Preview under Lion. I am experiencing a different issue to most reported here.
Preview is functional but not e.g. Remove Image from Background.
From the Select button the drop down list of facilities is missing.
The Help files state that this is where it should be.
So you can Select or select!
Reported this via the Feedback system.
Since when was it mandatory to type in your username, first time it has been requested of me.
Any ideas apart from revert to my copy of SL and it’s version of Preview, fortunately still available to me courtesy of a Clone.
All input will be most welcome.
i had one mac and spilt water on it, the motherboard fried so i had to buy a used one...being in school and all. it is a MC375lla

i do not have a backup of it, so i am thinking about replacing my old hard drive from the water damaged into this one, not even sure if that would work, but it did not seem to be damaged, as i recovered all the files i wanted off of it to put onto this mbp
the previous owner didnt have it set to boot, they had all their settings left on it and tried to edit all the names on it, had a bunch of server info and printers etc crap on it. i do not believe he edited the terminal system though--he doesnt seem to terribly bright(if thats possible)
tbh i hate lion compared to the old one i had, this one has so many more issues-overheating,fan noise, cd dvd noise
if you need screenshots or data of anything else as away
[problem is i do not want to start from scratch if there is a chance of fixing it, this one did not come with disks or anything like my first. so i dont even know if i could, and how it sets now i am basically starting from scratch, because now all my apps are reset but working, i am hoping to get my data back somehow though, i lost all of my bookmarks and editing all my apps and setting again would be a pain

How do I change the default save location for Preview under Lion?
I have to modify about 200 PDFs.
When I make a duplicate of a PDF in Preview it always suggests saving it on the desktop. Instead I would like it to ask me if I want to save it either where the original file is, or where I saved something last.
Note that Default Folder X doesn't yet work with Preview. And even then it wouldn't solve my problem. What I meant is turn off Documents and Data in iCloud in OS X. Keep it on on your iOS devices. iCloud will sync documents between the iOS devices and make them available on the iCloud web site, but it won't mess up iWorks' open and save dialog boxes. It also won't assume that you want all your documents in iCloud, which I think is undesirable anyway.
Keep iOS and OS X separate, and use the web site to move files between the two as necessary.
iOS iWork is different from OS X iWork. There are fewer fonts on an iOS device. iOS iWork programs have slightly different feature sets than OS X iWork programs, and the file formats are different. iCloud automatically converts the file format when necessary, but if you make a habit of saving things directly to iCloud, you are limited to the lowest common denominator between the two versions of iWorks. So why would anyone want iWork on the Mac to open and save documents on iCloud by default?
If you want to store files in the cloud and sync them on your Macs, SugarSync is a much better solution. It lets you choose your sync folders, it doesn't make you reorganize your files, it lets you sync all file types, it doesn't convert files to a different format and back, and it stores everything in the cloud, too. Just the simle act of saving a file backs it up and syncs it. I wouldn't live without it. iCloud is best with iTunes purchases and synchronizing Mac settings and iOS files; I woudln't live without it. The two make an unbeatable combination. -
Max screen resolution different under lion?
okay, is it just me, or does a 4 year old 20" imac have a smaller max resolution under lion than it did before? it's kind of hard to tell if everything is bigger now, but without doubt all the icons on my desktop are a LOT bigger than they were before the upgrade. of course, i went into system prefs - displays and the resolution is set at 1680 x 1050, which is the max choice. i just can't remember what it was set at before.
Screen resolutions are determined by your graphics hardware, not Lion per se. However, the display settings were changed on my Mac mini for the HDMI port after the Lion upgrade, and it keeps resizing all of my windows for minimum resolution on startup, so I'd venture to say that Lion has a few bugs regarding screen resolution that are in need of bug-fix updates.

No preview displayed in Aperture and Preview after Lion "upgrade"
Hi everyone,
something (well, maybe many things) has been blown by Lion...I'm only just trying to figure out what exactly is.
Generally the system performs well but I have a big issue with previews within Aperture 3 and in Preview/Quicklook itself.
I'm testing Lion onto a late 2009 unibody macbookpro 13", 2.0 ghz, 8gb Ram; Aperture library is managed, around 100gb, all files are from Canon 30D and 350D, plus some jpegs and videos from a Powershot A620 (I didn't test the videos imported in Aperture yet, in SnowLeopard everything was fine).
