Preview selection tools missing

First off, I'm not sure if this is the right place for a Preview question. I can't find Preview support anywhere else. Under tiger in Preview, you could choose lasso or rectangle selection and then copy that section to the clipboard.
I can no longer do this under leopard. The selection button defaults to rectangle, but when something is selected, copied, and pasted, it pastes the entire PDF page.
The Preview help file says to stretch my window to see the different choices. I stretched it across 2 screens, and no change.
Any help is appreciated.

I've got the very same problem here. You can workaround this bug by copying the selection to OmniGraffle and recopy the selection with OmniGraffle.

I think this is a bug... and a severe one too! Copying selections from PDFs with preview was one of the killer features of OS X!

Preview "select" tool

Hello all.
The question I have is regarding using the select tool in preview.
When I open my image in preview, when I use the rectangular option in select, I copy it and then paste it in powerpoint or word and it's just fine. When I use the elliptical or even lasso option, when I do the copy and then paste, it comes into the application with black around the part of the image I selected so that it still forms a square.
I just want the area I selected...is there a way around this?

Have you looked to see if the outline color is set to black? By default my Word 08 doesn't add one at all, and it works fine, but check to see if it's different for you. Make sure you click on "no line". I hope this works.

Crazy selections with Preview "Select" tool.

I recently installed Lion OS and Adobe Acrobat X as default pdf viewer. Then I prefered Preview better and reset Preview to be the default pdf viewer. Now I cannot use the "Select" tool to copy-paste a piece of a pdf to Word--it copies a random part that matches the size but it is not my selection.
Any hints on how to solve this issue? I really need to copy pdf parts to Word.

Hi and thanks for prompt reply.
Deleting the preference file did work but only because it reset the app to the defaults.
For some reason I had View>PDF Display>Media Box selected (perhaps I selected it when I did not have a crop set so it appeared to do nothing).
If I choose View>PDF Display>Crop Box instead it shows the image cropped and so appears to have copied only the selection - but has still copied the full page and so the view can be reset back from the cropped extent to the full page even after saving the new document as it saves the full document and the crop info - this does not seem logical and may result in info that was not supposed to be sent to someone being visible - often I crop an image to send only the relevant part to someone.
The only way to force it to create a pdf that contains only the selected items is to print the cropped image to a pdf.
I suggest that when only part of the image is selected and copied to the clipboard Preview should create a new document that is the extent of cropped image only if rather than copying the entire page and also the crop info.

Group Selection tool missing from tools

My group selection is missing from my toolbar on the right and is replaced with position tool. Is there anyway of getting it back?

Yes I completely agree with Peter we don’t have "Group Selection" tool in ID. Still you are feeling something missing in your tools panel...? Just go to Windows menu > workspace >> Reset Panels. So you can get ID default all tools. I hope it will help you.

Preview Select Tool: Rest of the page "still there", hidden

Very regularly I use the select tool in Preview: I open a pdf page file1.pdf in Preview, use the select tool to select part of the page, and then copy it and create a new pdf from it (ctrl-c, ctrl-n) and save it to file2.pdf.
Today I discovered the following problem: Even though the new pdf file2.pdf looks like a cropped version of the original page, the original page "is still there". Usually it is invisible. But for example, if I open file2.pdf with Acrobat Professional, go to avanced -> print production -> crop page, then all of a sudden I get to see the whole original page of file1.pdf. However, when I just open file2.pdf with preview, or in the standard mode of acrobat, I just see the cropped part.
This is terrible, for two reasons:
* first, it means that confidential information that used to be in file1.pdf and seems to have disappeared in file2.pdf is still there and can be revealed by someone who knows how.
* it can create trouble with other applications, for example in latex (this is how I found the bug / feature in the first place).
So here are my questions:
* can I reveal in preview the "hidden parts"?
* is there any way to permanently delete these hidden parts?
* is there any way to ensure that they are not there at all if I use the select tool?
I'm using OS X 10.7.

