Preview weirdness...

Preview has always been quirky for me. Manipulating PDF documents with Preview is simply tedious and unpredictable. I was simply trying to add a page to a PDF document in Preview.
Opened two PDF's in Preview. Tried to drag one page thumbnail from one document to the other. One of two things happens: either it just does nothing (page count doesn't change, no visual indication of anything) or the thumbnails on the destination document separate as if it is going to insert the page, but it doesn't, leaving a gap in between the pages (document does not show edited).
In Console every time a drag is attempted, the following is logged:

Same PDF's cause same errors on multiple Yosemite Macs. I have checked the permissions (under the security inspector) and it shows that I have full rights for both documents, source and destination.
So I tried a couple of different PDF's, and they worked fine. So the questions are:
1. Is it possible that my PDF's are corrupt, even though there is no indication whatsoever on the files themselves that this might be the case?
2. It looks like the PDF author was Microsoft Word. I thought PDF's were PDF's were PDF's. Is there a way to open them, then save them out as something that Preview might like better?

thanks for your reply; however, there is no doubt that Yosemite caused issues.
1) I've used Preview literally dozens per day for as long as Preview has been around.
2) I always markup, edit, combine, subtract, etc. using Preview on any/all PDF files without issue.
3) Once Yosemite was installed it was VERY clear Apple made changes to Preview:
3a) Previous version would allow you to specifically place where you wanted a Text box, or Square or arrow, etc. Once Yosemite was installed the updated Preview software now "automatically" places the Text Box, Arrow, or any other Object selected in the Center of the designated Page within the PDF Preview file. As mentioned, previously, I could select Arrow and then Drag where I wanted it. Now, I click on Arrow and it puts a pre-determined Arrow in the middle of page and now I have to select it, and drag it to where I want it and then resize. Numerous steps that the pre-Yosemite version didn't require.
4) As mentioned earlier, pre-Yosemite I could drag/drop files between PDFs - now, 99% of the time it won't let me combine documents if one of them has had edits (it appears). Even if edits were done by a third party and then emailed to me.
I realize you've tried it on "15 macs" but it's very clear that as of Yosemite, Apple "changed/tweeked" Preview since it has numerous changed features that weren't there previously. Very frustrating.
Thankfully, I just learned from above that in the app store is PDF Reader and it works to combine documents so at least I can move forward. I love(d) Preview but since the Yosemite Preview changes, it's very cumbersome for many reasons.

No thumbnail images in icons with Preview since reinstall of Tiger

Since a HDD crash and reinstall of Tiger at Apple Store with updates to 10.4.11, Preview.app is now NOT making image thumbnails but only shows an icon with the Preview logo and file type, ie. JPEG, PNG.
Also in Folders most images, but not all, are not showing up as they used to with miniature images.
This makes it very hard to tell what the image is merely with a number for the filename.
I tried deleting the plist but that didn't help. Anyone have any suggestions how to get real thumbnails back?

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried it several times to no avail and noticed that an older version of Preview which had been archived on an external drive was 13.2 MB on disk while the one which the Apple Store put onto the new hard drive was only 3 MB, even though they are both v3.0.9 (build 409) I've tried both and there doesn't appear to be any difference in functionality.
Still no thumbnails except on a few .jpgs. They do work from iPhoto if they are normal .jpg pictures if I drag the pic to the desktop from the iPhoto Library, but not panoramas which have been stitched, photos which have been cropped, modified or .gif or .tiff.
Guess we'll just have to keep looking for the answer to why they won't show up all the time.

Muse adding weird space

I'm not sue what I did, but all of a sudden Muse has started adding an extra space. I attached an image of what the site is supposed to look like. All the different sections butt against each other. For some reason under 'my work' the blue gets cut off short and there is a large weird space before the 'about me' section. I can send my file if I need to. Please help!

It previews differently in Muse than it does in Firefox. The navy blue background is now just a thin line, but the 'about me' section is in the right place. See attched...
It was working just fine and all of a sudden it started previewing weird. I'm thinking I accidentally changed something without realizing it.

