Preview, Preview, Preview!

I can't find much here already so I'm posting as a new topic. Preview in SL is bust!
First, viewing pdfs created with Adobe CS4 suite is a disaster. Colours show up as grey, rotated text doesn't show at all. Anyone know any fixes for this?
Second, printing some pdfs produced on Windows machines (on my Lexmark C530dn) produces documents with graphic elements showing but all text is omitted. (This was a problem introduced in Leopard and not yet fixed in SL).
If you are having the same troubles or know of any fixes I'd love to know so that we can get Apple to get this fixed.
Many thanks
James

Well, I just started using 10.6.1 and Preview and so far, I don't like it. The moved the highlight button to the bottom of the page and made it smaller so that it's a bit harder to land on. In addition, in the old preview, you could choose ANY color you wanted for shading, in this version, all I see are about 8 selections of colors. I need many colors, heck I had 3 shades of yellow in use.
I also don't like the search function.

  • Oil Paint Feature Request:  Preview / No Preview Capability

A feature notably absent from the Oil Paint filter is any way to temporarily disable the effect (e.g., not preview it).
I happen to like using Oil Paint to make refllections in the surface of water smoother and more "liquid" (which involves turning off the "Shine"), and it would really be nice if I could easily gauge the amount of the effect easily by blinking back and forth between original and processed image with a quick "disable preview" functionality.
With most standard filters, one can either uncheck a [ ] Preview box, and/or click the mouse button down on the image to temporarily show what the image is like without the effect.
Yes, I know I can turn the Stylization down to 0.1 and see how a very minimal amount of the effect can be  applied.  And I can look at the original image in Photoshop proper, but of course that can't be zoomed while the Oil Paint filter is active.
Also, the zooming / panning seems kind of stiffly implemented.
In summary, the more or less standard and expected filter features I'd like to see added to this (new class of) GPU-accelerated filters are:
Preview/No Preview capability.  It doesn't have to update Photoshop, just the preview display in the filter itself.  I suggest a [  ] Preview checkbox and/or an on-mouse-click temporary effect disable.
Modal click and drag Zooming vs. Panning - i.e., based on a Zoom or Pan function selected (e.g., via an icon along the left) vs. having to hold modifier keys down.  I personally would want it set to Zoom by default, not Pan.  Since the filter has scroll bars (a Good Thing), I would have thought Zoom would have been a better default as it is.
I have implemented these things in my own GPU-accelerated plug-ins, so I know that all the infrastructure Adobe needs to support them is already in there.  These changes are controls only and should be trivial to implement.
P.S., There may be well-meaning folks amongst you who will want to suggest I post this over on Photoshop.com.  Not going to happen.  That forum is even more irritating than this one, and frankly I want little to do with it.  I think the concept of public voting on features is ridiculous.  If Adobe sees this here and chooses to consider it, fine.  If not, fine.

TRUE!  I have long been critical of Adobe's reluctance to revisit older parts of their software and bring them up to date, so as a result we users have to live with a hodge-podge of variations on the UI - and also more importantly in functionality.  Why, for example, doesn't someone think it's important to fund development to bring all the older artistic filters up to date so they work on 16 bit data?  There really is an obvious downside to Adobe having no competition.  The product has gotten damned sloppy as a result.  For example, an engineer developing a new feature can pick and choose from any number of other features already in existence (however outdated) and make the new one work the same way, claiming compatibility with something already there, and thus "good enough".

  • How to open report.pdf file? getting error message file cannot be previewed pdf preview handler

how can I open a report.pdf file that shows error: file cannot be previewed because of an error w/ pdf preview handler

    Hi pfmercerville,
If you are running the 64-bit version of Windows 7 (or Vista), you will find that your PDF files do not preview in Windows Explorer as they do in the 32-bit versions. Instead, all you see is a message stating that This file can’t be previewed. To enable this functionality on your 64-bit operating system, follow these steps.
    1. Click the Orb (Start Button).
    2. Go to the Search programs and files textbox and input regedit.
    3. Select regedit.exe from the results.
    4. When the UAC prompt appears, click the Yes button.
    5. In the left pane of the Registry Editor, go to (and select):

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\CLSID\{DC6EFB56-9CFA-464D-8880-44885D7DC193}
    6. In the right pane, locate AppID.
    7. Change AppID value to {534A1E02-D58F-44f0-B58B-36CBED287C7C}.
    8. Restart your computer for the change to take affect.

