Preview, Textedit still loading slow in 10.7.4

Ever since installing Lion, Preview and TextEdit take up to 20 seconds to show content. The app's menu appears almost immediately, for the content to show up (even small files like 50 kb) up to you can do a lot of other things while waiting. System: 8GB memory, 500 GB standard hardfile, now Lion 10.7.4 - still the same problem. Doesn't happen always: After the first item has been show using Preview, the following files opened appear immediately. After working with other apps extensively, then going back to preview - the same problem. To note: the quickLook function in finder does not have this problem!
I have seen this problem reported many times since 10.7.2 with a number of suggested fixes: disable iCloud, reinstall System etc. All of this has been done, no change. What has not been done: reformatting the drive, reinstalling everything from scratch. Not very willing to do this, because it reminds too much of days and days spent doing just that in old Windows times.
I have also seen other users mentioning they have no such problem. In my surrounding (about 4 Macbooks running Lion), this problem can be repeated on each machine - so far haven't seen one Lion installation working without this trouble. Seems to be a performance problem accessing the file system: When saving a file under a new name, it can also take many seconds for the file dialog to show up.
This is getting more and more disturbing: There is no 'official' reaction from Apple to see anywhere, the problem has remained through 3 updates now, and repeated 20 second delays for such a simple feature are no serious bases for working with an operating system.
thank you!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The Guest login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

I wiped my disks and did a clean install of Mavericks on my mac pro and mbp. Finder is still very slow. I copied my current HDs to othe drives, the reased my main drives, loaded the OS and did a migrate.
I thought Maveriks was supposed to run better under a clean install. I am just not seeing it.
I feel I have exhusted all options on this new OS, and I have ailing macs that no longer fast.

Try a SafeBoot and see if there is a noticable difference.

I had somebody  work on my OS 10.9.2 to speed it up. He failed and now  Preview, Textedit, App Store, Mail (crashes) and Contacts  do not work anymore. I can still use Safari, Firefox, Word, Photoshop and iPhoto etc. How do I get the Apple programs fixed again?

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

I go to Google Maps and try to enter address in search bar.

Nothing ever comes up -- map does not load.
If I append "q?=us" to url (below) (without quotes), it works.

It comes up on google.com.au but not google.com
It happened after they added the new privacy popup with with MapGL also being added.
Disabling all cookies with Web Developer or browsing in private mode works but when settings are put back to normal it stops working.
I deleted all cookies and cleared cache but that did not help. Strange that clearing cookies did not solve the problem because disabling cookies works.

  • *** Can't get my text to load as text - still loads as an image

I have an iWeb site I've done and I'm still having trouble with some of my text being displayed as an image. This is an issue for me because it is slowing down the loading of my site.
I have 1 page where I converted the text to Georgian and it loads quick (text is loaded as text and not an image). I have another page on my site that also has all the text as Georgian, but it is still loading the text as an image.
Why could this be happening? What are some trouble-shooting tips that people may have to make sure that web-formated (web font) text appears as text.......any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!

Using the 'TextEdit Passthru' technique will generally resolve text to image problems:
    Copy the text you want.
Paste it into a new TextEdit Document.
    Format > Make Plain Text.
    Copy the text from TextEdit.
Paste it into iWeb at the desired location.
    Reformat within iWeb.

  • WHY AFTER EFFECTS STILLS SO SLOW IN THE NEW MAC PRO?

I have the new mac pro with this settings:
    3 GHz 8-Core Intel Xeon E5
    64 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 ECC
    AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB
    Software OS X 10.9.2
And the AE performs slower than in my old mac pro. I have set the preferences as seen on all those tutorials on this site, I have an SSD external disc for cache files, memory and multiprocessing settings correctly...and previews are very very slow, and I can not even render a single comp without waiting 10 minutes. I am very disappointed and frustrated with this situation...
    Am I missing something?

