Previous Backup Lost

Hello,
I just had to reinstall my OS and take my laptop to factory level. I have been performing updates regularly, and after reinstalling the Rescue and Recovery, the previously backups appear to be missing. In fact, shortly after reinstalling the backup software the listed backups are no longer listed. I see dates on the external hard drive with large files, but the R&R interface no longer "sees" them. Is there anyway to recover those backups. It is strange the file from the initial backup, dated 2010, is available, but the the most recent backup 20 MAR 2012 is not. What and why would this have happened, and as above, can I recover it?

OK,
So not to be too indelicate. Got the laptop back in February from Lenovo after replacing mobo and nothing but the OS installed by them. All previous backups WERE present at that time. Then this week, I some IT genius who was having trouble trying to configure my NetGear firewall and I allowed him to use my laptop and wihtout premission had installed software which then disconnected me from access to my network.  - I am total idiot for networking stuff - Anyway, tried to use the restore and recovery thing so, in addition to my previous backup the machine wanted me to backup my profile. It started the process and as I was not at the laptop while it went through things, the screen was quiet - no activity no progress bar, etc. and I think still on the R&R GUI- so I was of the assumption that it must have been done. I restarted the machine then found that apparently the process had not completed, or had failed in some way because the machine was in no better shape than before I started the process. And I could not "Rejuvinate my system" as this would fail with errors, and I don't recall the comments. So I resorted to a factory restore. When I finished restoring the machine to factory, and installed the version 4.23 windows GUI, not the linux version which is in the factory version, I could "see" all the backups, but could address them. Then after a reboot, all those I could see disappeared. I can look at the hard drive. and I do see a database of backups with multiple sections listed under R&R, but all of it is in compressed format and not readable by me. Is there any way to force the software to relook up the database or "fix" the database itself. Funny how the original backup in 2010 was present, and the most recent partial profile was present, but none of the intervening incrementals. Additional ideas useful here. Thanks

  • Restoring new phone and previous backup lost

So I broke my iPhone and got a new one and now the latest version of my previous iPhone that it is letting me restore is from July. I know that I have backed up since then, especially since I updated my software on Wednesday. Does anyone know why this is happening and a potential solution? Thank you!!!

No, nothing will be deleted from your phone. So yes, you can delete the old backup, and make a new one for your new device.

  • I restored my ipod from a previous backup and I lost all of my photos but it still displays that I have 200 whatever photos, I just cant veiw them. Please help me.

I restored my ipod from a previous backup and lost my photos. The funny thing is, the photo app says that I still have  200 something photos I just can't view them. My iPod says: Unlock your iPod to view your photos.-What does this mean? How can I fix it?

After you restore from backup, you MUST sync to restore your iTunes content. No iTunes content is included in the iPhone backup. Your apps should be in your iTunes library, just sync them back to your phone. If for some reason your apps are not in your library, you can re-download them for free:

