Previewing shots in Lightroom ....

I do a lot of studio work in low-light conditions with a Canon dSLR Rebel. I wear glasses and depend almost entirely on the auto focus feature. My eyes are real bad and I'm never sure if I have chosen the right AF point. The tiny LCD screen on the camera is almost useless to assess focus on playback especially with my eyes in low-light conditions. I need to preview a larger version of the current picture before I shoot again. I was pulling the card from the camera and inserting it into the computer and had to go through all the shots just to find the current one. This breaks up the shoot and disrupts the workflow. Now, I leave the card in the camera and use Lightroom to "import" the pics even though I don't want to import them just to see the shot. I was wondering if there's a setting or a way to instantly preview the shot I just took in a much larger version without all the fuss. TIA for any input.

All of your images when imported into LR from the watched folder are done so as there native RAW file. If you wish to convert all of your images to DNG, then you will have to do so after the shoot.
Be sure to check in the preferences/remote shooting dialogue box "save also on the cameras memory card".
Unfortunately, there appears to be a bug with the conversion of tethered RAW files to DNG's once in LR.
By making sure you keep your images on the CF card, you have a backup if the conversion fails.

I have a question that could be better explained using a screen shot from Lightroom. Can this forum accept screen shots by adding a link to a picture hosted on PBase like I am able to post at DPReview's forums?

  • My preview panel in lightroom book module has no "create save book button". Where is it?

My preview panel in lightroom book module has no "create save book button". Where is it? Is there a workaround to save my book?

The \ key will hide and show the header bar in the book module and the Create Saved Book button is at the right of that header bar.
The outlined area is what shows and hides when the \ key is pressed.  Maybe you have a keyboard that has a different key for \?  On my keyboard the \ key is just above the Enter key.
You can also use the View / Show Header Bar in the LR menus across the top:
If this doesn't work, then can you provide a screenshot of your LR book module?

  • Lightroom will not let me import photos from either camera or desktop. I can see them in the preview part of Lightroom but when I click import, just says they can't be read.  HELP!

Lightroom will not let me import photos from either my camera or my desktop. They show up in the preview bit of Lightroom and I select the ones i want to import, then add my metadata info etc and file handling, but then when I hit IMPORT just keeps saying they can't be read.  SO FRUSTRATING.

You are copying the photos. Does LR have the permission to delete the files from its source location - as DdeGannes suggested? Maybe this dialog is misleading.
Did you try to just add files copied to the destination before - just for finding the issue?
If nothing helps: Any chance you can upload one of the jpg to some file sharing service so we can have look at it?
I believe DdeGannes suggested permission on the Destination folder (not the source folder).  Performing a copy requires only Read&Write permission on the destination folder, not the source folder. You need to go into your operating system and change the permissions to Read&Write on the destination folder. (If you don't know how to do that, go to your favorite search engine and type in Change Permissions Mac)

  • Very Slow preview rendering for lightroom 5 on import

I am seeing very very slow rendering of preview images only when using the import function in lightroom 5. By slow, I mean for a shoot of 60 shots in raw, it could take 30 minutes before I can preview them all in the pane to see which ones I want to actually import. This was not an issue with lightroom 4. It is not an issue when using lightroom. Previews are fast there, even for images I've never pulled up before.
My hardware is a PC, with an intell i7 chip, and 16 gig of memory. My nvidia graphics card has the latest drivers.
I've seen a few others reporting this issue, so I'm trying to log it as a bug. Even though the dial up support text on the adobe lightroom says available 24/7, it now plays a voice recording that says only available m-f.
    Brad

I'm having the same problem using Windows 7 (64b). I just took a shoot over the weekend for a significant birthday event. Now I can't load the photos. The work-around doesn't work as the program freezes before I get the chance to select the camera under "files".
I recently upgraded from 3.6 to 5 as I was also noticing a slowdown in the import function. That turned out to be a bad move I think. I also deliberately cleaned up the CF card and removed all my video recordings, as this seems to be reported as part of the problem, but to no avail.
This seems to be a pretty major bug to have in a major release that's been around for a while now, that I'm expected to pay for, and no sign of a resolution to date!