In Aperture 3 (I have upgraded to 3.1.3 before installing Lion) my Canon 30D files are displayed correctly both in browser and viewer...Canon 350D files (raw images) aren't...well, the small thumbnail in the browser view is looking fine but when I double click to display the large image..it suddenly disappear! gray or black background, no image at all...back to browser view and the small thumbnail correctly display the image.
So i tried to regenerate the preview...nothing, same behaviour...if I press P for quick preview nothing is displayed, I get nothing even if I press M for master image.
Ok, I said...let's try this...I decide to export a photo, as master, onto the desktop...fine, the image icon is good, correctly displaying the image thumbnail...if I select it and press the spacebar i obtain ...absolutely nothing,a gray window that should be my image.
This happens also for the 30D files when I export them ...within Aperture they're good.
I also tried to export a version (jpeg)...all I obtain is a totally black jpeg.
Seems that Preview is not working anymore or uncapable to display any raw format, only jpegs are correctly displayed, I mean original jpeg shot.
I went through all the basic library maintenance for Aperture, repaired system permission before and after Lion installation...nothing changes.
Anyone experiencing a similar behaviour under Lion? Is Preview not working only in my system? Any suggestion?
I'm trying to find something to fix this...I have Time machine backups, Aperture vault backups so reverting back to SL is only a matter of patience and time...but I would like to stick with Lion and keep testing.
Any help or suggestion will be appreciated...I'm also searching for similiar behaviour (mostly for the problem with Preview) in the Lion OSX forum, this is heavily affecting Aperture.
Best regards,
AlbertoI found a solution that worked for me. Seems like my firewall did not accept the afp connection permissions anymore after installing lion... Since everything worked well turning off the firewall.
So if you don't want to keep your firewall disactivated here is what worked for me:
- Leave your firewall activated.
- Turn OFF afp file sharing in the sistem prefs
- Restart your Machine
- Turn ON afp file sharing
- You should now get a message if you want to accept afp connections...
- click YES
Thats it... Everything fine on my network now. -
How to work with Preview in Lion (autosave, etc)
Just installed Lion and am tweaking and adjusting.
Run headlong into Autosave/Versioning with Preview. Was very used to using preview to quickly look at and play with adjustments to images (but used Photoshop for heavy lifting). Most of the time, I discarded any adjustments that I made in Preview (i.e. I didn't save them).
Was surprised that Lion autosaves anything that I do to an image in Preview. So, how does one work in this environment. Avoid Preview? Always do the extra step of reverting to an older image before closing Preview (is it obvious which version to revert to?)? Something else? I don't see a way to turn autosave off. On first blush, this seems like a Misfeature. Not just for Preview, but for many things. Is no longer safe to just play because all changes are being saved.
I hope that I'm missing something that can bring back a more explicit workflow.
I also noticed that Preview is really sucking up memory. I opened a couple of images (small ones, < 1MB). After playing for a while, the Preview app used almost all of the available 10GB of memory on my system (the system became really sluggish). Is this a side effect of versioning? I quit and restarted Preview and it freed up memory.Wondering how general the above advice is. Only for preview, or all programs? Time will tell on how well this feature works; certainly different as compared to other OS's that I might use during the day.
In this case, I only opned a couple of small photos and made a handful of changes. So, I don't know where all the memory went. I'll be watchful.
I've now unchecked "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps". But, note that this doesn't affect audosaving.
Feels like initial startup of apps (incl. preview) is a bit sluggish under Lion. Perhaps due to checking saved state (a guess).

Epson 3880 no longer prints under Lion
My Epson 3880 printer was working well under Snow Leopard but after updating to Lion on my MacBook Pro a few months ago I haven't yet been able to get the printing to work. The printer is connected directly via USB. If I unplug the printer from my MacBook Pro and plug it into my MacPro then it works normally. I have tried deleting the printer and reloading it. Software Update is all up to date. 10.7.3. I didn't get any help whatsoever from Epson.
I have tried printing from a variety of applications (FileMaker Pro, TextEdit, Adobe Reader, Photoshop etc.) but always the same problem. When I try to print, things seem to go normally until I press "print". That is, the printer dialogue box comes up normally and I can select the printer, paper size, options, etc. However, the print dialogue box looks different, simpler with less options. I can't tell if this is normal under Lion or if it indicates something wrong with the printer driver.
