Preview PDF Specification Support

I am a developer working on a PDF writing tool for a different platform and am having some compatibility troubles with PDFs generated by the tool and read in Preview.app. They function correctly in other PDF readers, but not in Preview. Specifically, I've been unable to get PDF Actions and ObjStm objects to render (The exact same PDF renders fine in other readers).
Does anyone know what version of the PDF specification Preview.app (or the OS X PDF libraries) supports? Is there support for ObjStm or PDF actions in the OS X PDF libs?
I wasn't sure if this is the right place to ask, since this is a dev question. I figured since it's not related to OS X development, I'd try here first though.
Thanks!

The best place for dev questions is probably the dev forums:
http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=727
I understand the OS X pdf function does 1.3 normally and 1.4 if there is transparency.
In my experience Preview is definitely not a complete substitute for Adobe Reader.

  • Preview does not support PDF features

I have generated a number of PDF files in Adobe Acrobat that are questionnaires. The intent is to have the users fill out forms, click radio buttons and check boxes within the PDF and using buttons embedded on the questionnaire email them back to me. I have run into many problems with my questionnaires by Mac OSX users. It turns out when they open my Questionnaire (PDF) Preview launches instead of Adobe Reader. Evidentially Preview is the default application for PDFs. Preview does not support "calculations" "actions" for buttons including "submit a form" and does not auto font size in the forms they fill out.
Is there something in Preview that causes this issue that preview users need to do? It clearly appears Preview is not a good substitute for Abode Reader that is free and the standard for PDF viewing.

The issue I have run into is that Adobe has generated a way that you can distribute forms to a large group of people, they can in return send back the data that they filled out. Acrobat can then tabulate the data automatically. It is a very powerful tool.
I don't doubt it. However, it is a purely Acrobat solution. I'm sure there is other software that can do the same thing. Have you considered a web site instead? You could build an HTML page to distribute to people and it would have all the same features. Plus, it would work with any web browser.
The problem I have is Apple has decided to make Preview their default PDF reader application. When a Mac users opens the PDF file things may not work and they do not understand why. They get frustrated and quit filling out the form, therefore locking out getting data from all Mac users. This is an unnecessary burden to put on Mac users!
Then why don't you pick a method that would work with a stock MacOS X machine?
Adobe Reader is free so why compete with a free application??
Adobe Reader is free for end users to download. If Apple included it as part of MacOS X, the would have to pay Adobe many millions of dollars. Furthermore, while Acrobat Reader does have many nice features, it is a slow, bloated behemoth that fewer and fewer people want to use anymore. That is why there are so many other PDF viewers these days - people don't like Acrobat Reader.
I just think they should not have a fully functional PDF reader as the default application for PDFs.
Preview is fully functional. But Apple can't read Adobe's mind and support every new feature that Adobe throws in to try to keep customers. Your PDF solution is an Adobe solution. Adobe software just isn't as ubiquitous as it used to be. Times change. I suggest you look into some other method of form distribution, such as HTML and Javascript.

  • Preview PDF crashes in LiveCycle Designer

I'm new to LiveCycle designer and PDF development and am working through the first LiveCycle Designer tutorial. When I click on Preview PDF, LiveCycle crashes -
MicroSoft Visual C++ Runtime Library -
This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.
I am running on Windows 7, have Adobe Acrobat X Pro and Reader 9.4.0 installed.

Thanks. I tried that and it did not work. Ultimately I fixed it by uninstalling Reader and installing the latest version.

  • PDF Specification Version

    Hi,
According to the documentation, BI Publisher (v. 10.1.3.2) supports Adobe Acrobat 5.0 (PDF specification version 1.4). I suppose this means that the pdf documents used as templates must be of a version no newer than 1.4.
We consider using Adobe LiveCycle Designer for creating the pdf templates, so I would like to know the release plans for supporting newer versions of pdf.
    Thanks in advance.

Are the PDFs just images, or are they text? I know the pages you are scanning look like text to you, but that doesn't mean the files you end up with contain text - they may just be "photographs" of the pages. You can check this by selecting the text cursor in Adobe Reader and trying to select a few words. If you can't do that, you just have an image.
If all you have are images, just save them as images in PNG format - PDF isn't getting you anything.

  • Preview does not support the raw file format of the nikon d300s

preview does not support the files and snow leopard does not provide icon previews either.
is there any date when there will be support for these type of files?
any suggestions on how to open the NEF files with preview in the meantime there is an update?
    regards

any suggestions on how to open the NEF files with preview in the meantime there is an update?
Not with Preview, but Nikon Transfer v1.0.1.3005 is so far happy with 10.6.1 and you may see if there is any advantage there. Take the card out of the 300s and use a reader if you have to.
It usually takes from 3 to 6 months before Apple releases a new/specific Nikon RAW related update, so you are at the beginning of that cycle it would appear...all you can do is wait, sorry.

  • WHERE ON MY COMPUTER DO I FIND THE USER SPECIFIC SUPPORT FILES FOR FIREFOX?