Weird squiggles showing up in preview/published version but not on the stage

When I preview or publish my animation, these weird lines show up that aren't on the stage. There's no hidden layers, and I can't figure out how to stop them from appearing. I'm using CS5 on Windows 7
The squiggles are near "Watt"-
But they don't show up-
Any help would be appreciated!

It doesn't look like squiggles/noise, but moreso like pieces of drawings that are not attached to anything. Try to narrow down the location of the extra artwork, by changing one layer at a time to be a guide layer. As son as you see them disappear you should know which layer to focus your attention on.

Weird characters displayed on page instead of file download/preview

Hi everyone,
I have a download file procedure as per the instructions on the download.oracle.com page
The download of the files worked just fine (or better say they were previewed in a new page) but recently a new schema has been added to the workspace so we can start the testings from the scratch.
I modified the schema name where needed, but not the download page acts kinda weird, as instead of the file preview, I get a long page full of:

PS: Some updates...I tried it in IE as well (I use FF when working with applications) and funny enough the photos and documents get displayed/the download box shows up.
But, all the files have the name f. f.pdf, f.jpeg etc
I tried calling the dl_image procedure in the url (currently I call a new page where I pass the file id to an application id and then I call the above procedure in a pl/sql block):

Weird dots in QuickTime and Preview. Possibly ColoeSync Need Help

I have had for some time now these weird spots in QuickTime and Preview files when viewing them only. They only appear when looking at them with these apps. Viewing pictures in PhotoShop don't recreate the problem. I suspect it's related to ColorSync, but I have no idea what to try. I removed the profiles from My Drive/Library/ColorSync/Profiles and rebooted. The problem is still there.
Printing or viewing these files in other apps don't exhibit the problem so the files are fine. It's just displaying them with QuickTime & Preview that cause problems.
I'm so sick of this and would really like to get it fixed. Could anyone please offer a suggestion? I'd be extremely appreciative. Thanks in advance!

Weird colours with QuickTime sources, broken preview renders & crash at exit (CS4)

I have a strange problem in Premiere Pro CS4: Allmost all QuickTime MOV that I put in the timeline show weird, broken colours. At first I thought this was a problem with a specific codec, but I have now tried several codecs and pretty much every one shows up equally broken. The only codec that seems to work fine is the one that my Canon EOS 550D produces (1080p, H.264 I believe), but that one does not play smoothly (not that I would expect it to do on my machine). Strangely, H.264 in lower resolutions fails again. Other containers seem to be unaffected. Here is a screenshot of the effect:
Also, my preview renders (when rendering the effecs on the timeline) are similarly broken. They behave a bit erratically. Sometimes they are just black, showing nothing and sometimes they show a still frame of one of the previously viewed videos. Colours are messed up in a similar way, so I suspect a connection. Also, upon exiting Premiere, it usually crashes. This is less of a problem, but still very weird behaviour.
Any ideas how I could solve this?
Infos about my system which might be of relevance:
Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 (education version)
Windows Vista 32bit (SP2, all current updates installed)
4GB RAM
Intel Core2 Duo
ATI X1300 Pro 256MB (with newest available driver)
QuickTime 7.6.6
The system has been freshly installed (from factory image - hence the older OS) so no malware or anything similar should mess anything up. Only software installed except the Creative Suite is Google Chrome.
On my laptop (Win7 64bit, Intel i5, no separate graphics card, same QT version) none of these problems appear.

I think I found the solution. Some further digging revealed that I did not have as previously assumed the latest driver for my graphics card installed. I was mislead because the manufacturer (Dell) did provide some updates, but not all of them (none in the past two years to be exact). I grabbed the newest driver kit from the ATI website and installed it. Strangely, the installer produced several errors and I get another error message at startup, but I think only the control software was affected and not the driver itself.
After some first tests, QuickTime movies behave as expected, the preview renders are working again and the crashes on exit are also gone. Yay!
Strange how much trouble a driver which is otherwise working perfectly can cause.

Mission Control/Dash Board are freeze then cause logout. Picture preview with a lot of Weird Pixel (Not dead pixel).

i cannot use my mission control, laging and freeze, then cuase the system logout. It is same as my DashBoard.
Additional problem is there a lot weird pixel (dot or spot) on my picture when i preview the picture. I had try reset SMC and PRAM, but the probelm still exist.

