Previewing graphics files in Finder

Hi. I'm not sure what happened, but in the "Icon" view of Finder, I can no longer see thumbnail previews of graphics files. I can see them fine in traditional view (not sure what you call that; the 3rd option) and in "iPod" view (the 4th option), although even in 'iPod' view sometimes I can't preview graphics files.
Is there a setting that I need to change somewhere?
Thanks!

This happened to me as well. I have no idea why it occurred, some say it has to do with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, but I figured out how to fix it. Here are the steps:
1) Trash the finder preference file at /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
2) Run the following script in the Terminal application (cut and paste works great!)
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
3) Either log out of your account or restart your computer. Previews should work again!

  • How to preview graphic files on a home web server setup?

    I apologize if this question is not asked in the most technical way, but here goes:
    I'm read online on how to create a home web server or ftp server on a Mac computer. (I plan to do this with my G5, running OSX 10.6.4)
    I would like to have a library of folders containing all of my graphic files that I've collected over the years in order to have access to them (if needed) when i'm working remotely.
    I want to be able to easily view all of these graphic files like I can with Adobe Bridge (eps, psd, ai, gif, jpg, png, etc).
    Is there software I can use that will allow me to view a gallery thumbnails of all of these file types when I am away from home and logging into the ftp server or web server?
    I know software such as Transmission FTP will allow me to look at one image at a time, but I'd like to view an entire gallery of thumbnails at once for quick reference.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi johnny-griswold;
    The G5 was called a PowerMac and used a PowerPC processor.
    The MacPro is an Intel based Mac and is capable of running 10.6.4.
    You might what to drop your references to G5 because they are only confusing things.

  • Can't preview mp3 files in finder anymore

    I have recently notice, that when i have mp3 files in the finder there is no preview icon anymore, so the only way for me to hear a song now is to add it to iTunes, and then if i dont like it i have to find it delete. . . i mean not a big deal but if there is a convenience of a preview in a finder why not use it. So how would i fix that problem?

    I assume your viewing in Column view mode. If there is a little black triangle next to "Preview", click it.
    Then hover over the icon and you should see a Play icon.
    A nicer view way is to use QuickLook by hitting your space bar once you've highlighted the file.

  • Icon Preview is not shown for mp3 files in finder

    Hi. Recently I noticed icons of mp3 files are no longer as used to be in finder. Previously I had a dark music note icon and when i hover my mouse there was a play button. Now I only see itunes icon in mp3 files. "Show Icon Preview" option is enabled, and i can preview image and pdf files in finder. But something happened to the mp3 files. It is very annoying. Please guide me to get back the good old icon preview for mp3 files.

    Displaying icons as previews of files
    In Finder windows and on the desktop, the icons for files can appear as thumbnail previews of the file contents. For example, instead of seeing a generic icon for a PDF file, you can see a miniature version of what’s in the PDF file. If you “hover” over the icon for a movie or sound file, you’ll see a Play button, which you can click to view the movie or hear the sound. (If you don’t see a Play button, enlarge the icon.)
    NOTE:If you’re using Cover Flow view, you’re already previewing files and don’t need to change any settings.
    To display icons as previews:
    To work with icons in a Finder window, click the Finder icon in the Dock.To work with icons on the desktop (the background area of your screen), click the desktop.
    If you’re working with icons in a Finder window, click one of the View buttons in the toolbar to select icon, list, or column view.
    Choose View > Show View Options.
    Select “Show icon preview.”
    If you’re working in a Finder window, you can also set the following options, depending on which view you’re using:
    In Icon view: Use the “Icon size” slider to adjust the size of the preview image.
    In List view: Click one of the two “Icon size” buttons.
    In Column view: To see a larger preview in the adjacent column, select “Show preview column.”
    NOTE:The Finder may not be able to show a preview for some files.
    Another way to get a quick preview is to select one or more images, and then click the Quick Look (eye) button in the Finder window toolbar, or press the Space bar.

