Previewcrasch when saving pdf´s

After upgrade to 10.6 I have experienced numerous crasches when trying to save pdf´s from preview (save as). I have reinstalled the OS (clean install) and restored the rest of the system using Time Machine.
Below you find a typical message (part of it) from the system.
Has anyone an idea on how to solve this issue?

  • Chinese characters copying incorrectly when saving pdfs with Preview

So this is a very strange problem. When I save a .pdf that I have annotated in Preview, it saves fine and everything continues to display correctly. However, if I then try to copy Chinese characters from the pdf, it pastes gibberish. F'rex:
    灿烂辉煌 becomes "3456"
    and
    遇到的问题 becomes " !"
Does anyone know what is going on and how to deal with it?

The strange part is that initially the Chinese characters copy fine. It's only after I save the .pdf that copying goes all wonky.
I think there is a bug related to annotation.
Is there any way to control what encoding Preview uses when saving?
No. PDF is the worst possible format to use for any kind of editing.
Have you tried Adobe Reader? Or Skim?
    http://skim-app.sourceforge.net/
Preview is not always the best option.

  • Keep quality when saving pdf

I am using Photoshop CS6: I also tried this on CS5 going through the same process as below with a little bit higher quality but not the original quality.
I open a PDF, Pops up "Import PDF" I hit ok. I edit the PDF by using the marquee tool to select an area in the PDF that I want to delete. I delete it once the area is selected. Then I save the PDF using "save as...". Set the format to PDF, then hit "save". Pops up "Save Adobe PDF" hit "Save PDF".
When I print off the original version of the PDF compared to the edited one the quality is a bit off. It fills up more space on the paper also. The first one is darker and overall crisper. Is there something I missed when saving the PDF to keep the same quality as it was before I edited it?
I'm thinking I may be able to change quality in the pop messages I got but I don't want to mess anything else up.

You mentioned: I open a PDF, Pops up "Import PDF" I hit ok . . .
And when you were in the Import PDF dialog box what were the settings for Resolution, Color Mode. Bit Depth, Crop to?
PDF is a container format that can have images that have different resolutions, color modes, live text, etc.
When you Import a PDF that may have some of the above issues, Photoshop throws up a dialog box where you can change the settings because you are rasterizing the content. (if your PDF was saved from a bitmap/pixel editor you would likely NOT see the Import PDF dialog)
The Import PDF dialog is there to warn you that you need to tell Photoshop HOW to process the PDF when opening.
If you just hit OK, you are at the mercy of whatever settings were in the dialog box.
To make this even more important, you need to realize that the settings are simply whatever was used for the previous conversion.
So if your previous conversion was set at a low resolution like 72 ppi, then Photoshop will use this setting even if your PDF has a high resolution image of 300 ppi or more. Opening a 300 ppi image at only 72 ppi will make it low resolution and will look like crap.
Also, this automatically raterizing the live text which would have printed sharp because it WAS vectors. but are NOW pixels at whatever resolution you used. Rasterized text at even at a high resolution will never look as good as the original live text.
What was the original application that created the PDF?
It is always best to go back to the original file in the original application and make changes there and produce a new PDF.
What were you doing to the PDF in Photoshop, deleting some text, cropping the image, etc?
If you had Acrobat Pro you would be able to make some changes without damaging the PDF.
Rasterizing a PDF in Photoshop is never a good idea.

  • Tables dropping out when saving PDF files

I have saved a document through writing to PDF in the Print dialog and also by exporting as PDF, but with the same results. In a 40 page document 3 of the tables get dropped out when saving so all I get is blank space where they should be.
Perhaps related is an interesting printing problem. When I print the entire document these same three tables are missing. But if I go back and print only the pages they appear on then the tables will print.
    Any suggestions?

Happens with a Konika-Minolta Magicolor, a Brother 1470-N and an HP Laserjet.

  • Characters missing when saving PDF as DOCX

    Hello community,

  • Set my preferred default when saving PDFs

Right now, when making PDFs I have to keep using the drop-down menu to choose "Smallest File Size" as the type of PDF I want. The default PDF type is "Illustrator Default." I would LOVE to be able to set that default to what I usually use instead of having to select it every time!

This is not the problem. The problem is that one must Save As PDF, rather than Export to PDF. What is needed is a command to export a PDF without affecting the location, name, or format of the currently open file.

