Preview Problems, Opens partially off screen

Hello, when I open some files in preview (but not all), It loads the window partially (1/3rd) off the screen. Can someone help me assure it always loads fully on screen?
If I move it, then close and reopen, it still opens partially off screen.
This is not a problem for all files I open in preview.
I have not yet installed 10.5.7.
Thanks!

There is a possibility that Preview's preferences have become corrupt. You may need to trash them and recreate them. To do this:
1. Navigate to ~/Library/Preferences. ~ signifies your home folder
2. The preference file you'll want to trash is com.apple.preview.plist
3. Open preview and a new preference file will be created. Open one of the files you were having issues with and see if the window still opens with part of it off of the screen. If it opens like it is supposed to, try a few other files to verify. If all looks good, then you should be good to go. If not, then post back and we'll figure out something else.

Both can be viewed by doing "About this Mac" from your Apple menu. THe model can be roughly determined from the information about your processor:

  • HT2506 Preview always opens with full screen. Can I change this preference?

Is there an option to have Preview NOT open each image in full screen mode?

I've noticed the same thing. What I do is open Ps and manually expand the window frame to the largest extent possible on a single monitor. (it's not truly full screen but close enough.) If I then close Ps or bring Lightroom to the front the "maximal" state will be maintained when Ps is brought to the front again. I do not click the Maximize icon since Ps never sticks in that state when interacting with Lightroom.
I should also point out that I use two monitors so your results may be different if you use only one monitor.

  • Connected to 2 monitors, but Preview opens partly off-screen when opened

I thought I would take another run at this. There are two other posts like this but neither has an answer. One is dated Mar 23, 2010 and the other is dated Apr 8, 2010. As with the other questions, I have two monitors and the preview application displays PDF's half on display 1 and half on display 2. PNG's are displayed entirely on display 2. Display 1 used DVI and display 2 uses VGA. The Preview application in 10.4 didn't have this problem. So here is the real question... How do you set the default position property for the preview application?
    TIA

I am having the same issue. Were you able to find a way so you can set a default monitor? I'm using a TV as a third monitor and it always goes straight to that screen. However, it only happens when I first open a PDF in Preview. After that, it always opens every other one on my main screen. It's a real drag when I have to turn on the TV just to see a PDF.
Do anyone have a solution? The only solution I have found so far is to move the TV monitor in the "Arrangement" setting over to the side (it's normally on top of the other two in the middle), which makes it really inconvenient for when I do use that monitor.

  • Ical alarms still opening off screen

Are other people still having problems with Ical alarms opening up off screen After the 10.4.9 update?
Why would Apple say that it is finally fixed in their descriptions when it is Not?
I wonder who at Apple tests these things and how they get their results?

Add me to the list. I'm still getting my alerts almost completely off screen. As a software tester by trade, I'm a bit insulted that Apple would say it was fixed when it quite clearly is not.

  • Safari Opens Off Screen

I have imac with an attached monitor.  Whenever I open Safari it opens on the attachec monitor and not imac and so far right that only a portion of the bookmark window is visible.  Have tried to move it and search settings but constantly opens almost off screen.  Is there a setting I am missing that can fix this.  It's even worse if a small ad window pops up as it's completely off screen with no way to recover except to start safari over again.
    Thanks,
    Matt

I still haven't found a solution to this.

  • Preview app opens outside screen border

Hi, The Preview App opens outside the screen border.
    Can't grab it with cursor.
    What to do?

    Hi BDAqua, No luck still.
Used the detect display option in display prefs and all seemed solved.
Connecting the second monitor again and 'voila', all looked ok.
I use the second display only when editing in Final Cut as a main video screen.
When I want to use only one monitor for a while the Preview App keeps opening halfway the not in use and disconnected second display.
So I think I'll just hit the detect display button the rest of my life.
    Things could be much worse...

  • How can I force an image to open fully on screen within action?

In PS CS5 when I open an image with height dimension in range of 1405-1411 or 1873-1882, the image opens half off the bottom of the screen.  Width does opt seem to matter.
I assume this is a bug, but until fixed I am trying to work around.
For manual editing the vertical fit screen button or zooming out causes the image to come on screen, but is neither of these display options will record in an action.
When an image is opened half off screen, a Place command does not place accurately for these images.  Thus an action that includes a Place does not run correctly for these images.
So either I want to find a setting (nothing in preferences that I can find) to force the image to open on screen, or find a command that will run in an action that causes image to come on screen, while not interefering with images that open normally.

The insert menu item command, which I had overlooked (perhaps because it is grayed out to virtual invisibility until action is actively recording), solved the problem.
    Thanks.
FYI I had tried all the screen mode options.  Made no difference.
Also FYI a screenshot.  A little less than 1/2 of the image is off screen

  • 'Installing OS X' window off screen

Hi all, I've started the upgrade to Mavericks from 10.7.5. After my laptop rebooted it got to the 'Installing OS X' (translated from Czech) screen. The window is however partially off screen so I can't see the bottom of it (no progress bar or buttons). I am not sure if I can just wait for it to complete or if there is some other step necessary such as clicking an OK button which I can't see.
Does anyone remember what happens next or how long this should take?
    Thanks a lot!

My iPhone 5 having a problem that I can open my lock screen but I cannot slide open my phone even Slide to power off too, It just cannot slide.

