Preview opens previously viewed files

I highlight just one file on my desktop and double click it to see it in Preview. I get a second image from a PDF I view yesterday. Went through Preferences in Preview, but can't seem to figure out how to get to only display one image I select. It's done this before too. I highlight the image and double click and it shows me the highlighte image and the last one I viewed.

Which turns this feature off for all applications. What if you want only to disable it for one or several, but not for all?
leroydouglas points to a cnn article that talks about locking directories  under ~/Library/Saved Application State or by creating a 'template' (predefining a startup state) and then locking the saved state directory created when you quit, but apparently Preview doesn't save its state that way, at least I don't have a Preview 'saved state' directory in  ~/Library/Saved Application State.
I found how to do it in the  Terminal here

  • HT2506 Why does Preview also open previously viewed files when I double click on a file to view it?

Trying to figure out how to stop it from doing this - finding it irritating - or is it a 'feature'?
Already checked the preferences menu, but no luck

Ha! Just figured it out, thanks to checking the discussions - in the System Prefs, under 'General', unchecked 'restore windows when quitting & re-opening apps' & that seems to have done the trick

  • Is there a way to stop .oam files from previewing as previously placed files in Muse CC?

I'm placing a new .oam file in a new website I'm creating in Muse but it previews as a previous .oam file that I used in a previous website. When preview the page on a browser it's fine but it's making it hard to place the .oam file in the correct position. Is there a way to stop this from happening so it previews correctly in Muse?

If you're using Safari as your web browser go to "Safari -> Preferences...", select "General" from the toolbar and uncheck the "Open safe files after downloading" box.
Other browsers should have a similar setting in their prefs.

  • One problem - now another - opening and viewing files

When I try to open an AVI file - I get the sound fine - with NO video at all. Any ideas? I have Quicktime Pro.
    Thanks

Well I’m still wondering if it is compatibility issues because I’m also having problem with Photoshop CS5. These 3 are all bought at the same time (PC, Illustrator and Photoshop installers). The problem I’m having in Photoshop is not that too important, every time I Ctrl+O to view files, all PSD are shown in white paper like icons, no preview, and saving as well.
Or I just purchased a corrupted or pirated installers… Adobe updates are done every time I’m prompted.

  • Quicktime 10.1 Previously viewed files show up on launch

Since upgrading to Lion, when ever I launch quicktime, a file that I previously viewed opens up again. This happens even when I close the file prior to quitting quick time.
In fact I have to close the file 2 or 3 times for it to stop. What am I missing?

    Thank you Kirk,
I noticed it for shut down and restart, but was not aware that it applied to apps as well. Now I know.

  • Mac-with Leopard-Adobe Reader 8.1 will not open previously scanned files

Have a Intel Mac and use Leopard.
When using Reader 7.1 previously scanned files (eg. recipes) always opened. Upgraded to Adobe Reader 8.1
Now, on a number of them, the icon is black, and when I attempt to open them I get the
following message..for say a scanned recipe..
"Adobe Reader could not open "Won Ton Soup" because it is either not a supported file or
because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and
    wasn't correctly decoded)."
Tried latest version of Adobe Reader..no luck.
    Suggestions ? Thanks.

    >previously scanned files (eg. recipes) always opened.
    Were they actually PDF's?
If not, it could be that you had Acrobat instead of Reader before.

  • Does preview open native raw files?

I was hoping one of the techies could answer a question for me. I can open my Nikon .nef files in preview. But, is Preview really opeining the raw file itself, of the jpg that is bundled inside of it (the one used to display on the back of the camera)? Because I always shoot in raw and like to process the photos myself, but sometimes it is nice to have some jpgs to shoot to someone that already has some of the camera's built in processing applied. I do have a program that can automatically extract the jpg from the raw file, but I thought that if Preview did the same sort of thing, then you wouldn't need the program.
    Thanks

Preview (as well as iPhoto and Aperture) all open the Raw file using the RAw Camera Bundle which is part of the OS.
None of those have the ability to extract the embedded JPG preview  though Aperture (at least) will use that while it is decoding the Raw file the first time it opens the Raw image,
You can easily export a JPG version of the RAW file from any of those three applications.

