Previous systems folder -- what can i delete?

i had to archive my old system and now, in my hard drive, is the "previous systems" folder with the old library and whatnot.
i have moved my personal files (desktop, itunes, word files) into my new system and i'm wondering if i can just delete the entire "previous systems" folder -- or if there are things in there that i should be sure to transfer (like any program or application files), or if deleting that folder might cause any problems.
also, should i just delete the inner "previous system 1" folder (the only folder inside "previous systems") or can i delete the whole folder, prev systems? i don't think it was there before the archive so i assume i can delete it but i wasn't positive.

There are some things that might need moving: printer software that you added and so on. I suggest that you use the machine for a week or two and if you're content that all is working normally then you can trash it. That's what I did.

Private Folder - What can I delete?

So my Private folder contains about 56 GB of my hardrive. Most of it is in Private/var/log/asl (53 GB).
What is this used for?

The "private" folder is part of the Unix side of OS X. Deleting anything would not be wise. The "asl" folder contains a record of everything that has been installed on your computer. It is what Software Update relies on to determine what upgrades are required, if any. However, 53 GBs in the folder seems a bit odd. Perhaps you could peak inside the folder to see what particular file(s) is using so much disk space. Although deleting the contents of the "asl" folder won't cause great harm, it will cause Software Update and other applications to "forget" what's been installed or updated.

What can I delete from Extensions and System folder?

I just installed System 10.4 bundled with Classic Mode on my eMac. There seemed to be a lot of things that got installed that I won't need, such as: printer drivers, iChat, Quicken and World Book Encyclopedia. What can I safely delete from the Extensions folder that will not affect the operating system, keeping in that want to run on programs in Classic Mode? Is there anything else I can delete along these lines that will free up hard drive space? Is there anything I can safely delete from the System Folder?
I chose the Archive and install for installation. It says it created a "Previous System Folder". Can I delete this Previous System Folder to make it run faster?

A standard install loads you up with a pile of unneeded printer drivers, foreign fonts and foreign language support. Did you do the optional install that allows you to omit these space-eaters? If not, as this is a new install, you might consider reinstalling and exercising the optional or custom install options.
Back in the OS9 and earlier days when hard drives were tiny and RAM was expensive, it was a real help to rid one's self of the extra unused extensions. They had "open" and easily understood file names making it a no-brainer to drag those extensions to an "unused extension" folder outside the System folder.
Of all the eMacs made there were only two basic logic board architectures. The first would accommodate up to 1 GB RAM and the second could handle a total of 2GB RAM. Do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu and, in the resulting window, click the "More Info..." button to launch System Profiler.
In Profiler's first screen you can tell which architecture you have. The second line in OS 104 is "Machine Model" followed by a code:
code "PowerMac4,4" --the first architecture, with USB 1.1 and a max RAm of 1GB
code "PowerMac6,4 --that later and desirable USB 2.0 logic board that can do 2GB RAM.

"PC-133" RAM is preferred in 4,4 eMacs for best function.

I've bought 90 percent of my RAM from this vendor for the last decade and can vouch for their product quality and customer service.
The point is that maxxing out your RAM is not expensive and saves you a lot of grief from deleting some file with a cryptic OSX name that the computer really needs.

Can't Delete Previous Systems Folder

I did an archive and reinstall some time ago, and got what I needed from the Previous Systems folder. So I tried to delete it (Secure Delete), and got most of it gone. What is left is a "Previous Systems" folder, with an "Previous System 1" folder inside, which shows up in the window as empty. When I try and delete it, I get a message that I can't because "html" is in use. I went in via Terminal, and found a series of directories under my "empty" Previous System 1:
usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/html, with a ton of ".html" files in the "html" folder. I got rid of all those files, then tried to get rid of "html", but it tells me that it isn't empty. I used sudo rmdir, and sudo rm -rf, and I get the same message. What gives, and what can I do about it?

