Previous Time Capsule Limits

I have the previous version of the Time Capsule (1TB) and I have it connected to 3 apple TVs and 4 Airport Express for coverage extension.  Because we have a large family, there are 6-7 personal devices (iPad, iPod, etc.) connected.
One of the aTVs can't connect to the internet unless I reboot the TC.  Is there a limit to the number of devices the previous model can cope with.
Alternatively, is there a diagnostic I can run on the TC to check it is all working OK?
Thanks,

Ok.. first thing is to definitely take the TC back to 7.6.1 or even 7.5.2 firmware. The new firmware definitely struggles with this setup.. you can see the horror stories in the posts around here. It gives range and throughput issues.. although since it only just came out, I am guessing the issue existed prior to that.. or is this new problem??
When you have a reasonably large network, do as much as you can over ethernet.
For example, if you have ethernet running to the AE near the ATV, are you using ethernet on the ATV?
You are going to hate me.. (that is ok.. lots do!!)
But to fix this up you are going to need to start over. And you are going to need to take full control of the wireless network. That means all the auto settings in the TC and the express used as AP have to be manually set by you.
You are "der führer" of the network. (toothbrush moustache optional).
You also need to use a better utility than v6.. if you really want to see what is going on.. (v6 is a toy.. it has no ability to access the logging on any apple router.. why apple why??) Do you have a computer running Lion or earlier OS? If so just use 5.6 utility.
What cable modem do you have? Is the wireless still active on that? If so you have far too much wireless going on. Kill the wireless in the cable router.
Take the TC and all the express units back to 7.6.1 firmware (the TC itself maybe back to 7.5.2 as you can upgrade again later if necessary). You will need to do it one by one with the device plugged into the computer I think.. that is the only reliable and safe way at least.
What version express are they?? The new type A1392 or the older A1264?
Once you have done that.. set up the TC.
Use all SMB names.. that is, short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.
eg TC name. .TCGen3
Wireless name TC24ghz for 2.4ghz.. and use TC5ghz for 5ghz wireless.. set name under wireless network options.
Use WPA2 Personal security only.. a passkey of 12 or so characters is generally plenty. pure alphanumeric mix of upper and lower case plus numbers.
Finally radio channels.. Please set these yourself. There are only 3 non-overlapping channels at 2.4ghz, 1, 6, 11 (13 in Aus). We will set each AP to one of these channels.. but 5ghz will also have to be set.. use the lower range, 36, 38, 40.. any of them is probably ok.. range is not that good anyway.
Once you have that setup and marked to allow the network to be extended, you can then setup the express to connect either by wireless to extend wireless.. remember this has a big impact on speed and should be avoided as far as possible.
With those ones that are working as AP plugged in by ethernet. Use identical name.. identical security and password.. but different channel. So use say 6 for the TC, channel 1 for AE1 and channel 11 or 13 for AE2.. the extend will be also on 6 so that won't matter.. if the AE are new dual band type.. also set the 5ghz name and security to match the TC but with different channels.
Do you hate me yet??
You can email me direct and I will try and help you if you have some questions.

  • After receiving "identical" Time Capsule 3rd gen replacement, my iMac no longer sees my HP LaserJet2420 that my previous Time Capsule enabled seeing

I no longer remember how my USB-connected HP laser printer was seen with my iMac connected through Time Capsule.  Oddly enough, my iMac also no longer sees the printer when connected directly to iMac.  What the heck happened?  They used to work fine together!

A printer that is directly connected has to be recognised to be installed..
I guess the first thing to do is open system profiler and check that the USB is recognising the printer.. If so then the issue is purely drivers.. if not it is bad usb cable.. bad usb port.. bad printer. Plug it into the computer via a powered usb hub.
If the USB does see the printer but the drivers don't work.. I stand by the comment.. delete all printers and start again.. multiple printers can mess things up equally as well as old drivers.. especially if you did an upgrade install.
What a shame you didn't buy the network version.. in the future.. never buy usb.. always buy network printers. Any printer called a workgroup printer without network is a contradiction in terms.
Once you get it working on the computer then you need to start all over again to get it running on the TC again.. man ethernet or wireless printer looks better and better all the time. usb .. shudder.

  • Previous Time Capsule files

I was using a Lacie external drive to backup with Time Machine.. just bought a Time Capsule and have removed the Lacie drive-- is there a way i can get the older Time MAchine files from the Lacie to the Time Capsule??.. there are about 3 months worth of backups on that Lacie-

Not with Apple software that I know of.
Personally, I would just start backing up using the new Time Capsule.
I would also plug your Lacie into the Time Capsule via USB if capable and use the Lacie as another backup device in your network. Leave your old Time Machine files on the Lacie for now so they are available to you until you decide to erase them.
Just a thought and my opinion.

  • Safari history - how to restore from Time Capsule?

    Background...
I couldn't open Safari today (beachballing with no window opening whatsoever), presumed the "com.apple.Safari.plist" file was corrupted so deleted it from "~/Library/Preferences", and restored a copy using Time Machine from my Time Capsule from yesterday before I had the issue. Safari settings from yesterday restored and working.
    However...
My Safari History going back 2 years has deleted to just one month ago! How can I restore these from a previous Time Capsule backup? Is it just "History.plist" file from "~/Library/Safari" that needs to be restored, or also the one titled "HistoryIndex.sk" in the same location, and/or any others?
Also, do I need to restart machine after restoring all files needed, or should the history show immediately after just relaunching Safari?
Note: I tried doing the "History.plist" one only, yet still just get the one month of history showing. This is really urgent as I have sites in my 2 year browsing history I need to get to again!
Help very very gratefully received :-\

Though I am still finding that with circa 2 years worth of history, they may be starting to delete from the back-end after a while; so I presume there may be a theoretical max amount of sites and/or dates Safari will keep in there regardless of setting "Manually" for history deletion.
I doubt there's a maximum size specific to the History plist, but that (or corruption of it) would be the only limitation. And yes, plists do get corrupted with some frequency.
And I don't know, either, what would happen if the plist got to a maximum; whether you'd get a message, or it would drop the oldest entries.
That must be a huge+ file after 2 years! It's a bit surprising that it hasn't gotten corrupted before.
If your browsing history is that important, I'd suggest finding some other way to keep it that long, such as bookmarking the critical sites. That would take much less room (and be less subject to corruption) than the history of every site you've ever visited, every time.
And/or, there might be a 3rd-party app that would help. I don't know of any, but it might be worthwhile to look for one.