  • Captivate 5 Crashing while opening previously edited file from the same day!

I have today been working on a simple Captivate 5 file. At the time of crashing it had around 9 slides and a one question quiz as I hadnt done much work on it. Im running Captivate 5 on a Windows XP 32bit machine with 4gb RAM and a capable processor. I tried to open a seperate project alongside the one mentioned in order to take a few slides from it. When doing so Captivate crashed. I tried to re open the original document ignoring the second file and got an error message. Some details are captured below. It wouldnt let me take the full detail for some reason but the file it was reporting on is below as its the version of Captivate im running etc.
I rebooted my machine and reopened the original file no problem. Again tried to open the second file and the same occured. I then tried another reboot only this time, and ever since, it will no longer open the original file which was fine. I have the files in  my dropbox and used a remote connection to check these files on  my Mac at home. They opened in Captivate 5 there without problem. I managed both files so know that the files are ok. It has to be to do with the installation on  my Windows machine. I have run all of the available updates and had no joy.
I should point out that Captivate still works for new projects. I can just not open existing ones.
Can anyone offer any advice on how I may fix this? Its driving me crazy as im up against it with deadlines and this hasnt helped me much today.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

  • IE opens previously viewed PDF after Reader 10 update

We recently updated to Reader X (10.1.1)  Some users view portfolios through Equifax.  The documents are .pdfs and when they browse through the portfolio and open multiple documents the previous document opens for the previous customer.  Any other portfolios open have the same result.  The initial .pdf doc opens for all subsequent tries.
Now we resolved the issue by changing the IE setting under Temp Internet Files and History Settings to have the page Check for newer versions of stored pages - Every time I visit the webpage.  My question is what changed from previous versions of Adobe Reader to cause this IE setting to be required to change and is there a way within Reader we could set a value so that we don't have to adjust our IE Policy?  Checking for stored pages everytime can slow browser performance.

    Hi,
I do not see any reason for this to not work.
Is there any difference between the preferences for RX and RXI. Please go to "edit" -> "Preferences" -> "Security(Enhanced)" and uncheck "Enable protected mode at startup".
Are you able to open any pdf from command line with the same command:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe"  <<PDF_FILE>>
    Thanks,

  • Preview opens hundreds of files as unsaved images

    Computer details:
    13" Macbook Pro - mid-2012 (9.2)
    2.9 GHZ
    750 GB Hard Drive
    8 GB RAM
    OS: 10.8.2
I tried to open a single image in Preview (Version 6.0.1 (765.4)). Instead, it opened just over 500 images (out of 2300 on the hard drive) as "Untitled 1" "Untitled 2" etc. Over three hundred of those were grouped in a single window (that is, one of them was visible large, with thumbnails of all in the "drawer"). I cannot figure out why it opened the files as "Untitled", nor, in fact, why it opened them at all. I had only clicked on one to open it. I quit Preview, but upon reopening, all the "Untitled" images were back. The same thing happened when opening Preview after restart, thanks to the sometimes-helpful-sometimes-not feature that keeps track of what was open in the previous session. The only way I could get rid of them was to close their windows one at a time. Of course, when closing something that's unsaved, the computer asks whether to save it or not, but I cannot click Command-D (as in previous systems), I have to click the Don't Save button each and every time. This takes ages with so many windows open.
Well, since I had no choice, I did that for the couple hundred images that had opened in their own window(s). Then I tried to close the images in the single window. I would do Command-W, then click Don't Save. The dialog closed, but the image didn't go away. Then a new Save dialog box would open with a different "untitled" number specified, and I would do it again. And again. And again. The images, however, did not disappear. Then I saw that the names (Untitled 101, Untitled 204, etc) of some of the images I had previously attempted to close were coming back again. They had not actually closed. I could not get rid of that window with three hundred images open in it. If I quit Preview, then reopened it, ALL of the 500 plus images opened again, even the ones I had successfully closed. The application is now useless until I find a fix.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Leonard