  • File formatting issues when saving PDF as PPTX in Acrobat XI Pro

    Hi guys,
I have some issues when I'm saving my PDF (initially comming from InDesign) as PPTX. The format is suddenly changing, leaving a blank zone, and some of the pages are rotated.
Is it a problem comming from the Indesign or from the Acrobat options itself? I have already tried changing the chekboxes in the option box when I'm saving, but nothing worked.
If someone has an idea how to fix that, i would be very grateful! Thanks in advance

Which dot version of Acrobat XI are you currently using in your export?  Is the PDF file tagged?  If not, then you may want to tag the PDF file before exporting it.

  • "This operation is not permitted" when saving PDF through a plugin

Not sure what I am doing wrong. It appears as though I've followed the PDF Reference and documentation correctly, but I am getting this error when my plugin trys to save my PDF file to a new location (dont want to overwrite the original).
Here is the sample code. I hope what I am doing wrong is easy to fix.
    PDDocClose(currentPDDoc);
    ASPathName filePathName = ASFileSysCreatePathName(NULL, ASAtomFromString("CString"), replacedSavePath.c_str(), 0);
    PDDocSave(currentPDDoc, PDSaveIncremental | PDSaveLinearized, filePathName, ASGetDefaultFileSys(), NULL, NULL);

Ahh the problem was that the file was secured with a password. The documentation mentions:
    Known Exceptions
    Raises
pdErrOpNotPermitted if saving is not permitted. Saving is permitted if either edit or editNotes (see PDPerms) is allowed, or you are doing a full save and saveAs is allowed.
So I looked for that exception in the docs and it said:
    pdErrOpNotPermitted
This operation is not permitted. Acrobat
security does not allow content copying
    or extraction. These operations should
    be permitted when the document’s
    master password is used.
So for anyone getting this error, try removing security from the file first.

  • Overwrite message given when saving pdf files

If I open a pdf attachment in Thunderbird and then select "Save As" in the pdf application, I get an overwrite message when using an edited existing filename. eg: If a filename xxxx.pdf exists in the folder to which I want to save and I use the name and then edit the name to xxxx2.pdf prior to saving, I get a "Overwrite existing file xxxx.pdf" message. If I select "Yes", it saves the file as xxxx2.pdf and does not overwrite the old file (so the result is what I intended). This is thus a false message, as the mechanism works correctly.
I have version 24.5.0 installed on Windows 8 and Adobe Acrobat Reader XI as default. It was working correctly on my XP machine, but seemed to have changed when changing to Windows 8.
When following the same steps from a file outside Thunderbird, I do not get the message.

Is this PDF open in acrobat reader? If so Thunderbird has no control or involvement in the process at all, you will need to contact adobe about the aberrant behavior..

  • One page displays as negative image when saving PDF to reduced size in Preview

    Imac Intel Mid 2007
    OS X 10.5.8
    Preview v4.2
I have a multi-page PDF I'm trying to save to a reduced size.
The document was constructed of separate pages, some of which were created as Photoshop PDFs in Photoshop CS4 and others were saved as PDF's from Word.  After moving over the individual PDF's to the side bar, the document saves fine in Preview at full size. When I use the quartz filter to "Save As"  "Reduced File Size" one page saves as a negative image and the others are all fine.
One suggestion I saw in a similar thread was that the mode in PS might be CMYK, however it is not and it is RGB.
Any help as to solving this would be greatly appreciated.

    n.gilbert wrote:
If I select all pages 'save as' will only save out one page and not all.
    JPEG is single-page.
If I print and choose 'pdf to jpeg'
    Elaborate, please.
Is there a way to save to pages out in one go to jpeg where I can adjust the dpi setting?
Yes. Build an Automator workflow using the PDFs > Render PDF Pages as Images action.
Once I have the reduced jpegs it's easy enough to reimport into preview and save as a pdf.
If the desired final output is multi-page PDF, no need to go through all that. You can do the task in Acrobat Pro (PDF Optimizer), or in Preview (Save as > PDF > Quartz Filter). If the current Reduce File Size filter doesn't provide satisfactory quality, use ColorSync Utility to duplicate it (or make a new filter from scratch) and adjust it to fit your needs.