The printer shows up as "connected". After I press "print" the progress box that usually appears just flashes on very briefly and disappears. Normally this box shows for at least a few seconds. Then, when nothing happens, I check the printer monitor icon in the dock. There is a red number showing a new page is ready to print. But nothing happens. On the printer monitor box it shows "Printer Ready" but down in the jobs list it shows the name of the document waiting to be printed and under "status" is says "error". If I click "Resume" the status changes to "printing" then I get a couple of very brief messages - too fast to read, and then they disappear and status returns to "error".
If I click "job info" I get a bunch of stuff but this message looks like the important one "/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter/Filter/pdftopdf.app/Contents/MacOS/pdfto pdf failed".
I can connect to the Epson 3880 when it is wired to the MacPro as a network printer and I can print but I can't seem to get the same printer options selections. I can get the basic ones but not the important ones for this printer - just generic ones.
Does anobody have any suggestions for me to try. I have read through a number of other printer related issues with Lion but most are with network printing or wireless printing.Brian Townsend wrote:
Well, I deleted the printer and the Epson printer files and restarted. Then I plugged in the Epson 3880 printer and added it in the print & scan box. It said I neededd software to sue this printer so I went to Software Update but no Epson software appeared on the list. I installed the latest driver from Epson.
You did not state but after you installed the latest driver from Epson, did you go back to Print & Scan and delete all instance of the Epson printer and the add the printer. The Epson 3880 is "on", yes?
On a new MB Pro with OS 10.7.4, the latest Epson SPro 3880 driver and the printer on... In Print & Scan, I can click and hold down the + button and the pop down menu shows an option to select the nearby printer EpsonStylusPro3880-1EAD55 to add. If I choose Add other Printer or Scanner, the Add Printer window opens and the Default tab lists EpsonStylusPro3880-1EAD55 as Bonjour and EpsonStylusPro3880-1EAD55 (IP) as EPSON TCPIP. The latter is because I set the printer with a static IP address. I print to the Epson 3880 via WiFi.
Anyway, if you try adding the printer and "Print Using" shows Generic PostScript Printer, click on that itself and choose "Select Printer Software..." from the drop down menu. A Printer Software window will open. Find the Epson 3880 in that list. If it is not there, go back and choose "Other". On my computer the path to the Epson 3880 PPD is: HD/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/EPSON Spson Stylus Pro 3880.gz
When I try to print, I select the printer from the printer list and a printer dialogue box comes up, but not the normal Epson one. It was a simplified generic printer dialogue box lacking the usual advanced Espon printer features, such as seeing if photo black or matte black ink is selected. So it still doesn't work. Any other ideas?
Either that's the window for Generic PostScript or if it is for the Epson printer, at the bottom there is a button "Show Details" (to the right of the PDF button). If the details show, that button will show as "Hide Details."
Hope this helps. -
ITunes Home Sharing No Longer Working Under Lion
Home Sharing is no longer working between Lion and my Apple TV or iPhone. I am able to watch Netflix through my Apple TV (2nd Gen) so I do have connectivity. I have restarted both devices, and updated iTunes to 10.4. Under "Advanced" in iTunes, Home Sharing is turned on. In Preferences in iTunes under Sharing, it says Status: On, no users connected, even though my Apple TV is connected to the network.
Is this problem isolated, or are others experiencing the same issue?I'm up and running. Spoke with Apple and they had me go to : preferences, network and create a new location. That seems to have reset something. I had to reset all my devices back to my main network that had stopped working. The guest network will not let Home Sharing work, only the main network.
Others have been able to use Home Sharing without clicking "Done" after typing in their password. After you click "Done" the Shared disappears in iTunes.

How can I maximise windows under Lion?
OK, I realise that this is a trivial question that seems to have been answered several times for previous incarnations of OS X, but I thought I'd read somewhere the the behaviour of the green triffic light buttong had changed under Lion, so that it provide Maximise capability. Ufortunately, from what I cna see, it hasn't :-(
It cycles through various window sizes, and will get close to the maximise function, but only if you have already manually set the size using the mouse (or touch pad).
What I'm realy looking for is a feature that will unconditionally set the window to its maximum possible size - does this exist?
Note that I do not want the full screen facility, which I know about. I dislike this because it hides too much of the application away, such as the menu.
I may be being unreasonable, but this doesn't sound like too much to ask.