  • How to restore an iPhone from a previous backup using iTunes

Hi all, I don't have a question - but merely a story of the solution I found to restore a previous backup from my wife's iPhone 5c that had some problems. Long story short, something got jammed with her Exchange email account settings and she lost all of her contacts and emails. Everything was fine on her work server (accessing the account using Outlook or the web app worked just fine). For whatever reason, this would not be fixed by deleting and recreating the Exchange account on the iPhone for some reason.
First let me say that this would never have worked if I didn't have a recent, intentional, manual backup of her phone. Moral of the story: plug your phone in to your computer and back up regularly. However, the trouble always seems to arise (much like it did in this case): with an automatic backup overwriting a good file with bad data.
My last known good backup was on Feb 17th. After that date, something went wrong on the phone. When I connected it to the computer in an effort to restore it from that backup, I was befuddled by the fact that the first thing iTunes does is immediately back up the phone, which automatically overwrites the 'Latest Backup' with today's date (the 20th). I tried restoring the backup thinking to myself that iTunes would fish out the second most recent, but when it was finished I got a restored version of the phone that was broken, not the working copy from the 17th.
Before starting this process it's important to know what on which date your last good backup completed.
I should note that in my study I learned that there is a fundamental difference between backing up and syncing. The former handles all the settings and iOS stuff, the latter is all about apps and music (and stuff). This knowledge proved useful later.
I'm using an iMac with OSX Yosemite 10.10.2, iTunes 12.1.0.50, and a USB backup drive filled daily, courtesy of Time Machine.
    The process looked like this:
    1. Unplug the phone, double tap the home button and quit all the apps, and turn it off. It's probably not necessary to shut it down entirely, but that's what OCD does - it makes you do irrational things.
    2. Quit all the computer's programs, and restart. Again, the wonder of OCD.
    3. Once restarted, don't open iTunes. Mouse up to the 'Go' menu in the Finder top bar. Click on 'Go'. Hold down the 'Option' key and you'll notice the 'Library' submenu magically appears. Click 'Library'.
    4. A Finder > Library window will open. Double click on 'Application Support'. Double click on 'MobileSync'. You should be staring at a Finder window with a folder called 'Backup'. Don't double click it.
    5. From here, launch Time Machine from the Dock or from Mission Control. Ooh and aaahh as the Finder window magically animates itself into file-folder order.
    6. Scan back in time to the date after your last good backup. Click 'Restore'. It will ask you if you want to keep or overwrite the 'Backup' folder. I overwrote mine. It was a 25GB folder, so the Time Machine recovery took a while.
    7. While the recovery was going on, I learned of a way (here) to use the Terminal application (inside Mission Control > Other) to disable the automatic backup function in iTunes. For sake of not mis-copying the Terminal commands and giving you broken code, I suggest you refer to that page - plus, you should give them kudos and share their work because frankly, I'm not smart enough to have written it. Simply copy in the 'disable' command in to Terminal, wait a moment, and a new Terminal command line will pop-up. That means it's done and good. I thought I might get some fireworks, but alas.
    8. With the backups turned off, the phone unplugged, and the Time Machine restore complete, I quit Time Machine and launched iTunes.
    9. I plugged in the phone. It booted up. It then synced, but did not backup (which was perfect). The 'Latest Backup' field thankfully read February 17th. Joy. I clicked 'Restore Backup...' and the process began. The phone successfully recovered and I was elated.
    10. Now recovered and fully functional again (contacts and mail both intact), I again unplugged the phone and then quit iTunes. I returned to the Terminal application, and punched in the other code that causes the automatic backup to resume. I relaunched iTunes, plugged in a different iPhone (to test objectively), and it both synced and backed up. Huzzah.
To be honest, I won't be following this thread nor replying to questions if any arise. I just thought I should share the solution and thank all of the people who posted stuff along the way that helped me out of a jam. Thank You.

    Hi austinflorida,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I understand you want to restore your iOS backups to the new iTunes installation.  Take a look at the information below on how you can accomplish this.
If you backed your iOS device up to iTunes, back up your devices on the new computer or manually transfer the backups from your old computer. The backups belong in:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and then choose Run. Type %appdata%and click OK.
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start, and then in the search bar type %appdata% and press the Return key.
    Windows 8: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, move the cursor to the top-right, click on the magnifying glass charm, type %appdata% and press the Return key.

  • Ipad 2- Failed Restore after 5.0. But it tried to backup again. Can I restore to previous backup or is all gone and overwritten?!?!

    This is what I did...
    Got latest Itunes...
9:30pm---Backed up and SYNCed my whole Ipad 2 which was a lil over 8GB onto my computer (LIKE AN HOUR)
**I had 2gb left free on my comp after that backup
Downloaded Ipad 2 (WIFI) direct 5.0 update file. (around 700mb)
    **around 1gb left on comp
    Shift+Restore>Selected the 5.0 update file
    UPDATED to 5.0
    Turned on Ipad
Selected "Restore Ipad", says its going to take 2 hours
Computer basically went to 0gb after an hour. which I dont know why it was trying to backup AGAIN for.
Itunes says restored failed. nothing on the Ipad, still on the "Connect to Itunes" screen. So I unplug n plug again. And it syncs n backsup for like 3 minutes.
I press restore again, it asks to restore to my 12:00midnight BACKUP?!?! not my 930 BACKUP?
Don't see any other option than just to do that one. It restores in about 2 minutes and I'm finally at the homescreen. NOTHING AT ALL except the apps that got synced.
Now I worry all is lost because now my computer says around 6gb free. What happend to my only having 1gb free after my 8 gb backup/sync?
Is there a way to restore from my wanted/initial/previous backup with all my photos n videos and everything??