Thank you. I hope I didn't seem snarky.
No, I didn't see it as snarky. I just wanted to be clear. Communicating is difficult when face to face but on forums it's even more difficult. Often replies are directed to anyone that might be searching for answers so we try to give as complete a reply as possible.
Running a combo updater occasionally is a bit like going to the spa for a refresh. :-)
MORE INFO ON WHY RUNNING COMBO FIXES ISSUES
Apple updates available from the Software Update application are incremental updates. Delta updates are also incremental updates and are available from Apple Downloads (software updates are generally smaller than delta updates). The Combo updates contain all incremental updates and will update files that could have become corrupted.
Combo updaters will install on the same version as they're applying--no need to roll back or do a clean install. So if you think you've got a borked 10.8.4 install from a regular update, just run the 10.8.4 Combo Updater on that system.
"Delta" updaters can only take you from one version to the next. For example: 10.9.1 to 10.9.2. If somehow the 10.9.2 is missing something it should have, and that something isn't changed between 10.9.1 and 10.9.2 it will still be stale after the delta update.

  • Why doesn't "Preview" open my .PDF files on my computer?

    Hello Guys,
My "Preview" program stopped opening .PDF files about a week ago. The program shows up in the dock, but it doesn't display the PDF. It displays JPEG's no problem, but for some reason it' doesnt open PDF fils.It is driving me crazy. I have googled and googled, but no luck in fixing my problem.
I have even set the PDF files to "always open with preview"
Any help would be greatly appreciatd
    Thanks in advance
    -Miguel

I suspect your problem has to do with the file on the drive that stores the preferences to open what up with what program.
I don't know exactly what that preference file is, but I know of a way to check for corruption of the preference files and once you know which one is corrupted, then we can delete it and it will rebuild.
So do the #12 and #13 OnyX routines here, that will also clear your caches and speed up your machine a little as well.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Once #13 is competed then see this Ut here.

  • Preview opens previous opened when open new one

Every time I want to preview a photo, multiple photos I have previously opened also pop up.
Very annoying! Any suggestions on what to check/change or what I am doing incorrectly?
    Thank you!

Yep, that's a new Lion "feature". Still buggy in the implementation, in my opinion; as you point out, if you open a specific document, rather than just starting the application, the documents that were open when last run also pop up. And there currently appear to be no way to tailor this, you either have the feature or you don't.
If you'd rather not have this feature at all, go to the General menulet in System Preferences, and uncheck the "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" checkbox.

  • Visio2013 preview opens a .img file that doesn't run anything

Has anyone else tried to download the Visio2013 preview? After then entire install process I click launch and what looks like a txt file opens but nothing happens... VisioProfessional_x64_en-us
Any help would be much appreciated.

I have no idea what you did, so unfortunately cannot comment on it. Since you reference the img file I have to assume you used it to either create a dvd that could be used to install it or mounted it on a virtual application so that it could be installed.
When you have the image mounted (either virtually or physically) can you explore the the files and see what is there before beginning the install?

  • Can no longer open previous project files in the latest version of FCPX (10.1.1)

In the latest version of FCPX (10.1.1), you can no longer access/open projects from the button in the lower left corner. Clicking on that button now merely brings up an index of clips in the current project's timeline. Why is that? And how do I now access my project library? By the way, clicking File>Open Library does nothing.

You should learn about the changes introduced in 10.1, which are very significant and much for the better.
The most important is the introduction of Libraries.
There is no longer a "project browser". Libraries are the containers of your events and projects, and can be stored anywhere.
The older versions had two buttons - the one you mention was already there, and opens the "Timeline Index", like it already did. The "project browser" does not exist anymore, and therefore the respective button does not exist either.
I suggest you follow some great explanations about the new features here:
