  • Mountain Lion Mail previous recipients question

I have searched to figure out how to do this and I'm sure the answer is somewhere but I can't find it.  I have edited a group in my address book and am now trying to send Mail to the edited group but Mail keeps autofilling in the old group.  Thankfully I discovered this by expanding the group in my email to make sure the list of recipients was correct.  It wasn't.  How do I get Mail to forget the recipients of the "old" group and use the newly edited group?  Thought that groups might show up in the "previous recipients" list under window>previous recipients and then I could just remove the group and start over but the group name isn't in that list.  Hope this makes sense!

Well, thanks so much for the response and your attempt to help!  However, when I control click the group and send email that way, it STILL populates with the old group.  Ugh!  For example, John Doe is in the "old group" but I have edited him and lots of others out of the group and others into the group but he still shows up in the list of recipients and the new guys are missing.
I have worked around this issue by just renaming the group but I'd really like to name it the old name because that is the name that makes sense!  I've worked around the problem for now but would still like to know the answer to this issue.  The crazy thing is that this happened to me this summer and I fixed it somehow but can't remember how!   I thought it was by removing the group from previous recipients list.  Perhaps that was the solution but the problem happened before I moved to Mountain Lion when several things changed in Mail.
Thanks again for attempting to help!  Good to know the control-click trick straight from Contacts/Address Book--whatever it's now called.

  • Junk mail filter in yosemite doesn't work. i can't find the 'mark as junk' selection or 'remove from previous recipients' which would help to filter out spam.

junk mail filter in yosemite doesn't work. from the flags, i can't find the 'mark as junk' selection. Formerly clicking on the email address in question would allow one to 'remove from previous recipients' which would help to filter out spam. I've adjusted all the settings under mail preferences, but that is not helping.

    Hello Diane162,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you would like to be able to filter some of the junk mail that you are receiving in Mail. The attached article has a lot of great information on junk mail filtering, including how to mark as junk and adjust the junk filter.

  • Getting rid of Previous Recipients in Mail

On my Mac Mini, running OSX 10.6.8, and Mail v.4.6, I want to get rid of many or all the email addresses in Previous Recipients, because some of them were incorrectly entered by me directly, or I had a typo or old email address in my Address Book and/or the Previous Recipients list. Some of those incorrectly addressed emails just bounced back to me, while others simply vanished into the internet abyss, never to be seen again. They may have inadvertently gone to someone they weren't meant for, and they now likely have my email address. Oh the unfortunate result of addressing errors.
So, to remove the ones I knew/know are typos, or I know they were old or never to be used again addresses, I went to Mail>Window>Previous Recipients and deleted some of them. Very quickly though, I decided to stop and ask this question before deleting anymore: For the people, businesses, etc., I do email and want to keep in my Address Book, is it safe to delete them from Previous Recipients, or will doing so remove them from my Address Book too?
These are the ones with a roll-a-dex like card to the far left side of the names.

Never mind. All is well. I tested it myself by removing a name and email address, one I knew by memory, from the list with one of the cards to the left side and discovered this did not remove it from my Address Book.

  • How to stop Mail from selecting addresses from the list of Previous Recipients?

How to stop Mail from selecting addresses from the list of Previous Recipients?

    This is a related question.
I deleted ALL my previous recipients and when I create a new e-mail it STILL is getting addresses that I don't want - they pop up and I don't know how to stop this!
I switched from one ISP to another - I deleted the old e-mail account in MAIL - I DID use the same name on the account - is that why it keeps bringing up the old address?
    ARGH!

  • How do YOU manage Mac Mail Previous Recipients?

i am running into a bit of a workflow issue as i try and finally conquer my contact/database. (BTW i am on Lion on the Mac Pro and ML on the MBP FWIW.)
i am trying to figure a way to either add NEW EMAIL ADDRESSES to my Mac Contacts/Address Book or to add these to my CARDSCAN database. the CardScan database i am using to organized all my business cards while my MAC CONTACTS/ADDRESS BOOK i use primarily to make phone calls.
Window  > "Previous Recipients" is ostensibly a list of anyone that i have REPLIED TO. however, this database resides solely upon the computer on which you have Mac Mail installed on (i.e. i have hundreds of these on my Mac Pro and for some odd reason i only have one on my MBP). BTW another interesting question is whether there is a set of these on my iPhone or if/where it draws this information from for autocomplete in MAIL on the IPHONE.
anyway, i have a script that will add all my PREVIOUS RECIPIENTS to my MAC ADDRESS BOOK/CONTACTS into a single folder so that i can get the data from the MAC PRO into AB/CONTACTS so that both the iPhone and my Mac Pro can use this information for autocompleting email. however, this seems like a very temporary stopgap measure.
is the correct way to manage this to go one by one through each Previous Recipient, Add the one's that i want to AB/Contacts through the add functionality - at which point i can /see/ that this contact has been added to AB? if so, is there a way to do this so that my hundreds of EMAIL ADDRESSES don't totally pollute my CONTACTS on my iphone where i make phone calls? i mean, i want this data accessible to MAIL AUTOCOMPLETE but i don't really want to have to wade through all of these to get to a phone number.
also, while the script that i have will send them all to a folder this does not mark them as added to AB and it is confusing to me as to how i manage this when NEW previous recipients are in the list.
and do you have a problem with a PREVIOUS RECIPIENT email address overwriting a contact with the same name that is a PHONE NUMBER in AB/Contacts?
TIA for any help or links to good urls on this etc.

