Preview thinks RAW files corrupt

I used to be able to open my .CR2 files from my Canon Rebel XSi w/ Preview after I installed the Camera Raw pack 2.1. Now I get this error (screenshot: http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/1658/errorfk5.png). This is happening around the time I began using Adobe Lightroom. Is there anyway I can reset Preview? Like is there a library folder or something I can look into?
Thanks.

HI Andrew,
Might be a corrupted Preview preference file... try this:
go here; MacintoshHD/Users/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder, locate this file:
com.apple.preview.plist Drag that folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot.
See if that makes a difference.

Sorry to trouble you but this has never happened before so I need help.
    I loaded 300 photos into LR 5.7
    I deleted 200 of them.
But I asked LR not to remove them from the HD in case I might need them again in the future.
When I go into Finder, all the files are there showing 15M 18M whatever files size, but no preview.  All the files show "dimension 0 X 0"
Preview won't open them saying "format not supported"
But I can open them in LR5 and CS6
I can even edit them, from LR5, including using plug ins.
    I tried reboot.  No good.

Do you have a new camera?
I note that my D750 raw images need update 6.01 in Yosemite OS. Check this site- OS X Yosemite: Supported digital camera RAW formats - Apple Support

  • Raw Files Corrupted or Software Issue?

Hi guys, first post here! I have been looking for info on this particular issue but can not quite find an aswer. So here is my issue...
I shoot on a Canon 60D, have so for 2+ years always in RAW and now using Photoshop CS6 with the latest raw plugin. I just shot some photos and am having major issues, see below. This is how all of my RAW files look. Blown out, pixelated and just all around awful.
When looking at them in camera, they look fine as well as the thumbnails when transferred to my computer. However when I open them up in Photoshop this is what I get. Also, if I convert the imges in camera from RAW to JPEG and then transfer them to my computer they are fine and look the way they should. Any thoughts? Thanks!

The difference of the reply #4 shot and the initial shot that has very strong blue coloring, appears to be the use of flash which brightens the foreground with daylight-balanced flash lighting and minimizes the overexposure of the colored lighting, so while you can see the various colors, they aren't overexposed, which leads to banding as the channels clip at different points on the way to white.  One issue with the reply #4 image, of the DJ, is that the blacks are not very black.
Back to the original topic:  the files do not appear to be corrupted, nor does there appear to be a software issue.  But the Adobe Camera Raw defaults don't look good for these pictures in extreme lighting.
I was able to extract the camera embedded previews for each shot using ExifToolGUI.  These are reduced-size but should show the toning and color processing the camera would apply to its own JPGs.  If these are not what you see for the JPGs from your camera then you might supply those as part of your shared dropbox folder.
I am using Lightroom 5.3 to do the comparisons which should duplicate the processing done by ACR 8.3, but it provides an easier to show side-by-sides as well as the processing applied in the last example.  I am using a Windows 7 64-bit computer with a standard-gamut monitor that is profiled but that profile is close to sRGB so I have not taken the time to convert my screenshots to sRGB since they will almost be the same either way:
A comparison between the camera processed raw files and the Adobe processed raw files shows us that the default Adobe processing is more saturated, more contrasty and with harsh color transitions as compared the camera jpg.  The Copy 1 is a virtual copy in Lightroom so I could reset it to default values and not touch the original user processing supplied in the XMP:
However, by merely changing the camera profile in the Camera Calibration section from Adobe Standard to Camera Standard we see almost the same rendering between Adobe and Canon, so if you're trying to start with the same place the camera rendering is, then just switch your camera profile to Camera Standard:
Now, the dropbox version of IMG_3277.CR2 came with an XMP file that has user settings that are much improved compared to the default rendering, and this includes quite a bit of change in the Camera Calibration sliders to reduce saturation and shift hues a bit.
Here are those user settings with the Adobe Standard camera profile at the left, compared to a pay-for VSCO Fuji film simulation profile along with using Auto Tone, Exposure -1 and Tint -150 to reduce the purple, on the right, but not quite as much as the OP's settings.  I'm not saying mine is an improvement or that VSCO profiles are useful, just that there are many ways to adjust an image and color profiles can make a difference especially in extreme lighting situations as we have, here:

  • Bridge CS6 Previews of raw-files have bad (pixelated) quality after editing.