    Select a couple of .ai files and Get Info on the files. Go to the Open with line and set it to Adobe Illustrator. When it ask if you want it to do the same for this file type answer yes. The OS is probably seeing the file as a PDF and Preview by default is set to open PDFs.

  • "Open With" on any graphic file crashes, relaunches Finder

    Hello,
    When I right click on any graphic file format (.jpg, .png, .gif, etc.) and choose "Open With" from the pop-up menu, the menu doesn't populate, and the Finder relaunches. Consistent, reproducible behavior.
    Open With works for every other type of file I've tried.
    I've repaired permissions, used Onxy to rebuild the LaunchServices database; neither worked.
    Would appreciate any helpful suggestions!
    Thanks,
    Doug

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
    Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
    While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
    After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
    Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
    When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
    If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    *Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Not able to preview html files or CSS in Finder

    When I try to preview an HTML or CSS file in Finder using the spacebar, it does not load. It stays blank, I have to open it in chrome or Safari, which I've become spoiled to the convenience of preview. It's been like this for a couple months. I'm not sure what to try or do to resolve this.

    Great thanks. Couldn't find anything on it on my initial search.
    Here's the thread: 10.10.2 quick look broken for HTML files

  • Finder cannot preview prores files.

    I just purchased a new iMac with Lion 10.7.2.
    In Snow Leopard (on an older machine) I was able to preview prores files directly in finder by pressing spacebar. With Lion, finder just keeps searching for a solution and never finds one. I can see the files if I open them in Quicktime, but having at least a thumbnail would save a lot of time.

    The problem isn't the file's icon, which is clearly visible (in this case a Quicktime movie icon), it's the ability to view it by pressing the spacebar while in the Finder (what is commonly referred to as "Quick Look" - same as in Mail).
    This problem only occurs with ProRes files; all other Quicktime formats Quick Look in the Finder just fine.  ProRes used to as well in Snow Leopard and all previous versions of OS X, it's only since upgrading to Lion that this no longer works.
    It's worth adding that the ProRes Quicktime component is still in the Quicktime folder in the Library, and ProRes files still open in Quicktime 7, Quicktime X, Final Cut Pro Studio 3, and iTunes.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,

  • "Open with" Photoshop doesn't open the graphics file

    I use an old version of Photoshop (6.0) - but it does all I need, which is the reason I haven't upgraded. Sometimes over the past few years, when I've installed the programme afresh (on a new PC, or after a reinstallation of XP for instance) I get the following annoyance and I wonder if anyone has any ideas how to solve it.
    When I right-click on a jpg, bmp (etc. etc.) file and choose 'Open with  ...  Adobe Photoshop' from the context menu, this action opens up the PS programme, but the actual graphics file I have clicked on does not open with it. I have to browse for it from Photoshop once it has opened, which is annoying of course if the file is buried deep in a sub-sub-subfolder somewhere and/or I have many files to work with.
    At first I tried uninstalling and reinstalling PS, but that doesn't fix the problem. Anyone know what I can do?
    Thanks,
    Martin

    In the top dialog you can click on Change to set the default program to open the file type.
    You can add other actions, like Print and Preview, by clicking on the Advanced button (see the lower dialog) and using New... .
    You may need to click on Restore if you don't see an Advanced button.
    I use PS to open and the Viewer to preview.

  • Adobe Bridge CS6 does not display WMF graphics files - what to do?

    The question says it all.  I am running Win7Pro 64bit with Adobe Bridge CS6.  This may be a windows/microsoft/wmf file format problem...but what to do?  WMF files display with a icon only.  Please advise.

