Preview PSD file icons

I just switched fom CS4 to CS5 and now my PSD files no longer show me a preview of the images. I know it has nothing to do with the versions because I have saved CS5 PSDs and the icons still do not show the actual image, just the standard PS icon. How can I set CS5 to show me the actual image of the PSD file on the icon instead of a standard PS icon?

Change all instances of the Photoshop version to whatever you're using, i.e., "Photoshop.Image.9" becomes "Photoshop.Image.11" if you are using CS4.
Save as Install.reg, right click and choose Merge. Make sure you have the psicon.dll where it's supposed to be. Google for this info if you don't have the icon already in place.
Is this a hack? Depends on your definition. Photoshop used to do this whenever you installed a version prior to CS.
Of course, the usual disclaimers and warnings apply: May cause data and or hair loss. May contribute to swollen hemorrhoids, painful rectal itch and erectile dysfunction. Do not let children play with the reg file without supervision. Consult a doctor immediately if monkeys fly out of your butt.
OK, seriously now, data loss is the real concern. Most folks never had the problem but some did and that's why Adobe scuttled the icon thing.

  • PSD File Icons don't display in Windows 8.1?

PSD File Icons don't display in Windows 8.1. How to fix?

You would have to buy a third party codec for thumbnail displays that Windows doesn't support.
    Ardfry Imaging, LLC
So why should you have to pay?
I have many years ago tried to get Microsoft to implement thumbnail support to no avail.
So in the end, Ardfrey's codec takes care of it for $20, free upgrades and I can get on with any work that requires thumbnails at the OS level.

  • CS3 Bridge gone, so how can I preview PSD files

I've lost Bridge, it not longer opens and there fore I've no easy way to preview my PSD files on my hard drive.  Can anyone suggest a way to do it without having to open each individual file in PS.
    Thanks.
    Judy

Thanks for replying Curt - Bridge suddenly wouldn't open - Windows says "there is an error.....".  I saw a previous post suggesting resetting the preferences by holding down the Ctrl key but that didn't do anything at all!  I'm currently uninstalling CS3 and components and reinstalling - hopefully this will work!
    Thanks again.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended file icon.

Whenever I save a .PSD file, the file icon is a white background with the Photoshop program icon on it, instead of the default blue photoshop file or .PSD file icon. Please tell me how I can fix this. Is this a bug or do I have to change something in the settings? I really want the original Photoshop CS6 File icon. Please help.

You can change the file icon by editing your file associations under Extras --> Folder Options --> File associations. Select the Photoshop image file type, change the icon. Just be aware that depending on your folder view options, Windows may still display an alternate icon at times e.g. in file dialogs...

  • How can I access the thumbnail/preview image of a PSD file?

Hey guys I'm trying to salvage some work from a corrupted PSD file via the thumbnail. What happened was I saved my work and closed photoshop and hit the reset button on my PC afterwards by mistake (i dont see why this caused a problem because the program was fully closed at the time). When I open the file now it says it uses an unsupported blending mode, if i press ok I get an error saying incompatible PS version, if I press flatten it says unexpected end of file was encountered. Ive tried PSD repair tools and searched the net for solutions and there doesnt seem to be any - Ive pretty much given up on trying to repair the original file.
The thing is, the thumbnail of the file seems to be intact because I can still see it as the file icon. I wanted to know if there was any way i can access this thumbnail image so i can enlarge it. Any help would be very appreciated!!

I have an idea to try...  Earlier I mentioned the Windows Picture Viewer...  Normally that won't read PSD files, but I'm used to using that to look into PSD files because at one point I bought the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack.
Something to try, and it won't cost anything:
    1.  Try downloading and installing the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack from here:  http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/
    2.  Once it's installed you get a free trial period, so you can try opening your PSD file by right-clicking on it and choosing Preview.
If that fails, here's another thing to try:
Open the Bridge component of Photoshop and navigate to the folder in which you have the file.  It may be able to make a larger thumbnail than the one you're seeing.
Other than that, are you saying you're seeing the thumbnail in Windows Explorer?  If that's the case, what happens if you right-click in the white space near the file and choose View - Extra Large Icons?

