Preview prevents sleep

When Preview.app has been opened viewing a file, the system will no longer respond to pmset being executed.
I would expect the sytem to go to sleep, but the call is "delayed" indefinitely.
These errors keeps repeating themselves with an interval of 25 seconds:

Any one have an idea what I could do to prevent Preview from hanging?

I have a very similar problem on my G5 dual 2GHz ... I tried some stuff, but have no real idea what it could come from.
I do not have an airport card installed, so my problem seems not related to airport.
In the beginnig I suspected a hardware problem, but I do not have real arguements for or against it.
Could you solve the problem???

MacBook Pro won't sleep automatically - no process preventing sleep according to pmset. What's going on?

i noticed the following problem with my MBP 8,1 running 10.7.2 — automatic sleep just doesn’t happen. Since I usually put my Macbook to sleep manually before leaving the desk etc. I just noticed this issue and can’t really pinpoint it to specific updates.
Closing the lid works, selecting “sleep” from the Apple menu works. The only way to put my MBP to sleep automatically is currently PleaseSleep, which works fine.

Prevent sleep when close display?

I am using an external monitor. How do I prevent my MacBook Pro from sleeping when I close the display?
I do not use an external dock.
Is there a reputable external dock?

I also need a quick, non-hardware way to accomplish this.
It seems it should be (at it's most complicated) an option accessible through Terminal or System Prefs, but it appears that it's not.
It really should be built into the OS, to auto-recognize that the OS is running on a laptop, give the option to the user (through system prefs, to have a one-click switch icon in the menu bar, to cause "No-Sleep on Lid Close", when activated.
I would call this function "Brooklyn" as in No Sleep til Brooklyn. It should also add the ability chose whether or not the screen comes on, and/or the computer wakes, upon opening the screen.
The track-pad mouse-button should also come default set to menu-click (right-click) when there is a finger on the trackpad, but this should be built into the OS, and it should be a preference setting. Otherwise, they really need to add a seperate button. Menu-clicking is just to useful.

Windows 8 does not go to sleep - how to identify the device/app preventing sleep

I have a quite new Windows 8 Pro installation upgraded from Windows 7, but as a clean install. It is running on a Asus K53E laptop bought almost a year ago but I ran into a problem with going to standby mode. The laptop successfully dims the display and
then turns it off at the set time but it never reaches the sleep mode.
I followed the steps from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976877 but to no avail. The command
Powercfg - devicequery wake_armed shows only keyboard and mouse but I don't suspect the mouse as it is Microsoft Wireless Mouse and I turn it off before trying to induce sleep. I have made sure to turn off iTunes media sharing and Windows Media
Player Network Sharing service. The drivers are from Microsoft or the newest I could get from Asus.
The command
Powercfg -energy showed some errors - mostly with USB devices/hubs and with one of the system drivers:

I rather suspect some incompatible driver but to press Asus support for some update I would need to know what to blame. I reviewed system logs in Event Viewer but can't find any useful entries around the time when the computer should go to sleep, but there
are so many logs that I might have missed the right one. So my question is if somebody could introduce me to a tool that would help to pinpoint the problem.
I see the subject is quite ubiquitous for Windows 7 so I would be grateful to anyone who could suggest any options other than mentioned above.

Not sure why that would be but - you could add some error-checking logic to the script to test whether srvnet has successfully started, and then if it hasn't - attempt to restart it again. I haven't tested this code because I haven't had that issue, but something

Prevent Sleep When Lid Closed on PowerBook

I hate to limit this question to only 12-inch PowerBooks since it is common to all Mac laptops, but since that is what I own, I'll put it here.
Basically, the title sums it up. I've seen some other similar questions on the forum but none have been answered with a satisfactory answer for me. It seems I have two options:
1) Connect display, mouse, and keyboard -- I've tried this and it works, but this isn't the solution I'm looking for.
2) Install some application, I forget the name but it has a red light bulb as an app-icon ... tried that and didn't like it and didn't get it to really work.
So ... here's what I'd like to do. When I close the lid on my powerbook, I'd like the display to turn off and nothing else. The network, audio, and disk drive, as well as everything else, stays active.
If I want the system to sleep, I will choose the sleep option from the menu and close the lid. Simple as that.
It is hard for me to believe that the closing of the lid *must force* a sleep, there has to be something that can be done to prevent it, right?

Time machine preventing sleep in OS X Lion

Since installing OS X Lion (10.7.3), my iMac (3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB RAM) refuses to go to sleep. I have tried the solution suggested in other discussions, ie. to type pmset -g assertions into Terminal. On doing this, I get the message:

This appears to confirm that Time Machine (or my Time Capsule - 1st Generation) is preventing the system sleeping but I can't see how to change this.
Does anyone have any ideas for solving the problem?

I solved the problem myself in the end by dragging Time Machine preferences from /Library/Preferences to the trash and deleting. Time Machine created a new preferences file and everything is fine now.

Prevent sleep mode with mbp 2011

how do I prevent my mbp 2011 to get into sleep mode when closing the lid.
I tried insomniaX, Caffein and lullaby but non of them worked!