  • Building Previews Appear Slow Lightroom CC

Since upgrading to CC when I am scrolling through the thumbnails in grid view, the previews appear to building as I scroll down and they are not instant.
Is this normal or do i have a setting wrong somewhere.

Let me try to answer your questions.
    1)
collections created within the Lr Mobile app will be automatically synced to the back-end. You can add photos manually from your camera roll or enable a collection for "Auto Add". With that all future camera shots will be automatically imported to Lr Mobile and synced
    2)
correct. changes will be synced from Lr Mobile to Lr Desktop - back&forth
    3) local camera roll deletion is not connected to the Cloud back-end. But be carefull that the import/sync is finished before you trigger that.
    4)
as answerd before. the cloud back-end is not connected to the device camera roll
    5)
    video is not supported yet
    7)
original resolution images will be  downloaded to Lr Desktop. Preview images will be shown in the Lr Web view Adobe Lightroom
    8)
when you create a collection within Lr Desktop and add your photos you would like to sync, then you can enable this collection for sync. As soon your are signed-in and start the sync (via the top left activity panel) you will notice a little checkbox beside the collection. When you check this sync start to run. Lr Deskop generates smart previews and uploads these to the back-end (plus thumbnail previews + meta-data). When you open up Lr Mobile app and you would like to make an edit, the Lr Mobile app loads the smart preview form the back-end and syncs back the meta-data or edit setting.
Hope that helps you to start.

  • Standard Preview size/quality Lightroom 1.1. (how and what)

I'm working on a Macbook pro, with hi-res 17" screen 1920x1200. In most manuals, tutorials etc. it says that you can "set the standard preview size fitting for your screen".
I'm looking for some more background info on the standard preview, to decide which setting to use(if somebody has other criteria to keep in mind please do say so):
    1) What is the difference in size of files for the different combination of options (pixel/quality). Does somebody have a list.
    2) What is the actual difference in the quality options
    3) In which modules is the preview size used (also in development and slide show?)
    4) Are they also used to generate the thumbnails from? If so, does a higher standard preview size reduce the performance in library mode because it as to shrink bigger files for these thumbnails?
    5) what happens if I would use the smaller, let's say 1440 preview and then decide to view the picture full-size, in library or slide show
    6) What would be the size (in pixels) on the normal main window in lightroom on my 1920x1200 screen. if it is about 1440 (might take that one)
Last question of course: What standard preview size / quality should I use on my 1920x1200 screen??
Thanks in advance for all your thoughts!

As to standard preview size and quality, try 1440 and 1680 and Med and High quality and see what you like best. You will probably choose 1680 size for your screen running at 1920x1200. That will let you run LR full screen where the image size will be close to the full size of your monitor. You can try 1440 too but I doubt that you will see any performance improvement. I have tried both sizes on my 1600x1200 monitor and I see no difference in quality or speed.
Try both Med and High quality and see if you notice any difference in your preview quality or speed. High will make your preview folders bigger which might be a factor if you have limited hard drive space.
Don't think preview size has anything to do with thumbs. Standard previews are separate from 1:1 previews so you can always zoom in and LR will generate a full size preview.
In short feel free to experiment with various settings in LR. Good way to learn the program and you will know what works best on your particular computer.

  • How can I update the preview images in Lightroom 5?

Imported pictures from Nikon D800 and reworked before ore later in Capture NX2 are shown in LR 5, but without the results of the reworking in Capture NX2

    JimHess wrote:
CaptureNX has access to Nikon proprietary data that Lightroom doesn't have access to.
Despite what many people will have you believe, it's not an access problem, it's an interpretation issue - Lr doesn't speak NX2.
It is ENTIRELY POSSIBLE to write a partial converter which converts (some) NX2 (or Aperture, or CaptureOne, or camera, or..) settings to Lightroom "equivalents".
I say partial and "some" because a perfect conversion would be impossible, and a near-perfect conversion would be a LOT of work - there are no real "equivalents" for any settings, more less all settings.
Currently, there is (plugin-powered) support for translating camera profile, but not cropping/rotation, not basic settings, and certainly not the more esoteric adjustments, locals, ...
Maybe some day there will be better support for adjustment translation, but that day is not today...
If you just want to see what was done in NX2 for comparison etc.., I recommend using a plugin like 'RawPlusJpeg' which has embedded preview extraction features, or save a jpeg in NX2 and import it. And as has already been mentioned by Jim Hess, if you want to continue editing in Lr where you left off in NX2, then you have to import an NX2-saved tiff (or jpeg) file, and edit that instead of the raw.
    Cheers,