Note that this request is partly for myself, but mainly for my wife who has just transferred to OS X from Windows. If Apple put as much effort into implemeeitng as they've put int justifying *not* impleemmting it then the world would be a better (and different) place.
Apple chose - a LOOONG time ago - to put that power in the hands of developers. If you develop an app, you can choose how the maximize button works for your app. This makes the maximize button far more intelligent and useful, if developers take the trouble to do so, since the window can then maximize to display the most content possible instead of uselessly covering the entire screen when the content is only a fraction of that area. Personally, I think Apple made the right choice, as I almost never want one window to cover the entire screen, but if you disagree, just use Right Zoom. Or full screen mode. -
I'm running iPhoto '09 (8.1.2) under Lion (10.7.2). I've been trying to make a calendar, but iPhoto seems to have issues. I started by duplicating a calendar from last year and trying to apply a new theme. This causes iPhoto to become unresponsive until I click on a different calendar in the 'Keepsakes' list on the left panel. Additionally, adding photos to the project often doesn't work - I drag photos to the project but they don't appear in the photo list when I open the project.
Does iPhoto '09 have any limitations under Lion? I would upgrade to iPhoto '11 but the calendar theme choice is much more limited than iPhoto '09.
thanks!
DanNo there are no specific issues with iPhoto 09 and 10.7
Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101. -
Will FCS 3 work under lion?
Hi (Bonjour)!
I'm currently in the move for renewing my aging LNE station. I already own an unopened FCS 3 box but looking for a new mac. I 'm pretty cold with the new FCP X .
Anyone knows if Final Cut Studio 3 will works under the upcoming OS X Lion? And with the anticipated new desktop Mac Pro?
Thank you.
Michel BoissonneaultHi Michel,
I'm using it with OSX Lion right now on a Developers GoldMaster. The good thing is that Lion is not that much different under the hood to SnowL. It's got some great new features, my fav's being Versions and Resume. But these don't affect the day to day running adversely. Apps will have to be rewritten to utilise some of the features (so FCS3 won't get a look-in then).
So far I've not had issues with any of my main software including the Adobe CS5.5 suite, FCS3, PFMatchit, Parallels, Maya, Nuke, all working as they should - some much better!
Apple have just asked developers to start submitting their Lion apps so it will probably see a release very shortly. Next tuesday if they follow tradition. If you have 3rd party hardware for FCS or Logic you might want to wait until drivers have been released though. My NVidias work fine but if you use ATTO, AJA or Blackmagic cards you are best checking with these developers before upgrading to Lion.
All the best

Why does print function in Preview with Lion OS not work?
Since upgrading to Lion, the print functionality on Preview does not work. When you select Print, the rainbow wheel of misfortune appears and I have to force quit Preview after a while. The print window does not even appear to select a printer (I have multiple print drivers and drivers installed).
All other aplications print nornally as before the upgade.Hi,
After upgrading the EPSON drivers to version 2.8 under Lion, I now have an issue when printing PDF's with preview. Some text will not be printed, which is very odd. I have an Epson ALC2800 connected via ethernet, and I can successfully print the same documents from my windows 7 PC, or even from Acrobat reader on my MBP.
So, it seems that the issue is present in Preview, or at the least in the way, it prints. I hope someone can help me with this, because I use preview all the time (and I quite like the functions which are not present in Acrobat Reader)
thanks in advance,

Helvetica Neue Bold doesn't render spaces in Photoshop CS4 under Lion
PS CS4 seems to work great (albeit slightly slower) under Lion. However, I have noticed one glitch that is slightly annoying.
The Helvetica Neue font on the system renders normally except for the Bold variant, which doesn't seem to render any spaces. Even opening an existing PSD that uses Helvetica Neue will render the font the same way. In fact, there's a flash where it's normal but then all the spaces suddenly disappear.
Anyone else experienced this or know of a solution?
Thanks
ACYes, I'm aware there are always issues - to Adobe's credit, there weren't a whole lot this time around.
I think I was surprised that you acted, in a one-line (also flippant) response, that we were crazy for upgrading our OS "untested". There are lots of other apps that I use in my daily workflow that had already been upgraded to work with Lion, and I'm not about to partition my computer so I can run Adobe's products which, as I was under the impression (perhaps mistakenly), they had already internally tested to ensure compatibility.
