Previous Airdisk won't mount on MB via USB.

Hello-
I have a Lacie 500GB HD that I was previously using with my AEBS. Due to a new setup requirement, I will have to use the hard drive with my MacBook. Unfortunately, My MacBook doesn't seem to mount the drive. I tried to access the drive through terminal at /Volumes/ but was told that I didn't have access to the drive. I ran some commands I found online (chown). I can now access the drive through terminal and can see the disk in Disk Utility. I can repair the disk but unfortunately, when I try to repair Disk Permissions, I get this error:
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
How can I have finder mount the drive so I can use it normally?

Thank You for the response James.
I actually have 10.5.4 installed and after correcting the permissions in terminal can now repair the permissions in Disk Utility. The Volume shows up properly in in /Volumes and I can read and write to the drive. It simply is not visible in finder or on the desktop. I feel that I am massively close. I have been scouring the net for posts similar to my current problem, which I guess no longer has anything to do with the AEBS, and can find a few who have hard drives that mount properly that are not visible in Finder. Unfortunately, none of the solutions presented to these people seems to work for my situation.

  • IPod won't Mount or Charge via USB

I've had my iPod three years now and it won't charge or mount via USB...Works fine and charges on all other devices, be it my Sony cd player in my car or my iPod clock radio player...
I can reset mine for many many times in a row... It still doesn't fix the problem... I can then proceed to turn the iPod off and it will act like it's mounting, freezes and doesn't nothing displaying do not disconnect (without blinking). If I try to turn it off again, it does nothing except then charge and mount for about 2 seconds, and then goes back to the main entrance screen... It's horrible.
If I hold down the center button and the play/pause button it will mount and charge, but will eventually turn off. It's so stupid. I'm completely and utterly dissatisfied with my iPod (3 years later).
The iPod will charge on any other device besides a usb or iTunes...It mounts right up and charges on my Sony car stereo...Or my clock with built in iPod radio.

Well, here's the real deal about all this. Apple told me, "The issue is directly caused by the 1.2.3. update and they are "looking' at he problem but don't take it too seriously because there are not enough iPods having this problem to allocate any real steps to fix this the problem". DO NOT UPDATE TO 1.2.3. IT WILL RUIN YOUR IPOD! The real problem is IF THEY FIX THIS PROBLEM HOW ARE WE TO FIX OUR IPods? If it is a download, no good because there is no way to sync your iPOD to your computer to download the fix. Same problem with a CD fix. The only way to have our iPods fixed is to send them in and APPLE will NEVER pay for that. Finally if your WARRANTY IS LAPSED, YOUR SCREWED.
GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY YOUR NEW PAPER WEIGHT!

  • Time Capsule Back up from previous mac won't mount

    Hi Guys,
here's the problem I cannot solve myself even if I have been trying many times:
    1) I use to have a Mac book pro under snow leopard that was backed up to a Time Capsule.
    2) I bought half a year ago a MacBook air that I have been using as main computer ever since as I gave the MacBook Pro to one of my employees to use at work.
    3) Before giving it away to my staff, I made sure that I had a complete Time Machine back up of the MacBook Pro.
    4) Obviously I could not upload all of the MBP backup onto my MacBook Air because the hard drive's capacity was too big on the MacBook Pro compared to the MacBook Air. I only uploaded the documents and preferences when installing the OS on the Macbook Air through the migration assistant.
    5) Since then I have upgraded the MacBook Air to Lion and bought an iMac (running Lion too) to upload my pictures and music from my previous MacBook Pro backup.
The problem is that it is impossible for me to mount the disk image of the back up of the MacBook Pro, it does not work on both the iMac and MacBook Air.
When I go into the TC folders in Finder, I can see the sparsebundle of the MBP (next to the one of the MacBook Air, which is mistakenly name Tom's MacBook Pro):
but double clicking it simply won't mount the disk image and I get the following error message:
I try to put the .sparsebundle into disk utility to verify it but it does not work either:
Any Idea how I can solve this?
    Thanks already for your support!

Unfortunately, the sparsebundle containing your backups is corrupted --  corrupted so badly that Disk Utility can't even tell what it is.
Worse, the heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair apps that can sometimes fix things Disk Utility can't, don't work on a Time Capsule's internal HD.  You'd have to physically remove the internal HD (which voids the warranty) and install it in a "disk enclosure" to even try.
There are some data recovery apps you can use to recover some files in situations like this, but they don't work on a Time Capsule's internal HD, either.   There might be a service that can do it, but they're very expensive.
To make things even more dire, dealing with data recovered from a Time Machine backup can be a huge puzzle.  See Data Recovery, especially the blue box.

  • MacBook Pro won't recognize external drive via usb, will recognize same drive by firewire.