I'm having problems with using Bridge for browsing my pictures. Preview quality of edited raw (nef) files is terrible. It looks like a very low quality jpeg. The untouched NEF's are fine, and saving the edited NEF as PSD also gives a perfect preview.
    Purging Cache doesn't work.
    I'm using:
Operating System: Windows 7 64-bit Version: 6.1 Service Pack 1
    Adobe Bridge CS6 5.0.2.4 x64
    Camera Raw 7.3.0.71
    Adobe Photoshop Version: 13.0.1  x64
    2x Monitor 1920 x 1200
    Photo's made with Nikon D800E (7360 x 4912 px)
See screenshots of settings. Any Suggestions?

    What I find frustrating is:
    1. Raw previews look like crap compared to the file itself.
    2. Its possible to generate decent previews by a complicated purging-process.
I can imagine you are frustrated.
There are two differences on my set up so I can't check, first I use a Mac and you are on Windows and I use Canon and you Nikon.
However it should not result in this much visible flaws in the preview.
There can be a lot of cache files but Camera Raw Cache is something completely different then Bridge Cache.
Camera Raw is a .dat file and contains some info from the raw settings and probably other stuff that I can't find, it states being a video file but you can't play them.
Bridge cache are jpeg files that you can view, even without Bridge, for example they can be opened in PS itself without problems.
If you have set to build all at 100% then it will generate jpeg files in the original size at a high quality jpeg setting.
As said, I have a Mac but Yammer or Curt can provide you with the correct path to find the Bridge Cache folder yourself.
On my System this is in the user Library / caches/ Adobe/ Bridge CS6 and inhere is a folder called cache. This folder contains 4 folders.
    - 256   : contains the thumbnails, very small files (in the range of 10 to 50 kb)
    - 1024 : contains the HQ previews, relatively large files (500 KB to 3 MB, depending on the files itself)
    - data  : a text file containing all sorts of info, don't know what exactly but is a text file that also can grow to several 100 MB
    - Full   : in here are the 100 % previews settled and they can grow to huge proportions ( around 10 MB for 18 MP files, depending on file size and content etc)
If you have set to keep 100 % previews in Bridge prefs this last folder (full) will be taking a lot of space on your disk
If you also have set to export cache to folder it creates same size (hidden) files with this cache in the folder itself.
I never understood the need for export cache to folders for several reasons, first and most important, I had a longstanding bug preventing me from doing so (error message about overwriting a CacheT file) but also each version of Bridge has a different Cache format and you can't read older cache files. Also reading the cache file (especially when on DVD etc) takes a very long time. For purpose of needing to view archived files on external devices you better select the 'Prefer Embedded' option, works faster ten reading earlier exported cache.
Not sure how you did purge the Bridge Cache but in your case I would Quit Bridge and find the equivalent Cache folder on Windows (Yammer, Curt?).
manual delete this Cache folder with all its content and restart Bridge.
This provides you with a new, fresh but very empty cache file. You need to recache the lot for the previews.
If you are not sure just try it for experiment, move the old folder outside the library and try it. If it does not make any difference just Quit and replace the old file

  • Preview for RAW files from D90

Bridge will not show me a preview of my Raw files taken from my new D90. I have the new Camera Raw Plug-in so that I can open them up, just no preview from the Bridge Viewing dock. Can I fix this so that I know what I am opening up? Help please!

Purging the cache through the Tools menu in Bridge is necessary whenever you have files for which the cache was built before you updated ACR. It's standard procedure. Read the FAQs at the Adobe Camera Raw forum.
    It's also fixes other problems.
You still haven't told us where you installed the new ACR plug-in and what you did with the old one. Please post a screen shot or describe the path to the install folder in minute detail.

