Preview won't open eps, ps

I used to be able to double-click on an eps file, and Preview would say "Converting Postscript file to pdf" and it would open in a new Preview window. Now I always get the error message "File error. Couldn't open the file" after it starts the conversion process. This happens with any and all eps/ps files. If I click OK in the error dialog box, a blank pdf file opens (i.e., it is just a gray window). Any ideas? This used to work fine, and was extremely useful.

I spent about 4 hours on this. Here is what I found.
1) This EPS opening issue if it existz causes problems in Preview, Mail, and even ColorSync when trying to open EPS file.
2) The same machine can have problems in one user account, but be fine in another.
3) Creating a new account usually creates an account that will open EPS files fine. (see strange notes below)
4) Even when you copy all the contents of the old home folder were the EPS files were not working into the the new home folder, eps files will still open fine. (You can do this by copying the old home folder to the root fo the drive. Log off. Go to the new account and change the permissions on all the files to map to the new account as owner. Delete the content of the current home folder. Copy these into the new home folder. Log off and back on.)
BUT HERE IS WHERE IT GETS VERY VERY VERY STRANGE. I copied by entire problematic home folder to a BACKUP drive. Then I logged off and logged in as a different admin. I deleted the problematic account - erasing the entire contents of the account. Then I restarted. If I created an account with a NEW name and short name, then EPS files worked. BUT IF I CREATED A CLEAN BRAND NEW ACCOUNT WITH THE SAME NAME AS THE ACCOUNT THAT DID NOT WORK BEFORE - IT WOULD NOT WORK AGAIN. This is a brand new clean account, that just happens to have the same name as the account that did not work before. Again, the home folder is CLEAN. But when I tried to open EPS on this account, they would hang. I could create another account with different name, and EPS would open fine.
So this makes no sense to me. Something in the OS is different based on account OUTSIDE of the home folder.
So anyway, if you are having this problem here is the SOLUTION:
1) Create a new user account with a different name and short name.
2) Copy the contents of your current home folder to this new account. (following the steps above.)
3) Use the new account.
This seems crazy, but it seems to work. Let me know if you have this issue too.

  • PDF files created in Preview won't open in Adobe Reader

I consider Preview to be a swiss army knife when it comes to working with PDF and graphic files. Lately (since the last OS update?) PDF files created in Preview won't open in Adobe Reader. Reader either crashes or just becomes unresponsive. I've been able to open the files in older versions of Adobe Professional but Reader 8 or 9 can't open the files. Anyone else experiencing these problems?

Yes. We noticed this problem after upgrading to 10.6.7. When we made a PDF from Word 2011 or even Text Edit through Adobe's "Save as Adobe PDF" it would hang. When we made a PDF using Apple's "Save as PDF" it would lock up Acrobat Pro 9 and also Acrobat Pro X. NOTE that this only happened using Adobe OTF fonts.
I posted this problem on Adobe's forum and received a message from admin there that this was caused by a change in font handling with Apple's 10.6.7 update.
As of yet, no solution has been posted. I also received a message from Adobe's Tech Support that it was forwarded to their engineers.
    Still waiting.

  • I can't seem to get rid of OR use Adobe Reader after I let it into Safari 7.  How do I get to the point where Reader is not my preferred anything, but can still be used if Preview won't open something?

I can't seem to get rid of OR use Adobe Reader after I let it into Safari 7.  How do I get to the point where Reader is not my preferred anything, but can still be used if Preview won't open something?

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print or save PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to do so by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar should appear under the cursor. Click the printer or disk icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
              Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
              Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others—I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

I just figured out how to open Preview...... Open Finder>Documents>click on any PDF or JPEG.  Preview opens.  Now, if I could only get it to open from the Dock.

  • Preview won't open PDFs

I have a brand new Macbook Air using OS X Mavericks and preview won't open any pdf's. It keeps saying "preview quit unexpectedly", it gives me the option of re-opening and still nothing. Not sure what to do - it's quite frustrating. Has anyone experienced this problem?

Just tried that - preview was already the default option, but I clicked it again anyway and clicked on another option and back to preview to try that too. Re-opened pdf and still same error....

Preview won't open 'JPG' images downloaded from a USB stick. I get this message, "The image"IMG_0091.JPG" could not be opened"  It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn't recognise.
I can see the thumbnail, but they won't open. Can I change this in some way? And, no, I can't download them again as I have erased them from the memory card, but they are saved in iphoto.

You can try deleting the .plist. Quit Preview first.

  • Illustrator CS3 won't open EPS.

