Previewing documents from Finder

What is going on? I ask the question "Why can't I see a preview of an ID doc in finder, to save me opening up each doc to see if it's the one I want?" I got the reply from Adobe that says it's impossible to do as ID doesn't know which page (in a multi page doc) to display. What a crock of poo! I've just found out that if you draw a picture box in a doc and click place, you can then browse through all your ID docs, SEEING THE PREVIEWS, so you can then see what the doc looks like you want to open. So why can't you see a preview in Finder??

Jeff,
Relax.
I have no idea why you can't preview ID files in the Finder considering that you can see them via the Place command.
But if you want to know more about an InDesign document before you open it, use Bridge. That's a much better choice than the Finder.
You get to see the preview as well as learn what fonts are used, colors, etc.

  • In finder, or say anything else such as downloaded files, I have to push open with in order to open the file. If I simply double-click on a document from finder, it does not open.

Hey guys. I have this problem where when I try to open say a document from finder, I have to push "open with."
Simply double-clicking does not work. I would greatly appreciate it if anybody could help.
Another unrelated problem is that when I push to open itunes, it says that it is on a locked disk.
    Thanks

Select a particular download file. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window.  In the Open With section choose the desired default application from the dropdown menu then click on the Change All button.
For .dmg files use DiskImageMounter (System/Library/CoreServices/ folder.)
For .zip files use Archiver - same folder as above - or download TheArchiver - MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.

  • Search for Text in a Document from Finder Spotlight

Is there any way to find a specific word or text string in a document from Finder without having to save a new search eac time? I perform many different searches and do not want to have to save a new search each time.

You never have to save ANY search ever if you don't want to. So I'm afraid I'm not understanding what you mean. Also, if you have a saved search and you bring it up to use it, you can change it by going to the Action item (the little gear) in the toolbar, click to see the options, and then select "Show Search Criteria"--I have a specialized saved search that includes "Name matches xyz" as one of the criteria, when I want to find something using it I click in the sidebar, go to Action, have it show the search criteria, and then replace "xyz" with whatever I really want to seach for. • Can't Open Documents From Finder

Sorry- the topic title is a little deceiving. I wasn't quite sure where this issue would go because really it's an issue I'm having with Word.
Word doesn't seem to want to open ANY documents. Every time I try, it stops responding and I have to Force Quit. I don't think it's a problem with the documents themselves because TextEdit can still open them. Also, I know that Word installed properly because it's been opening documents fine for two years-- this only started a couple of days ago. Ordinarily I'd simply reinstall, but I don't have the disk. Word won't open documents from Finder, or after I launch and select open from the options. It also won't open any downloads.
Any suggestions as to what's going on and how I should fix this would be much appreciated. (Also, if you could tell me where this topic SHOULD be, that would also be appreciated).

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.

I can't open word documents from Finder

If you mean "I can't double click a *doc file and make word open" then you highlight the file and do a command-I (or get info).  When the window comes up, change the "open with" parameter.  You can also right click and select "other"

  • How do I pull together multiple PDFs into one Preview Document?

Folow up --- I learned from the video how to create one Preview document from mulple PDFs, but I need to know how to position pdf files in a main PDF Preview presentation document.  I need a lot more control over where a pdf is set in the final PDF document. Has anyone worked on this or have some advice.

If you don't want to use them in InDesign for any other purpose than to assamble them in one new PDF I would rather use Adobe Acrobat Pro than InDesign.
In Acrobat Pro: Create new Deocument > Form multiple Files, select further what you need.

  • Cannot email from Finder or Preview

I have upgraded to Yosemite.  Suddenly I find that on my iMac (but not in my MacBookPro or MacPro), I cannot email documents from the Finder or within Preview.  When I click the icon in the Finder window or in the Preview window a gray "No Service" message appears.
As I mentioned, my MacBookPro and MacPro are able to email or message from the Finder or Preview.  It is just my iMac.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?
    Thanks,

  • Some files in "DOCUMENTS" icon in dock won't open. Get msg saying You need a newer version of Pages to open this document." Have Pages 4.1 installed.  Same files will open ok from Finder, Pages App. Recently sync'd with ipad2 (Pages) after iOS5 installed.