Title pretty much sums it up. I've had an external firewire 800 drive (Iomega eGo) for about 2 years now. I've got it partitioned and am using part as a time machine backup and the rest as a data storage/ data moving partition. A few days ago I realized that any data I put on either partition can't be copied off by either my computer or either of my two friend's MacBook Pros. The copy starts fine, but then always screeches to a halt around 5% (this is via firewire). This same drive also cannot be recognized via USB by any of our Macs (I plug it in, light comes on, but doesn't blink), but if I plug it into my Windows Desktop the USB recognition is immediate. I found this very strange. I could also copy files off of the drive via USB onto my desktop. If I let it sit long enough on a failed copy on our macbooks eventually it gives me an error code 36. I traced that to a likely hard drive failure on the part of the external. I found this odd because not even 3 days ago I was pulling iTunes songs off the drive onto my desktop with no trouble. Is there any way to fix this via software or the terminal or anything? Disk Utility says both partitions are 'OK'. I'd really like to not spend another chunk of change on an external, as I just spent $180 on a new HDD and SSD for my desktop.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jeremy

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
{ diskutil list; echo; diskutil cs list; } | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • Pixma won't print after scanning via USB

My Pixma MG3200 series wireless printer was working fine until I had to scan something. Learned that it won't scan via wireless, so I attached the USB cable that came with the machine, scanned, then removed the cable. Have not been able to print wirelessly since then.
I did find that it was marked to use the printer offline (which matched the message I was getting), so I removed that checkmark. Still no printing. I restarted my laptop and it now says Printer Ready. Still no printing, but it now pops up with Printer Not Responding, and of course all it says in the Print Queue is Error - no explanation or link to assistance. Help!

    Hi opus88,
The PIXMA MG3222 can scan wirelessly over your network, however, the IJ Network Scanner Selector EX will need to be running on your computer, and the printer will need to be selected in that program.
We recommend reinstalling the drivers and software for the printer from the Canon USA website to get your printer back online.  The following link will take you to the initial download page for your PIXMA MG3222:
PIXMA MG3222 Drivers and Software page
Once on the initial download page for your model, please do the following:
    1.  Verify that the operating system detected in the "OPERATING SYSTEM" drop-down menu is correct, and if it is not, please click the drop-down menu to select your operating system.
    2.  Next, please click on the red arrow next to the "RECOMMENDED FOR YOU" section and click the MINI MASTER SETUP file.  When you do, another page will appear giving details of the file you are about to download will appear.
    3.  Please scroll down on the Details page and agree to the terms of the disclaimer message to continue with the download process by clicking on the "I AGREE - BEGIN DOWNLOAD" button.  After clicking the "I AGREE - BEGIN DOWNLOAD" button, follow the instructions to download and install the driver.  The time for the download process may vary depending on the speed of your Internet connection and the size of the file being downloaded.
Once you have downloaded the drivers for the printer, please follow the steps above to download the Quick Menu and My Image Garden software for the printer.  Next, please click the red arrow next to the SOFTWARE section on the webpage to display and download the other software for the printer.
If you are unable to scan wirelessly after reinstalling the drivers and software, you may need to select the printer in the IJ Network Scanner Selector EX and IJ Scan Utility programs.  To do this, please follow the steps located at the link below:
    PIXMA MG3222 Network Scan Settings
    Hope this helps!

  • IPod won't mount or charge on USB port

I have a 5th gen iPod. When I plug it into either of my USB ports the iPod shows the following message "Please Wait. Very Low Battery." The message fades away then comes back again (over and over again). I have tried different cables, but with the same result. If I use Apple's Firewire/USB cable, and plug the iPod into both ports it charges and syncs - and gets extremely hot in the process. My USB port seems to be able to power other devices - including a portable external hard drive.
Is my iPod (or its battery) on its last legs?

Wow, this really ***** guys. I am having the exact same problem. I have a 5th generation iPod Video, 30GB. About two weeks ago, it all of a sudden would not connect anymore. I have tried mounting it in MacOS X, Windows XP, and Ubuntu Linux, all of which worked before. It doesn't show up at all, like it isn't doing anything. I tried using firewire (yes, I know, iPod Video doesn't support that), and it at least says, "You can't use firewire, blah, blah).
I threw the iPod into diagnostic mode, and ran the tests. I got to the part where it asks to try the IO connections. Firewire detected fine. When I get to the "USB Test" screen, it simply says "No Cable Conn". When I get to the "Accessorize Test" screen, I get:
    Please plug USB
    LCD ID : 1
FWPWR : 1 (made me plug firewire in at this step, which I did)
USBPWR : 0 (made me plug USB in, I did, nothing is happening)
I can only guess that something in the software update broke something dealing with USB power. For those not keeping track, that's not good.
So, the iPod works fine, I can use it, play whatever music and movies are already on the device, but when I plug it in to any OS, it will not mount. Obviously, since I can't mount it, I can't perform a restore with iTunes (BRILLIANT move there, Apple).
Basically, this is unacceptable to me. This should be a high, high, HIGH level bug for Apple's dev team, and a fix should have been out immediately.
If I don't get a fix here in the next few days, I'm selling my broken iPod for parts, getting a Zune or something else, and that will be the last Apple product I ever purchase. I hate giving ultimatums, but this is just unacceptable.