  • Not all my pages are displaying in Preview or Preview on Web

I have 6 pages with a slideshow on each. Each slideshow has 4-12 images. Each image is around 150-200KB. I also had additional pages with images of a similar size. When I try to preview in web, the pages are not all loading.

There is no error displayed, simply long spinning time as it switches to that page.

  • Standard Preview Size/Preview Quality

This may be a silly question, but in Library mode, under Edit>Catalogue Settings>File Handling, you have options under Preview Cache for 'Standard Preview Size' (1024/1440/1680/2048/2880 pixels) and Preview Quality (High/Medium/Low)... but what do these settings actually do; I've tried changing them & not noticed and difference??

    Les_Cornwell wrote:
    Thanks again Rob
    You bet .
    Les_Cornwell wrote:
I've tried all the different size options, namely 1024 through to 2880 & low/Medium/high and none make any obvious difference at all.
So are previews only created as required when you view a picture in full screen mode or does LR create a preview for all your files?
Every image you look at in Library module comes from the (library) previews, there are up to 8 possible jpegs:
    * a tiny thumbnail in root-pixels.db
    * up to 7 jpegs ranging from small to 1:1 in the "preview pyramid" (each smaller is half the dimensions of it's bigger sibling).
Try this with a 10 photo test catalog:
If you have a big monitor and set standard preview size to 1024, then (with Lr closed) delete all previews, then restart Lr and wait for all the "..." indicators to be extinguished (indicating standard previews have been built), then step from photo to photo in loupe view with all panels collapsed (loupe view "real-estate" maximized), you should see "loading" indicator, since it needs a bigger preview than you've got built. What it will do then is build 1:1 previews and all the smaller ones along with it, which is suboptimal from a performance point of view. If you try and zoom in to 1:1 after the "loading", there will be no additional loading, since 1:1 previews were already built.
Then, repeat the test with preview size at max - no loading indicators, right? (when stepping in loupe view after standard previews have finished being built, I mean). Except now if you try to zoom in there will be "loading", since 1:1 preview were not required to display the loupe view, they will need to be built for the zoomed (1:1) view.
The only difference between big enough and too big will be an ever-so-slightly greater lag when stepping in the loupe view and no 1:1 preview exists (when preview is too big I mean), since it's loading a bigger standard preview than is actually needed. Reminder: if preview is not big enough, there will be an ever-so-slightly bigger lag when stepping in loupe view too (e.g. vs. just big enough), since it's using the 1:1 preview instead of standard (which wasn't big enough). So, tester beware... (somewhat counter-intuitively, in some cases, it will be faster loading a preview when settings are, in general, too big, because it can get away with loading the next size down, which is an even better fit, e.g. if image is cropped just so - all of these little nuances make it especially tricky to test & evaluate, so consider doing initial tests using uniform-size uncropped images, to reduce the number of variables - it's confusing enough as it is ;-}).
Note: as previously mentioned, there is considerable complexity (and bugs) in the preview system, and I may not have described it perfectly, so it wouldn't surprise me if your results were not exactly like that, but I just went and retested on my system, and what happened is exactly as I described above (win7/64), as I read it anyway...
Regarding quality, you should see difference in some photos not others, but ONLY if it didn't resort to the 1:1 preview which may be higher quality than the standard and is independent of the standard quality setting. (I think somebody may have stated that you'd need to zoom in to see differences in standard preview quality settings, but that is wrong - the only way to see differences in standard preview quality settings is if you are in fact viewing standard previews, which you aren't when zoomed in to 1:1, and anyway it can be ellusive - see paragraphs above...).
PS - If you want to compare jpeg quality of standard previews, one way is to export them using PreviewExporter. Again, it's tricky, since you need to assure you aren't exporting a scaled down version of the 1:1 instead of a true standard preview. After exporting you can compare outside Lightroom, so you don't have the "preview of a preview" issue going... I use Beyond Compare by Scooter Software for doing objective comparison of like-sized jpegs, but you can compare subjectively using any ol' viewer, e.g. as built into OS.
    Too much?