  • No Preview on RAW files

I'm running a MAC, OS X 10.8 with Photoshop Elements version 10 and Adobe Bridge CS4
I've just go myself a new Olympus OM-D5 camera. Very nice! One small problem though. The RAW files (*.ORF) don't show up as thumbs in the preview. The RAW convertor to extract them into Elements seems to be working fine. But I'd like to have the preview in Bridge working as well. My Cannon and Sony RAW files work fine in preview.
    Any thoughts?

  • 10.4.9 - Finder no longer previews Leica RAW files

I know that there have been a billion requests for someone, anyone, to get Aperture to read Leica RAW files (I have given up on this one), but there is a more fundamental issue that has been created with 10.4.9
We can no no longer even see the image in the Finder preview. This is all we get...
    http://www.andybarton.com/preview.jpg>
How on earth is anyone supposed to find their images without being able to see them?
If there is anyone here with a bright idea, I'd be grateful to receive it.
Failing that, how can I revert to 10.4.8?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Thumbnail Preview for RAW Files Not Appearing in Bridge

    Hello,
I'm running Adobe Bridge 5.1 on a Mac OS 10.9.2 (recently upgraded to Maverick) and I can no longer see thumbnail previews for my RAW files (which include .NEF, .CR2 and .RAF) though as of a few days ago this wasn't a problem. Not sure if it's related to the Maverick upgrade... but FYI, I do see thumbnail previews for .TIFF and .JPEG files.
I've already purged my cache generally and have also as a test chosen a local file to purge - that didn't work.
I've restarted Bridge at least 2x by pressing and holding the Option key.
I've also checked for Bridge updates - everything is up to date.
My Cache Options (within Preferences) are set to "Keep 100% Previews in Cache" and "Automatically Export Cache to Folders When Possible" - both checked.
Also downloaded the Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter 8.3, installed it but that didn't work.
I can't seem to find my Bridge cache folder or at least what's in the Library's "Caches" folder doesn't include anything for Bridge - see screenshot below.
Please help! Thank you in advance.

To me it seems related to your Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) converter. Clue inhere is you only miss the Raw files and have no problems in seeing other formats like jpeg and tiff.
The screenshot you delivered is from the wrong library, however, this same library (the one on system level) also is the location where you should be able to view the correct version of your ACR plugin. The path: library (same as per your screenshot)/Application support/ Adobe/ Plug ins/ CS6/ File Formats. inhere should be only one version of Camera Raw (called: "Camera Raw.plugin") and this should show version 8.3 (141).
I'm not sure about your bridge version number, Bridge 5 comes with PSCS6 but my most recent version of Bridge is 5.0.2.4.
Anyway, if you have only one ACR (8.3) installed in the above mentioned path then you might want to try to delete the Bridge plist file and Bridge cache file manually.
For this you have to Quit Bridge and find the user library (by default hidden, use menu Go in Finder and press option key to reveal).
Inhere find the plist file (user(your user name) / library / Preferences  and inhere find and manually delete the file called: "com.adobe.bridge5.plist"
The in same user library find Bridge Cache. User/Library/Caches/Adobe/Bridge CS6. Inhere are 2 files, the adobe Bridge plug in cache and the folder called Cache. delete (or move outside libray) both items.
The restart Bridge (If needed also again hold option key to reset preferences) and this will create fresh files for the previous deleted items, leaving you with an almost out of the box factory set version of Bridge.

