Preview "Slideshow Mode"

Hey everyone,
When I view a PDF in "slideshow mode" in Preview, I miss two features. Maybe I am blind and you can point out what to do:
1) The PDF always opens up on the main screen (I have a second screen attached to the MacBook, which I normally would use for a presentation.. Think of a projector..)
2) One cannot use the Remote Control!? How come I can use it in virtually any other program, including Keynotes etc. but not for simple PDFs?
If this shouldnt be possible with Preview under Tiger, is it possible with Leopard?
Cheers,
-Hendrik

Thanks for your swift reply M.
I think I should've been more clear in my post. I'm used to using the arrow keys on my keyboard for flicking through the pages of the pdf and this doesn't work when entering slideshow-mode, it used to work in Tiger.
Your solution is similar to the "Index"-sheet thing I used to do. When you hit the play-button you can't immediately start browsing the pdf, you have to wait until the second page loads, right? After that the arrows are working as they should, I think this behaviour should be initiated immediately upon entering the slideshow-mode.

• Can't browse through pdf in Preview's slideshow mode

Hi!
I've been waiting for this issue to be fixed since Leopard was introduced but even at 10.5.3 nothing has happened.
When opening a multipaged pdf in Preview and going into slideshow mode (CommandshiftS), the next and previous buttons doesn't work. If you activate the "Index sheet" mode and the directly deactivate it again, the buttons work and I can browse through the pages of the pdf. This means that the functionality works but not without doing the Index sheet-trick. It's quite annoying to be having to do this every time I want to browse an e-book.
Has anybody got any ideas on how to fix this or is it a bug that should be fixed in 10.5.4?

Thanks for your swift reply M.

• USB Pointer problems with Preview slideshow view

I often give talks for which my slides are in PDF format (typically produced using LaTeX). Under Mountain Lion I could open the relevant PDF in Preview Slideshow View and click between slides using a Logitech pointer (Model R-RB5). Since updating to Mavericks, however, the pointer will no longer advance slides. It seems to work as expected to move between pages if Preview is not full-screen, or if it's in full-screen mode, just not in slideshow mode (and full-screen mode isn't ideal for giving talks). All seems to be fine in Adobe Reader, but I prefer Preview for one or two reasons, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Everybody, report preview problems to apple at:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
My biggest problem in preview 4.0 is it freezes while trying to view large images across four apple LCD's. Sometimes I see a gray screen.

• Preview Slideshow

Whenever I open a batch of pics in Preview and choose the option to view them as a Slideshow the pics display in a completely random order.
Is there any way that I can get them to display in numerical order? i.e the order I took them in.

not to offend anyone, but with all respect that isn't a solution. There are many reasons why someone would want to view images in Preview in the order they were taken or some other sorted order. A slideshow program is not a PREVIEW program. Preview is a program for doing exactly what it says PREVIEWING. Unfortunatley Apple has stricken it with many limitations that make it less than desirable for PREVIEWING sets of images efficiently. hopefully though, i can help you with your problem.
as for your issue, i personally do not have that problem when viewing images. i see you're running 10.4, so i assume you've also run all software updates that it has thrown your way. if that is the case, im stumped as to why your Preview would behave differently than mine.
so here are a few things to look at, if you've not been aware of them to this point.
have you right-clicked (ctrl-clicked) on an image in the drawer before going to Slideshow mode? If you do this it gives you options for sorting your images in a particular order. You can also drag and drop the images in the image drawer to change their order. you can also drag images from the Finder into the image drawer to add them to the set. i've tested these features and when i go to Slideshow they appear in Slideshow in the order I sorted or placed them in. MAKE SURE you realize that whichever image in the drawer is currently selected when you choose Slideshow, that it will be the first image to be shown. Selecting the first image in the drawer will get Preview to start with the first image in your set when you go into Slideshow mode. You should also notice that if you go to Index view when in Slideshow, that your images should appear from Left-to-Right-Top-to-Bottom (like reading a book) in the same order as they appeared in the image drawer (Top-to-Bottom) before entering Slideshow mode.
i hope this helps. if you continue to have problems, i would suggest next taking a look at your filenames. i've not been able to test this theory, but if the images you're viewing don't share a similar structure (ie, DSC001.jpg, DSC002.jpg) but are random filenames (ie JohnBoylaughing.jpg , 2007vacationpic.jpg) then it could be possible that the Image Drawer is sorting "properly", but the Slideshow component of Preview is interpretting the names, dates, etc different. To test this, rename the files 001,002,003, etc, and see if that makes a difference for you.
again i hope that helps.
i personally struggle with the fact that when an external display is attached to my laptop, i am unable to get Preview to go into Slideshow (fullscreen) mode on the attached display. It always defaults to the laptops display. oddly you can drag the Slideshow controls to the external display, and it will stay there, EVEN if you leave Slideshow and return, it'll stay on the External display, but the Slideshow will default to the built-in one. but thats a whole different discussion now isn't it
good luck