Weird... mini preview image

This is weird... suddenly in my iChat video preview, I can only get a postage stamp sized image. It's active, but small. With black borders filling the rest of the frame.
Anybody know what this could be?
I searched it and nothing came up. I've tried zapping the PRAM and a PMU reset.
I do have Chax and ChatFX installed. But this worked before and suddenly has stopped, even though I'm not aware of any changes. All software updates are current too.
The timing is terrible... we just had a baby and the grandparents are overseas and desperate for a live introduction!

It gets weirder yet...
This is a separate iSight, used with an Alubook.
Yet, on this same machine, I've tested it with Photobooth and other video programs on my computer. It's situation normal. Works fine. The green light on the camera goes on, the image is full sized, and it takes a decent picture.
But with iChatAV, either in the video preview window from the menu or from just clicking on the video icon, no go.
What's more, when I open iChat with the camera attached, I get no green light... even though my chat icon switches to video... and still, even after deleting plist files, the video image I see remains small.
One thing I did remember... between now and the last time I used the iSight (more than a week ago) I had installed Skype for video. Maybe I should delete that? I'll give it a try.

Very weird! Preview doesn't open all the selected items!

I transferred 120 photos from my digital camera to a new folder.
Then I selected them all and double-clicked, causing them to open under Preview.
But there are gaps in what opens!
For example, none of the photos between filenames P1030899 and P1030955 open up!
Yet if I select the photo files in that range separately and double-click on them they open up just fine!
Why won't all the photos open up when selecting 120 at once?!
I never noticed any such phenomenon with my old PB...

OK. After doing some tests with Apple Support the problem turns out to be different, and perhaps more minor than I thought. But I would very much like other people here to test this as well!
The images are, in fact, all loading by Preview. But what happens is the first couple load, then a bunch are skipped, then others load then the ones that didn't load before are loaded.
So what Preview is showing after they are all loaded is not the images in order of filename, but the images in load order.
If you control-click on any image and then click the "sort by name" option (even though that option was already selected) then the images immediately re-order themselves.
So it is more a Preview sorting bug that it doesn't re-sort itself after loading all the images.
I guess this never happened on my older PB because of the timings involved the load order was always the same as the file order alphabetically.
What I would like to know is - can other people duplicate this as well?
If you have a folder with, say, 200 or so image files in it, please "select all" and double-click. This will open all the images in Preview.
Do all the images display in order immediately? Or is it like me where the first few display in order, then there is a gap of some number of images, then later images show up then your "missing" issues show up later. (You can resort after they are all loaded of course.)

Weird Problem! Previews in Finder okay, won't open in QT!!

This has really got me stuffed! I have a few video files which preview fine in Mac OS X's Finder in column view or when doing a Get Info, but when I double click on them or try to open them from within Quicktime, I get the following error message:
Quicktime cannot open the file: "Clip 06" an unknown error occured (-199).
This happens with a number of files. I'm using Quicktme 7.0.2.
Any suggestions?

I'm really sorry you may have lost some files.
In the "old days" (when hard drive space was a premium) it was the default settings of most video editing software to create a "reference" file.
This file only "pointed" to the data used in the file's creation and didn't create a "new" file. It only "pointed" to the new files (like an alias only points to the original).
When you remove the original "source" (deleting the original) there is no way any software can reconstruct the file.
The default settings in most software now doesn't create a "reference". But you must pay attention to the save dialog window.

Weird Color in preview monitor

I recently started a new session in Color and found that my preview window (above the scopes) is not displaying a standard video image but what appears to be false color or something like it. I am using Color with a Matrox MXO (and have for several other projects without this issue) so I can see the proper image on my second display. But this is a little annoying. Anyone ever see anything like this or know what I might be doing wrong? 1) Is any other app using the same output card? I've had some strange behavior (not this, exactly) when both FCP and Color are open and trying to access the same output. If you toggle the preview display to "None" and back does that help?
2) I'm guessing if you restart the computer and reopen the project this still happens. If you send another sequence to Color does it have the same problem?

