Preview screwing up fonts in pre-existing document

Preview is wreaking havoc with pdf documents by substituting fonts and deleting characters from the beginnings of occasional lines. This substitution takes place on saving a file after collecting together, or removing, unwanted pages.
The pdf files are all from other machines -- some created by me, most from various authors and publishers -- and all have embedded fonts that display without problems at first. Almost none of these fonts are installed where this problem occurs so this issue may differ from the other font problem threads.
On the other hand, maybe it has the same root cause because Acrobat Pro is now complaining about some files too, sometimes that it cannot extract the font, and replaces body and footnote characters with periods. Somehow the large characters survive with 'only' a typeface change.
Typically it will be the headers and a few bits of the footnotes affected. All in the same typeface, and often substituted into something like Univers bold but with the same spacing as the original font, making it not just unpresentable but also illegible.
Is there perhaps a save or font encoding preference that needs to be re-set?
These files opened and edited just fine not long ago, in both Preview and Acrobat Pro.

Exactly the same thing has just started happening to me, in the last two days. Except the files are not all from other machines.
I just spent 4 hours doing an archive and install on the system. Reinstalling what I thought were damaged fonts. Then removing and reinstalling Acrobat. And even removing Suitcase, which can do random odd things from time to time.
After all the detective work... it seems the problem is with Acrobat. But I don't have a solution for you. I'm tearing my hair out. Can't create invoices for clients!!

  • Adding Footnotes in a pre-existing document (Word 2010)

I have a document that was already typed and cited.  All of the citations are in footnote format.  In addition, the document is divided into sections, and the footnotes restart at each new section.
Now for my dilemma:  When I go into the document and make changes, then try to add a footnote for those changes, it is almost as if the previous footnotes didn't exist (at least not as footnotes anyway).  For example: if I make a change to the
section 1 of the document between footnotes 3 and 4, then add a new footnote, it would be assumed that the new one would be inserted between 3 and 4, it would become #4, and that the rest of the footnotes after that insertion would go up by one.  What
is happening instead, is that it does insert itself between 3 and 4, but it labels itself as #1.  Moving forward in the document, pretend that the next change I make is in section 2, between section 2's footnotes 5 and 6.  Again, it would be safe
to assume that the new footnote should be the new number 6, and all the rest in the section would bump up by one.  Instead, it inserts itself between 5 and 6, but becomes #2 (since #1 was in my example back in section 1) instead.
Is there anyway to make it conform to the prescribed footnote numbers that are already in the document?!?  Help!  Thanks!

Are you sure they're: (a) footnotes and not endnotes; and (b) not ordinary text that just happens to look like footnotes (as will be the case for documents saved from a PDF)?
For (a), assuming the footnotes have been corrupted, see:
    http://www.msofficeforums.com/word-vba/16610-repair-two-interspersed-endnote-numbering-schemes.html
Note that you'll need to temporarily convert the footnotes to endnotes to use the macro there.
    For (b), see:

  • How can I type in a different font color in existing document without the color changing back to black?

I am editting a document and want to type in red. However, the font color keeps changing back to black once I am done with the section, or when I scroll down.
I do not want to use "comment" function.
Could anyone tell me how to set a font color without changing?
    Thank you

When you place the cursor in a block of text, it adopts the style attributes of the surrounding text; most of the time, for most users, this is the desired behavior.
It sounds like you want to use change tracking, which displays your additions to the text in a contrasting color, until you choose to accept (or reject) the changes. It might be worth looking into that.
If, as I read your question, you want to be able to place the cursor into various places in the text and type text that is really styled in a different color, I can think of two options that might help a little with that.
You can set a Character Style for the alternate color, and apply that after inserting the cursor, before typing. If you want, the Character Style can be assigned a keyboard shortcut.
You could also copy a single character with the desired font color to the clipboard and then after inserting the cursor, Paste and Delete (⌘V,⌫), which will allow you to continue to type in your preferred color. Of course, this only works if you don't need the clipboard for anything else.

  • Inserting an image as a header in pre-existing documents...

    Hi all!
Firstly hello, as this is my first post... hoping someone can help!
I've been tasked with rebranding all our company's course materials to reflect our new logo. Most of the materials were created in a Word template, with the logo added as a header on each page. These were then converted to pdfs and combined into packs using Acrobat.
What I'd like to do is replace the company logo in each of the pdf packs (most of which are 2-300 pages) without having to go back into Word and reconvert everything. This could easily be done by creating a graphic with a white background and pasting it over the top of the old one - is there an easy way to do this for all pages simultaneously within Acrobat Pro? I'm running version 9 btw.
    Many thanks...

