  • Preview won't open some PDF's

Recently on my MacBook Air running Mountain Lion, Preview will not open some PDF's.  Other PDF's it opens just fine.
Those PDF's that will not open in Preview display the following Adobe message in the Preview window:
    Is this a glitch?
I can "Control/Click" them and "Open With" Adobe Reader. The only common factor I can see among the PDF's that won't open in Preview is it seems these particular PDF's are usually quite lengthy and have a selectable Table of Contents associted with them.
Are some particular PDF formats permenently unavailable in Preview??
    Thank you.

    Thank you Allan and Barney.
Alas, though this did solve my question - it did not solve my problem.
I begrudgingly set-up the Adobe Reader account and downloaded the App.
Between: Apple's iCloud, Google Drive, DropBox, Amazon Cloud, and now Adobe Cloud, management of storage and documents is getting "complex" to say the least.
I was hoping to keep all these "collection-type PDF's" with all my other "normal-type PDF's" on Apple's iCloud through Preview.
Oh well, another account opened and another: account, username, password, and Application to manage.
Thank you both for your help and clarity on this issue.

  • Preview won't open PDFs

I have a brand new Macbook Air using OS X Mavericks and preview won't open any pdf's. It keeps saying "preview quit unexpectedly", it gives me the option of re-opening and still nothing. Not sure what to do - it's quite frustrating. Has anyone experienced this problem?

Just tried that - preview was already the default option, but I clicked it again anyway and clicked on another option and back to preview to try that too. Re-opened pdf and still same error....
Not sure if this helps but this is some of the jargon under the error message:

  • PDF files created in Preview won't open in Adobe Reader

I consider Preview to be a swiss army knife when it comes to working with PDF and graphic files. Lately (since the last OS update?) PDF files created in Preview won't open in Adobe Reader. Reader either crashes or just becomes unresponsive. I've been able to open the files in older versions of Adobe Professional but Reader 8 or 9 can't open the files. Anyone else experiencing these problems?

Yes. We noticed this problem after upgrading to 10.6.7. When we made a PDF from Word 2011 or even Text Edit through Adobe's "Save as Adobe PDF" it would hang. When we made a PDF using Apple's "Save as PDF" it would lock up Acrobat Pro 9 and also Acrobat Pro X. NOTE that this only happened using Adobe OTF fonts.
I posted this problem on Adobe's forum and received a message from admin there that this was caused by a change in font handling with Apple's 10.6.7 update.
As of yet, no solution has been posted. I also received a message from Adobe's Tech Support that it was forwarded to their engineers.
    Still waiting.

  • Adober Reader suddenly won't open any PDF files (Mac)

I had an old version, I downloaded the latest one, upgraded to the newest, even tried taking that one out and downloading an older version. It doesn't matter which version I seem to have, it won't open any pdf files from the web.
I use a Mac, and Safari. It used to always load PDF files fine, one random place said I had to update it so I did and since then, lately it'd crash and close all Safari windows when loading a PDF or trying to copy something from a PDF. The smart Mac message I have says it could be related to an Adobe Plug in. However, now it won't even load PDF files at all, it always goes to a white page. Nothing happens.
What do I do?? I can't even save the PDF's as individual files and view then in Preview as an alternative option. It's a link online and normally would work. What happened??
    HELP!
    I have a Mac OS X Version 10.5.8
I've always used Safari, it's Version 5.0.5 (5533.21.1 if that means anything).
Acrobat Reader, currently an old version 9.4.0 download. BUT, I had also the 10.0.1 version which also doesn't work. When I had that 10.0.1 version and checked for updates, there was an update (.3 I think?) and I did that and that also doesn't work!
Why did it suddenly stop working?
What can I do to fix it ASAP?
Only with 9.4.0 version I can go to Help and "Repair Adobe Reader Installation" - I click that and the only box I can select is "Adobe PDFViewer Safari Plugin - View, fill-in and collaborate on Adobe PDFs within Safari"  - I click continue and it tells me there's "No missing components detected. Repairs are not needed." The only option is to click "OK".
With any newer version of Adobe Reader, under Help there is no option to "Repair Adobe Reader Installation". So... I can't even try that with a new version.
I am at a loss for solutions. Hope someone here can help! Thanks!

There are several things you can do. My first step would be to repair permissions. If that doesn't work log on as a different user. If all works properly then you have a corrupt preference file (most likely) or a corrupt user font installed in your user Library (less likely). If that doesn't work download Applejack. Have it repair the disk, remove all system caches and user caches. Then have it check all system and user preference files. Remove any preference files that are corrupt. Reboot and see if your system is working properly.

  • I can't seem to get rid of OR use Adobe Reader after I let it into Safari 7.  How do I get to the point where Reader is not my preferred anything, but can still be used if Preview won't open something?

I can't seem to get rid of OR use Adobe Reader after I let it into Safari 7.  How do I get to the point where Reader is not my preferred anything, but can still be used if Preview won't open something?

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print or save PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to do so by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar should appear under the cursor. Click the printer or disk icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
              Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
              Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others—I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

  • Preview won't open.  It will open when in test mode but not in my user mode.\

I'm running Yosemite 10.10.2.  My Preview won't open.  I followed Linc's advice and removed many files but Preview still won't open.  I have tried cold booting to no avail.

I just figured out how to open Preview...... Open Finder>Documents>click on any PDF or JPEG.  Preview opens.  Now, if I could only get it to open from the Dock.

  • Firefox won't open a PDF link in the browser, screen just shows blank.

Firefox won't open a PDF link in the browser, when I click on the link the screen just goes to a blank blue screen.

If using a Mac, go to the Firefox Plugins and disable the Adobe Acrobat NPAPI Plug-in, Version 10.1.3. This is a recent plugin update, and as soon as it was installed I noticed that PDFs wouldn't download.

Those files that open in Preview, open them in Preview and then save them. Then try import them.

  • Preview won't open JPG image on a USB stick.

Preview won't open 'JPG' images downloaded from a USB stick. I get this message, "The image"IMG_0091.JPG" could not be opened"  It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn't recognise.
I can see the thumbnail, but they won't open. Can I change this in some way? And, no, I can't download them again as I have erased them from the memory card, but they are saved in iphoto.

You can try deleting the .plist. Quit Preview first.

  • Preview won't open in Lion

Preview won't open. I get the message "Click Reopen to open the application again. This report will be sent to Apple automatically." I click "reopen" and the same message returns to the screen. What do I do?

Thanks for nothing! I tried 10 or 12 other things then ran a repair permissions in the disk utility. Forget all of you I will do it my self.

  • Preview won't open PDFs from Safari

If I try to open a PDF from Safari in Preview, the Preview icon just bounces in the dock. However, if I open a PDF that is already on my computer Preview opens with no issues.
Also, I can't get PDFs to download from Safari.
I checked settings and did a few searches but I found nothing. Have suggestions?

With Safari open click on 'Help' at the top of the screen.
Then click on installed plugins. Look for adobe or acrobat.
It may be that with safari, it is not trying to use preview?
    Just a guess.