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • Upgraded to Lion and can't find previous backups

I upgraded a Macbook to Lion from Snow Leopard.  The laptop had been on time machine backing up to a time capsule for about a year.  Then when I fired up the laptop it wan't backing up.  So I went into the "Time Machine Preferences" and it asked me to select disk.  When I selected disk it wanted to re-back up the entire computer. It didn't recognize any of the previous backups.
Does anyone know how to keep the previous backups in the time machine so I can look at the older files still if I need to?

    Jericho...
The User/Library folder is now hidden in Lion. To get to the "user" Library folder you now have to access it from Finder>Go>Go To Folder.
Once there, type this: /users/(your administrator name here)/Library/
    Hope this helps...
I've been working in Lion just fine until tonight! I lost my EXS24II sampler Instruments too... but probably for another reason?  -- Andy

  • HT1766 Restore previous backup

I lost my data (contacts, messages etc) while I updated software. After that I tried several ways to see my data on the itune. I repeated backup and try to resore but could not get the data that I first backuped for updating software.  I am very much ignorant with the backup and restore issues. How do I get back the data from previous backup.

It's very simple, restore the device using the backup.
Are there any errors when restoring the device?
It may honestly be too late though because you stated "I repeated backup and try to resore".  That'a s bad idea because backups almost always append to and overwrite the existing backup.

  • Volsnap Event ID: 25 and Loss of Previous Backups

I have a Windows Small Business Server 2008 machine being backed up using the Windows Server Backup utility.  The backups are being made to two external USB attached 1TB drives.  Each drive is rotated out weekly, meaning that one drive is attached one week, then the other drive is swapped in the following week, ad infinitum for the best part of a year.  Two backups were being made each day to the attached drive, one at 12pm and one at 9pm.
About two weeks ago it appears that one of the two drives reached capacity and began shedding the oldest backups, as confirmed by the VOLSNAP Event ID: 33 entries in the System Event log.  On the second day, however, ALL shadow copies on the attached backup driver (volume) were deleted, as confirmed by a single VOLSNAP Event ID: 25.  (See below for both Event ID message contents.)  Unfortuneately, neither events were noted until the drive was swapped out with the other drive and some how the problem was propagated to the second drive, resulting in the deletion of all shadow copies on the second drive, too.
The end result... BOTH drives lost ALL previous backups leaving only the most recent full backup and no clue as to why it happened or how to prevent it from happening again.  Virtually no older backup file versions could be recovered.
I was under the impression that, by design, the WSB utility would only start deleting the oldest backups (on a full drive) in order to make room for the newer backups.  Granted, had I been keeping attention, I would have actually swapped out the full drives before the actually got full, so that NO data was deleted.
If I'm to continue using the Windows Server Backup utility, I need to know what happened and how to absolutely prevent it from happening again.  I never expected to loose BOTH backups at the same time, and due to budget restraints, two rotating backup drives seemed a logical solution.
Here is text from the two VOLSNAP Event ID messages found in the System Log:

    Level: Error
Description:  The shadow copies of volume \\?\Volume{93896cfc-d904-11dd-8cb5-001ec9ef572e} were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time.  Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied.

NOTE:  Though I'm not sure if this has any bearing on the situation, the server is configured to make two snapshots a day of two volumes on the server, however, when I looked at the Shadow Copy settings I couldn't quite be sure if the VSS wasn't somehow also making snapshots on the two external drives, even though I haven't specified VSS to do so.  None show up on the two replacement drives I'm now using, so I'd say not.
Information on how to prevent this from happening again would greatly be appreciated.  (I'll be making sure no backup drive gets even close to being full from now on, that's for sure!)

  • Time Machine Loses All Previous Backups(!)