I have had a problem recently of large EPS files not opening in CS3 on my new work PC.
The following error comes up when I try and open the file:
"Can't open the Illustration. Could not complete the requested operation."
When I click Okay, I'm greeted with either a completely blank page, or a page where some elements are missing - usually embedded images, which are presumably what's causing the problem.
Before you ask, I've tried the following:
Placing the unlinked EPS into a new document - no love.
Placing the EPS in InDesign and exporting - I just get a blank, grey image and a file that won't open.
Opening the EPS in Acrobat - again, no love.
If I PLACE the file in a new document as a LINK, I get a preview image - it's when I try to embed it that it fails.
Now, I'm not after a way to fix my file, because I know it's corrupted and probably can't be saved. What I would like to know is why it keeps happening and how can I stop it?
I've noticed that it happens mainly when I place large image files into a document. I've also noticed, after some testing to try and find a fix, that if I save as an AI file, it opens fine, large images and all.
This kinda doesn't help me, as I need to save EPS files so that the files can be opened in other applications. Unfortunately, not everybody has Illustrator.
My computer is BRAND NEW and it can't simply be a memory issue because I have 8gb of RAM. Full specs are listed below.
I would appreciate an answer to this as it is becoming increasingly frustrating, especially given it never used to happen on my OLD work PC, with the exact same version of Illustrator.
    PC Specs
    Intel Core i7-2600 3.4GHZ
    8GB RAM
    64 bit OS
    Adobe Illustator CS3 (v.13)

Sure it can. AI CS3 is a 32bit app and only uses 2.something GB of memory. Only CS6 is natively 64bit and can use more memory.
You're right, Mylenium. It seems to be a compatibility issue.
I changed Illustrator's compatibility under Properties to an earlier version of Windows, in this case Windows Vista, and it now works fine. Or at least for the moment.
If any more problems arise I'll post them here, but the problems I listed in my previous post are no longer occuring.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Preview won't open some PDF's

Recently on my MacBook Air running Mountain Lion, Preview will not open some PDF's.  Other PDF's it opens just fine.
Those PDF's that will not open in Preview display the following Adobe message in the Preview window:
    Is this a glitch?
I can "Control/Click" them and "Open With" Adobe Reader. The only common factor I can see among the PDF's that won't open in Preview is it seems these particular PDF's are usually quite lengthy and have a selectable Table of Contents associted with them.
Are some particular PDF formats permenently unavailable in Preview??
    Thank you.

    Thank you Allan and Barney.
Alas, though this did solve my question - it did not solve my problem.
I begrudgingly set-up the Adobe Reader account and downloaded the App.
Between: Apple's iCloud, Google Drive, DropBox, Amazon Cloud, and now Adobe Cloud, management of storage and documents is getting "complex" to say the least.
I was hoping to keep all these "collection-type PDF's" with all my other "normal-type PDF's" on Apple's iCloud through Preview.
Oh well, another account opened and another: account, username, password, and Application to manage.
Thank you both for your help and clarity on this issue.

  • Preview won't open PICTs

Preview will no longer open PICT files. This is since I dragged three of them simultaneously on to Preview's icon which resulted in one of them opening, but not the others. Now I can't open any, either by dragging and dropping or through File>Open, where PICTs appear greyed-out. I'm baffled. Any ideas?

I have tried all of the above, to no avail. I suspect the problem lies in the program (Graphite) that is generating the PICTs as I have been able to replicate the problem on another PB. Preview opened one PICT and then wouldn't recognize any subsequent ones from this same source (Graphite). I have not tried opening PICTs from other sources. I will reinstall Graphite at some point, but for now, Photoshop will open the files that Preview won't.
Thank you both for your suggestions. They have been very informative.
ps I've just determined that Preview works correctly with files created before I first had the problem, but not with ones created since, which suggests a newfound animosity between it and Graphite. I will see if a Graphite reinstall puts them back on speaking terms.

  • Preview won't open anything

All of a sudden, Preview has stopped working. It won't open any document, and it no longer appears in any Control-Click <Open With> list. Preview itself opens OK though. It was working fine until recently, and I can't think of any event that could have caused it.
Does anybody have any thought what the problem might be, and what I might try to fix it? Unfortunately I am 2-3 weeks away from home and my system disks, so attempting to reload Preview doesn't appear an immediate solution.
    Thanks,
    Paul.