  • QuickView, Preview.. etc. Can't Display PSD files

I've been having this problem for some time now - as far back as can remember with OS X.
When I try to view a psd file, (prior to Lep) in Preview or Xee, all I get is the transparent Alpha Channel - ie usually a solid blank neutral gray or checker board white and gray.  And as of Leopard (and Snow Leo), this situation now includes Quickview.  I get no actual image, or sometimes part of an image displayed, but never the full image that is displayed in PS or PSE.
The ONLY exceptions to this problem I have found is an ancient app called ACDSee v1.6.9 (2001) and Quicktime Player.  Both display psd files perfectly.
The preferences to save Image Previews: Always Save, Icon, Full Size, Mac Thumbnail, Windows Thumbnail.
Am I saving psd files wrong somehow so that the default system apps can not display psd files properly?
BTW - this problem is completely consistent on EVERY system I have tried it on regardless of the OS X version (Tiger, Leo, Snow Leo) and Photoshop version (PSE 2, 4, 5, 6; PS 7, CS1, CS2).
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  This is a very irritating problem..
    TIA

This isn't an issue or something you are doing incorrectly, PSD is an Adobe format that is not widely supported.  You need to open it within your Adobe application, such as Photoshop.

  • Previews in Bridge & Vista -- can't compare .psd files because...

Vista won't show me a preview and Bridge only opens with one window.
It's important for me to clean out my backup by making sure that I have the most recent graphic file stored (I have multiple copies of files backed up at different times). I can't do this easily because I can't see .psd previews in Vista, and I can only open Bridge once. Therefore, I can't compare files that are in different locations & on different hard drives next to each other. Does anyone have a solution for this? (btw, I don't think Bridge is that hot of a program -- it's not very flexible and all it does is crash.)
    Camille

Thanks to all for your suggestions. I reduced Bridge to compact mode & could then open multiple windows. I spent all morning cleaning & organizing my drives! I have a few more questions, though:
    1. When you're looking at the folders in Bridge, all you see is a blank folder. It doesn't show a graphic of what's inside the folder the way that Vista does. Is there a way to get Bridge to do that?
    2. When you're looking at folders in Vista, most graphic file formats generate a view of the image. But if the folder has Photoshop files in it, all you see is a .psd icon. I'm assuming there is no way to generate a view of a .psd file in Vista. But, even when I'm in Photoshop and doing something basic, such as opening a file, I don't get a view of the image (only an icon) unless I actually click on the file, then a view appears in the dialog box. I don't understand why the .psd files don't generate images in the program itself. I thought it might be a setting in my hardware that's not turned on, because this just doesn't make sense to me.
    Thank you.

  • Psd file does not show preview in Creative Cloud Assets Activity Tab

I've tried to share a psd file however the preview will not show up in creative cloud assets under the activity tab. It only shows a blank page icon. Although, you can view the file in the extract tab. However, this is a problem because I need to be able to share the file with the client to be able to view and comment on it, and be able to switch between past and current versions. Right now they are not able to do that.  I am using Libraries as well and have smart objects placed from my Library.

Please try the workaround posted here:

  • PSD file previews in Creative Cloud

When I view some of my Photoshop files in Creative Cloud, the file is represented as a generic file icon, not an image preview of the file. Not all of my PSD files do this and I can't figure out why. Has anyone seen this and found a fix?

Any file that can be "viewed" on the web can also be downloaded - officially or unofficially. That's just how browsers work and a fundamental principle of all things web. If you don't want that, you have to generate extra files for "viewing" at reduced quality and with watermarks or protect your files with proper encryption.

  • Psd previews in File Browser Windows XP

It is sad that such software doesn´t exist... But I remember when I had Photoshop 7 the previews were automatic, how come in the CS versions it isn´t possible?
My friend has just told me about the shell extension and he said it works fine. Why Adobe says that it may lead to data loss? I mean how can an extension lead to data loss? I sounds pretty scary... But on the other hand the previews would be helpful... Is there any article about this matter?
You are right that Photoshop 7 PSD files were visible as proper thumbnails.
Then the data loss problem occurred. This was attributed to a file called psicon.dll.
It never happened to me but there were definitely reported cases of it.
The file was removed from later versions of PS but along with it went the ability to view PSD files as thumbnails.
People have been complaining ever since and it seems to boil down to an incompatibility between Windows and Photoshop.
The fix to get a copy of psicon.dll and put it back in the system works, but then you run the risk of losing data again.
Since Bridge CS4 is so much improved over previous versions I now us it for browsing images.
    But it's still very annoying!

  • Problem with Preview and PSD files - random gray square

Hi guys, hope you can help...
I've got a problem with Preview and PSD files.
If I open in Preview both an original jpg straight from my reflex and the photoshop version of the same picture, the psd file presents a gray square (of what it seems unrendered image) in a random area of the photo (sometimes in the center.). The square is quite big...
If I zoom in or zoom out it disappears...if I scroll to another photo and then back to the psd, the square it's there again...sometimes in a different position.
I've tried the same psd on my older iMac with leopard...and got no problem at all.
I suspect it got something to do with my Ati...
(this is the second iMac 27...the first went back for gray banding on the lcd screen and flickering and yellow tinge........)
    Thanks for your help.
    DAve.

    maybe I'm onto something...
I've just found out that opening Preview in 32bit mode (instead of default 64bit) works flawlessly with any psd files. If I switch back to 64bit mode, Preview is much faster but the gray square comes back...
It seems like the i7 is much faster than the Ati....
    Any more realistic ideas?