  • Since updating to Acrobat 9.3 PS CS4 crashes when saving pdf

I have CS4 Web Premium. When I save a document in pdf format from Photoshop(PS) CS4, it normally opens the saved document in Acrobat 9.x. Up until yesterday, when I installed the Acrobat 9.3 update, the results have always been to have the document open in both Acrobat and PSCS4. Now, however, when I save a pdf document in PSCS4, the document, after an unusually long lag after clicking the "save pdf" button in PSCS4, opens in Acrobat as before BUT Photoshop Crashes; an error says that PS experienced and error and will be closed....
I would like to know how to correct this, if possible. Alternatively, I would like to uninstall the update to Acrobat, since everything worked great before I installed it. Help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Unwanted duplicates when saving pdf's in Reader

Compared to other problems, more of an inconvenience -
    but time consuming none-the-less:
    using Adobe Reader 10.1.1
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74):
when I request to "save as" a pdf,
Reader will save a duplicate copy -
to both the location I specify (with a chosenfilename.pdf)
    as well as
    to my desktop (with originalfilename.pdf).
This has been happening for the last several itterations of Reader,
but did not happen with Reader version 9.
Suggestions on how to augment this duplication so that
only my specified copy, with specified location and filename,
    is saved?

There is nothing Reader is doing that could be the cause of this. Where are you doing a save as from? Where is the original file? The two possible causes or human error (we can figure out if you are doing something to cause this) or machine error (your hard drive is corrupt with cross directories, this means you need to either erase your drive and restore from backup or try to boot from your hidden OS X.7 Restore partition and try running Disk Utilities.) Let us hope that this is just something you are doing inadvertently.

  • Intermittent Bug when saving pdf files in Illustrator CS6

I save a pdf file in Illustrator CS6 with a specific art board size. When I open it in Acrobat the size is off. When our print's RIP's the file, it is off the same amount. I will re-open it in Illustrator and re-save it and just change the name, the artboard is then correct. This is very intermittent. It has happened on two copies of CS6. Both prograns are current with the updates. I am on a iMac running OS 10.6.8.

    Document size is: 36.01 x 98.12
I can open up both documents in Illustrator and they are identical.

  • Strange heavy memory loss (storage) when saving pdf dokument in Preview

This is already taking all of my day and I still havent got closer to a solution, so I really need some help!!
I am currently editing lots of pdfs and other files for notes.
There is one particular big file, ca. 300 MB (part of a book). When I edit this file in Preview (underlining etc.) and save my changes, I loose almost the whole size of the file in disk space (almost regardless of how much I change).
Saving 10 times, that equals ca. 3 GB. Since I am a diligent "back-upper", I loose ca. 3 GB every 90 minutes.
Over the last 3 days, this has consumed more or less 40 GB of my storage space.
    I have restarted several times and had to delete a lot of files; the sleepimage file is ca. 1 GB big only, so that is not the problem;
so I have used "Disk Utility" to localize the massive space use.
But here comes the part that made me come here:
Disk utility registers the storage loss in total numbers (35 GB free, next time only 32 GB free), but not within the folders (the single sizes of the folders -Application; Library; User etc-), their sizes stay the same!
I looked through all the forums but I cant figure out what happened to my disk space.
I need some help, cause I need to restore those 40 GB they are being used by something completetly useless somewhere.
    Thank you for your time!

In an application that supports Auto Save and Versions, open a document and select
File ▹ Revert to... ▹ Browse All Versions...
from the menu bar. A browser view of the saved versions will open, with the current one on the left and the saved versions stacked on the right.
To delete a saved version, select it, then move the cursor to the top of the display. The menu bar will appear. Select
File ▹ Revert to... ▹ Delete This Version...

  • Firefox doesn't include PDF extension when saving pdf doc

Problem .. FireFox strips PDF file extension from file name when application option "Portable Document Format (PDF)" is set to "Save File" and when downloading a Fidelity Investment's statement or trade confirmation pdf document.
When I attempt to download and save without previewing a PDF doc on Fidelity Investment website, Firefox does not save the file with the PDF extension. Which results in the file loosing its association with its appropriate viewing app.
However if the firefox \tools\options\applications\"Portable Document Format (PDF)" is changed to either "Always Ask" or "Preview in Firefox" the problem doesn't occur.
Or if the user right clicks the PDF link on the source html page and selects "save link as" the dialog box will ask to save the doc as a PDF and correctly add the PDF extension to the saved file name.
This problem occurs with firefox 28.0 for windows and firefox 28.01 for android.
The problem doesn't appear to occur with chrome or IE. However they don't offer a means to do a single click save.

Yes I noted that method works already..
I was trying to get the "single click save" to function as designed.
