Preview tiff distortion

Am having a problem with Preview. I process large size film scans in tiff format in Aperture. When I export these images and view them in Preview they appear distorted (huge snowy grain/noise distortion). I have figured out that this is a scaling problem specific to Preview--the distortion goes away if I zoom in to 100%. I am relieved that the data of these files is fine--it seems only to be a rendering issue. But this is still problematic, as these images are often larger than three feet wide at native resolution, so I frequently need to view them smaller than 100%. They display fine in Aperture and Photoshop, but I need to be able to open them for simple viewing purposes without using one of these behemoth applications. Only tiff files are affected, by the way. jpegs display fine. Anyone else have this issue? A solution?

Elsewhere, over the past few years, I have read of a similar situation to
the one you mention regarding the distortion in larger image file types.
Not sure if there is a cure in the newest OS X version.
You may be able to use a freeware or low cost image editing software
to view images and do secondary minor adjustments for other projects.
Have you looked into the fairly nice (esp to those who don't need to own
or use photoshop and other advanced tools all the time) more simple app
by the name of ToyViewer? It may offer a few options outside of Preview's.
• ToyViewer for Mac OS X:

While this does not answer your initial question, it may provide another tool;
such as GraphicConverter has a niche place among other purpose tools.
And it also does some things without the bulk of a larger app, too.

The issue you face with Aperture may be one to address to Apple bug reports;
though it is likely to have been reported. It previously was discussed online. If
there is a lesser preview-capable tool that could do some aspect of the task &
not add more effort into the process, that would be a good thing.
Some digital image creators who make and edit their work, can do fine with an
even lighter software set, and create significant works of large file size in high
quality. Even something as comparatively simple as Color-IT® can do miracles.
Hopefully the issues will have a reasonably fine resolution.
Good luck & happy computing!

  • Unable to Preview TIFF images

I used to be able to in earlier releases of 10.4. By that I mean I could click on the icon for a TIFF file and it would open up in Preview.
Then at some point on, with all the various updates etc, I could no longer preview TIFF files. I did post about this problem a long time ago and the final consensus was to re-install. This I have now done but still cannot preview TIFF files.

I am having a similar problem with some of the TIFF files I created using Microsoft Document Imaging on my Windows-based PC.
I get the same message from Preview ("Couldn't open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn't recognize.") The files will not open in Preview, iPhoto, or Quicktime. I don't have Photoshop.
Some of the files I created WILL open in Preview, some will open with missing pages, and some will not open at all (generating an error message in each of the three programs I have tried).
I would appreciate any ideas....my plan is to go back to Windows and start re-saving the images in another format since I would like to move totally to Mac soon.

  • 2 Questions: 1-Preview TIFFs  2-Typing in a different language

Two completely different questions, but i didn't want to take up unnessisary room on the forum.
    1: Previewing TIFF files.
At the moment, all TIFF file open with Photoshop. However, when i right-click them, and goto Preview, it still opens with Photoshop. So my question is, how do i set TIFF files to still open with Photoshop, but Preview with Windows Fax Viewer?
2: Just a random thought, but is it possible to type in another language in Photoshop? So, say if i used a chinese font, it would assign each key on the keyboard to the Chinese equivilant. Is this possible?
    Thanks,
    Ricky

I've been looking around and it seems impossible now???
Although i didn't find your way of doing it, so i did that, and now whenever i click preview, it asks me if i want to "Download" it?? And if i say yes, it opens in Photoshop again.
Where is the "Recommended programs" option? I dont have it. Are you using XP? or Vista?
    EDIT:
Found out how. As the Application used to preview, you have to put in
    "rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen"1%"
I'm not sure why, but it works. Thanks for the help people!

  • Pdf image good in preview but distorted when printing without preview

Hi all, I have added a graphic to my adobe form and it looks good when I view the pdf. It also prints fine when I open the pdf and then print it. The problem is when the pdf is sent directly to the printer without previewing it, the image will print but the colors will be distorted.
The image was saved as 256 colors bmp and uploaded using SE78.
    Any help is appreciated:). Thanks.

    HI friend,
I think it might be the problem with the printer settings just check that else what it must have happened is some code gets trigerred during the print preview which makes the color to print correctly.
But while sending directly that part of code might not have been executed. Try to debug if possible and see whether its because of this else see the printer settings.
I think this might be the issue there might not be any error from smartform.
Just check the driver program print settings also.
If you still face issues please revert back to me i will help you.
    Thanks,
    Sri Hari.