    Apparently Bridge cannot preview .WMF files. I have old ClickArt CDs and occasionally want an image. So I have converted all the .WMF files to .AI using a script in Illustrator. Once converted, Bridge will display a thumbnail.
    Here is the script written by Carlos Canto. (Thank you Carlos, whoever you are!)
    Copy the script text. Paste in a plain text editor. Save as ConvertWMFtoAi.jsx in the folder Program Files: Adobe: Adobe Illustrator CS6: Presets: en_US: Scripts
    Then you find it in Illustrator under File: Scripts
    // script.name = makeAiFilesPDFcompatible.jsx;
    // script.description = opens and resaves Ai files with PDF compatibility checked (Folder Batch);
    // script.requirements = none
    // script.parent = CarlosCanto // 06/4/2013;
    // script.elegant = false;
    // script.forumPost = http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1224874?tstart=0
    var folder = Folder.selectDialog("Select Source Folder..."); // select folder
    if (folder==null) {
                        alert("Good Bye");
    else {
        var files = find_files (folder, ['.wmf']);
              var fileCount = files.length; // count them
              if (fileCount>0) {
                        for (i=0; i<fileCount; i++) {
                var idoc = app.open(files[i]);
                var saveOpts = new IllustratorSaveOptions();
                saveOpts.pdfCompatible = true;
                idoc.saveAs( files[i], saveOpts );
                idoc.close();
            alert(fileCount + ' file(s) processed');
              else {
                        alert("There are no Illustrator files in this folder.");
    // recurse subfolders - Peter Kharel
    function find_files (dir, mask_array){
        var arr = [];
        for (var i = 0; i < mask_array.length; i++){
            arr = arr.concat (find_files_sub (dir, [], mask_array[i].toUpperCase()));
        return arr;
    function find_files_sub (dir, array, mask){
        var f = Folder (dir).getFiles ( '*.*' );
        for (var i = 0; i < f.length; i++){
            if (f[i] instanceof Folder){
                find_files_sub (f[i], array, mask);
            } else if (f[i].name.substr (-mask.length).toUpperCase() == mask){
                array.push (f[i]);
        return array;

  • I can't preview RAW files in Bridge CS5 or open them in Camera Raw

    I've been using Photoshop CS5, Bridge and Camera Raw 6.7 with no problems whatsoever.  I recently upgraded the OS on my MacBook Pro to 10.8.5 and can no longer preview RAW files in Bridge, or open them in Camera Raw.
    I've downloaded the Adobe DNG converter, but would much prefer to using my existing workflow if possible.
    Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance for any help!

    Adobe doesn't support CS5, an when I spoke to Apple, I was told that this is a known issue with OS 10.8.5 and that they're working on a patch.  In the meantime I'm using Adobe's DNG as a workaround.
    Have not heard before of this Known Issue, also find it hard to believe being true. But can't test my self because I only have CS6 and CC installed and always use Photodownloader to convert to DNG upon import. I have just installed the 10.8.5 update and checked in Bridge CC pointing to an attached card reader. no problem in showing the CR2 thumbs, it works as always and as expected.
    To my knowledge Bridge CS5 is already 64 bits and I can't think of any valid reason why an OS update would cause this problem so suddenly (but I'm not a technician I have to confess…)
    However, I would first try a check and repair permissions from Apple Disk Utility and also try Cocktail (good and cheap 3th party maintenance application for Mac) to clear caches and check permissions.
    Also try a new user account just for testing to rule out your current account as the culprit.

  • I can't see .NEF files in finder from mi NIkon D7100. Helllp !!!!!

    I can't see .NEF files in finder from mi NIkon D7100. Helllp !!!!!
    I can open NEF files in Camera Raw but Im not seeing tumbs in finder !
    Also I cant see them in preview too.

    Well, I don't know what the problem actually is in the first place, it should work as is, I think something is messed up with the present driver and replacing it would perhaps get around that problem.
    It seems like I'd be adding one more layer of complexity to the Vista machine...
    Not sure how the Vista machine is involved in this, since these are drivers for the Mac.
    Though to involve the Vista Machine, One option not mentioned yet is MacDrive for you PCs... allows them to Read/Write HFS+...
