Preview Sharing Question

I use Aperture for stills and FCP X for video.  When I want to add a still to a project in FCP X I use the photo browser.  It appears that only the master is available.
I have Preview Preferences set to share "Always" and the size set to match closely match monitor resoultion of 2560.  Quality is 11 if I recall.
I shot video with a flat picture style and the still from that canera are also flat, so they always need some post adjustments.  For the stills  I like to use Aperture, although the more I use FCP X,  the more I like the color correction there.
Is there something I am overlooking, or is that just the way it is?

You're recapitulation of your problem got me to thinking. Even though you've found a work around somthing still isn't right because  the second version should be in the media browser.
So this statment kicked my brain:
So if I uncheck this box, and only create another version when I want a comparison or some such thing,  then my version and the resulting preview, will be the image that I want to use.
The second version wouldn't be in the media browser if it didn't have a preview.  So if you select the project icon in the Library tab of the Inspector and then click the gear icon like so:
Is the Maintain Previews For All Projects checked?
Also in your preferences:
What is the state of the New projects automatically generate previews checkbox?
Finally to force Aperture to generate a preview for a version right click the version and select Update Preview.
Note when you do this you need to restart the program looking into the Aperture library via the media browser in order to update the media browser. So in this example you would need to restart mail.

    Hi there,
this is a Family Sharing question. After we upgraded to family sharing, and I now have a new apple id, I find that all the documents on my iPad in pages,  are only accessible if i sign in with the original apple id- now my husband's ( he is the primary account holder). Is there an easy way to migrate these documents to my iCloud account, or do i need to email them to myself . There are a couple of hundred documents.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Thankyou for the reply.
No. I have tried twice. When I turn off pages in the iCloud settings while logged into his account, then my documents in pages just are gone. They return when I turn it back on.
Is there another way I can save them to the device?

  • Home Sharing Question # 1001

I know there are a lot of Home Sharing questions but haven't found the answer to this.
My wife and I have been able to share movies and music but not apps. She is on a PC and I am on a Mac.Not sure if that would make a difference.

    No answers to this?

  • Home Sharing Questions

    Hello,
I have two questions regarding home sharing while I am on vacation. I understand that if I am not on the same network, I will not have access to my files on my iMac or my PC, however, I do have two questions:
    1. If my iMac and my iPad are signed into the same VPN, will home sharing work if I am on vacation? Both my iMac and my iPad will be signed on to the same server.
    2. I have Xfinity as my Internet provider, and they provide hotspots all over the country that are free for me to use. Since my iMac/PC are on thee Xfinity newtwork, if I sign into the Xfinity hotspot while, say in Maine and my equipment is in Florida, will home sharing work?
My fear is that I must be logged into the same network ID, and they will not be available to me. However, I do have two Network ID's (one is a 2.4Ghz and the other is a 5GHz and they have different names, and Home Sharing does work if my AppleTV is on one and the iMac/PC/iPad is on the other.
The same questions I guess will apply to my AppleTV device, however, if I can get access to my Home Sharing on my iPad, which along with my AppleTV device, I will be bringling with me, I can always change the airplay to play on the AppleTV from my iPad.
Even though I have a WIFI Seagate drive that I use as both a backup and storage for my photos (I am a professional photojournalist) I have all my iTunes files backed up on that device (good thing because if an artist pulls their work from iTunes and you store it Apple's Cloud, it will be deleted) and had I not had a backup, all the Celtic Woman concert videos (close to $60 worth) would be gone
Anyway. thanks for taking your time to read this and considered answering.

PS. These questions are important for me as I plan to spend 3 months every year traveling throughout the country doing street photography and travel photography as I also shoot stock for Getty Images, so if my movies and music are especially my Home Movies (I have instructional videos and PDF files in iBooks that I may need access to) are not going to be available, I would hate to drag my desktop with me. I will take my WIFI drive and use its player to play my music, as while I can change the directories on my iMac to point to the external drive, I do not know of a way to do this on my iPad.
If I get a travel trailer to use instead of staying in hotels, I may just bring my iMac with me. But I really would like to leave it save in my house.

The answer to both questions is no.
It only automatically syncs new purchases from the iTunes Store between devices, and even then only tracks purchased after the option has been turned on. It won't do a catch up sync to start with.
Non iTunes Store purchased tracks have to be imported manually.
You can view all the tracks that are in the source library but not in the target library.
Then select them all and hit the import button.
All that will do though is transfer the music, it will not move playlists, etc.