• Bridge CS3 Previews/Slideshow Scaling Too Slow on Powerbook G4 15"

I've been using Photoshop CS3 itself for months and it's plenty fast. Bridge, on the other hand, is unusable for me right now because when I click an 6-megapixel jpeg image, a fuzzy/blotchy preview showed immediately, but it takes a full seven seconds for a high-quality preview to show. The exact same thing occurs in the slideshow mode. Of course, once the high-quality preview has been cached, it shows up instantly, but this is a real issue for newly-viewed files.
Is this a known issue? If so, is there a way to make the high-quality preview reasonably fast, so that there's only a delay of a second or two max?
Graphic Converter is quite snappy for previews and full-screen slideshows on this ~1.6 Ghz G4, but I would prefer to use Bridge for its advanced organizing features and integration with Photoshop.
Thank you for your help,
Cameron

>It makes no difference whether your files originated as 10- or 12-megapixel digital camera files or as 120 MB 16-bit Tiff scans, 4,000 images are still 4,000 images!

Actually, no. How files originate makes
b all
the difference!

E.g. a film scan is by definition very slow, so processing, sorting, culling, stacking all occur prior to a few hero images being selected for scanning. Those activities occur manually rather than in software.

Similarly - again with no disrespect intended - your 4000 images captured over weeks on a slow digicam with a film-centric mindset are
b nothing
like capturing hundreds or thousands of shots, many of
i dynamic subjects,
during intense DSLR RAW shooting of a day or two.

E.g. the other day I was alone (meaning no helper to control the feisty new pup) walking my new lab puppy during failing light and decided to shoot a pic for emailing to friends. I would run away from the puppy, turn around and shoot continuous high speed autofocus pix of Ruby as she ran toward me. Even though Ruby can run almost as fast as I can, in 5 minutes of failing light I had shot 50-100 12 MP RAW images that then needed to be keyworded, stacked, stacks reviewed for ranking and culls, and an email generated.

Nikon D2x, f/4, 85mm.

The whole process was easy and fast. With a low end point-and-shoot in failing light I would not have had 50 properly exposed, properly focused naturally lit pix that needed close comparative evaluation. At best one would end up with one or two focused keepers; no fancy software necessary to cull a dozen out-of-focus pix.

My point is simply that folks who are evolving into DSLR workflows, especially those of dynamic subjects like people (with constantly changing expressions that are well suited to shooting stacks of quick image captures), should beef up their hardware, buy the Aperture tutorial/CD, download the Aperture and/or LR trials and check out a modern workflow.

• Photos are dark and cannot be used in slideshow mode. Also cannot move photos in a sequence. Also photos will not move from grid to add to another collection.

Lightroom 4, photos are dark when in slideshow mode. Therefore, cannot create a slideshow. Cannot move photos from grid to add to another collection. Also cannot change sequence of photos. Have searched multiple times for troubleshooting help online with no resolution available.

Just to clarify my problem with the "dark photos"....when in slideshow mode, photos are dark and state "no photo selected" I've created multiple slideshows and this was never an issue. Just downloaded updates as well for Lightroom 4 and this didn't seem to help either.

• IPhoto 11 slideshow mode decreases the image sharpness and quality

The images that weight over 5 MB and are fine and sharp become somewhat blured when displayed in the iPhoto '11 slideshow mode. The loss of image sharpness is just too big. The pictures look like they were made with a 100$ camera or even worse. I know the images are fine and big enough. I used picasa slideshow mode just to check. I saw a much better image quality and no noticable lose of sharpness.
Anyone has an idea why the iPhoto 11 slideshow mode looses so much image sharpness?

We all like iPhoto and its ease of use, good looks and fancy features.
However Aplle must concentrate on the core .... sufficient quality of the displayed images. The colors, sharpness, tones - the essence of photography
I understand that iPhoto is not the Aperture. But if the Slide Show mode virtually washes the sharpness away from the pictures than something is not right! Picture that is not sharp is worth the trash
If picasa slide show can do it I am sure iPhoto slide show can do it even better! We are waiting for the upgrade

• How do I get Preview Slideshow to appear in external monitor/projector

In Preview in Snow Leopard, I could set up a slideshow and use it for presentations through an external monitor or on a screen using a projector. I did this by dragging the Preview window onto the external monitor and then clicking on View/Slideshow. A kind of poor man's PowerPoint presentation, but very quick to set up. Now, unless the displays are mirrored, as soon as I click on View/Slideshow, the slideshow is "sucked" back onto the screen on my MacBook, leaving the external screen blank.
I have found that there are alternatives to Preview available, like Xee, but with the Preview slideshow feature, only the pictures appear on the screen, with all the background being black, which looks more "professional".
Does anyone know if there's anything I can do to stop the Preview slideshow ending up back on the MacBook?
David

There is something terribly wrong with Lion's support for two monitors, compared to previous Mac OSes, and it looks like you have found another instance of that fact. Oddly enough it seems like QuickLook may work where Preview doesn't. Anyway, I have two monitors and if I move a folder full of images to the secondary monitor, then select the images and right click and then click QuickLook in the Contextual Menu, then click the full screen arrows and the play button, the slideshow will play on the second monitor. If I open the pix in Preview, move the Preview window to the second monitor, and select "Play Slideshow" it promptly moves everything to the main screen, ditto for clicking the full screen arrows within Preview--moves to main monitor and in effect turns off secondary monitor. So give QuickLook a try and see if that will work for your purposes.