Open System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects
Select:  Play user interface sound effects
In Mail. From the Mail menu bar click Mail > Preferences then select the General tab.
Select:  Play sounds for other mail actions
And make a sound selection from the New Messages Sound pop up menu.

  • Import Previous Recipients from another Mac?

I need to import the previous recipients from another Mac. The importing OS is Tiger 10.4.
I have figured out how to import Address Book data which was exported from a Windows machine as a .csv file. That worked beautifully.
But I don't see any means of importing previous recipients which it seems is only a simple list of names and email addresses.
Anyone know how to do it?
    Thanks.

Just answered my own question. Turns out the import of the Address Book data also imported supplied the Previous Recipient function with the data it needed.
You guys are great! Just ask the question and it works before getting an answer!

  • Previous recipients in Mail Address

When I addressed one email, I discovered that I had four addresses for that person and wanted to delete the three now incorrect ones. After I had entered the wrong address, I held down the command key while clicking on it and the pop-up menu appeared so that I could click on "Delete" which just removed the address from the email message. However, when I re-addressed the email with that same address, I held down something while I clicked on the address and the pop-up menu appeared again; this time it had a new option that read something like "Remove address from previous recipients list". Clicking on it removed that incorrect address. However, I have not been able to reproduce that same menu thru which I could remove the other incorrect addresses for that person.
Question: how can I reproduce that menu to remove the incorrect addresses? Or where can I go to find it?
    Thanks for your help.

In mails menubar, select "window" and then Previous recipients from the drop down list.

  • Previous recipients problem?

Christmas day, my sister phoned to say I was late for dinner. She said she'd emailed an invitation the day before.
There have been other times I have not received messages she sent. We have the same ISP, and I don't seem to have missed messages sent by others in this ISP.
This time she showed me the message in the Sent folder in mail.app. It looked like Tiger. I hovered over my name to see the address and didn't spot any mistake.
I sent myself a message, and it autofilled my address. I hovered over my name to see the address, and I saw no mistake. When I got home, the message hadn't come through. I emailed her and got her reply.
In her Previous Recipients list, could there be an error that is not visible when I read the address on a message by hovering? Why do I need to hover on her computer? On my computer, the address on a message is visible without hovering.

I followed all your advice. After I let Mail build a new Envelope Index, there appeared to be no change. Hours later, Mail said there were 4 unread messages in an account from another provider. I couldn't remember if I'd read them or not. They and more than 100 read messages date back as far as 3 years. More than 100 had also popped up in the Sent messages of that account. The problem has apparently been sporadic.
While I was deleting them, an unread message several month old popped up in an account from a third provider. Otherwise, I've seen no changes to that account. I don't know why it took hours to pop up.
Nothing has popped up in the account in question, my Bellsouth account. The problem recurred. Yesterday a relative told me she had received another invitation from my sister. It had both our email addresses, but I didn't get mine. She forwarded her copy. I clicked my email address on the attached copy and sent myself a message. It came through.
So, the invitation reached Bellsouth/AT&T/Yahoo with my address, but it didn't reach me. My sister wasn't being blocked, and the address was correct.
On the web, I tried to log on to my email account to see of there's any filtering. Yahoo demanded that I first register by providing a great deal of personal information for appropriate marketing. I refused. I don't want my name and personal information to turn up on the hit list of a repressive foreign government with whom Yahoo is friendly.

  • "Previous recipients" and junk mail

I have a junk mail filter that looks for
sender not in address book OR
sender not in previous recipients, then
sends these messages to a Suspect folder.
It works well. However, recently some of the junk mail "From" addresses have begun appearing in my Previous Recipients list, even though I have not responded to any of them and in most cases have not even opened the messages. This seems to happen in bursts, for example, yesterday I got seven of them including one from Allume Systems, even though the originators messages were not read or opened.
I am not familiar with spam technology that allows senders to insert themselves as a Previous Recipient without any action by me. Is this a new problem?