What do you guys suggest for settings on the sleep mode, I've just got a new MBP and it goes dark quick when using off battery, slightly longer off mains, barely a minute or what seems like. Do you leave at factory settings or ??
I'm still at a loss with the calibrating instructions?
The battery time left changes every minute so never have any idea how much power/time is left?
This calibration method, after leaving for 2 hours in the green fully charged, when you unplug it do you have to leave it on till it turns itself off in one hit, overnight, or can you turn it off and just use it till it dies without charging it the next day when it runs down to 0%?
And what does this actually mean? You can only fully charge it twice a week? For my business use it will need charging every day

OS X Server v10.8 prevents sleep mode (standby/suspend)

Like many other people in this community I am trying to enable sleep mode for my iMac 27" (late 2009) to save costs while it is not being used. Sleep mode worked fine on Mac OS X Snow Leopard and the iMac would go into sleep (a.k.a standby) whenver it wasn't used. Thanks to Wake-On-Lan (WOL) I was still able to server website etc.
I just upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion and because I like the idea of using the iMac as Web Server and Time Machine Server (using an external USB HD attached to the iMac), I bought and installed OS X Server v10.8.
Unfortunately, as many other people also have reported, the iMac no longer goes to sleep. I have configured it to go to sleep after 10 minutes, but all it does is turn off its display, but the computer is still running.

First of all, just want to say that I'm a "me too" person. I've been working hard on this for many hours until I finally read a thread about the pmset command.
That's where I found out that, like you, HTTPD on my Mountain Lion Server was preventing my Macbook Pro from sleeping.
Strangely enough, turning off the Web services in Server.app does not remove this entry. However, the "sudo apachectl stop" command did the trick. Thanks torbus_us!
Actually, the only reason I installed Server.app was that I needed the web server for my web development work. I'm starting to regret the decision of upgration from 10.7 to 10.8...
Since I'm only using Server for httpd, would you recommend uninstalling ML Server and installing Apache as a start-alone service? Any thoughs?

Prevent sleeping when streaming from iTunes to Apple TV ...

Hi,
Streaming to the Apple TV from iTunes does not reset the system's idle time, so it does not prevent the computer from falling asleep in the middle of a movie presentation. Monitoring iTunes CPU usage with an AppleScript handler does not work either ... the CPU usage is not amplified when iTunes is streaming to the Apple TV ... gosh !!
I created a not so perfect work around. I use Caffeine that resets the computer's idle time. Being a manual intervention, it is not a perfect. I am still looking for a better one, in order to prevent these 2 problems:
(1) I would like to find a way (shell script ???) to detect iTunes/Apple TV's streaming activity automaticaly: this way I could monitor the computer's idle time; not requiring the manual intervention of activating Caffeine is basic ... you realize the importance of this when the streaming stops in the middle of a projection and when you have to go in the den to awake your computer because you forgot to activate Caffeine; it is more frustrating, if you forget that repeatedly;
(2) while streaming to the Apple TV, the screen saver should be activated without allowing the sleep process.
These 2 could easely be done by reseting the system's idle time when streaming. It should be a standard iTunes/Apple TV features, nor requiring any work around.
Well ... hoping this will help to bring a more perfect solution.

Preventing Sleep /w Clamshell closed.

I close the laptop and the computer sleeps. Any suggestions / scripts / programs in preventing this?
I've used a program called insomnia a while back, and it worked. But the makers removed it from their website (probably for a reason). And I'm missing it. Badly.
I need this because I have my laptop on while I sleep donating processing power to researchers who need any little help they can get.
But waiting like an 10 minutes before the computer would let me undim in the morning is rediculous when your a student that needs that extra bit of sleep.
Plus a 1" server is kickass.

PowerBook6,4 Mac OS X (10.4.6) It's missing the F12 key.

I recently found a way to do this using "hardware". The way that sleep is triggered from closing the lid is by a magnetic switch. On my 15" Aluminum PowerBook, the switch is located under the trackpad, centered left to right but towards the back of the trackpad. It is easy to locate the "G-spot" on the PowerBook by using a magnet, like a fridge magnet, and passing it over the vicintiy of the palm rest and (most likely) trackpad and you will at some point trip the sleep sensor. Anyway, once you locate it, here is how you defeat it...
There is a magnet located opposite to the sensor behind the notebook's screen. If you place a small piece of flat steel sheet over the magnetic switch, which in my case means over the rear of the trackpad, when you close the lid the mag switch will be shielded from the magnet by the steel and the PB will stay awake.
Be sure and cover the steel sheet with a cloth, or use tape or something, to prevent it from abrading against the screen. I certainly wouldn't endorse transporting the PB with the steel plate sandwitched in there. But if you were just leaving it out on a desk and not moving it, it's a pretty good method to use if you need to leave your PB running with the lid closed. And it avoids installing software.
As far as recommended sources for common household items that could be substituted for a steel plate, I have tried the following:
A flat washer: Didn't work. It was a pretty big washer. Maybe the hole in it prevented it from effectively trapping the flux lines from the magnet. Not sure.
A razor blade: The razor blade worked. I wrapped it carefully with two or three layers of masking tape for obvioius reasons.
An Altoid Mints tin: I took a tin snip and performed surgery on the lid. I cut it into a shape that fits exactly into the recess of the whole trackpad. I also covered it with duct tape. This works well, too. It is now my final solution.
I have always used a RadTech ScreensavRZ cloth inserted between my keyboard and screen and it all fits together nicely with the Altoid lid in place over the trackpad. As previously stated, I don't endorse the idea of transporting a PowerBook in this manner over any great distance while it is running. However, if I am in the middle of performing a wireless download and want to move to another room in the house or upstairs, I wouldn't be squeemish about using the solution I have come up with to transport the PowerBook, lid closed, over a short distance like that.