Making the changes in Word is really the best option. If you've added interactive elements in Acrobat that you want to preserve, you can simply replaced the old pages with the new and links, bookmarks, buttons, media, etc. will be retained.
An alternative is to add a watermark in Acrobat. Set it so that it is placed on top of the other page contents. The new logo will then hide the old, but it won't replace it. More info is in Acrobats help doc.

  • How to embed fonts in an existing pdf document

PDF Documents I am creating and emailing to my clients are showing up missing bargraps and text. I suspect embedding is not working. Is it possible or even needed to embed fonts in an existing pdf document? Or, is that done during pdf creation? -MikeT

You'd want embedded fonts with your PDFs so as to assure fidelity of your content.
If my local machine does not have the font used in the PDF what I view may be / can be something "off" from what you mastered.
Perhaps squares instead of language characters.
Distiller job options such as High Quality Print or Press Quality embed fonts (Standard does not).
For a PDF that does not have embedded fonts a Preflight Fixup can be used to embed fonts (even one for hidden text from Searchable Image or Searchable Image (Exact) OCR output).
Need Acrobat 9 Pro or Pro Extended.
The fonts must be on the local machine and "known" to the OS.
The fonts must have no license restriction(s) that preclude embedding.
    Be well...

  • Illustrator & Indesign CC (Windows) crashes when trying to open an new/existing document

I installed Illusrator & Indesign CC when they were released as I had a pre-existing Adobe CC account which I had previously downloaded Photoshop and Indesign CS6 with. When I try to use Indesign & Illustrator CC they both crash when you go to open a new / existing document. I also downloaded Photoshop CC and this works fine. I have phoned Adobe 6 times to try to resolve the issue, each time I wait on hold for an hour and they get told they will call back within 2-5 hours but this never happens.
Has anyone else had this issue since installing CC and found a way to resolve it?

  • How do I stop Pages from reformatting my existing documents?

If I open an existing document, created in Pages (pre-update version) it now reformats my documents with new fonts, inserts bullet point tables and generally takes a perfectly good document and makes a hash of it. Does anyone know how to go back to the old version of Pages or stop this version from ruining my documents & causing time wasting reformatting back to what I created? BTW this is on my iMac which is running the latest version of Maverick & the latest version of Pages. On my Macbook Pro whilst the system shows I did update Pages to version 5 it hasn't actually done that so I'm lucky I can still see my documents as I intended. Most of the documents involve recipes which have lists of ingredients & methods but DON'T NEED BULLETS!

In the Australian App Store it is within a whisker of "I hate it" reaching 70% of users.
    "I hate it + don't like it" = 80%

  • Preview is missing fonts??

    Hi all.
Sometimes when I open a document in Preview, I get a message like "this document needs such-and-such a font, since it is missing it may not display correctly."
Sometimes I don't get that message, but I see distorted graphics instead of text in areas where (I assume) fonts are missing.
Is there a way to find and install missing fonts?

You could then try to reinstall Preview from the OS X disks. Download Pacifist. Put your OS X install disk in the drive and click the button in Pacifist to "Open Apple Install Disks". Once it's done reading it, or them in, find the Preview application by expanding the folders presented. You are of course looking for the one in the Applications folder.
Highlight the Preview app and click on the Install button at the upper left. Pacifist will extract, verify and install Preview, replacing the old copy on the hard drive. Eject the OS X disk.
Keep Pacifist open and do the same with the 10.5.4 Combo update file. If there's an update to Preview, you'll need to install that, too. It will also appear as Preview.app. When you click the Install button in Pacifist, it will tell you that Preview already exists and give you multiple choices. You want to click the "Update" button.
You can of course get to the same point by performing an Archive and Install, but this will take far less time and only replace the one application.

  • Using airport time capsule to create an internet connected network from pre existing wifi network

i bought an airport time capsule for college. I bought it to create a network for my dorm room so that I could take the pre existing wifi from the school and make my own mini network that I can hook my other stuff up to. Problem is that I don't have an ethernet hook up in my room so the network would have to be created from a wifi network rather that a ethernet hook up. Is this still possible? Alternate suggestions? I am afraid of either the college network blocking users from communication with other devices via the wifi, or the fact that my printer would be on a huge network for all to screw with.