Preview Selection Tool-How to get selection size in Preview?

One of my favorite tricks in Preview (prior to Leopard) was being able to hold the alt-key to get the selection size. Leopard killed this amazing feature and now I have to open Photoshop every time I want to get the size of something. Does anyone out the have any idea how to quickly get selection size in Preview in Leopard? I thought I would just be able to make a selection, crop the image and get the size that way, but worst of all, the image size only reflects the original image size and not the newly cropped size. The latter seems like a bug and the former is annoying.

I've been on Leopard for a year and I was always able to just put the cursor on the image, draw my box and hit the crop button. In the last week, I've lost the ability to draw my box. It's like it's been disabled. I've restarted to no avail. This was a great little feature as I do not want to load every picture into iPhoto.

Preview mode/Tools missing?

How do I turn off preview of hidden areas when dragging an image in frame with Direct Select Tool?

CS5, Not sure how to word this...
In previous version of ID, if I had a graphic in a frame, I could drag the image around inside that frame with the Direct Selection Tool. I can still do this with CS5 but it seems to want to show the entire image in a ghosting way that is outside of the frame. Is there a way to turn this preview type look off like it was in previous versions? I feel like its slowing my computer down bigtime because I am dealing with a large image. Everytime I click to drag it, everything slows to a crawl and unusable.

Hmmm, I wonder if that window is hidden or off screen? Have you moved the pic window around to look under it?

Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...

Why does the select tool stop working and images save with areas missing?

I have been working on an image using simple tools (only select, crop and scale) and no more than 4 layers.
The quick selection tool, magic wand tool and polygonal lasso tools are not selecting simple areas. They leave square sections unselected, and eventually I can't select anything on my canvas. The paint tool also does not work. I decided to save the image I had made even though it was unfinished, and upon reopening the file (a PSD) there were square transparent areas that were not there when I saved it (see image)
This is what I've tried:
I work on the layer selected
I have reset all the tool settings back to the default ones
I have reset the program preferences back to default settings
The Photoshop CC software is up to date
I have turned the program and my computer on and off again
Can someone please help?

Is the damage actual or only display (are the layers complete according to their previews in the Layers Panel)?
Does turning off »Use Graphics Processor« in the Performance Preferences and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?
What have you done for trouble-shooting so far? (Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved mis usually a good starting point):

Text selection tool is completely missing

Hallo,
I newly bought Adobe Acrobat XI. It's running on Windows 7. Unfortunately the text and graphic selection tool (the small arrow) is missing in the toolbar. It's not possible to select it to the toolbar - it doesn't appear anywhere. We installed Adobe on another PC (Win 7 as well) and the symbol appeared next to the free-hand tool.
Since the selection tool is quite important for me I'd be glad if somebody coul help me.

Are you talking about the Select Object tool, which is a small black left pointing arrow, or the Edit Text & Images tool, which looks like a pencil drawing on a piece of paper, or something else?

Missing direct selection tool

Hi! I'm using CS3. All of a sudden, my direct selection arrow is missing from my toolbar! I tried going to Window > Workspace > Default Workspace... and it still didn't come back. I don't know what I did to make it disappear... but I need it back! I also tried restarting. No luck. Thanks.

It could be hiding under the position tool. Try opt+clicking it to
toggle between the postion and direct selection tools.

Select tool in PDF editing - missing

Hi,
I use Adobe Acrobat 8 Profession.
The "select" tool has disappeared and unable to select object or text to edit.
With the select tool I could choose any object or text within a PDF document to edit, alter, replace or just remove.

Don't paste images into pagemaker, ever, always place them. If your pdf if acrobat 4 compatible you can place the pdf directly, but be prepared for document bloat.
Acrobat pro allows you to open individual images in Photoshop. You can also open pdfs in photoshop directly, but you have to guess at the resolution.