Perhaps you're over-estimating my urgency. It's one variant of one font, the only issue I've found running CS4 on Lion. It's not a "big roadblock," and my OS + PS is completely functional otherwise. That said, it is a bug with only Adobe products so I felt it was appropriate for me to report here, in the Adobe forums. Coincidentally, I've also reported it at Photoshop.com's Photoshop support forum, where hopefully it may also be seen. Yes, it might take days or weeks... but that's the nature of a bug and fix.
So basically, I'll wait for the fix. Thanks anyway. -
2011 MBP with 8GB of RAM, generally slow under Lion, possibly thrashing
I have a 17" 2011 MBP with 8GB of RAM and the fastest CPU available at the time. It came with Snow Leopard, and it was really fast with basically everything I threw at it.
Since the upgrade to Lion, it has a general tendency to get really unresponsive. My workload hasn't fundamentally changed. Rather than just hope it's bugs in Lion that will get fixed, I'd like to see if anyone can advise me on things I might investigate, either to fix things myself, or to be more intelligent about identifying bugs I can report.
One thing I notice is that Time Machine backups will bring the system to its knees. Everything will be going along just fine, and then TM will kick on, and all my apps will stop responding. Once TM has finished, things will slowly come back to normal. There's a lot of disk activity, which I have assumed was swapping. Another thing that causes trouble is that mds (and a whole bunch of mdsworkers) will frequently kick on, and will slow down the system.
CPU load is always quite low, but free memory is always very low. (However, in some OS's Free Memory is misleading, because a lot of disk blocks are cached in RAM, so it's not really "used" either..)
What I can't really distinguish for sure is if the system is slow because of swapping/thrashing (which is what I assume) or if it's slowed down for some other reason related to disk activity.
Here are the apps I typically run:
- NetBeans (which is a pig, taking up over 1GB or real memory)
- Safari (which is also a pig, often taking up more than 1GB between the main Safari process and the Web Content process)
- Sometimes Parallels (2GB for the VM, and probably another 1GB for other stuff, because it's also a pig)
- kernel_task typically reports taking up over 1GB of real memory
- WindowServer also reports using 280MB
- various other small apps like Mail, NetNewsWire, Preview, Terminal, Adium, Smultron, Colloquy, none of which use much memory
I got the 8GB, because I knew I was going to use a lot of memory for stuff, and it was great under Snow Leopard. But with Lion, it just doesn't seem to be enough. Even with all of those huge processes, I can't believe that their working sets are really as big as their virtual and physical memory footprints seem to be. I mean it's not unusual for a process to have 2GB of virtual space but only a few 100MB of real memory, and some of that is shared object libraries, where the same physical memory is mapped into multiple processes. (Have shared object libraries stopped being physically shared under Lion?)
Are other people having similar trouble? Any suggested remedies? Any suggestions on how to investigate so I can see if there are any actual bugs?
I would like to understand why my system went from zippy to slow after I upgraded to Lion. Actually, quite a few things have broken. Time Machine has become a pig, bluetooth doesn't work reliably anymore, airport doesn't connect reliably anymore, and lots of little annoying bugs. But this is common for early point releases of new OS's, so I can't complain too much. But for Lion to have really regressed in memory management is definitely not good.Safari, for what ever reason, has become a huge memory
pig. The longer you are using it the more memory it
gobbles up.
In Activity Monitor, check the Page outs and Swapped used.
This will tell you how much memory swapping is going on.
As for Time Machine, you may want to set your Parallels
HD image not to get backed up by Time Machine. May
help since it is a huge collection of files. But there have been
issues reported with Time Machine and Lion. I don't
use it myself and opt for the cloning methodology and
seperate data backup strategy. Also, in Spotlight
preferences under the Privacy Tab, I have added
my Windows VM folders, for same reason. Unless you really
need to find something on the windows VM volumes when you
don't have the Windows VM active, it just eats up alot
of disk access time.
For solving airport issues check this article:
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20117247-263/fixing-airport-problems-in-os- x/?tag=mncol;txt
For Bluetooth devices, try removing them, and have them rediscovered if you
can.
Hopefully, this gives you a start on cleaning things up. -
when I open various software, under Lion, more than one document opens. Issue with multipe software (Word, Excel, Preview, Quicktime, etc. Do you know how to solve?
This is a new feature called 'resume' that you resume from where you left off.
There is a way to turn it off, go to system preferences>general>uncheck restore windows -
