Previewing photo prep on TV Monitor

What is the best and yet most inexpensive device to use to connect a G5
to a TV for image prep and proofing purposes and do you consider this
ability to be necessary, crucial or a luxury?
G5 Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I don't have one. I'll need to purchase a device to do this. My goal is to optimize a photoshop image for output on DVD for TV viewing.

Preview on external PAL TV monitor

I have a PAL TV monitor connected to the 'video out' connector on a Matrox BOB.
With 1.5 Encore release it was possible to simultaneously preview Menus, time line and monitors windows on the TV monitor.
With 2.0 release the Menu windows is splashed on the TV monitor but no video is displayed on the TV when we launch the preview comand.
So it's difficult to appreciate colors, hidden borders, ....
Do I miss something ? Excuse my poor english ! hope you'll understand.

This is what Matrox told
For the new Encore, the WYSIWYG still works for the menu's when your creating and editing them, but that is it. You no longer get the timeline preview and playback of the project.
As far as Matrox dropping it, it was not by their choice. It was Adobe's doing. They changed the preview engine in Encore and that is what doesn't allow the WYSIWYG to work. So it wasn't a choice by the "M".
I will say that if you want to complain, please do complain to Adobe and request for them to make the engine directshow so the WYSIWYG will still be supported in a round about way in possible future versions of Encore. I find for self the Wysiwyg one of the most valuable tools for the X card, and me personally I was very, very dissapointed that this was no longer functional as even though in 1.5.1 of Encore, the controls and crispness weren't there so to speak as in 2.0, the output was a definite "tide-over".
So Adobe, when will you fix this problem? At the start of Matrox 100 there was a close togetherness between Matrox and Adobe, selling their products. I liked the possibility to look at the endproduct on a external monitor in stead of a small and not so good monitor on the PC.

Movie Preview Photo (Cover Artwork)

Hello,
I recently finished my first movie made up of only an assortment of photos. I used the scrapbook theme w/ transitions and some Ken Burns affects. After publishing the movie the initial photo ( the cover artwork, or the preview photo, I'm not sure what it's called) is not the first photo in the movie. It's the third? Does this make sense? How do I select the first photo in imovie to be the one that's used for the cover/artwork/preview when the movie is published? And why doesn't it use the "scrapbook" picture or theme when it generates the movie?

I guess my question is in general. Any time I render a video out of iMovie. I'd like the ability to select the poster frame rather than iMovie defaulting one for me. When I share the movie to iTunes iMovie sets the poster frame, as you explained to default picture, that can't be selected or modified. If the only way to do this is processing it in QuickTime Pro then I'll go that route, but it just seems like an obvious feature that should be part of iMovie, If you're making a movie about a specific topic wouldn't you want to be able to select the picture/movie clip that best represents the subject? If I'm way off track and I'm going to have to go the QuickTime route just let me know....

Preview photos not showing

Hi,
I'm running a blog where I use a photo on top of every new entry. These photos always show up in the preview on the first page (showing the latest five blog entries) but by mistake I've done something to two of the entries that made this preview disappear. I've tried to recreate them, but it doesn't help. If I go to the entry itself, the photo is there OK, but not on the firs page's preview.

Entries 40 and 41 should have preview photos, but doesn't (42 has no photo in it).
What could be wrong here?

Mans ~ It has to be the original placeholder — not one copied from another post. ...Unless someone else comes up with an idea, I think you'll have to recreate 40 & 41 anew — copying & pasting the original text and dragging in the photos to the new entries. Then delete 40 & 41.

Preview Photos From Aperture Library

When I preview photos in different A3 libraries, I only have 5-6 in some albums. When viewing the albums in Aperture, all photos are visible. So, basically, iweb does not have all photos available to chose from when adding pictures to a site. Any suggestions?

Hi Mark,
Your post does ramble. What, specifically, do you wish to accomplish? Without a pin-point goal, all you'll get is motion, not progress.
You can use Finder for file management, and Finder's Icon View and Cover Flow View, as well as Quick View, for image viewing. This is, of course, simpler (and infinitely less capable) than using a image database such as iPhoto or Aperture.

It felt as if maybe a virus was at work but I ran Sophos and found nothing.
I store images on my Drobo Raid system but when I work from my Macbook Pro I have no issues, just on the tower.

First of all, why did you say yes to Nero Back up before researching what it does with files already on the HDD? When I install Nero, the Back Up is the first thing I disable, it is a nagging pain, there are much better backup programs available. There are several file recovery programs out there to recover deleted files, that is, if that is what happened. Also, if you haven't overwritten the files, so you should be able to find them.

You are correct, there is no flash player on the iPhone, find an alternate browser that may be able to help your quest.
Or use the corresponding app in the App Store.