  • Preview tiff

J'ai un problème avec le preview de mes tiff récemment ?  Je ne vois pas mes previews ni dans le finder ni dans bridge 6 ?
Mac OsX 10.8.5 / Adobe CC up to date

    Bonjour,

  • Preview Icons Distorted.

The last few days my file preview icons on my computer are looking strange. Before they used to be a smaller version of the image, now they look blurry with a black frame around them. The jpeg file itself is fine when I open it in preview or back into PSE, I havn't changed any settings and I am always saving it at the highest resolution. Can anyone tell me whats going on?
This is what they look like now
This is what they should look like.
I recently installed some actions I purchased, maybe that is screwing something up??

Try to adjust the zoom percentage in organizer.
If you are using PSE 11 the zoom option is in the right bottom in organizer.

  • Preview Printing Negative Images - White text and lines on black background

Desperate for help here. After upgrading to Tiger, I have more instances when Preview displays a PDF correctly but prints certain pages with images, such as graphs and technical figures, as negatives, that is, white text and line art on a black background. Is there any way I can fix this? Any advice would be most appreciated.

I was trying to scan from a Lexmark X5250 into Preview so that I could fax a signed document to a company.
When I chose "To be faxed", with Preview TIFF program under 10.4.6 (combo) (PPC), the document appeares in Preview as a white-on-black (negative) in Preview's open window.
A work-around seems to be that one selects "To be printed", then prints from Preview, then selects (in the lower-left corner drop-down-menu) "Fax PDF". (Unfortunately, the modem still won't hang-up properly -- is this because of my ADSL filter on the fax phone-line? ).

  • Distorted Layout Rendering in Adobe Muse

I'm having a some rendering issues while using Muse. The screen shots on the left are how my layout appears while being designed in Muse, and the screen shots on the right are how Muse renders the layout. I've also published a quick test to see if it was just the rendering engine that was distorting the layout, but the published site is also distorted (albiet differently). I'm wondering what if anythng I can do to keep the rendered layout true to the design.
    Thanks.

I have the exact same issue! Can someone please reply to help out with this! I am desigining a site and it looks amazing,  but when I hit preview it distorts all of my hard work and is very frustrating I have no clue how to fix this and have been searching online and checking Adobe forums for help and no luck.

  • Position of eps-files in anchored frame

Hello, I'm sorry but the subject was too large to put it in the subject-field.
    Subject:
position of eps-files (Mac Os 9, Illustrator 9.0, preview tiff black/white)
is not correct after saving eps-files (preview macintosh black/white)
I want to upgrade from Apple Mac 9.0 to PC. All my Framemaker-files (6.0)
must be translated to Framemaker 8.0 (PC-version).
When I open the old Framemaker files, there is only a problem with the
graphics (read: the preview of the graphics in Framemaker 8.0). The result
is: grey boxes in the anchored frames. I thought when I save the old
eps-files (Illustrator 9 for Mac, preview Macintosh Black+white) to
eps-files with TIFF preview, that the problem will be solved. When I open
the framemaker-files on PC, then there are a few graphics correct
(Framemaker displays all the graphics correct on pc). But, there are a lot
of graphics in anchored frames who lost their right coordinates in the
anchored frame (example: the x-position of a graphic is -25 cm en the
y-position of a graphic is 7.9 cm). Result: I cannot see a graphic in the
anchored frame because the coordinates were changed and because their are
outside the frame (their are in the frame, but the graphic is outside the
    border of the anchored frame).
When I use the old eps-files then the position is correct, but there is no
preview available of the graphic in Framemaker 8 (in Framemaker 6.0 for
Mac, there is a preview of the graphic).
Are there people who has this problem too in the past? Who can give me
suggestions to solve this problem or give me other tips to solve this
    problem.

    Hi Jesse
I'm afraid we probably can't help much. I asked our guy and he said:
I thought that issue had more to do with upgrading Adobe Illustrator. When you save an EPS it includes a BoundingBox comment that defines the area of the page that the figure occupies in the artwork:
    %%BoundingBox: LLx LLy URx URy
LLx and LLy are the coordinates of the lower left corner of the figure. URx and URy are the coordinates of the upper right corner of the figure.
When FrameMaker imports an EPS it reads the BoundingBox comment to get the size and position of the figure on the page, and therefore to compute the translation and scaling required in the PostScript output to put the figure where you want it.
The impression I got was that when you updated the EPS figure FrameMaker didn't always refresh the BoundingBox info.
The later version of Illustrator seemed to save files with a different BoundingBox. As a result there was a mis-match between the actual BoundingBox and what FrameMaker recorded.
The solution for us was to simply re-import the figure. I never wrote a script to solve that problem.