    Is this still possible?
NO, it won't work. Apple only works with apple.
    Alternate suggestions?
I am sure your college has rules about not running your own wifi networks.. but anyway.. that is up to you.. the Apple TC cannot turn off 2.4ghz which would be handy.. so the only way to do this following the rules is ethernet. You can run a full network standalone on ethernet. And still use wireless for internet.
If you want to use wireless standalone this is also possible but you need to connect a second wifi USB dongle your Mac so you can have two networks at once.. You can use an express to connect to the college wireless and bridge that to the TC by ethernet.. then use the TC to create your own network.. since you cannot turn off 2.4ghz I guess how long the College IT people take to track you down should be hours. If you could just use 5ghz it would probably be ok.

  • Prompting to save as new document when trying to save over existing document

I'm hoping someone here can help me. I'm having a problem with saving changes to PDFs. If, for example, I sign or insert pages into a PDF and attempt to save those changes (mind you these are documents which I have already created and saved locally), I receive a warning that the document name is taken (which of course it is because I am trying to save changes to an existing document) and that I must select a new one in order to save. Essentially, I am being forced to Save As when all I want to do is Save. Does anyone have any idea why thsi might be happening?

Thank you very much for your responses. The final post on the forum at the link you provided explains the issue. It appears to be some sort of conflict with the Windows Explorer document previewer that is causing this. Whenever I am previewing the document I am working with in the Explorer, I cannot save changes. As soon as I preview a different document, the changes can be saved without any problems. In the interest of providing further information so that a more permanent solution can be found, I am running Windows 7 and have had this problem with Acrobat 9 and X. Files are being saved locally. Unfortunately, I do not have the savvy to tell you what kind of server.

  • [JS][CS4]List fonts used in the Document

    Hi to all scripting gurus,
I have this following script that returns a list of fonts used in the document:
    function fontused(){               var fontscoll = document.fonts;               for(var i = 0; i < fontscoll.length; i++){                       var font = fontscoll[i];                       alert(font.name);                } }
The above is working OK my problem is that it also list the fonts used in the placed illustrator files (.eps). Is there some kind of parameter or something that i can use so that it only list the fonts used in the text?

    Doesn't time fly?
This will give you the idea, if when you find more exceptions add them in a likewise manner.
The "if" statements check that tables, headers, etc. exists otherwise an error will be throw.

P.s. I had planned on updating the script after David highlighted the problem, just didn't get round to it.

  • Embedding fonts in an existing pdf that does not have the fonts embedded

    Hi,
I have an existing pdf that fails to open on my ereader.
So I opened in acrobat x pro to see what might be the cause.
Selecting "file"--> "properties" -->"font" ( fonts used in this document) I can see that this pdf uses multiple windows trueType fonts and that none of them are embedded in the pdf document.
Now my ereader is linux bases, so I am guessing this might be a problem.
Being an ereader I didn' give me much to go on.
So i would like to embed all the fonts listed in this list into the pdf file and save it again with the fonts embedded.
I went to "file"-->"save as optimized pdf" -->"font"
But there both lists embedded and unembedded fonts are empty.
Why is this and how can I embed the fonts shown in the document properties into the pdf?
They seem standard windows fonts like e.g.  ArialNarrow

I just looked a bit furder and actually checked wether the fonts existed and found the following:
    I am using windows vista.
The fonts mentioned in the properties of the pdf actually exist in the windows installed fonts but
in windows they are no longer TrueType but OpenType.
So I am guessing this might be the reason they are not in the list of unembedded fonts in the optimizer window.
Is there an easy way to say to acrobat to replace one font ( not found on this computer) with another font that does exist and also to embed that font in the pdf document?

  • Particular font for entire pdf document

Can i set a particular font for entire pdf document while designing pdf forms in LiveCycle Designer ES?
    How can i do it?

Each object has its own settings for font. You can set the object to the font that you want and then drag it back onto the palette. It will ask you to overwrite the current one. As you drag the object back into the drawing area the new font will be used. This is true aof all properties of the object and not just font.
This is useful if you are creating a new form, but if one already exists then the easiest way is to open the XML source (right mouse click on the Design tab and choose XML source. Use the search facility to find all occurances of typeface and chnage each one to the font that you want. Save the XML and then all objects will have the same font.
Make sure that you make a backup of th eform before you play with the XML. There is no undo once the cahnges are committed.

  • Existing document opens blank in CS5

I have existing documents created in CS5 that when opened now, open as 'blank' pages. They export fine and look the way they should. I see all of the elements in the links & layers palettes. I can see the frames of the various elements on the 'blank' pages, yet I only see 'blank' white pages that are useless for any work purposes. I was able to open these documents perfectly 2 days ago and there have been no software changes other than adding some fonts.

Just occurred to me to re-boot the computer to see if that would make a difference. It did. Both documents that had been giving me problems opened correctly with everything visible.
I'd still like to know why this has happened. Thanks in advance for any insight anyone might have.