I am unable to print anything from the web. When I change user names, I am able to print. I called apple computer and they located the problem to be in the specific support files in firefox, but could not tell me where to find them. I am told that if I can find the specific support files, I can cure my problem. Currently, when I try to print, nothing happens and if I try to make a pdf of anything on line, it is blank when opened. Firefox used to work just fine.

    Hi massurfer,
I am not sure that you need regedit, but this might be helpful,

This explanation of customizing localstore.rdf looks possibly helpful as well:

  • Why certain functionality works in Adobe Acrobat, but not in LiveCycle Preview PDF?

I have some simple logic in a LiveCycle form that will hide a subform when I click a checkbox.  When I save as dynamic PDF and open in Adobe Acrobat 9, it works fine, but when I test the .xdp in LiveCycle Preview PDF it does not.  I'm new to JavaScript and have wasted some time troubleshooting what I thought was a problem, only to find out it was working.  Am I doing something that is not capatible with Preview PDF?
Attached below are images of hierarchy, design, and code.  I realize the hierarchy is more complex than it needs to be.  It is an excerpt I built to test this functionality, based on the full document.
    Thanks.
    form1.diag.Cervical.show::click - (JavaScript, client)
    if (this.rawValue == 1) {narrative.Cervical.mre.presence = "visible"} else {narrative.Cervical.mre.presence = "hidden"}
    form1.narrative.Cervical.mre::initialize - (JavaScript, client)
    this.presence = "hidden";

Did you made the form as Dynamic and Interactive in the preview..
         1) Goto File menu -> Form Properties and select Defaults tab. Change the Default Render Format as Dynamic XML form
         2) Select the Preview Tab. Set the Preview type as "Interactive Form" and Preview Adobe XML form as Dynamic XML form
         3) Finally while saving the PDF select Save As Type as "Adobe Dynamic XML Form".
    Thanks

  • Preview PDF tab unavailable on Designer 9 with Reader 9

    Hello,
I just begin learning LifeCycle and I have a problem viewing the preview PDF tab in the designer.
The problemlooks the the same as discribed ther : http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/331/331391.html
But, I checked the solution and the check box they suggest to check is already checked.
    Can someone help me ?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
In this situation it sometimes helps to open Reader (or Acrobat) first AND THEN open LC Designer.
Not a full solution. If you search the forum, people have proposed more robust solutions.
    Good luck,

  • Table not showing up in Preview PDF

    Hello all,
I am having an issue with a form that I am making in Adobe LiveCycle Designer ES.
The project that I am working on deals with making a standarized quoteing template to make getting quotes out faster and whatnot.
The particular quote template that i am making will have the same information in the table for the Description column.
So I made the table using the Insert Table wizard and added the information that will not change from quote to quote.  *I took actual info off for legal reasons*
So I got the table looking the way i wanted it to, and thought great let me check it out in the "Preview PDF" tab.  So I clicked the preview tab and scrolled down to the table and only the headings show up  "/  *You will see this in the pictures below*
    In "Design View".
    In "Preview PDF".
    Any ideas?
I would appreciate any help that you guys can give me!
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks pguerett,
I sent over an email to the above address.  Thanks for your help.
Hopefully this issue is solved for me soon
    Thank you

  • Error message "failed to load an application resource (internal error)" when checking form in LiveCycle preview PDF

After creating a form, when I click on Preview PDF, I am now getting an error message "Failed to load an application resource (internal error)". Not sure why this has started recently, but it makes it impossible to check my forms for clients before I send them. I can open them outside of the program in Adobe Reader, but it is faster to check the form within LiveCycle and change them if necessary. Please help!

I fixed mine! In Reader 9 and 10.0 I had disabled the ReadOutLoud feature as it kept popping up whenever it felt like it, and I don't need ReadOutLoud. What worked for me was first to purge the system of Reader 9 - the uninstall routine leaves stuff behind. Then I went into the Reader 10 program folder, located the plug_ins sub folder, and renamed it to oldplug_ins. Then I ran the repair routine which recreated the plug_ins subfoler.. All now works, except that the <expletive deleted> ReadOutLoud is up to its old tricks again, but I can live with that for now.
    Hope this helps.

    Dear All,
I know how to creat PDF file in smartform but I want to preview PDF file in SAP instead of downloading on local drive so How can i do this?
    Regards,

Not quite sure what you mean by preview (the actual PDF or the smartform you created?), but here is a FM for displaying a PDF from where you can download file to local drive.

  • LiveCycle Designer 8.0 preview pdf issue

Is anyone having a problem when creating a form, then using the preview pdf to check the layout? Everything is showing up, but you can't do anything, such as filling in fields, drop down the lists, check radio buttons, etc. If I save the file, then open it up in reader, everything works as it should.
    Mark

    Hello Mark,
It sounds like the PDF is rendered as a non-interactive form.
    1. Go to File | Form Properties.
    2. Click on the Defaults tab (could be Preview tab if using newer version of Designer).
    3. Set the Preview Type to Interactive Form.
    Does this resolve your problem?