    Hi folks,
If anyone can shed any light on this, I'd be eternally grateful. I had been using TM for some time to backup my personal documents and downloads. Until, that is, I got the 'There is not enough space...' error.
"OK", I thought, "I'll do some house-keeping in a day or two and clear out some unnecessary files on my laptop's hard drive." After I did, however, Time Machine kept saying that the space required to perform the backup was 43Gb, when I had only 11Gbleft. Had I let my backup folders (previously totalling 10Gb) balloon up to 43Gb? Surely not. I looked closer at my TM backups and all I could see was a half-backup that had failed to complete. The worrying thing though is that it contained top level folders e.g. <mymac>/Applications, <mymac>/System etc. I had excluded these in the backup folders list, so why had TM tried to back them up? Why did it ignore/override my exlusions?
Most worrying of all though, where had all my previous backups gone? My drive still showed the same capacity. If they'd been deleted, wouldn't the drive show greater capacity? So, if they haven't been deleted, where are they?
Also, it's a little disconcerting that if TM comes to the end of a backup drive, it'll behave just like a teenager - it'll complain, then go quiet, become uncooperative and hide information from you.
Any suggestions/things I may have overlooked?

    MrLinguaFranca wrote:
Hmm...I reckon I have a good technical grounding but this business about 'sparsebundles' is gobbledegook to me. Also, to me the line about "A TM backup drive should be at least twice the capacity of the drive(s) backed up." is nonsense. Surely the TM backup drive should be at least twice the capacity of the chunk of data you want to back up. I have a 250Gb had drive drive but I only want to backup perhaps 5Gb of data. So, why on earth would I want to buy a portable drive of half a terabyte? So, I use a portable usb drive of 75Gb. (Of which, about 15Gb is free and used for TM).
TM is designed to back-up your entire system, and the vast majority of folks using it do just that. And many users start out with a lot of free space, but have a tendency to put more and more data on their Macs. So it's a good "rule of thumb."
James, thanks firstly for your response. To answer your questions, no I didn't see the backups that I had lost when I entered Time Machine afterwards. You're right, the partial ones didn't appear.
I'm not superstitious, (just experienced I suppose), but I kept making manual backups throughout, so, fortunately, I haven't lost that much. Hence, I'm looking more for answers as to why it failed more than practical steps to recover the lost data.
    1. After it ran into trouble with disk space, why did TM try to back up items I had excluded?
    2. What had happened to all the backups PRIOR to the error? Why weren't they preserved?
TM may have been trying to do a full backup of the 5 GB. As TM needs some workspace, that would actually require about 6 GB.
Does TM have it's own, exclusive partition on that drive? If not, that could contribute to the problem, along with any manual deletions you may have done (you didn't answer that question, by the way).
We may learn more with the results from your logs, via TM Buddy.
Meanwhile, I suppose I'll try and download that Time Machine Buggy, sorry, Time Machine Buddy thing and output the results here.
This couldn't have been what HG Wells had in mind.
No, it wasn't what Apple had in mind, either. I suspect you've used other backup apps, and have assumed that TM is similar, which may have caused, or at least contributed to, your problems. Since you're using it in a very different way than it was designed for, you may want to reconsider either your strategy or what's the best app for it.

  • Restoring Backup--lost my I photo library

I downloaded videos from a flip video. I said yes when it asked if I wanted to create a new library. Later I found ALL my previous pictures/events gone.
I put a message in the IPHOTO discussion and received instructions to Restore the previous backup from Time Machine. "Help" in Time Machine was helpful....When I go to the menu...I get several desktops and many backups listed on the right. They are all white characters.. Does this mean I have lost ALL my previous pictures/events? ls there a way to find them?
    Thanks,

    No.
You can get Time Machine information such as:
Pink/Purple labels = backups saved to an external drive
White labels = "local snapshots" - backups saved to your internal drive. This is only available on portable machines.

  • HT1766 iTunes backup - can you restore to a previous backup

Is there anyway to restore to a backup previous to the one most currently done.  I think something went wrong with my backup
and when I restored my iphone all my photos were lost.

To restore data from a previous backup, use one of the following methods after connecting your iPhone to the computer with which you normally sync:
Right-click (or Control-click) the device and choose Restore from Backup
If you have a new phone, you can connect to iTunes and it will prompt to restore from your backup Solution from Apple.com: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766
If you have no backup for your data on iPhone, iPhone Data Recovery software is your last shot! There are also other options available.