  • Whatever happened to previews.db in Lightroom 5 Catalog Previews.lrdata?

In earlier versions of Lightroom, there used to be a file called previews.db inside a directory called "Lightroom 5 Catalog Previews.lrdata" , but in Lightroom 5.7, I see that "Lightroom 5 Catalog Previews.lrdata" has become a file (no longer a directory) and there is no previews.db. I had a plugin that needed to read previews.db in order to generate thumbnails. Now I don't know what to do.  (Rob Cole, you wrote the function that did this, and it worked great while there was a previews.db -- perhaps you know what is up.)  If anyone can point me to where a file similar to previews.db can be found (it has to be parseable by sqlite), that would be very helpful. Thanks!

I don't use a Mac, so cannot answer definitively, but perhaps this folder was compressed either via selecting some option on the folder, itself, or by running some maintenance function that automatically compressed folders that were deemed as wasting space.  I would think you'd want this to be an compressed folder so as not to use up an inorfinate amount of time to work with the previews contained inside.  Can you make an uncompressed copy and then rename the compressed original as something else and rename the copy to the correct folder name?
Here is some info on compressed folders on Macs I found by Googling:

  • Previews corrupt with Lightroom 2.3

I've just downloaded Lightroom 2.3, running on a Dell laptop with Vista 32bit. Created a new catalog and then imported a batch of Canon RAW files. All the images appear fine in the filmstrip but when I click on one and it starts to render the preview, I end up with a corrupt preview. Bottom half looks fine but top half looks like a solarised negative. I deleted the catalog, rebooted and re-imported but still the same result. To isolate it as a Lightroom problem I opened a catalog I created yesterday with Lightroom 2.2. Everything there appears to be fine. I'm tempted to delete some previews from that and let 2.3 build them from scratch but it's a job with a deadline so don't want to risk screwing anything up.
Has anyone else had this problem with 2.3? I've never had any problem with Lightroom before and have used it from 1.0 upwards and have always installed the updates when prompted.
    Cheers
    David

Hi Dorin. All the files are fine. After much messing about I've finally managed to import everything OK. Did two things different so not sure which has sorted the problem. The first was no to use the copyright preset I normally use. The second was to import the 300 or so photos in 3 batches. First batch was about 25 photos, second was about 50 and then the third was for the rest. All previews now fine but have no idea what's sorted it.

  • RAW file preview missing in Lightroom

When I try to import RAW files direct from the iPad 2 with iOS 4.3 (which were imported into the iPad using the camera connection kit) to Lightroom, Lightroom says "no preview available." After importing the files, I can see the images, but not before importing--which is a problem, since I want to be able to select the images I import. I tried two different cameras using NEF and Canon's RAW format, and I tried NEF+JPEG, and the same thing happened. I am using Lightroom 3.3 on Mac OS 10.5.8.
When I plug my camera's memory card into a card reader connected to the computer, the images properly display in the import window when selecting "mass storage" as a device. The problem only occurs when selecting iPad as the source of the images.
    Thanks for your help.

Sounds like the Ipad is killing the image preview stored in the image...   try this:  load it into your ipad normally, then instead of importing directly into LR, copy from the ipad onto your local computer disk.  Then try LR import.
If the preview is still damaged, then however you are getting it onto your ipad (or the ipad itself) is the problem.  Unlikely that LR would be able to do anything about it.
However, if the images appear, then something else is going on that Adobe might look into.  File a bug report with exactly how to reproduce it, and your conclusions that there is something between the ipad and LR.
    Cheers!

  • Lightroom 6 creats smart previews slower than lightroom 5 why?