Also, can you see what happens in a new User Account?
    *(Sorry, I meant Kurt Lang.)*
    *From the article:*
+Determining if fonts are causing problems with applications:+
+This can be difficult, as the problem could be related to fonts, preference files, system files, or a combination of the three.+
+1) First, move all fonts in the /Library/Fonts/ and the ~/Library/Fonts/ folders to a new folder on the desktop. If you have pared your fonts down to the minimal list above, this will leave only the basic fonts active in the /System/Library/Fonts/ folder, listed above in section one. If your applications are still having problems, you then need to determine if the problem is damaged system fonts or preference files. To do so, open the System Preferences. Click on the Accounts icon and create a new user account. Login to that account and run the applications you are having trouble with. If they are still not operating, then it is likely that your system fonts are damaged, or possibly the OS. Your next least intrusive step is reinstalling the fonts using the method below in Reinstalling your fonts, or obtaining them from another Mac or external drive using one of the methods above. If after that your applications are still not functioning, then other basic OS system files are damaged, which only a reinstall of the OS can repair.+
+2) If your applications are now working correctly, then the preference files in your original user account may be damaged. There is no easy way to fix this, either. At least not one that will keep you from losing all of your individual preferences for each application. But put most simply, open the Preferences folder in your user account and move everything in that folder to a new empty folder on your desktop so the original is empty. Restart your Mac and login to your normal account. When the Mac is ready, you can remove the new account you made for testing in the first step if you tried that.+
+At this point, everything about your desktop will look as it did when you first installed OS X. The Dock, your desktop image, everything. For those applications that need certain preferences present to avoid having to reinstall them, you can try copying those particular preferences back from the folder you created on your desktop containing your original preference files and see if they work. If not, that preference file is damaged and you may need to reinstall the application. Others will simply let you reenter the serial number when it needs to create a new preference file.+
+You may ask why you wouldn't just reinstall the OS. It's because your preference files would still be damaged if you performed an Archive and Install to preserve your settings. If you performed a clean install, then your preferences would be gone and replaced with new ones. So you either will have accomplished nothing with an Archive and Install, since your original damaged preference files will still be there, or you have put yourself at the same point you would be if you had simply removed your preference files; except it took you a lot longer to do the latter because you did a complete clean reinstall of the OS rather than just empty the Preferences folder.+
+3) You can also move all user fonts to one location to determine if only fonts are the problem. Move all fonts in the /Library/Fonts/ and ~/Library/Fonts/ folders to a new folder on your desktop. If your applications run normally, then one or more of your now disabled fonts is causing problems. It doesn't matter if the application uses a particular font or not. A damaged font causes memory leaks and other memory related problems. Copy or move five fonts at a time into the /Library/Fonts/ folder. If behavior problems return, then one or more of the fonts you reactivated are damaged. Replace as needed.+
    +Reinstalling your fonts:+
+At times, fonts can be corrupted, or you may have accidentally deleted fonts you want to have on your system. It is possible to restore your fonts without resorting to an Archive and Install, or Erase and Install of the OS.+
+First, download Pacifist. Insert the first OS installation CD or DVD. Start the utility and click on the "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" button. Keep feeding the application the CDs or DVDs of your Leopard, Tiger or Panther Install disks as it asks for them. If you have a set of DVDs that came with your Mac, the first disk should be the only one you need. After Pacifist has finished reading all of the packages, select the package that has the fonts you want installed and click the Install button on Pacifist's menu. Only that package will be installed to its default location. For a complete set of fonts, reinstall both the /System/Library/Fonts/ and /Library/Fonts/ folders. All fonts you install from Pacifist will overwrite any identical fonts on your hard drive in the default locations, replacing any damaged fonts in the process. If you have copied or moved any of the default fonts to another location, they will still be there and will need to be deleted manually. All in all, this method is much quicker and easier than doing an entire Archive and Install to get your fonts back where they belong.+

  • Preview won't open pictures....or anything

So I randomly noticed just the other day that all my pictures on my computer won't open with Preview. They've randomly been set to open with Illustrator. The weirdest part is I can't even open the pictures with Preview even when I drag them to the preview icon, control-click and choose "open with" won't let me choose preview, AND when i have Preview already open I can't open any pictures when I go File-Open. Keep in mind these are ALL pictures that have been opened with preview before. Any ideas, suggestions as to what is the problem? Any feedback is appreciated.
    -Neil

    Hi Neil,
    Try deleting this file: com.apple.Preview.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. See if Preview behaves.
By chance, did you save the Illustrator files to a format that Preview cannot read?
You can try right or control clicking one of the image files, click Get Info. In the Get Info window. Click where you see: Open with. Click the pop up menu. If Preview isn't listed, then click Other and browse to the Preview application.