  • Personal File Sharing question

    Hi,
I have a question about personal file sharing between my iMac Intel (my work computer) and an eMac (student work computer). I work at a college, and our regular back-up system on campus is just not worthwhile, so as a secondary back-up, I created a new account on the eMac (the student computer). I have already successfully accessed the regular student account via personal file sharing (it shows up on the network under the office name given to the computer), but is there a way that I can also connect directly into my new account on the eMac? Is there something that I need to do to make the separate accounts visible?
    Thanks,
    Ken

I'll try to access this from a Windows PC from the internet first (then try with ubuntu)
That requires much more work, like finding Outside IP, Port Forwarding, etc., try it locally first.
    1) System Preferences>Sharing>Services tab>Windows Sharing.
    2) Browser won't get you to File Sharing, that would be for System Preferences>Sharing>Services tab>Personal Web Sharing.
    3) By default the Shared folder is shared, but you can log in as the Mac's User & see all that the Mac User can, or Sharepoints for smb...

  • Library Sharing question

    Hi
I am not even sure if this is possible
I have a desktop PC (Vista & iTunes 8) and all my music is on an external 250gb hd.
I have successfully managed to share this library with my laptop (again Vista & iTunes 8)over my wireless network. None of the music is actually on the hd of the laptop.
My question is , is it possible to edit the song info on the laptop?
    Regards
    Graeme

Yes. That itunes sharing feature lets folks in dorms & offices share music.
So, itunes is not going to let you edit somebody else's library. In this case the other library also belongs to you, but iTunes doesn't know that.
You have to make the changes on your desktop PC.

  • External preview monitor question

    Hello,
I'm trying to switch over to Premiere Pro CS5.5 for some of my future projects (coming from Sony Vegas 10) and I'm a little confused. I have a Black Magic intensity card and I am thinking about getting a Nvidea GTX 580 for the mercury playback.  My goal is to use dual PC monitors for working space and preview to a 42"  Panasonic Plasma HDTV.
Question: I have noticed that many of the GTX580 cards have an HDMI output. Would I want to use the HDMI output of the GTX580 to feed my Plasma or would I still use the Blackmagic card?  I got the impression from another thread that Black Magic intensity will slow my Premiere timeline down.  Also would the GTX580 HDMI output be as accurate as the BM Intesity card HDMI output?
    Many thanks,  Marc

    Hello Everyone,
I have a ATI Radeon HD 5870 and a NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 in my Mac Pro.  I using the NVIDIA for my two monitors and the ATI for my external monitor.  I'm using the HDMI connection to my 42'.  Everything was working fine until today.  I'm not sure why I can't select the external monitor anymore.  I've rebooted my Mac (still thinking like a PC user), but that didn't help at all.  Has anyone else noticed any changes as far as the external monitor goes?

  • Screen sharing questions

    Merry xmas everyone.
I have a few questions I hope you can answer.
I just discovered screen sharing between my mac mini and macbook laptop via a physical ethernet connection using a linksys router (no wifi).
I go to the finder and see the other computer and click share screen, and it shows up beutifully. But without asking for a user name and password. I tried logging in from a guest account and it then asked me for a user name and password. So just to make sure for my peace of mind, both machines have the exact same user name and password (and .mac account), so is that the reason they can both connect to each other easily without the need to verify.
Is this share screen even possible via wifi (using Finder and not ichat)? Or just via a hard line connection?
2nd... is there a way to share the audio between both machines? My overall goal is to connect to my main computer from my laptop from my night stand so I can listen to my podcast, and have them marked as listened to, so that I don't have to wrestled with keeping two podcast libraries on two different machines sync to my ipod... ugh.
plus i won't have to drop the extra cash on an ipod dock.
    Thanks
have a great new year everyone

    1. While screen sharing is it possible to drag a document from the remote screen to the computer you are using?
No, but if you use iChat as your screen sharing tool you can copy the file(s0 manually that way. In Finder you could also simply both screen share and mount the filesystem of the mac.
    2. Does screen sharing work over the internet (like web sharing)?
Not using the direct screen sharing abilities. But if the mac you're trying to control is set up to be accessed from the internet (with afp://) then you should be able to enter that address into the "New..." menu item window in the screen sharing application. The application is at: /System/Library/CoreServices.