I don't understand why it's even up to the user to figure out what settings are best.  Isn't the application in a vastly superior position to know what its resource constraints are at any given moment?  Instead I have to try rendering a couple of comps, kill the render, fix the render queue since AE STILL doesn't offer a graceful way to quit and resume renders.
I have to say that one of the attributes of AE that consistently disappoints me is multiprocessing and its accompanying memory management policies.  I regularly produce hundreds of network graphics at a go, and I can never reap any benefit from multiprocessing, because AE has to load the entire project into each core, instead of just loading the comps it needs to render at any given time.  Similarly, a project that requires 400 heavily-automated versions (a regular occurrence for some of my Latin America clients, where graphics have to be versioned for multiple feeds and languages) can simply choke AE.  If it could load this stuff into memory on-the-fly (or at least offload some of it when memory gets tight), this wouldn't be a problem, and I sincerely doubt the performance would be worse than it is now.  This is on a previous-gen Mac Pro with 48 GB RAM, so, while not strictly state-of-the-art, it's no slouch.
Heck, even opening some of these projects just to browse their contents is a painful 30-minute process, as AE apparently has to not only load everything into memory before I can even do anything, but, judging by how it hangs for many minutes at  99% on the progress bar, it also seems to be evaluating all the expressions in all the hundreds of comps (presumably so it can render the project thumbnails).  And yes, I've tried splitting the projects up, but this leads to its own complications, particularly when revisions come in a week or two later.
I don't want any of this to sound overly negative, since I know AE has a small team and this sort of stuff isn't trivial to implement.  I do appreciate this application and all it does, particularly for me creatively and professionally.  I just get a bit tired of seeing new releases come every year and this stuff seems to go unaddressed.

  • Plugins Loading Slower In Photoshop CC 15.2.1 - Mac

Since updating to the latest version, two plugins I created for Photoshop CC are loading very slow. At times I need to click in the panel to make it load. Prior to the update the plugins loaded fine and the still load quickly in Photoshop CC ver 14.2.1.
This slow loading is on a Mac. The plugins still load fine on Windows 7.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue? Does anyone know what is causing the slow loading?
    Thanks in advance - Sam

My advice:  Rather that wait hopefully, try some alternate configuration settings.
Specifically, go into your Preferences - Performance - Advanced Settings panel, and try the different options there, making sure to close Photoshop and restart it after each change, then test.
It's possible Photoshop asked the nVidia display driver what it can do, and it said it could do something very advanced, but in the driver implementation some part of that advanced operation is run in the CPU, not the GPU.  NVidia has been known to do this!
Thus it may be that if you choose a lesser drawing mode or change something (e.g., 30 bit display) you might find that particular combination of settings makes things run faster.

  • CS3 Still Very Slow with psd files

I'm still having terrible performance issues with CS3 and imported CMYK psd files containing spot colours. I have a 9MB psd file with two spot colours imported into a layer in Illustrator, with some illustrator line work on top. Just zooming in give me a 5 second screen redraw, everything is very sluggish and occasionally I get a crash. I still get these weird alert box saying "Generating Pixels" now and again when importing the psd files.
    G5 Dual 2.0GHz, 2.5GB RAM, OSX 10.4.11, Illustrator 13.02, Photoshop 10.0.1.
I'm not having these issues on a different mac running CS2.

I'm thinking it might be RAM, I have Photoshop and Illustrator open at the same time. I have around 100GB of scratch disk space.
But weirdly the slowness is not apparent using CS2. Things are just dead slow with a Photoshop file placed in Illustrator CS3. These files are only 30MB, but contain 3 spot channels + CMYK. Even with preview mode switched off, it's still very slow and I mean everything slows down.
There is a lot of disk activity going on, so maybe my hard disks on this 3 year old mac are just getting too long in the tooth.
What drives me nuts is I remember doing the same kind of work in Illustrator 8 on a G4 running System 9 and everything was MUCH faster.
Oh, and I'd better not mention how fast Freehand was for this kind of work...

Firefox does not stop loading even after the site is loaded and continues as if it is still loading. I have clocked it to 15 minutes, why? edit
    Details

Sorry, I should distinguish between slow loading and manual reloading.
I understood your problem to be that Firefox never finished loading the page, i.e., some part of the page was loading too slowly.
By reloading, I meant Ctrl+r (or the reload button), to manually reload the page. You can disregard any cached files and reload all content fresh from the server by adding the Shift key, i.e., Ctrl+Shift+r (helpful when specific sites do not load correctly).
If the page is automatically reloading itself over and over, that sounds like a completely different problem.