What you’re trying to do doesn’t sound right to me.
Anyway, to answer your question, manually marking a
message as not junk also causes the sender to be
added to the Previous Recipients list.
That may be the problem. When I had a bunch of messages get filtered into the suspect folder, 6 were marked as junk, 1 as not junk. I selected them all, clicked Not Junk and then toggled it back to Junk.
I'll try dealing with them individually, and watch for the symptom to go away. Except for this, the filtering per my rules has been close to 100% reliable.

  • Removed previous recipients keep showing up

No matter how many times I remove names from my previous recipients list in Mail, the removed names continue to return. I feel haunted. I have several computers linking to ICloud which may be the problem.
I've spent a lot of time purging these old email addresses from the Previous Recipients area in Mail on several of our networked computers.
My home computers and networked computers at my office are all linked to ICloud. Would I have to unlink the Mail app from ICloud on each computer and remove the previous recipients, then link again? That would be a lot of work.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Wendy

Good question; I'll have to check. Contacts are synched through Icloud, and the Contact email addresses are kept current.  I know for certain that I've deleted previous recipients in Mail on four of seven networked computers.I suspect the previous recipients in Mail on some of the other computers are the ones that keep reappearing.

  • How can I delete an auto complete address in Mail that is not in Previouse Recipients?

Hello.  I have an e-mail address that comes up in auto complete in my e-mail when sending.  It is NOT in previous recipients and

  • How to delete the Previous Recipients list in iPhone 3G Mail

I would like to delete the list of previous recipients in my iPhone 3G Mail so that when I search it only shows addresses in my Contacts, not every single random address I may have used.
I know how to do this in Mail on my desktop, and I tried the option of replacing the Mail info on the iPhone with the info from the desktop, but it didn't work.
Anyone knows how to do this?

    sanjinzvonic,
In my expeirence, the only way to do this is to restore your iPhone, setting it up as a new phone. You can try resetting all settings prior to this to see if that does it as well.

  • In mail, how do I print the list of Previous Recipients?

I'm using mail in 10.5.4. It works fine for me, including the capability of suggesting email addresses from the Previous Recipients list. But, of course, this runs only on my eMac at home.
I plan to be away for 3 weeks, and will be using email on various folks' computers, by contacting my email server directly (verizon.net). But my email server does not have my Previous Recipients list.
How can I print the Previous Recipients list?
In the Previous Recipients window, I find that I can select a single email address with a mouse click, and select all the recipients (command-a), but the copy command (command-c) does not work.
I've also tried to look at the file:
    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBookApplication Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr,
but it is not in a readily viewable text format. The Unix "file" command describes it as an "SQLite database (Version 3)."
Does anyone know how to print a copy of the Previous Recipients, to take with me on vacation?
    Thanks

This turns out to be more complicated than I had hoped, but it is possible.
The Apple mail program uses a database program available in Unix called “sqlite3.”
    The executable is in /usr/bin.
For information about this program, type “man sqlite3” in a terminal window. Also, there is information on the web, at www.sqlite.org.
A friend whose day job is in database administration helped me work this out.
First, go the proper directory in a terminal window:
    cd ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
The file of interest is MailRecents-v4abcdmr.
Note that the “file” command describes this as:
    file MailRecents-v4abcdmr
    MailRecents-v4.abcdmr: SQLite database (Version 3)
    sqlite3 MailRecents-v4.abcdmr
    SQLite version 3.4.0
    Enter ".help" for instructions
    sqlite>
    Let’s see the headers:
    sqlite> .headers ON
Now, let’s get some information about what’s in this database file:
    sqlite> select * from SQLITE_MASTER; /* don’t forget the semicolon */
    /* lots of output */
The table ZABCDMAILRECENT is of interest to us. Note that the last 3 columns are called ZLASTNAME, ZFIRSTNAME, and ZEMAIL. We want these from the table, in columns, in filename.txt.
    sqlite> .mode columns ZABCDMAILRECENT
    sqlite> .width 15 15 36 /* make sure the columns are wide enough */
    sqlite> .output filename.txt /* note: no ‘;’ */
    sqlite:> select ZLASTNAME, ZFIRSTNAME, ZEMAIL from ZABCDMAILRECENT;
    sqlite> .exit
Done. The email names and addresses are now in filename.txt, one per line.
Maybe, someday, someone at Apple will add this capability to mail.

  • Anyone know how to copy/export previous recipients list from Outlook to iCloud?

    Hi,
Ever since using MobileMe and now iCloud to sync contacts with Outlook, I've had horrendous issues with mulitple duplicates within my contacts. In an attempt to resolve this, I've manually removed all the duplicates, synced with my iphone and ipad and iCloud and removed them from my local Outlook contacts folder. Then, within Outlook, all the contacts are only listed in the iCloud folder. This seems to be working well now for a few months, but now, every time I write a new email, there's no auto-suggest of my contacts emails, like there was before. Is there a file that stores a previous recipients list that can be copied or moved to accomodate emails being sent from my iCloud account?
    Thanks for any help.