  • RAW files corrupted in Aperture

With the upgrade to Mavricks and Aperture 3.5  I hoped my problems with RAW (ORF) images were over, but I am getting this again. Shooting RAW+JPEG and importing directly into Aperture, I'm seeing some image pairs like this:
I've gone in and deleted the plist, cleaned up the Aperture Library, no luck. Any suggestions?
    Brian

    leoni et al,
Seems there are two issues at work. One is the on-going problem with occasional RAW (ORF) images being corrupted. This post be a separate problem, e.g. using the Olympus in-camera "overlay" feature.
In the OM-D I can take up to 3 RAW images and overlay them in the camera; in this case I used 2 files,  both are preserved and a new combined RAW image is recorded on the SD card.
Adobe Camera RAW, and the native Olympus Viewer handle this with no problem, rendering both RAW images plus a combined RAW image. However, when imported into Aperture one of the 2 original RAW files disapears and the other RAW file is corrupted and a JPEG combined file is produced (as pictured above in the OP).

  • Imported RAW files corrupted but JPEG ok. Will this be ok in my library?

One of three of my SD cards imported about 10% of its RAW files with great chunks missing. I actually saved the folder onto external hard drive before trying to import with LR, and I CAN see quite normal RAW file images using iPhoto, but the same images are still fragmented when I import them directly from the external hard drive.
EXcuse use my ignorance, but can I import the jpeg images using Lightroom's DNG copy option (so that they are more stable); and will I be able to use them, and work on them, just as effectively as with all the successfully downloaded RAW images?
OR do I have to go back to Iceland for these 100 photos?!
    Thanks, Sandoise

    Sandoise wrote:
looking at images on the camera screen
That does not verify raw data, only embedded jpeg preview, which you already know is OK.
    Sandoise wrote:
I can see both RAW and JPEGS in iPhotos and they look perfectly good.
Well, seeing them in iPhotos does not mean raw data is good - it may also be showing just the embedded jpeg preview, which doesn't count.
    Sandoise wrote:
Lightroom is the third way I've checked
Lightroom is for sure showing the raw (re-rendered) data, so it's the one to use to judge raw data integrity, as read by OS, from card, through your reader...
    Sandoise wrote:
How else can I check the card?
It's "impossible" to tell whether problem is card or reader, unless you try a few different readers. Try a few different ports and a couple different systems too if you can, to rule out system/port/reader possibilities. If raw data is bad no matter which system, which port, which reader you use - it's bad on the card. You still won't know for sure whether the card is bad or the camera is bad, or something else happened.., but bad card is the most likely..

  • 100% previews of raw files - instantly!

    In Irfanview...
Irfanview can present cr* or dng raw files at 100% full-size instantly - literally - even on slow systems. It's probably using some sort of jpeg stand-in, but in any case, it's instant. Adobe might look into how Mr. Skiljan does it, and follow suit, at least for the library module.
If you shoot raw and dump your cards to the hard drive and weed out before bringing the raw into LR, it would be difficult to imagine a more efficient program for weeding out than Irfanview. I can go through 1,000 raw in about an hour, no building previews, no waiting for anything.

It's using just the embedded JPEGs.
I really don't see much difference to LR.  Start importing 1000 raw images set to render embedded or standard previews.  When the first few have popped up a few seconds later, look at the first one in loupe mode large on your screen (without side panels).  According to your 1000-in-1-hour pace, you can deal with that one for 3.6 seconds before moving to the next one.  By the time you have seen the first three and a little over 10 seconds have passed, something like 20 more will be ready.  All 1000 image will be imported well before the end of the hour (probably more like 10-15 minutes, card-reader limited).  Can you really go through them faster than LR imports them?

  • Aperture 3 preview of raw file greenish

Just recently, perhaps after a Digital Camera Raw update, the previews of raw images Aperture 3.2.3 imports are dark with a distinctly green cast.
This happens when I let Aperture import direct from the camera, a Lumix FZ 150 with either of my two Lexar SDXC cards. During import, the thumbnail previews look normal. But during processing they turn green one by one. (The first time I saw this, I turned green. I thought there was something wrong with my camera or new 600x card.)
Double clicking the thumbnail produces a greenish full-sized image, which then changes to a normal image (I assume as Aperture displays the raw image).
If I drag the same raw files from the Finder, Aperture generates the previews normally.
This problem is easy to solve: select the greenish images, hold down option and choose Photos > Generate Previews. This forces Aperture to rebuild the preview.
(I found a few older discussions with similar-sounding problems, but none exactly the same.)