Some files in "DOCUMENTS" icon in dock won't open. Get msg saying "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document." Already have Pages 4.1 installed.  Same files will open ok from Finder/Pages App./selected file. Prob not noted until recently after sync'd with ipad2 (Pages) when I installed iOS5. Anyone-- please?!

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

  • Is there a way to find and replace prices in an Indesign document from a CSV file?

Is there a way to find and replace prices in an Indesign document from a CSV file. Currenty I have a catalog with codes and prices in tables. I need to find a way to look up the code (and new price) in the CSV file and overwrite the price in the current table with the new price. Does anyone know of a script to run this quickly?

    Hi,
    Try this
    1) with all the images showing, got to Find -> By caption or Note
    2) enter the caption you are looking for Image Description and click on OK
It should display all the ones with that caption
    3) select a few images as a test
    4) go to Edit -> Add caption to selected items
    5) if you want to blank out the captions just check the box to replace the caption and click on ok
    6) You will need to confirm the blank captions
You could use a similar procedure to change the caption to something else.
    Good luck

  • Unable to find XML document from class path resource

    Hi,
I am trying to learn spring and wrote my first class today. I added all the jar files to the lib folder and created all the classes. When I try to run the client program I get

I have my client, interface, XML file all in the same package com.training.spring.greetCustomers. I could not understand what I am doing wrong?? Can you please help me.

congratulations on deciding to learn spring. that's a smart thing to do.
stop assuming that you did it correctly. the xml file is not in the classpath. when you get it there correctly, spring will find it.
you have the source files and xml in that directory, but where do the .class files end up when you run them? does the xml config end up there, too?
remember, the xml config should be in the directory where the root of the package hierarchy begins, not down where the .class files are.

  • Using "Mail document" from within Preview

I noticed that when in Preview if I attempt to use the "Mail document" function under the "File" menu the Preview document does not get attached to the new Mail document. To enable this function I must go to the print menu, scroll down to "Mail document" and, voila, the Preview document now appears in the Mail message panel.
I suspect a bug here. Have others experienced this?
(This happens on the G5; I haven't tried on the MacBook Pro.)

The "Mail Document" option in preview works fine for me...dunno what the problem could be, but perhaps if you removed the preferences file for preview from your "~/Library/Preferences/" folder, that might help resolve it. Faulty preferences files are causing folks a lot of application misbehaviors.

  • Scanned documents from preview yield blank/black pdf

I have just upgraded laptops and operating systems moving from Snow Leopard to Lion. I am attempting to scan text documents using Preview in Lion as I had done before using Snow Leopard. I am using the same printer/copier/scanner, HP Photosmart C5280, but am encountering different results. When I scanned documents from my previous MacBook using Snow Leopard, I achieved the desired pdf document results. However, when I scan the same document using my new MacBook Air and OS X Lion, the document saves as a blank/black pdf. Does anyone have any idea why this is occurring?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Rysz,
Thank you very much for your prompt reply.
Unfortunately, I ran Software Update and also referenced the HP site to determine the driver for Lion. My driver is up-to-date and no software updates are available.
I am going to keep researching.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • How to delete a document from a strange part of finder?

There's an area of finder directly to the left of the back arrow where I was unaware that you could place documents. I dragged one up there by accident, and now I'm not sure how to get rid of it. I tried simply deleting the document from the folder and sticking it in the trash, but now it just appears as a question mark. I'm sorry that this is such a poor description, but any assistance at all would be greatly appreciated. I have no idea what this area's called or what it's supposed to do.

Control-click it and choose Remove Item. That area is meant for quick access to items and controls.

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste (command-V) into the text box that opens, then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
I've seen an unconfirmed report that the "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you might need to remove it as well, if applicable.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.