  • Racked Screen, now iPod won't connect to anything via USB

I cracked the screen on my 5th Gen iPod Classic. The LCD is clearly cracked. I can attempt to restart the iPod and all that will happen is that the dpsplay will light up white and just hang.
I have tried connecting it to my PC and it will not detect anything is there, or in my cars USB facility.
Will replacing the screen allow the iPod to be used again, or does it suggest that more has been damaged? I don't want to buy a replacment LCD if its unlikley to sort out the problem.
    Thanks

A new update on this situation, while just playing around with the iPod, I attempted "slaving" in some componentes of my other iPod, without dissmanteling it too far. So I now know that the Hard Drive is fine in it, as it booted up fine when fitted to the other iPod. I have attempted connecting it to the computer again. After along time of it hanging, I tunes has started up and given me the folowing error message relating to the iPod.
"+iTunes had detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod+"
Also the screen for a connected iPod was present, showing serial number, software version, name and capacity. The name field displayed "iPod" however the device has a different name, and capacity was n/a.
I have reconnected the iPod as iTunes has recomemded, however as I write this post its looking like I may see the same outcome again! How does one "restore" the iPod? I am starting to think that more could be up with it, than the screen. Just as PT had suggested.
Does anyone have any further thoughts on this?

  • G drive mini won't mount via firewire 800. usb ok

It hasnt been too long i bought myself a gdrive mini to benefit from the firewire 800 port. It seems that once my macbook gets warm the drive won't mount. It mounts just fine via usb. I've been to the genius bar twice and it worked both times, thats when i noticed it only happens when its warm. I was convinced its a software issue, but i dont know what to think anymore.
Has anyone encounter this issue? Any ideas of whats causing this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

WAIT WAIT EVERYONE....READ THIS....VERY SIMPLE FIX!
My G mini 750GB drive stopped mounting.....I tried a million methods to get the G mini drive to mount and searched a ton of forums but never found this VERY EASY FIX.  Try powering down your computer (imac in my case), then UNPLUG the power supply from the back of the computer....VERY IMPORTANT TO UNPLUG COMPUTER FROM ELECTRIC SOURCE. Nothing else worked for me.
Wait a minute, then plug back in and re-boot....MAGIC - freakin G mini showed up on desk top!
Good Lord why is this simple fix not all over the G mini site??????  It ought to be on the front of the box when you buy this thing!  Seems no one at G mini sites talk about this and people are sending drives all over for repair!
    Hope this helps!

  • New 13" MBP won't mount or recognize external drives via FW 800

    Hi all,
I have a brand new 13" MBP. I have two external 750GB Lacie drives that were formatted for MacOS on my previous 13" MacBook. I mounted these drives via USB on the older laptop.
Neither of these drives will mount on my new laptop via the FW 800 ports. I've tested two cables on both drives and nothing works. Also, neither of the drives appear via disk utility when using FW 800. The drives do however appear when using USB.
Is my FW 800 port faulty? Could it be something else? Thanks!

    Hi,
I'm having a similar problem to you - my external drive is not recognised by my MacBook Pro when using FW800 but it is when using USB2.
Did you have any luck getting your firewire to work properly?

  • IPod mounts via Firewire, but not via USB

My wife's iPod used to mount just fine via the USB connector on her PC.
Now it doesn't mount at all via USB. I have tried two different cables.
It DOES mount via my own Firewire cable.
I have updated the iPod mini software to the latest, and the iTunes to the latest.
Any ideas why USB no longer works?
    Thanks

I wanted to get rid of this one since nobody answered. I think the 3G is simply broken. It works fine via firewire, and now I use it as a stationary music server -- the battery was too old for regular use. I bought a 5G.

  • NexStar LX External Drive not mounting via USB 2.0

I've got a Vantec NexStar LX NAS with a 320GB Seagate hard drive. Up until now, it's been working fine. I've managed to connect to it via ethernet and/or directly via USB 2.0 from my iMac G5 Powermac.
But recently, the drive no longer mounts when connected via USB. Ethernet still works ok. It doesn't show up in Disk Utility or System Profiler. In fact, both those utilities just keep 'spinning' when the drive is connected, unable to pull up any info on it.
I then connected the drive to my xbox 360 via usb and that worked fine, so I've ruled out a faulty usb cable and usb port on the NAS. I've tried all the usb ports on my imac, and the drive still doesn't mount on either of them.
    Any help would be appreciated!