  • Preview/Printer question

    Hey guys,
I don't know if this is the proper forum to ask this, but if ANYONE can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it!! This may sound like a petty thing to ask, but I am taking a class and the professor is expecting us to print almost 30 pages worth of slides for notes to bring to class. (I would handwrite them all down in my notebook but she goes over her lectures too darn fast for me to write every word down.)
SO my question is this: How do I change the color preference on Preview before printing?? Some of classmates in my class can print them on grayscale/black and white, assuming they are NOT Mac or Apple owners, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do this! It won't open w/ anything else, bc I thought if I could "trick" it to open on Pages or Keynote I can print in black and white to save ink. But it won't and this can't go on throughout the semester or else my printer ink will die soon!
    Any help/suggestions?
    Thanks!
PS. If I should post this elsewhere, let me know. I wasn't sure where to ask this question other than here since I have the Leopard on my computer right now.

Hi Luce, this is fine likely.
Depends on Printer & Drivers, but look for something like these in the Print Dialog...
Then op at Presets, choose Save As... B&W Only.

  • Preview rendering question

Hey all, Mike the newbie has more questions
I imported about 6k images into lightroom and I'm working on organizing them within the collections but my question previews. As I scroll through the library there is a delay in seeing the images as they seem to render realtime.  This seems to impact me more when the library has larger images and I'm scrolling down more.
I imported the images using the 1:1 previews, would going with standard preview produced a better performance result?
How about none?  I read the FAQ but it really doesn't address whether the rendering is altered by choosing this the different preview options.
My second question about previews is there any option to rebuild them, for instance say there is a speed bump with using the standard previews, can I delete the current ones and recreate/rebuild them somehow?

I imported the images using the 1:1 previews, would going with standard preview produced a better performance result?
    How about none?
That's strange. There might be some small performance penalty of having 1:1 previews over standard (since they are physically bigger), but it should be marginal. What is your machine specs?
My guess is either the machine is too slow or your expectations are too high (Lightroom is not speed daemon). Are your sure the previews have actually be built?
My second question about previews is there any option to rebuild them, for instance say there is a speed bump with using the standard previews, can I delete the current ones and recreate/rebuild them somehow?
Yes, you can discard 1:1 previews and rebuilt standard. Use the Library>Previews menus.

  • Quick qmaster sharing question

Just a quick question. Should I turn on and off sharing for my 8 instance cluster as I get ready to use compressor and qmaster, or can I just leave it on all the time. Does it slow other things down if sharing is enabled all the time?
    Thanks,
    Ken

You should be ok with just leaving it on. As long as QMaster isn't encoding anything, then it just sits there.

  • Preview Mode question

    Hi All,
I'm new to the iMac, having just come from the PC world, and am hoping you can help me with a couple questions. I'm a photographer and in a PC opened my photos in preview then when I wanted to edit one, I'd right click and then choose the program I wanted to open the photo in (Photoshop). How do I do this from preview mode, or can I? I don't like selecting images to open from the thumbnails, because they're just not big enough to see the photo clearly.
Second question. Windows 7 allows you a folder view that opens the folder slightly, so you can see a couple of the contents inside. I don't believe Mac has that option but I thought I'd check. It's really handy, and didn't realize how often I'd used it.
    Thanks!!

Using the Finder's coverflow or column view is one way to get a little bit larger preview, and QuickLook can be used for an even larger (or full screen) preview. Right-clicking on a file will let you choose what to open it with (you will need to exit QuickLook if that is what you are using at the time).

  • Previews behavior question.

    First question:
When I force render previews to build to standard size (2048px / medium, in my case), I will see the progress bar do its thing and after X amount of minutes, will be done. In the grid view any of the visable thumbnails will look like my default develop preset has been applied, but when scrolling down any thumbnail that comes up has to be redrawn from the camera thumbnail to the newly redrawn thumbnail with my settings - all showing the "three white dots" in above the thumbnail. Why can't all of the thumbnails be done in the background, as implied by the progress bar being completed?
    Second question:
With my previews set at 2048px/medium, when going from loupe to develop, there's always a slight hesitation of about 3 seconds where the image on screen comes into focus. If I set the preview setting to high, would that hesitation be shortened and/or eliminated?
    Third question:
    Would rendering 1:1 previews eliminate problems 1 & 2?
    My setup:
LR 3.2, iMac i7 2.8ghz, 12gb ram, ATI 4850 512mb, all data disks have more than 80% free space.