  • Website design still kinda slow

    Hi there,
Basically I have been struggling with my 1st flash webiste, just about bodged it together, but it is loading terribly slowly.
    http://www.siobhannolan.co.uk/tester/
Having  consulted someone on this site, I reduced the xml loading and optimised  all the jpegs, which made a lil difference, but its still horribly  slow.
I've had a bit of trouble with the dynamic buttons  too, when I added a second line of text they would overlap the btn  below, to counter this I added blank xml nodes between the problem  buttons, which sort of sorted the issue (although when you click on one  of these a second time they load the wrong page), I read somewhere that  unnessasary xml code can slow down a webite, plus my freind whos site it  is keeps getting the old "some code in the site is causing your  computer to run slowly" msg (her internets slower than mine.)
I'm  also wondering if the amount of images in the swfs is slowing it down  (some of the swfs are coming in at more than 4mb) - was I wrong to ditch  the dynamic loading? or is there another way to compress the swfs?
Any help will as ever be graciously recieved, kind regards and fingers crossed D.

I don't know what browser you use, but if you have Safari as an option,
I'd advise looking at the activity of your website (Window>Activity).
The preloading, is relatively normal for a flash website and not too long to bore people wishing to visit your site, according to surveys.
However, when you visit the projects section - this is where the problems start.
The way in which you have organised content on your website means huge 4mb, as you states, file sizes for each section. As Ned has already pointed out, 4mb is not good.. In terms of a design perspective, the content is firstly, not necessarily all worthwhile, and secondly, if it is, why not distribute it around the website, with a few subheadings? If you're new to flash this would be relatively easy to do and would save the hassle of resizing all your content (though, it would definitely be worthwhile!)
So to conclude, basically, it's your structure.
You've placed too much content in one place and the best advise I could give, is to distribute it elsewhere, or remove.
I hope you get this fixed!
    Regards.

  • X-Fi + 2 GFX-Cards = high CPU-Load, slow Mouse, hanging system

    >X-Fi + 2 GFX-Cards = high CPU-Load, slow Mouse, hanging systemA Hey guys,
I'm running 2 GF 8800 GTs (PCIe .) cards on a MSI Eclipse SLI board. My Audigy2 ZS PCI runned fine in this system.
I just replaced the Audigy by a PCIe X-Fi (EMU20K2 audio processor - not the xtreme audio from MSI).
Now I'm dealing with the following issue:
    - System startup is slow
    - in Windows, Mouse is slow, stuttering
    - high CPU-Load
    - very slow system response
!!! Attention !!! I had this problems allready at the st boot with the X-Fi, when the driver from creative wasn't installed (the card was recognized as "HD Audio" bei Windows 7). Installing the drivers didn't help.
If I install only one graphics card, the system runns fine and I can use the X-Fi and it's Software without problems.
If I replace the X-Fi by the PCIe Xtreme Audio from MSI, System runns fine.
If I use Win XP with the two GFX cards and the X-Fi, System runns fine.
    Can you help me?

youtube loads slow after Shockwave Flash 11.5 r502 update, never had this problem before. the browser i am using is google chrome. everything is updated. i have a download speed monitor on, it shows the youtube videos downloads 200kb/s regardless the resolution and my internet is 1500kb/s. i thought it might be the monitor but i turn it off the videos still loads very slow. i dont know what to do.

The issue appears to be limited to older Flash 8/ActionScript 2 content.  If you have access to the ActionScript source, there are a couple workarounds here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4841531#4841531#4841531.

  • I WEB loads slow and grey

My iweb site which is hosted by .mac loads slow and grey on pc's. The grey goes away when loaded but I would rather not have that.
    Any suggestions?

You are thinking along the right track. The problem is the PNGs so try to eliminate the PNGs. Where do the PNGs come from? Well, it turns out that iWeb converts your JPG images into PNGs if you let iWeb do ANYTHING at all to the image. This includes resizing, rotating, framing, opacity changes, drop shadows, reflections...anything.
So what do you think the secret to minimizing PNGs is then??? Right....don't let iWeb do any of these image manipulations. Resize your images outside of iWeb if you can. Apply the effects that you like to your images before bringing them into iWeb. Etc, etc, etc...
I know it seems like this is what you'd expect iWeb to do for you, but unfortunately a side effect of letting iWeb take care of these things is PNG conversion.
Even after doing all that you can do, iWeb still has templated items that only exist as PNGs...so you will not be able to completely get rid of PNGs, but you can for a lot of things. That will help your site load faster in general and without those ugly grey boxes where YOUR images should be.