I do not have a miniStack, but intend to purchase one later this month for my new Mac mini. I have read much about them.
My questions about the hub are not related to whether the thing mounts or not. I am trying to determine if perhaps you have a completely faulty miniStack and Newertech should replace it. Please go to Apps>Utilities>System Profiler and see if the USB hub built into the miniStack shows up as a USB hub under the USB pane in the Hardware section when both FW and USB are attached and when only USB is attached.
BTW, which miniStack is this v2, v2.5 or v3.

    Help, please.

Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache (and Clear History)
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • External Hard Drive Won't Mount Via USB

I have a Western Digital (Model #WD2500...) Hard Drive that is about 3 years old. I initially set it up on a PowerBook running Mac OS 10.3.x. I have two newer laptops both running Snow Leopard, and neither will recognize my drive via USB 2.0.
The weird part is that the drive will mount when connected via Firewire (400 in this case). My newest laptop is on of the new MacBook Pros and it only has Firewire 800. I'm guessing I could probably get a 400 to 800 Firewire cable, but it would be much easier to just use the USB 2.0 connection. Any idea why the drive won't mount over USB 2.0?
I went to the Western Digital site, and there didn't appear to be any new drivers or firmware for this product. The drive seems to run perfectly well over the Firewire connection, so I don't see what the issue is with USB. The documentation that came with the drive indicates that it should work with USB. This is very baffling to me, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks so much!!

In most external drive enclosures that have both USB and Firewire interfaces, the Firewire interface is able to draw enough power to run the drive. Firewire can provide up to 45 watts and up to 30 volts of power per port (not all devices supply the full wattage; my MacBook model provides up to 8 watts). USB 2.0 and earlier can only provide 5 volts at 500 milliamps (up to 2.5 watts). Some newer laptop drives are at or under 500 milliamps, but just barely, and the enclosure itself needs some power.
It sounds like the USB port on your enclosure is bad. Firewire is going to provide faster transfer rates anyway, and you don't have to bother with the power supply. Based on your comments, I suspect it still might be a bad power supply, or maybe it's not the right one for the drive. Those things are easy to mix up.
If you're brave enough to crack the external drive open, what you'll find inside is a standard off-the-shelf hard disk drive, with either a SATA or PATA interface, in an enclosure. You can move the drive to a new enclosure easily.

  • LaCie External Harddrive suddenly won't mount via Firewire 400 or 800

My LaCie External d2 Quadra suddenly won't mount via Firewire 400 or 800, but will mount via USB 2.0.
    I have:
Tested the harddrive on another computer and it works fine via firewire.
Shut down and re-boot. It had no effect.
    Updated all software.
Note: My MBP will not boot if the Firewire 800 cable is connected.

I've had a whole heap of strife with my two macally enclosures over FW. I've only got them working twice together, regardless of jumper settings on the harddrives. I can plug either in fine, but if I use both together, my mac shuts down and refuses to boot. One drive is bus powered, the other is powered via the mains
    I wish you luck

  • External Hard Drive Suddenly won't mount except if connected via keyboard

Hi there guys. I have a generic USB 2.0 Hard drive enclosure that I've been using successfully with my Macs. Today it doesn't work, on any of them.
I connect it via USB to the back of my iMac, and it will not mount. I checked system information, and it finds: (under USB)
    - USB 2.0 Storage Device
    And it knows this:
    USB 2.0 Storage Device:
    Version: 1.03
    Bus Power (mA): 500
    Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
    Product ID: 0x5621
    Serial Number: 00042222200000157768
    Vendor ID: 0x0402
If I plug the hard drive in through my Apple keyboard, it mounts fine, but is SUPER slow, like completely unusable. However in this case, system information says:
    USB 2.0 Storage Device:
    Capacity: 189.92 GB
    Removable Media: Yes
    Detachable Drive: Yes
    BSD Name: disk1
    Version: 1.03
    Bus Power (mA): 100
    Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
    OS9 Drivers: No
    Product ID: 0x5621
    Serial Number: 00042222200000157768
    S.M.A.R.T. status: Not Supported
    Vendor ID: 0x0402
    Volumes:
    Backup Disk:
    Capacity: 189.8 GB
    Available: 44.78 GB
    Writable: Yes
    File System: Journaled HFS+
    BSD Name: disk1s3
    Mount Point: /Volumes/Backup Disk
So.. yeah. I've got important data on this drive, and I seriously have no idea what to do. I've read a few forum posts around the web and have seen similar problems but not solutions posted. Can anyone help?
    What should I try?