"I assume this also impacts iphoto."
I just tested this again. I saw the problem in Aperture, but could not duplicate it in iPhoto downloading the same images from my Lumix FZ 150.
Again, as dbmoore emphaized above, a solution seems to be to force Aperture to rebuild previews:
hold down option and choose Photos > Generate Previews.
At least that has worked for me every time.
I'm guessing this is someting in Aperture's interaction with the latest Digital Camera Raw.
I'll go way out on a limb and suggest that before the end of June, Apple will have to update Aperture, quite possibly to v 4. At the very least, they'll remove the Mobile Me button and other references to Mobile Me. I bet this problem will just go away by then.
BTW, I've also had a problem with Aperture not deleting photos from my camera card after importing when I ask it to. iPhoto did this as expected.

  • D90 Import Issue - RAW file corrupted

    Hi Everyone,
Since moving from my Nikon D60 to a Nikon D90, I've been experiencing issues importing RAW (NEF) files into Aperture. Most pictures will transfer fine, but some will be corrupted. The corruption occurs regardless of source (from card reader or directly from camera) and is not deterministic (will import photo correctly one time and not the second time around). I have verified that this corruption is at the master level and not preview, since I can see the corruption displaying the image in a different application. I have not run into this problem using applications such as Picasa. Below are links to two example photos of the corruption. Has anyone experienced this too? (I am running Aperture with all updates installed)
    http://home.comcast.net/~brycerocket/apertureissue.jpg
    http://home.comcast.net/~brycerocket/apertureissue2.jpg

Are you perhaps importing directly into Aperture? I feel pretty strongly that card-to-Aperture or camera-to-Aperture handling of original images puts originals at unnecessary risk. I suggest this workflow from an earlier post of mine, first using the Finder (not Aperture) to copy images from CF card to computer hard drive:
    • Remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into a memory card reader. Faster readers and faster cards are preferable.
    • Finder-copy images from memory card to a labeled folder on the intended permanent Masters location hard drive.
    • Eject memory card.
    • Burn backup hard drive or DVD copies of the original images (optional strongly recommended backup step).
    • Eject backup hard drive(s) or DVDs.
    • From within Aperture, import images from the hard drive folder into Aperture selecting "Store files in their current location." This is called "referenced images." During import is the best time to also add keywords, but that is another discussion.
    • Review pix for completeness (e.g. a 500-pic shoot has 500 valid images showing in Aperture).
    • Reformat memory card in camera, and archive originals off site on hard drives and/or on DVDs.
Note that the "eject" steps above are important in order to avoid mistakenly working on removable media/backups.
Also note with a Referenced-Masters Library that use of the "Vault" backup routine backs up the Library only, not the Masters. Masters should be separately backed up, IMO a good thing from a workflow and data security standpoint.

  • Cs3 extended bridge not previewing canon 40d raw files

ok, i just loaded cs3 extended onto my laptop and when i opened bridge the fist time i got a error message that these were not the the right king of file. so my next step was to update ACR to 4.5. i intalled that and put the plugin into files directory. that worked, but now my problem is that bridge will not preview my raw files in bridge. i then went to tool and purge the cache and that also didn't work. so my next step was to update bridge to 2.1.1. so i went back to tool to purge the cache and it still not preview raws in bridge. i converted  several to jpegs and they show up in bridge. i am at a loss of what to do next
    thanks

The ACR plug in has to be in correct folder and only one copy there.  If you copied it there the old copy my be present so delete or rename it.
The ACR plug in does not go in the plug in directory.
It goes in Program Files/COMMON Files/Adobe/plugins/CS3/file formats.   Should be one file here - Camera Raw.8bi
I think when you get this sorted out it should work.