    Les_Cornwell wrote:

No - they are created on an as-needed basis (thus the reason we hear many complaints about how stale or non-existent previews should be built in the background, to minimize "loading" in library module, e.g. after making dev changes to a large bunch), but note: standard previews may be considered "needed" when thumbnail is in view in grid or filmstrip (but not considered needed if thumbnail is off-screen, even if existing in filmstrip and/or grid).

  • Finder Preview - Postscript Preview Icon

In KDE 3.4.2 on Suse Linux 10, I get automatic previews of postscript image files (.eps) without any problems as Konqueror creates icons, larger hover-mouse-instant-preview images together with file specs, and fully integrated file browser previews.
Nothing like that in Finder, or Pathfinder.
Does anyone know of a trick how to activate .eps / .ps - preview in OS X Finder? Is this a coming-up feature in OS X 10.4.6 or maybe 10.5?

On my computer, these EPS files are listed as documents to the "Preview.app" application.
These files are created using IDL, which can write computed output directly into EPS files (very good print output; very fast file generation). They contain one very rough thumbnail preview picture, although I'm not entirely sure what format options of enclosed OS X Finder would recognize. That little preview bitmap is recognized and used by Open Office 2 for on-screen display, while the postscript is sent to the printer.
Under Linux, Konqueror is not relying on the very small bitmap preview image; Konqueror displays a re-rasterized postscript, in a very good quality, as icon, as pop-up-preview when hovering the cursor of the file, and as large window preview when clicked. OS X Finder lets me preview .jpg or .gif, but not to these .eps files.
    Here is an example:
    home.tiscalinet.ch/swisswuff/idl_demo.eps
    Thank you very much.

  • No preview or preview button appears when I try to print a web page, as it does for any other file. How can I arrange for preview?

n the dialog box that appears when I try to print any web page, there is neither a preview nor a preview button, (although there is a preview if I open the web item as a pdf file, but that takes an extra step. A preview appears when I print any other file on my computer (a Macbook). Is there a setup procedure that will give a preview when printing one or several web pages?

The Print button in the "3-bar" Firefox menu button drop-down list opens the Print Preview window.
You can click the Print button in the Print Preview window or use the Print item in the File menu (File > Print) or use the Ctrl+P shortcut to have access to the print selection item and other print setup options.
    * Tap the Alt key or press F10 to show the Menu bar.
    * Use "View > Toolbars > [X] Menu Bar" to have the menu bar visible permanently.

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Might possible that DCOM permission got changed and to verify that you can check following steps.
Go to start, then run. Type dcomcnfg and push o.k. Component Services should come up.
Expand Component Services, click on Computers, then "Right click" on My Computer and go to "properties".
Click on Default Properties tab, and make sure the following is set:
Default Authentication Level: Should say Connect, not "None"
And Default Impersonation Level: SHould say Identify.
When those are set properly, hit ok and turn on your protected mode back on your Office applications.
In addition to this, please check whether you find any information from event log for this case. Also try to add Builtin users to grant read, write and execute persmission.
    Hope it helps!

  • Problems with display of preview - and Adobe's tech support.