  • Query on Gaussian blur

    Hi All,
I have observed one thing. Whenever u add gaussian blur or Radial blur and on dragging slider to change its values, image in the preview appears distorted but still shows effect applying. And on mouse up after the drag, progress bar appears in the bottom and after progress is complete preview becomes smooth. So can anyone tell me
    1. What happens while dragging ? Do they reduce the quality of image? If so how can it be done in our custom effect?
    Thanks and Regards,
    Suma

you could use AEGP_SetCompDownsampleFactor to force the whole comp into lower resolution,
but i don't know what will happen if you do that from a render call.
perhaps you should do that from the USER_CHANGED_PARAM call, but it's getting tricky.
if you want to lower the resolution of your plug-in only,
you could use PF_COPY with a small destination rectangle. (or it's low quality version, which uses a "skip pixel" algorithm)
    it's way quicker than transform_world.
    and lastly,
there is no way for changing the adaptive resolution state on a comp.
neither through the sdk API, nor through java scripting. (at least to my knowledge)

  • How do you view a Windows Powerpoint without buying the entire Mac Office software?

I have Pages and OS Lion. I don't want to buy more software to view powerpoints my teachers post online. When I open them up normally, it opens in Preview, which is fine cause I just want to read them, not edit them. But in Preview it distorts (enlarging the text) on only a few slides but I can't reformat them so I have all the words in view. What should I do.

There are several free work-alike packages to Microsoft office for the Mac:
    Open Office
    Neo Office
these are equivalent to Mac Office, and should open PC versions of files as well.

  • Export large TIFF scans to JPEG results in distorted "banding" effect

built-in JPEG converter, when used to send TIFF files to a .Mac screensaver or when used to export TIFF files to JPEG, results in distorted images on certain kinds of TIFF files, resulting in portions of the image displayed in vertical stripes across the screen... this seems to happen mostly to landscape-oriented photos which were scannned from 8x10 at 48-bit 600dpi (5960x4699) with a file size around 100MB... but does not occur on similar scans in portrait mode (4699x5899)... indicating a possible horizontal resolution limit around 5000?
tested same files in GraphicConverter, resulting in output without this problem

I Additionally, when I convert the file using the save as command in Preview, I can convert it into a jpeg or jpeg2000 and it is much smaller (71GB for example), but the same anomalous behavior occurs when I finish editing the file and quit iPhoto- - when I double click the thumbnail, the full sized image appears briefly and then disappears. leaving in its place a completely black window. I would be most appreciative of any insights.
    Thanks.

  • Tiff export distortion. Help!!

I have been trying to export tiffs (16-bit, original size) in Aperture (3.0.3), but they come out looking terrible. These are tiff imports of film scans. They look great in Aperture, but when I export them and open them in preview they are distorted, grainy, huge "snowy" grain. Exported as jpegs they look fine--just tiffs seem to be effected. And this seems to be a recent problem. I have successfully exported tiffs since upgrading to 3. The only thing different here is that these files have been processed with noise ninja. Could this be the issue? If yes, then why are only tiffs affected. Like I say, jpegs still look fine. And why do they display fine in Aperture?
    Any help would be appreciated!

An update. This seems to be an issue with how Preview scales large images. The images in question are film scans that are something like 3.5 feet wide at native resolution. When I zoom in to 100% the distortion goes away. It is only when scaled smaller than 100% that the distortion is present. This is reassuring, but still problematic, as I obviously cannot always view these images full size. Anyone else run into this problem? Any suggestions?

  • PDF simple vectors look OK in Preview, distorted in Adobe Reader?

I am working on a document in Illustrator CS5 on Mac OS 10.5.8. The doc is meant to be viewed primarily through e-mail, possibly printed to a desktop printer.
I am replacing certain letterforms with vector objects – basically, I'm using simple rectangles to substitute for "I"s with unwanted serifs, in a small amount of headline text. When I Save As PDF, the resultant document looks great in Preview, but when viewed in Adobe Reader 10 (most likely what this will be viewed on at the receiving end), those uniform copy-pasted rectangles display ugly variations in height, width and alignment with the rest of the text. I have no idea why this is happening.
Further possibly relevant info: I have converted the rest of this headline text to outlines so as to apply an "Offset Path". The other text all stays very visually consistent between .ai and .pdf formats. It is only these makeshift "I"s that are distorted.
    Please advise!

Make at least one extra anchor point in each of those rectangles.