Previewing HD in a third monitor

I know this has been asked here before. I've searched for it in the forums but I still have some doubts about it.
First of all. These are my specs:
Windows 7
Mother Board: ASUS M4A77D
AMD Phenom 9650 Quad-Core Processor: 2.30 Ghz
RAM: 4.00 Gb
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 9400 GT
I work with two monitors and I have a third monitor that I use with firewire to preview my editing through a Mini DV cam, but I'd like to make the preview in HD. I've read that I need another Video Card, but my MotherBoard just have 1 PCI Express port, so, I think I can't do that
I'm doubting about some solutions I've read here, and I'd like to be clear before to proceed:
- I've read about the BlackMagic Design Intensity Shuttle, but I'm not sure about it because everywhere I read, there are a lot of complains about it because of its bad customer service, and I live in Colombia, South America... So I think it will be more difficult to me. Besides, what will happen when Windows comes up with a new version and the new drivers that Blackmagic will need.
- The other solution I've read about is to get a new videocard, but as I mentioned before, my MotherBoard just support 1 PCI Express. So, I'd had to change my motherboard too. And the new MB I've found use DDR3 or above to the memory cards, so I'd have to buy new RAM too.
I know too that the new videocard must be compatible with the old one because it must use the same drivers. How can I know that before buying it? The one that I have has a few years old right now.
So... I'm not sure about it.
What are your experiences about this? What should I do?
I hope you can help me. I want to go on with this topic until I understand all of this.

A preview card from a different manufacturer is the best way to go. If you are doing it for money, I would recommend Harm's recommendation of buying a new system.

7.0.1 Hangs When Previewing Photos to Import

Yesterday, my wife took about 1.1 GB of pictures with our D40x on a 4GB Extreme III SD card. These photos (about 250) were added to the ~150 already on the card.
I have previously had no issues importing pictures from the card using a USB SD card reader (SanDisk MicroMate), but yesterday, when I plugged in the reader with the card, in the Import Preview screen (or whatever it's called where you can select which pictures to import), I get the spinning beach ball of death as iPhoto is trying to load the previews. The little light on the USB reader stays on as it would when it functions normally. An AppleOptionEsc combo shows that iPhoto is not responding. Killing the program helps as does pulling out the card reader in getting iPhoto to either quit or give me an error in iPhoto and running normally, respectively.
I've not tried d/ling them directly from the camera as of yet but I have achieved two successful workarounds. First is to use my wife's MacBook Pro with the same processor and RAM that I have (2 GHz Core Duo + 1GB RAM). While it's slow to select and import, I get results with her computer. Or, I just mount the flash card, copy the images to my Desktop and then import to iPhoto.
Both of these work-arounds are not very satisfying to me and I'm wondering if it's an issue of my hardware choking on the loading of previews for ~1.75 GB of Photos or an iPhoto software or hardware compatibility issue.
Anybody else having this issue?
Suggestions? Tonight I plan to try importing directly from the camera as well as trying this on my Mac Mini with a slower 1.66 GHz Core Duo. I'll post results if I discover anything interesting.

Yeah - this sounds familiar.
Just got back from a holiday with 611 photos. Plugged in my Canon Ixus 800 IS (also known as PowerShot SD700 IS Digital ELPH in some territories) with the photos on a SanDisk Extreme III 2 GB card - iPhoto launches, then hangs. I tried launching iPhoto first, then switching on the camera and it goes to the Importing screen and hangs again after the 'card busy' light on the camera flashes a few times before stopping.
I worked around it by importing to a folder using Image Capture (which saw and imported the photos without any problems) and then importing from the folder to iPhoto but even this was problematic taking 10-20 seconds (!!!) to import each 3ish MB photo.
Not good.

CS6 Firewire 16:9 preview is letterboxed on widescreen monitor

With CS6, is there a setting to fix the Firewire Preview since the 16:9 video is incorrectly letterboxed on a widescreen video monitor? It is basically letterboxing something that doesn't need to be letterboxed.This is for a 1080 24p AVCHD project with 1080 24p video files.
Adobe Encore & After Effects CS6 properly dsiplay the Firewire Preview on a widescreen monitor.
In Encore, there is acctually a setting in the Preview Menu that lets you change the TV Mode from 16:9 to 4:3 Letterbox. That only affects the preview when choosing to the Preview the DVD. When playing the video from the Timeline or clicking on a DVD Menu that setting doesn't change how the Firewire Preview displays and is always 16:9. Premiere is always 16:9 letterboxed.
Any suggestions on how to get Premiere to display 18:9 using Firewire Preview without letterboxing it?