Weird video freeze / Preview Blacking out?

Hi everyone I am just wondering if any of you ever got lockups from videos? Sometimes if i just highlight a video clip (browsing in column view) and my MBP would just freeze up while generating the prview on the right side! Like complete freeze and it happened few times already really annoying. What could be the cause of this could it be video card?
Also I read comics in Preview in slideshow mode (full screen) and sometimes after a while when changing from 1 pic to the next the screen would stay black and i get the "beach ball" =P I can't do anything to get out of it even though I could still hit the POWER button and select SHUTDOWN but nothing happens after that and then I can't bring up the SHUTDOWN menu any more...could this b video card issue as well?? This is kinda like freezing but not really...had to force power off =(

Library. Image Preview Quality & weird behaviour.

Hi. I'll try to explain this the best I can.
I never noticed this with Lightroom 2.4 ... I don't know if this has always happend but went unnoticed or is just happening after Lightroom 3 was installed.
You browse the library, the thumbnails, as usual and the first time you click a thumbnail you get a full screen preview, wich quality I suppose is controlled by the 'standard preview quality' setting.
Once in full screen, click and you get the 1:1 preview (or any other zoom factor, but I chose 1:1). This one is generated previously or as needed.
I have the standard preview setting at maximum size, maximum quality.
When I click on a thumbnail to open the full screen preview I get this preview (just cropped and zoomed part to explain what I'm seeing) :
Notice the jagged lines everywhere ? It's noticiable at normal full screen as somewhat deformed noses, eyes, etc. Here I enlarged it to make it even more evident.
Well ... then I click to get 1:1 zoom, wich prompts lightroom to generate a 1:1 preview. Once done, I click back to the normal full screen preview. Now, this is the image I see :
See the change ? Now is softer, there's no jagged lines. No deformed eyes, just a good an clean image.
Well ... If I close the full screen preview and then I open it again, the image I get is not this second softer version already generated by lightroom after the 1:1 preview ... no, I get the first picture again, the jagged one.
Even more, If when I'm in thumbnails mode I click an image to get the full screen preview, and then browse the next images in this full screen mode... every image is jagged like this ... BUT, If I first click to enter the 1:1 preview and click back to standard preview ... then ALL the remaining images show the softer version, not the jagged one.
This only happens in library module, not in the develop module.
Was this behaviour always present ? Is this a bug ? Is it by design ?
(I hope I've explained it well enough, it's confusing and english, as you might have noticed by now is not my best language.)
Any question, help or comment is appreciated.

I know and hate this bug since version 1.0. It's still there in LR3. And I taught myself how to avoid it.
You run into this bug when you switch from Grid to Loupe and back by double-clicking the mouse. To avoid it, you should either:
Use the keyboard shortcuts instead of mouse (Enter, Esc and Z);
or, in Loupe mode, to switch to Grid, double-click the gray area around the photograph instead of actual image area.
Steps to reproduce the bug:
Scenario 1:
1. Go to grid view.
2. Double-click a thumbnail to go to Loupe Fit.
    The image is smooth.
3. Double-click on image (not gray area) to go back to Grid.
4. Double-click a thumbnail to go to Loupe Fit again.
    The image is jagged.
5. Zoom to 1:1 and back to Fit.
    The image is smooth.
Scenario 2:
1. Go to grid view.
2. Double-click a thumbnail to go to Loupe Fit.
    The image is smooth.
3. Double-click on gray area surrounding the image (not the actual image area) to go back to Grid.
4. Double-clcik a thumbnail to go to Loupe Fit again.
    The image is smooth.
5. Zoom to 1:1 and back to Fit.
    The image is smooth.

I am not familiar with Skim, but I use Adobe Reader all the time and it is quite fast on my Mac mini. Perhaps not as fast as Preview but still quite acceptable. If it is running that slow on your Mac I would suspect either you are low on RAM or perhaps the file you are reading is ill-formed. Are these problems occurring on more than one PDF from more than one original source? Do all PDFs scroll slowly or just some?