Preventing SLEEP when using External Monitor and Keyboard

Prior to Leopard, whenever I had an external monitor and keyboard attached and closed the MacbookPro lid the system would not go into SLEEP mode. Now it does.
What's to be done to prevent this from happening?

PS.... when this last occurred, the backup drive for Time Machine disconneted when SLEEP was invoke by closing the lid and did not reconnect when the system restarted.
I also received a 'warning' that a device was not disconnected properly.

Does Time Machine prevent sleep?

Surely, if I have time machine set to say 1hrs 15 mins it will never sleep because of the Time Machine hourly backups?
I have a brand new iMac and although it it set to sleep it never does and I think that is due to TM running every hour...
Just as my machine is about to nod off TM starts another backup.

Well, in theory. I'm not really sure what TM does if, for example, the computer is asleep prior to the time of the next backup. TM may not wake up the computer and simply skip over the backup until the computer is awake whenever a scheduled backup comes up. But TM should not abort if the computer's sleep time arises during a backup. It should keep the computer awake until the backup finishes. This should be how any backup utility should work, but then you never know for sure until you test them. For me I would want to test any backup utility's behavior under circumstances that might compromise the backups insofar as I depend on the backup utility's reliability to produce usable backups without my having to be constantly in attendance.
I've tried TM several times since Leopard's release, and in general do not consider it a reliable backup alternative. I have had varied results with backups and restores, particularly with restores. TM seems to backup OK, but I haven't had any success doing a complete system restore. I'm also concerned by the many trouble reports appearing on these forums. There are just too many problems reported for me to consider TM truly reliable. However, that said there are a lot of users who seem to have no problems with TM. I guess I just sort of think a backup utility should really be bullet-proof because it's so important.

Airport prevents sleep

I have a powermac G5 1.8ghz machine which will not sleep when using Airport networking. When I try to make tha machine sleep, the screen go dark for a moment, the hard drive seems to spin down and then within seconds, the fans all cycle on and the screen comes on again. If I shut Airport off, the machine will sleep normally. I am running Tiger 10.4.2 with latest Airport Software (v4.2 at this time). The machine is connecting to an Airport express BS which is linked via WDS to an Airport Extreme basestation. Both basestations running latest firmware (v6.2 and v5.6 respectively). Have tried deleting preference files for energy saving management, bluetooth, etc. Hope this will not require a reinstall of the operating system. Any suggestions out there? Help please.
Update: now the system will not sleep even with airport off. I have tried repairing permissions, resetting PRAM.

I have a very similar problem on my G5 dual 2GHz ... I tried some stuff, but have no real idea what it could come from.
I do not have an airport card installed, so my problem seems not related to airport.
In the beginnig I suspected a hardware problem, but I do not have real arguements for or against it.
Could you solve the problem???

New mouse prevents sleep

Macbook pro 10.6.8    I am old, and just detest using the track pad. So I buy a cheap mouse and it's just fine. It's been fine this way for a long time.
Well the old mouse died, bought a new one, usb, and suddenly the computer will not stay in sleep mode. I put it to sleep, and immediately it wakes up.
Now I've been reading all the many topics about this and almost all bring up a laundry list of things to check.   Already checked. It's the mouse.
If I unplug it, and use the blasted track pad to put the computer to sleep, it's fine.   So I think we can rule out software issues, file sharing issues, blue tooth issues, settings or anything else.   In fact, the only sharing going on, is my kid plugged in a separate monitor since the screen on this one is dying. But that's been fine so far with the old mouse.
What I want to know,
What is it about this particular mouse, and is it fixable? Or do I simply have one more little obstacle to deal with now?   (Not to mention, if I walk away the thing will not automatically go to sleep.)
GEES it took me longer to figure out where and how to actually post this than it did to compose the question!
WHY does apple make things so danged difficult?   I use forums all the time.   This one is a pain.

Some ideas:
Is your mouse bluetooth? I guess not since you said it was USB, but there's this - maybe it applies to your cheap USB mouse too:

Your mouse may be putting the MBP in "clamshell" mode:

It may simply be the mouse. I haven't heard you say you tried a different one yet. Can you?