Just to follow up on my problem, I finally had to backup my drive onto another drive, reformat the disk, and copy everything back. The unempty-able Trash was then empty. I still have one other problem that I hoped all that would fix, but I'll post it as a separate question. Just in case someone's curious, the problem (which I had before) is that sometimes upon waking from sleep, I get no response from the machine in that:
1.) The battery/power meter doesn't update.
2.) Once I try and click the cursor on anything on the screen (Locations, a window, the Airport menu bar), I get a spinning beachball that goes on for minutes. When it goes away, I try clicking again, and back it comes. Eventually, the machine "catches up" and works, but it's very inconvenient. Usually, this happens after the machine has slept over night. It could be a network issue (i.e., it's looking for the network it saw the night before), but it doesn't happen everytime. It's enough to make me wonder why I bought a Mac.

Previous System -- What can I delete?

I recently had to perform an Archive and Install on my system, which results in the creation of a Previous System folder. This thing is taking up about 6 Gigs of hard drive space, which is an awful lot for something that appears to do nothing for me. It was more efficient just to reinstall all my software than to try to find all the hidden files that caused problems after re-installing the system.
My question is, what can I safely delete at this point? Things have been apparently running fine for a couple of weeks, and even if they weren't, it seems that it would be a bad idea to copy anything from the corrupted old system, rather than just re-installing again from disk. I'm afraid to just delete anything out of the Previous Library or System folders without knowing what I'm doing. What sort of things might cause problems that I'd actually need the OLD files for? And what is the "Private" folder? Can that be safely deleted now?
[I have to say, up to OS 9 I knew what almost everything in the System Folder did, and what could be deleted, or turned off, and how to fix it if I deleted the wrong file. But I can't begin to fathom the depths of OS X. It's like the Directory in a PC. I don't know any more what anything is there for, and I'm afraid to touch anything.]

So if my applications all launch, that's enough to satisfy myself that the Previous System folder is no longer necessary? That is, (a) none of those files will affect anything other than my ability to run applications? and (b) none of those files will affect how an application runs, but will by its absence prevent it from even launching? I'm hoping that's so, since that would be relatively easy to verify.
I'd just archive this previous system off disk, but even that seems like a waste of space if it does nothing for me any more.
Also, how does a FWHD preclude the need for doing an A&I? Sure, I could boot from that other OS, but if the one on the main internal drive goes corrupt, wouldn't I still need to re-install either as A&I or as a clean installation?

Deleting Previous System Folder

I'm upgrading from Panther to Tiger on my Power Book G4. After I finish making a clone of my current hard drive, I plan to upgrade to Tiger by doing a Clean Archive Reinstall, preserve all network and system preferences settings. What I want to know is can I delete my Previous System Folder once I have upgraded to Tiger 10.4.11?
Can someone let me know?

Yes. However, you may find that some information in the /Library/ folder may not be moved automatically during the Archive and Install. In particular you want to check these:
/Library/Application Support/
/Library/Preferences/
/Library/StartupItems/
/Library/InputManagers/
/Library/PreferencePanes/
These may contain items installed by third-party software that you will have to move manually from the PSF.
If you have Palm software installed there will also be one or two Palm related folders that you will need to transfer.
Once you are satisfied that you have everything then drag the PSF to the Trash and empty. If you get any warnings then simply restart the computer and then empty the Trash.

How can I restore folders and files from Previous Systems folder

I have been unable to migrate files (or even find the option to migrate files) located in my Previous Systems folder. I've been able to change the Privilege of these files to Read & Write (though my Permissions still indicate "You can only read.") and drag them from my previous Users folder to my current desktop, which creates a situation where I have them but am still unable to alter them (or delete them).

Here's my exact issue: I've spent many hours converting vinyl records to mp3s, which were then stored in the iTunes folder of my previous system. Upon performing the Archive and Install, all of these files were located in my Previous Systems>Users>"X">Music folder, which initially could not be opened, prompting the notice, "The folder Music could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges." So, I clicked "Get Info" and changed the Privilege from Read Only to Read & Write. From there I could open the folder, and as you pointed out, move these files wherever I chose. The problem is that I can't use them in any practical sense; I can't import them to my iTunes library and I can't delete them, being notified, "The operation can't be completed because backup items can't be modified." Which, would lead me to believe that I have yet to restore them properly.