    Hello MarvanCheong,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Troubleshooting touchscreen response
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1827
    Restart your device
Hold the On/Off button until "slide to power off" appears. Slide to power off your device. When it is off, press the On/Off button to turn it back on.
If you can't restart your device, reset it by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for a least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
Clean the screen with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth.
Avoid using the device while wearing gloves, with wet hands, or immediately after applying hand lotion.
If you have a protective case, or if you are using a plastic sheet or film on the display, try removing them and testing the device without it.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • Windows move off screen when new app is opened

I have a user running 10.8.5. The user opens an application like Firefox or Safari. As soon as they open another application like Microsoft Word the browser or other application will shift off the screen. The finder is allowing only one window to show up on the screen at one time. I reset all keyboard shortcuts. Checked Mission Control, Launcher and couldn't find anything that would make this happen. They only have one display connected. I removed all the Office plist files and launched as a first time launch. I still can't find what is making the windows disappear or move off screen.
I logged on as a different user and the problem went away. So it has to be something in their profile that is causing this. Any ideas?

In OS X 10.6 and prior, Expose' and Spaces had a separate System Preference setting, along with hot corners. One of the options was to force apps to open in a new space.
That changed to become Mission Control with OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. I haven't really used the feature in 10.8. I can't quickly find a useful Apple link, so I'll provide this 3rd-party 'Dummies book' link which might help you sort things out. Mouse and trackpad preferences also can be set to enable gestures that work in conjunction with Mission Control.

  • SQL Management Studio -- Windows open off-screen!

I used to have three monitors hooked up to this computer, now I only have two. Most applications don't have any problem with this, except SQL Management Studio which keeps opening windows off the right-hand side of the screen which are impossible to move back on-screen! All I can do is right-click the window in the taskbar, then choose "maximize" to temporarily work with the window. (I don't want the window maximized, but that's the only way to make it visible!) Import/Export data wizard window does this, as does the "add new users to DB" window.
How do I reset window locations in SQL Management Studio? This is getting extremely annoying. And please, please fix this bug! It's the year 2007, your program should be able to cope with multiple monitors! (Imagine how many laptop users who hot-swap monitors all the time are running into this.)
    Thanks in advance.

Microsoft has looked into the bug, and in fact, we've done a lot of work on the mulitple monitor support in SQL Server 2008, as I mentioned in my post. You should see an improvement there.

Your last reply on this thread was telling me that, and I quote: "SSMS has no notion of monitors - it just uses whatever Windows says are there. If you will remove the monitor from the video card settings then SSMS will not show the screens on something that does not exist." Which is incorrect, as my screenshot in the next post proved. Normally when people make a claim, and it's refuted, they respond in some fashion.
The annoyance is that it took a full year (and an irate post from me) for you to respond to that screenshot, and it still seems like you're unclear about the issue. It has nothing at all to do with "I can't move my screen around". Let's review the repro instructions one more time:
    1) Start with a computer running Windows XP Pro and three monitors plugged in, arranged in a horizontal line. The center monitor is the default.
    2) Open SSMS. Maximize it in the left-most monitor.
    3) In the Object Browser, select a database, expand "Security", expand "Users", then right-click in the list and select "New User"
    4) Move the New User window to the right-most monitor and maximize it.
    5) Close SSMS, then re-open it and bring up the New User window again. Notice that SSMS saves the window position so that it continues to open on the right-most monitor. (This is good!)
    6) Now unplug the right-most monitor and restart the computer. Go to the Monitors property sheet to ensure that there are only two monitors listed, and that the right-most (of the two) is still the default monitor.
    7) Open SSMS, then bring up the New User window once more. Notice that the New User window now opens off-screen.
The irony is that this bug doesn't even apply to me anymore as, after about 6 months, I got my third monitor back. But for those 6 months, I was getting this behavior MANY TIMES A DAY, driving me completely and utterly furious and crazy each time, because it's such a stupid and moronic and easy-to-fix bug. I don't understand how your QA process could possibly have missed windows opening off-screen.
(Like you suggested, if SSMS actually ensured that windows opened on monitors that actually exist, this whole thing would be a non-issue.)
I don't know what you mean by "can't move my screen around," as this has nothing to do with moving or repositioning screens. It has to do with a window that opens off-screen, so that it's impossible to use the window without doing one of the ugly hacks outlined in this thread.
I'm glad SQL Server 2008 has "lots of work on multiple monitor support" and I'd be extremely happy if it did what you <i>claimed</i> SSMS 2005 did a year ago.
Sorry for the tone. It's so upsetting to me that bugs related to multi-monitor support could exist in a product in use in 2005, after a full decade of Windows supporting multiple-monitors. Isn't this stuff perfected by now? Doesn't Microsoft have any kind of minimal quality control process, and why isn't this on it? It's hard to express how frustrating this is, both the bug and the lack of response to it.

  • Save/Open Window Goes Off Screen Bug

There's this one particular bug I've been having ever since I upgraded from OS X Maverick to Yosemite. Whenever I open/save a file, whether it's on the web browser or Finder, the open/save window goes off screen. I can still see the window but the bottom portion where you normally have the open, save, new folder and cancel buttons - is all the way at the bottom of the screen.
I can't scale it to its proper size because the window is buried beneath the Docks. The only way to rescale it is to click the arrow key button near the Save As drop down list but sometimes, this button is not there.
Does anyone else have this problem? Any idea how to fix it?

    Hello Steve:
It definitely sounds like the hot corner "all windows" is enabled. There is a preference file that needs to be trashed, but I cannot figure out which one (no help to you).
Be sure that none of the hot corners are enabled and then restart.
You might also try resetting PRAM (although I do not think that will do anything).
