double-click a photo, the separate window opens, flashes the photo for a millisecond and then appears and remains blank. anyone had this issue before? know how to fix it? happy days!

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

• Preview opens jpegs as blank?

Preview opens jpegs as black windows (previously worked fine)
All software up-to-date
tried a couple of the fixes shown in earlier discussions including:
"Solution was to quit preview and go to user>library>preferences and delete the 3 preview .plist files (com.apple.Preview.bookmarks.plist etc) and voila!"
but unfortunately didn't work..
Can anyone help?

Yours is not a common complaint.
Standard debugging procedure would be to use Safe Mode (only essential Apple extensions loaded) to see if the problem occurs there. If no problems in Safe Mode, the trouble may lie in your extensions.
Next on the list is to log in with a different account. If you don't have one, create one, don't use the default Guest account.
Next on the list would be a re-install over the existing. This is intended to erase nothing, just replace anything damaged or missing.
Next is to re-install onto a blank drive ( either a new drive or make TWO sets of Backups and wipe the drive and install from scratch, then restore the rest). [ I recommend the new drive, they are cheap and the process is easier.] Then when adding back extensions, do so one or two at a time, and watch carefully to see if symptoms change.

• Why will Preview Not open photos now?

I'm a photographer and have used Preview to open and view photos for several months now. I did so two days ago, but now when I try to open any photo it says I do not have "Permission" to open the file and directs me to Preview>File>Permission. I'm already listed to be able to read and write images, so I do not know the problem it's having.
Any help would be great.

You cannot open the email or you cannot open the attachment in the email?

• HT201317 I am trying to upload photos from my Windows 7 machine, and I was told to drag them into the photo stream in the iCloud control panel. I have downloaded the control panel several times, but cannot find the place to upload the photos from my Windo

I am trying to upload photos from my Windows 7 desktop, and was told to go to the iCloud control panel and drag the photos into the
upload to photo stream icon. I have downloaded the contol panel several times and cannot find the icon to get this done. HELP

If you're trying to add photos to photo stream on your PC, you drag them to your photo stream uploads folder (normally My Pictures\Photo Stream\Uploads).

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

• IWeb08; Photo Gallery: Can I have Photo open in a new window?

In the old version of iWeb I had a photo gallery and when a person clicked on the image it would open in a new window. I preferred this to what it does now where a person clicks and they are take to a "review" page of all of the images on the page.
Is it possible to have iWeb 08 go back to the old way of doing this? To open the image in a new window instead?

Curtis:
It's not possible without editing some of the java script files that are associated with the page. Sorry but that's out of my league, and most others here as well. But some of the other members here, like Tom Gewecke, do have the expertise for that.

• Why is the preview "Open" window so slow?

Hey, there guys!
I am wondering why it is that the new "Open" window is so slow in preview. It opens slowly, and when I select a folder, it takes a long time to index the folder's contents. However, I can open a file in preview using finder just fine. The indexing times are almost identical to those that I got when I first bought my mac. I noticed that after the update to Mountain Lion, there was a tab added to the top left called "iCloud". I'm wondering if this has anything to do with it?
My question is: what I can do to increase the speed of the Preview "Open" command? I have seen a couple of forum posts regarding people having issues opening files, but none of them talked about the open window itself being slow.
Thanks for your help!
- Alpha Spartan A

Agree the new ios6 is much slower. I found this post by doing a search to find out if it was only me. I've done off & on & a soft reset. Neither helped. Everything seems to load much slower & hangs.
Maybe the new apps aren't optimized yet. However, I had one of my worst experiences with the Apple App Store. One would think they'd know how to optimize their own site & app.
I just hope it's not a bloat issue because the "upgrades" are not worth the performance trade offs to me.
Also, the iMaps are definitely not ready for prime time. I tried getting directions between two locations that were very mainstream and the app said it couldn't provide directions. I'll take Google without turn by turn, thank you. At least let us have a choice and let the best app win.

• Can't Open All Photos in Edit Window?

Today I've finished editing and putting together a "Slideshow" for a professional project. Then, when I opened another "Album" and tried to simply edit a photo, the photos from that album and my other albums (except for the album with the photos of the Slideshow) wouldn't open in the editing window.
Help? Please.

I have used Safari, Firefox and IE (latest version of each). I think (however) that I figured out what the bug is. I copied an address out of the address line in my browser and pasted it onto a web page. I then set it up as a hyperlink and clicked the "Open link in new window" box. However, this does not work.
I had to type the name of the site I was linking to, then link the word to the site and everything works fine.
Strange but that is how it worked out.

• Opening b&w photos on a windows pc that have been edited on a mac

Hello
I have changed colour photos on my mac to b&w using photoshop elements. I have saved them as JPEG.
When my cients try to open the photos on a windows pc the b&w ones will not open, but the colour ones will. Can anyone help me with this problem???
Thankyou!

The Mac either corrupted the JPG metadata or saved the photos with an invalid end-of-file marker.
See if your clients can open the photos with the free XnView viewer:
http://www.xnview.com/
and save it from there.

• When I click on firefox in taskbar, it does not open in a new window and shows previews.

I have firefox 14 and windows 7. firefox is pinned to taskbar. When I click on the firefox icon in taskbar, I want it to open in a separate window and not show preview.

Yes. Thank you. Tutorial solves half the problem. The firefox icon no longer shows previews but I am still unable to open a new window by clicking on it. I would like the icon to open a separate window every time I click on it. Instead, it opens only 1 window. Please help. Thank you.