Deleted previous system folder, now I'm a-havin' problems.

I found a "Previous Systems" folder from a months-old archive and install hanging around my hard drive taking up space; figuring it was devoid of anything I needed, I trashed it. The next day, when I tried to open up Mac Mail, to my surprise it gave me the initial setup screen you get when you open the program for the first time, asking me for my account info!
So, I re-set up my accounts and it at least got my mailboxes from my Library folder correct, but without any of the messages. So, I imported my mailboxes as they stood on my computer in User>library>mail. This seemed to import everything correctly, and I thought the problem was solved.
However, when I search for the odd message, many say this:
"The message from Alec Quig <[email protected]> concerning “Submission” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
These messages are most definitely not on my email servers. Anyone know how can I get them back?

Sounds like your Mail index is corrupted. To create a new one, do this:
1. Quit Mail.
2. Go to Home/Library/Mail and remove the Envelope Index file to your Desktop.
3. Start Mail and let it import your messages. When that's done, you should be able to go back to those old messages and see the entire message again.
4. If that works, you can delete the old Envelope Index file on your Desktop.

Deleted Previous System Folder, No 10.5 Restart

Apparently I've done a bad, bad thing. I installed 10.5 with the the archive and install option which created the "previous system" folder. Later I recovered what I wanted from that folder and deleted it. Now when I attempt to start in Mac OS I get a folder icon with a "?" and it starts up in Boot Camp. I tried starting up using the Install DVD for 10.5, but the computer will not recognize the DVD either in start up or while running XP through boot camp.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

The library alias is just a bug that all of us are experiencing. It has been around for a while and no one knows if or when it will be fixed. It does no harm and if you remove it it will come back so just ignore it. You had it in there before but probably just didn't notice it.

Can I copy newer system (10.6.8.) from previous system folder after archive and install with (10.5.4)?

Did an archive and install.
In my (dated) Previous System Folder are Appl / Library / System / User folders.
Copied my User folder back no problem.
Can that also be done with the newer system? No info in support.
Time Machine won't migrate because of newer system and I have only a disk image of Snow Leopard and can't burn double layer DVDs.
When I tried to order SL DVD from Apple they told me it'll take 3 weeks ...

Can you access a Leopard previous system folder after upgrading to Snow?

If I have a previous system folder from 10.5, can I copy to my machine running Snow Leopard and access files? I have it archived and want to upgrade a MacBook intel currently using Tiger to either Leopard or Snow Leopard and then access the files.
I see the previous system folder and user on the Tiger machine fine. It shows correct folder sizes, but files do not appear...assuming because it's 10.5.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Long story...but basically was using 10.5 regularly, then had some major issues (couldn't even log in at all). Went to reinstall OS but my Leopard system disc was damaged. So went back to 10.4 (had old disc)and copied previous system folder to archive. Was going to buy and reinstall 10.5 but thought about going all the way to SL instead.

I need an additional 3.1GB of storage to backup my phone. under documents and data i have 481.1KB with Passbook which i don't think i use ever and I have previous backups on here. Then I also have under iCloud i have mail, contacts, calendar, reminders, and safari on as well as photos and documents and data (which i don't know what that is). what can i delete? i can't buy more space right now.

Your current running system isn't using any part of the Previous Systems folder. All of that folder's contents are just sitting there. If there were no old components you want to keep (most likely command line software you may have installed yourself) it is completely safe to trash that folder.

I ended up with a alias of "library" in the network panel. Of the Finder. When checking for "more info" on this. None shows up. Should I be worried about this. It doesn't seem to effect any of the operating system. I wonder why this happened?
I had to install 10.4 twice. When it first came out. For some reason the first time had problem. And that's how I ended up with previous system folder. I tried erasing with the finders "secure erase" feature. And it was taking forever. I had to back out and erase normally.