I checked it using various Firewire devices but they all act the same in this situation. Pioneer DVD recorder, Sony DV camcorders.
The unique thing with Premiere CS6 compared to CS5.5 or earlier versions is that it allows Firewire previews with the Mercury GPU on, it doesn't force you to turn that feature off and use the Mercury Software setting instead which is lower performance if you have the proper video card.
I just checked it using Premiere CS5.5 and it does the same thing. In 1080 HD Sequences, Firewire out has the 16:9 incorrectly letterboxed, or what I call "double" letterboxed.
With both CS5.5 and CS6, the Firewire preview is correctly displayed in a DV 480i 16:9 Widescreen Sequence.
A little annoying but this is where an old Sony PVM 4:3 broacast video monitor works well in combination with a widescree 16:9 video monitor still. Simply turn off the 16:9 mode and it will dsiplay it correctly when editing an HD Sequence. When using a DV widescreen Sequence you would then click on the Sony PVM's 16:9 mode so it would letterbox correctly.
Surprised Adobe didn't fix this in Premiere CS6

You can't. Even if you could connect the phone to an SD card, there is no software on the phone that can send the photo's there.

Mail, preview, photo booth, will not open

After installing Leopard (on my 3rd attempt, clean install) mail, preview, and photo booth will not open at all. i'm opening them from the applications folder, not from the dock. i get an error message that says the programs unexpectedly quit. hopefully i don't have to do another installation. 3 is enough.
i thought it was interesting that these 3 programs are in order alphabetically, and every other program has opened fine.
any help/ideas would be great

You might check whether this is a preference corruption issue. For example, you can find the Mail preference file in [Username]/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
Drag this file to your desktop (so you don't lose it). Then try relaunching Mail. If that works, a similar process might fix your problem with the other applications, too.

Preview for me on external Monitor (or Beamer)

I build up a presentation with Keynote. All works fine an quick. But if I try to show the presentation with a Beamer an try to use the preview for me (2 small slides) I always have the preview on the Beamer. Regardless the position of the main monitor (Displays).
What I have to do to use the preview on the display on my MacBook and the 100% picture on the Beamer?

I've taken this from another poster here on the forums (I don't recall who wrote it, and encourage the author to take proper credit):
"1) In System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement: be sure that Mirror Displays is NOT checked; be sure that the Menu Bar is located in the monitor icon that represents your computer display.
2) In Keynote Preferences > Slideshow: be sure that the button "Present on Secondary Display" is marked. This will direct the presentation to the projector (or whatever display you have for the audience).
3) In Keynote Preferences > Presenter Display: be sure that the box "Use alternate display to view presenter information" is checked. This will put the presenter notes onto your computer display."

Preview, photo opened in it looks sharp and then soften 2 sec. later!

Everytime I open up a photo in Preview it looks sharp for 2 sec and then it soften right infront of my very eyes. Ther same photo looks sharp and stay sharp when open in Photoshop. Is there a bug in Preview that came with OX10? Has anyone found the same problem? I look into Preview pref and tried several tweekings. Still the same.

You were right. When set to actual size in pref. the
previews will remain sharp but as soon as you use the
magnify glasses + or - the softening returns.
I'd suggest sending feedback to Apple about it if you'd like them to change it. It looks like they use a lower quality, faster algorithm to scale the pictures in Preview. Then they anti-alias the resulting picture. If I scale an image in Photoshop using "nearest neighbor" as the interpolation algorithm, I get results identical to what I see in Preview until it smooths out the ragged edges.

Hi there!
The struggle with Preview goes on... After replacing it with AdobeReader for decently viewing pdf files, I need some help with jpg files...
Here it is the scenario: a friend of mine gives me her cd with jpg photos of her holidays, let's see it on my black MacBook...
Do I have to use iPhoto to have a decent slideshow (but doing so requires to "import" all the cd content in iPhoto and it takes some time)?
Is there any way to do something that was (strangely) quite simple in Window$, like clicking on the first file of the CD, opening preview and then telling it to start the slidesow from that file on, with the whole content of the CD????
Am I stupid (again) or Apple forgot some basic features with Preview????

I did some mor testing and I'm sorry this is not a matter of "thinking different", it's a matter of making things work
Try it yourself: get a CD with a lot of photos on it (mine had 400 shots), select all of them and right click "preview": wow it works but in a random order I can't really understand how it's generated...
And about pdf files: have you really tried to look at a multipage pdf document in preview??? Scroll the single page, get to the button and then? Ok, let's click on the next page button (why non jumping to the next page when you reach the bottom...), and where do you find yourself? To the bottom of the next page, well done?!?

Sorry I disagree, I don't say I want to edit photos or making changes to pdf files, I only need to read a pdf file and have a decent preview of my photos on a CD...
I like my MacBook and OS X, I'm proud of it, but let me say it again, Preview IS NOT a good written program (and working daily with WinXP, Linux Ubuntu, Palm and Symbian boxes, gives me a good opportunity to make comparisons...)