Can anyone tell me if this is a bug or something else... i couldn't beleive when I import my first gallery !!!  IT WAS TOO SLOW (the smart previews import)!
I try the same gallery with Lightroom 5 and brought the smart previews in seconds !!

Thanks , I will follow the tread that you have mentioned.
I read it just now and it is a deception. not sure that was a good idea for me to upgrade LR 5.7.1 to 6 "beta" as quick...
hopping new updates will increase and optimize the CPU utilization

  • How to designate path to the correct Preview folder within Lightroom

If I was asked what is the best and most inthuitive progra for photography : I would say Lightroom.
If I was asked wich is the most dangerous, unnatural and complicated software for a photographer : I'd definitaly say Lightroom !
In the catalogs preferences there is a buton to show where your catalog resides.
Now, where can I go into Lightroom's menu and make it show where resides its preview's folder, and SmartPreviews's folder,
SO AS TO BE ABLE (HOW?) to direct it to an other location(other folder) ?

Thank You for all inputs /answers.
It's really nice to have such fast answers at all, and/but i have appreciated.
I realize that my questions where not implicating the reasons of my asking.
    I had trouble after having
    A) renamed the catalog (and by doing so introduced a misspelling in the totally-correctly renaming of the Smart preview and preview folders
    and
having also strait away copied the whole "thing" from an external external HD back to my internal ssd hd
without having first checked if every thing worked
So i kind of panict and meanwhile LR had started building anew the Smart preview and preview folders (or one of them) without telling etc so i kind of got nervous..
    Now everything is fixed.
Still find though that there is room to improve lightroom's management...
(wizards for all kind of procedures that a "genius-photographer might want to do.. ;-)  )
Please let's not forget to remind ADOBE that they should never assume that we "by the time" all know everything by virtue of being used to it... when they further developp LR.
    (elegance but transparency)
    ( i'm using LR almost daily since LR 1. ... )
Now i'm going to start a new thread for a question relating to how to create smart collection to automatically group/find (lost) print layouts (that had photos associated to it)
(I use LR in french so I mishandle the appropriate english terminology..)
    Thanks again.

  • Is there any benefit for me to use smart previews if my Lightroom 5 catalog, previews and media are all on the same external USB HD?

I keep everything on 1 External USB3 HD so that I can pug it into my Mac at home or my PC at work and just keep working without syncing anything to the local machine. So is there any benefit with Smart Previews in this case? I heard somewhere that it might make the Develop module a little quicker, but is this only when using the Smart Preview and not the full res image?

Lr uses smart previews instead of ACR cache for initial develop-module view when photos are online - amount of benefit is, in my experience, very minor (not noticeable without using a stop-watch..).
But if photos are offline, you may experience more substantial savings.
Note: smart previews are reduced resolution - smart previews of raw files are 2560 x (say) 1920, so if your original raws were say 5120 x 3840, then you/Lr are dealing with 1/4 the number of pixels when editing via smart previews.
Anyway, if you are willing to give up zoom for one edit pass, you can resize the smart previews so 1:1 fits in your allotted display space (e.g. 1280 x 960, which would be 1/8 number of pixels..), e.g. using the PreviewExporter plugin - then things may be significantly faster in develop module. PreviewExporter also has a feature to take originals offline, and put them back online.
To be clear: the amount of savings may or may not be dramatic - how much there is depends on your system, size of raw vs. smart preview image, number and type of edits applied, etc..
Why don't you try it and tell us what you think?!
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • Why Does the Photograph's Preview Change in Lightroom and Bridge? | The Complete Picture with Julieanne Kost | Adobe TV

In this video tutorial Julieanne explains one of the great mysteries of Lightroom and Bridge – why Lightroom (or Bridge) displays a photograph one way and then changes the way it looks a moment later. It will all become clear with just a little information about how digital camera files are captured and displayed by different applications.
    http://adobe.ly/LiGnOc

This tutorial was outstanding in explaining why Bridge and LR may have different renditions of the same photograph as well as why it changes after a few seconds.  This camera calibration video is one of the best that I have seen.