    Hello, all.
After quite a bit of struggle I am still experiencing problems with the way Bridge CS5 displays previews. Previews are displayed with rather low quality. By that I mean low resolution that causes images to appear pixelated and out of focus. I've tried every possible setting in Bridge (or at least I think I have) but nothing seems to work. The setting that forces Previews to be built to the specific monitor size of the computer used doesn't work for me as I spend equal amounts of time working between my Macbook Pro 17" and my Apple 30" cinema display that have different resolutions. I've tried this setting and the preview images created on the notebook would not display at all on the 30" display.
I have contacted support only to find it is nearly non-existent. A voice obviously from someone located in India answered and kept asking what I considered to be basic questions and must have used the word "apologize" at least 20 to 30 times (no exageration) during the 1 hour and 43 minutes we were on the phone to accomplish nothing other than to "register" my complaint.
What is happening to Adobe ? This is not a joke, a rumor or an angry comment but rather a serious question from a user who has built a professional workflow based on the use of Adobe's products. I have been an user of the Adobe Creative Suite since its very first version and of the individual applications even before then. Bridge is one of the applications I use the most in my workflow that involves the organization of my large database of medical images I keep from my treatments and research. So this is very serious to me. I am now on the phone with Adobe waiting again to speak with someone in technical support. I was told the average waiting time would take between 35 and 50 minutes and I didn't think it would be possible but so far I have been on hold waiting for 1 hour and 7 minutes and someone has yet to answer the phone. What is happening with Adobe ? Is the company about to go out of business ? The last time I remember experiencing such a lack of support from a company I did so when contacting Polaroid and we all know what happened to it.
To make matters worse I have twice contacted Adobe and asked their technical support agent to remove a phone number that they seem to have mistakenly written as a contact number in my files. More than one month after I registered my support request I finally received an e-mail stating that had tried to contact me at the phone that isn't mine and shouldn't be a part of my records despite the fact I have instructed them twice to remove. There are serious legal implications here as I am bound to confidentiality when it comes to the medical information I manage with my Adobe applications and the idea that someone in technical support may accidentally share this information with a stranger while calling the wrong number is a serious problem.
    What is going on ?
Outside of this forum I have no idea who to contact and if it is even worthwhile doing so as it may prove to be a huge waste of time.
Bridge has been a problem application since its inception. In fact the only version of Bridge that seemed to have worked (somewhat) right out of the box was the first one. I have experienced problems with Bridge with every single new version. Previews that don't display properly, crashes, folder hierarchy indicators not displaying properly, and others. The same images display fine if I open them in Apple's OS X Preview or Photoshop CS5. The problem is restricted to Bridge. All images are RAW high-quality images from a professional Canon EOS 1Ds MK II camera with a 17 megapixel full size sensor, and they always look stunning on everything else.
What is one to do ???
Sorry about the long post but I am one frustrated user who doesn't know what else to do.
    Thanks,
    Joe

    Hi again, Steve.
    In answer to your questions:
    > What view are you using for the Slideshow (centered, fit screen, fill screen, 100%)?
    Centered.
    > What is the slide duration set to in Slide Show Options, does changing it to manual help?
I have it always set to manual.
    > What are you're Preferences> Advanced> settings for 'Software Rendering' and 'Monitor Previews' (checked or unchecked)?
I've tried both choices for both options. My usual default options are 'Software Rendering' unchecked as I have a new Macbook Pro (only a few months old) and the graphics card is powerful enough to handle the previews and 'Monitor Previews'  also unchecked.
    > What are you're Preferences> Cache settings for Options (Keep 100%..., Automatically Export...)?
' Keep 100% Previews in Cache ' option - checked
' Automatically Export Cache to Folders When Possible ' option - unchecked
    > What resolutions do you have set for both the 17" MBP and 30" ACD?
    Their native resolutions: 1920 x 1200 for the MBP 17" built-in display and 2560 x 1600 for the 30" cinema display.
    > In the Mac System Prefs.> Energy Saver... do you have the Automatic graphics switching checked off ?
No. I have this option checked for both Battery and Power Adapter.
On Bridge's interface upper right hand corner I have also selected using one of its pull down menus the following options:
    ' Always High Quality ' and ' Generate 100% Previews '
    Any ideas ???
    Thanks,
    Joe