    Second question:
With my previews set at 2048px/medium, when going from loupe to develop, there's always a slight hesitation of about 3 seconds where the image on screen comes into focus. If I set the preview setting to high, would that hesitation be shortened and/or eliminated?
    No.
    Third question:
    Would rendering 1:1 previews eliminate problems 1 & 2?
What's your screen resolution. If you have 30" screen, 2048 px might be too small and this forces Lightroom to build larger previews on the fly when you switch to Loupe view. If this is the case, building 1:1 will solve problem #2. Don't know about #1.

  • Remote file sharing questions

I'm trying to login to my G5, to share files, from a Macbook connected to the Internet via wireless (Airport Extreme card). It's not working, and I have a few questions. Help would be appreciated.
    - I have a .mac account, and BTMM activated on both computers. Is this necessary for remote file sharing? IOW, what's the difference between using BTMM and using "File Sharing" in the Sharing panel?
    - I'm trying to login using "connect to server" and the afp address of my G5. The address that shows in the G5 sharing panel is a variation of my router/modem's address. But there must be many other users with the same address--how does this work (the afp doesn't seem to be a unique IP address)?
    - I've searched and haven't found a good site that describes in detail the differences between "file sharing" "remote login" "remote management" etc, and how to use them. Any suggesions?
If this helps at all, here's something I did in Terminal:
    dns-sd -X udp 123 456 789
Timestamp if External Address Protocol Internal Port External Port TTL
    19:01:49.410 0 0.0.0.0 16 123 0 0
Also, if anyone has suggestions on making my remote connection happen, I'd love to hear it. I'm trying to access files from my G5, and I'm away--this isn't a LAN.
    thanks.

A couple more details: right now I'm near a Mac network, and I do see two Macs under the "shared" tab in my finder window. And when I was at home I could see my G5 there, and was able to log into it from my Macbook. Also, my G5 is set to never sleep.

  • LR5 1:1 Previews workflow question

I don't work with 1000's of images at a time, so I build 1:1 previews on import to speed up the editing process.  After editing, I do want to discard the 1:1 previews to save disk space, and I usually do it manually on the keepers and have the prefs to delete after 30 days as well.  My question is:  If I delete an image from the disk before I discard the 1:1 preview, does the preview data automatically get deleted from the catalog file as well?  Or should I delete the 1:1 preview first before deleting the image from the disk?  Does it even matter?  I'm just not sure how the catalog preview data gets synced with a photo when it gets deleted.  Thank you.

No, I'm afraid you're not reading my explanation right....so let me try again.
When you work in the Library module, you are seeing what are effectively jpeg previews of your raw files (assuming you are using raw of course, though the same principles apply for other file types). These can be built at several points, e.g. import or post-import, and can be built in several sizes, e.g. minimal, standard, 1:1. When you open an image in Library LR will fetch and load the appropriate preview for the size of the image display area and the zoom factor being used. If one doesn't exist for the viewing mode (e.g. zooming to 1:1 when no 1:1 previews have been pre-built), there will be a delay whilst it is built.
When working in Develop, however, those previews aren't used (except momentarily when you first select an image). Instead the raw file is converted, and the converted image "preview" is cached only, and this is what you see on your screen, and which is then updated in real-time as you move sliders. Note that this reading and conversion of the raw data happens every time you load an image into Develop (apart from maybe the last one or two images which might still be in the cache if you go back to them). In order to help speed-up this conversion, a variety of methods are used....for DNG files there is the option to build "Fast Load Data" which is written into the DNG header during initial conversion and then read when you open the file into Develop. For proprietary raw files there is the ACR cache entries, which are small files (similar to the DNG Fast Load Data) containing partly-processed raw data. This is a very simplified explanation of the process, which with LR5 is further complicated by the introduction of Smart Previews.
OK, the issue here is: when are those ACR cache entries for proprietary raw files created? As I tried to explain earlier, an off-shoot of the rendering of Standard or 1:1 Library previews is the creation of the ACR cache entry (if one doesn't already exist). However, when you open a file in Develop and Lightroom finds that there isn't already an ACR cache entry it will be created then at the same time as the full raw conversion is done. In other words, every time the actual raw data is read, be it Library preview rendering or Develop image loading, Lightroom checks for the existence of the ACR cache entry and creates it if it's not already there. Which is what I said earlier.
It logically follows, therefore, that opening a file into Develop when the ACR Cache entry isn't present would be slower than if it does already exist (though you might struggle to see the difference).
Now does that make more sense? And it doesn't contradict elie-d.