  • Acrobat Pro 9 - Disable thumbnail preview in PDF file icons on Desktop

After upgrading to Acrobat Pro 9, the file icons of PDF files on my Windows 7  desktop changed to showing a thumbnail preview. I want to get the standard PDF file icon back for all PDF files. Can someone please tell me how?
    Thanks.

Did you ever find an answer for this??? I had the same issue and was searching for an answer. I saw this and since I fixed mine I thought I would tell you what I did. Also, in case someone else finds this and needs an answer.
Opened Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options
    Go to the View tab
Check "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
    Hit Apply
All your PDF files on your desktop should now show with the generic PDF icon.
Reverse this to get the preview icon "thumbnails".

  • Can't Get Past Preview Unavailable for a PSD File

I know that Lightroom is unable to generate previews for PSD files if they haven't been saved with the Maximize Compatibility option. But, it seems that once you begin a preview for a folder Lightroom gets stuck in that mode even if you then go ahead and resave the file with the Maximize Compatibility option set to Always.
In a test just now I opened one of the problem files in Photoshop CS6 and saved it. Then I went back to Lightroom and tried to reimport the file but it still said Preview Unavailable. I tried toggling on/off a couple of layers and resaving but it still didn't help. So, next I actually tried making a change to the file and resaving. That still didn't work. I've tried exiting from the Import dialog in LR and restarting the import and even restarting Lightroom but nothing makes a difference.
If I save a new copy of the file in Photoshop (without changing any settings in my Photoshop preferences) Lightroom is able to show a preview and import the copy. So, the file itself is fine. In fact, it's just a simple 1MB file with a background layer and a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.
I've found this same behavior with both LR 4 and LR 5 Beta.
I have a lot of PSD files that I've edited over the years in Photoshop. Now, I'm considering using Lightroom but if I have to create new copies of every one of my PSD files in order to see them in Lightroom I don't know if it's going to be worth the trouble. Is there any workaround?

TIFFs will hold everything that PSDs do.
That's nice to hear. However, I found that the Image Processor conversion doesn't work correctly in some cases. Here's one example. I have a file with a single image layer and which is a Smart Object. I applied a Blur Gallery Iris Blur to this object as a Smart Filter. After running the Image Processor what I got was a flattened file with no Smart Object and no blur filter. The filter effect was rasterized so it wasn't lost but the ability to edit further was.
And it gets worse. I have another file with a single Smart Object layer and a Nik Software Color Efex Pro filter applied. In this case, not only did it flatten the file, it didn't even render the effect correctly.
I played around with my preferences thinking that my Maximize Compatibility or TIFF layer-save options might be causing the problem. But, so far, I haven't been able to get the Image Processor to work correctly.
However, if I do the conversion manually I end up with a TIFF file that includes the Smart Object with Smart Filter intact. If I want to use these files with Lightroom I guess I'll have to convert each one manually.

  • Creation of previews/thumbnails of PSD files not working in v3.0.1

I'm using Aperture 3.0.1, PS 4 to edit photographs.
My workflow will be the usual, Photo > Edit with Adobe PS, in my Aperture browser thumbnails/previews will be created for the PS file.
When I save my work in PS, the thumbnails and previews in Aperture are not being updated properly, show horizontal magenta/cyan lines, noise, clearly some of the layers are not being processed, some layers are not being resized to the right preview format, it's a complete mess.
I tried to delete/update previews, no difference.
It's an absolute shame, this worked perfectly in Aperture 2.1 and is absolutely necessary in my workflow. I'm seriously thinking to go back to 2.1.
Anyone with suggestions to get this working? Thanks

Having some similar problems and unfortunately some different ones as well...
I would love to know any tips you might have in identifying the "faulty" PSD files that Aperture 3 cannot deal with or more like the the PSD files that FAULTY Aperture cannot deal with (they worked fine in 2.1.4, Preview, iPhoto, etc).
I ask because the problem I have is that as soon as I hit one file that never finishes generating a thumbnail for, then I am done since everything else just queues up behind it and I can't diagnose anything else. As I said in an earlier post, HOW HARD CAN IT BE TO INCLUDE USEFUL DIAGNOSTIC INFO IN THE "ACTIVITY WINDOW", so that we could tell which images are being "processed" (or more importantly not being processed).