• Change presenter note font size and edit notes in slideshow mode

Hi, I just switched to Keynote 5.03 and am still learns its features. I have some questions about the slideshow mode of keynote
1. While in slideshow rehearsal mode with presenter notes showing, is there a way to zoom in on the notes to make the text bigger as you can in Powerpoint, which allows you to zoom up to 400%? This is handy: I can magnifying the notes without having to change its font size, hence no need to exit the slideshow mode.
2. Powerpoint lets you edit the text of notes on the fly during a slideshow ("view presenter tool" mode), is there a way to do this in Keynote?
3. The slide thumnails (allow you to jump to a certain slide) on top of the presenter screen are always very fuzzy, is it possible to increase the resolution to get a higher quality image?

I believe that all of these are limitations of the current version of Keynote.

• Apple TV reboots when viewing photos and selecting slideshow mode

Just purchased the A-TV, so only experience is with the 2.3 OS release. I can view my synced photos without issue, but when I select slideshow mode, the screen goes black for a few minutes and then the box reboots. The diagnostics state there is not a hardware problem, but this is hopefully not a 'feature' of A-TV. Help!

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
There could be a/some photos causing a problem, are you able to sync your photos in batches to try to eliminate this possibility.

• Undersaturation of images in Slideshow mode

I am finding that my JPG images are undersaturated when viewed in Slideshow mode on this website that I am using to exhibit my photography. I converted my images to sRGB and have done everything I can think of to solve the problem. The images look fine in Gallery mode. Any suggestions?

Michael
You can order your photos in Library Module, in Grid mode. To be able to establish a user sort order, you must be either
In a collection (not a smart collection)
In a bottom level folder (no more subfolders underneath it)
In a non-bottom level folder, but without having "Include Photos from Subfolders" marked
A collection is my prefered way for slideshows, since you can
Select the photos you want
Order them as you like

• Slideshow mode not seeing Photostream photos

How do I get my photos in Photostream into my regular photos on my iPad? I want all the photos in both Photostream and Photos to play when I use the picture frame slideshow mode.

Just to clarify my problem with the "dark photos"....when in slideshow mode, photos are dark and state "no photo selected" I've created multiple slideshows and this was never an issue. Just downloaded updates as well for Lightroom 4 and this didn't seem to help either.

• Preview/Presenation mode

What is the Best way to Create a DVD with Preview/Presenation mode with the presenation mode going to a black screen before the clip and after with the user haveing to hit enter to activate the clip and then back to the menu at the end.

Hi James
The way I'd do it is when you hit the presentation button, it takes you to another menu that is a black screen with an invisble button - when you press enter the button targets the video, which the endjumps to another black menu with an invisible button which takes you back to the main menu. You could use some scripting here to do everything with the one black menu and depending on the length of your video you'll probably need to use scripting to differentiate between the presenter mode and the regular play button.

• Powerpoint 2011 Crashes When Entering Slideshow Mode attached to Projector.

My MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 crashes every time I try to enter slideshow mode in Powerpoint 2011 if I am driving a projector. It does not crash if I enter slideshow mode without the projector, of if I connect to the projector but don't enter slideshow mode. I give a lot of presentations, so this is a real problem.

Confirm I have had the same problem with Office 2011 Powerpoint. Crash to unresponsive black screen, must force off with power button. 15" Mid-2010 MacBookPro 6.2 MC373C/A 4GB RAM and Snow Leopard 10.6.8
Began slowly/intermittently in July when I was working daily with the pptx. Was then crashing with a 2nd monitor attached going into slide show mode. Crash problem became more frequent over time.
Now the crash occurs with certainty in almost any configuration - slide show with 2nd monitor/projector, or without any monitor/projector or other peripherals attached, and with either the battery or 110v MagSafe power supply.
I have tried creating an alternate user account - and the problem again starts randomly and acelerates in frequency.
Uninstalled and reinstalled Office2011 for Mac as per MS instruction support pages. Same crash, on launch , when opening a file after launch, or when clicking onto a different slide if a successful launch does occur.
Powerpoint at this time and in this condition is unuseable.
Too bad because I have another presentation to prepare and give tomorrow, and I have already paid for and now depend on the MBP, and at this time the MSOffice2011 software.
If anyone has solved why this problem is occurring (I see it occurs frequently enough that similar questions appear in many forums) - please share your insights and a solution if you have one? ThankYou.