  • Slow and choppy preview in CS6

    Hello!
I'm using After Effects to edit and things to my footage. I've found that it's pretty slow and preview is quite choppy. Also, RAM usage grows as I preview more, 4fps/24fps. In the end, the RAM usage is max, approximately 10Gb. I stop my preview but the RAM usage stays up. So, my question is, is the reason why my preview is slow and choppy, Cache is too small or too slow so the program loads the pieces to RAM, then slowly writes them Cache? I'm using 2 x Samsung F3 7200rpm 1TB drives in RAID0 for cache, previews and sometimes I render small pieces of video that. I think that the RAID0 -system is slightly too slow for cache. But there's a problem. Windows shows that HDD usage for my RAID0 is 0-2%. So, is it that my processor is too weak, footage disk is too slow (5400rpm 2TB), Cache too slow, wrong settings or something else? I've been thinking to breaking the RAID0 and replacing the cache disk with SSD. Would that help? And I would use one of those F3s to my "footage disks".
I'm using GeForce 660TI with After Effects and I don't find that it gives a lot more performance. I don't see any performance differences even when I've enable AE to use my GPU. So, is there some settings wrong?
RAM preview is as fast as normal, no speed gains, and still, no real time. Sometimes, when I RAM preview the footage and then preview it, as normal, it would play it in real time with audio (if selected) but sometimes when the RAM preview is done, it won't do that. It just "loses" the preview footage and it's like RAM preview didn't do anything.
And I want to make sure: Blue bar - from Cache, Green bar - previewed footage.
    My HDD settings:
    - 2 x Samsung F3 1TB RAID0 - Media Cache, Disk Cache, some of the footage (no performance differences if the footage is in this drive or other drive), Audio Previews, Video Previews ( mostly Premiere Pro ), Rendered files
    - 1 x Samsung F3 1TB - Boot drive, no footage, no files, just After Effects in it.
    - 1 x Samsung F4EG 2TB (5400rpm) - Pictures and footage.
    My PC (excluding drives)
    - Intel i7-870 (HT on)
    - 16GB RAM 1333MHz
    - Asus GeForce 660 TI
    - Windows 7 Home Edition 64bit.
If you could help me, I would be very thankful!
    Kind Regards
    Apollo

    Well, project info:
    1920 x 1080, 24fps, HDTV 1080 24 Preset.
One clip filmed with Nikon D800 (1080p@24), 16 seconds long
Added two shapes (very thin lines), one text, one  "Solid Layer" for vignetting, and then Nul for tracker which is for the lines and text.
All the Effects are in the videoclip: Sharpen, Levels, Broadcast Colors, SA Color Finesse 3, Unsharp Mask
I've used Numpad 0 almost all the time for preview. But is the space bar preview for previewing AFTER numpad 0 RAM-preview, because the RAM preview makes the green line over the composition. But if the most of the preview is done by NumPad 0, what's the meaning of the space button -preview in the After Effects when it seems to be a wrong way to preview.
Is there any way to improve this preview? More RAM, faster CPU?

You might want to try clobbering the Captivate settings file. For Captivate 3 on a Windows XP PC you would look in the following location:
    X:\Documents and Settings\XX\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Captivate
    X = Drive letter
XX = Logged in user name
In this location (Which you may need to coax Windows into allowing you to see) you should find a file named captivate_v30.dat. Just Close Captivate and delete this file. Then restart Captivate. Captivate should bake you up a fresh one on the spot. And it may correct the issue.
To my knowledge this is the closest you can get to a fresh install without actually reinstalling.
It would really be way cool if we had a secret key combination that could be issued while Captivate was in the process of starting up that would accomplish this. Either that, or an option we could choose in the application itself. If you feel as I do, please consider requesting it via the Wish Form!
    Cheers... Rick