  • Got new Time Capsule. Where is the Wifi setting gone?

I just got a new Time Capsule and restored my old configuration from my previous Time Capsule. After rebooting I saw that there is no option to change the speed of the Wifi networks anymore. Is it really so? How can I access the settings of the Wifi networks? All I get is that:
There used to be an option about the network type. 802.11n, b, g, etc...Where is it now?

As I said, it is no longer possible to select different 802.11 settings on the new Time Capsule and new AirPort Extreme.
If you have a version of AirPort Utility 5.6, you can see the different settings, but it is not possible to update the new Time Capsule or AirPort Extreme to use those settings.

  • The new Time Capsule is amazing

I just got my new Time Capsule with 2TB storage. It replaced the previous generation Time Capsule, again with 2TB of storage.
In my network I have a Retina Macbook Pro (early 2013 model) and a 11" Macbook Air (mid 2013). My internet connection is 150Mbit/sec download and 5Mbit/Upload.
With the previous Time Capsule my rMBP would achieve a maximum of 15MB/sec download and my MBA 16,5/sec.
Now, with the new Time Capsule, my rMBP achieved a whopping 17MB/sec!!! I still haven't tested the MBA, but I am confident it can achieve up to 18MB/sec (my maximum download speed).
I can only say that I am amazed how good the new Time Capsule is. Kudos to Apple!

The Gen1 hard disk was a noisy beast although you would have to be up close to hear it still. Modern slow green drives are much better and run cooler.
The new TC runs the standard WD green drive.
See the review here which has a tear down included.
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/4577/airport-extreme-5th-gen-and-time-capsule-4th- gen-review-faster-wifi-/4
The problem in Gen1 was a philosophy and a take over by the Interior Decorators at Apple rather than the Engineers. The excellent fan control built into the unit was dismissed as Overheated Engineer Imagination.. OEI for short. The fact that they stuffed a hard disk and power supply into a box slightly bigger than the Extreme.. had nothing to do with subsequent problems.. gollum.. gollum.. according to the Interior Decorator department. Engineers did actually calculate the reactor melt down temperature and turned on the fan to prevent said event.. they turned it on at 100% speed and 100% noise. Because it was seconds away from disaster..
Gen4 the design finally used the fan properly and offers some proportional control.. but you cannot expect no noise out of a plastic box dissipating 30W when it is doing the full job, backups, routing, wireless, gigabit. It still fails in having no fresh air inlet. So stand it on feet to stop the heat build up underneath.
During normal duties though and in normal weather.. you will hardly ever hear it.

  • WPA2-PSK and time capsule

My Modem uses only WPA - PSK and my Time capsule (3rd Gen) does not seem to be able to connect to its network.
Is this a Time Capsule limitation and if so does the latest TC allow connection to this type of security.
If possible - what options do i need to select.
At the moment i have it ethernet connected to the modem but would like it wireless if possible.

You really need to connect by ethernet.. The TC cannot extend wireless from any brand but Apple.. if you attempt to join the wireless it will effectively make the TC a slow dumb client.. no ethernet and no wireless AP.. Apple do not support it.
Plugged in by ethernet or buy another apple router.. eg an older Gen4 extreme or Gen5 and plug that in by ethernet and make a wireless bridge to that using the TC.

  • Problem with new Time Capsule w/ 7.5 Firmware Slow Speeds on 802.11b/g

I purchased a new 1TB Time Capsule with v. 7.5 Firmware last week. This Time Capsule is replacing a first gen 500GB TC with Firmware v. 7.4.2. I have 2 Macbook Pros connecting to the new Time Capsule via 802.11n at 5Ghz and 2 iPhones and 1 first gen Mac Pro connecting to it via 802.11b/g at 2.4Ghz. The Macbook Pros connecting at 5Ghz move data fine. The connection is very fast. Speedtest.net average about 20Mbps down and 2Mbps up. The devices connecting on the 2.4Ghz radio are slow as molasses. They test at less than 30k down and 30k up. Beyond that they have trouble moving data around the LAN as well. There are no sources of major interference near the TC. In fact the TC is in the same location as the old unit which was also running at 2.4Ghz with no problems. I contacted Apple tech support and then went to a local Apple store for an exchange. They gave me another new TC but the problem persists with the new units as well. This evening I took the new Time Capsule into the basement and isolated from any kind of interference with no success. I plugged in the old TC and the 802.11g devices were back up to speed.
Has anyone had any similar issues with the new AE or Time Capsule? I'm sure it's not unheard of to get two defective units but it's not likely. So I am thinking there may be an issue with the new firmware. I tried to downgrade to 7.4.2 but the new units require 7.5. Any suggestions? All network settings are the same as they were with the previous Time Capsule. The only thing that's changed is that both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz radios are active.

    Hi there,
got some problems with Time Capsule and 7.5 Firmware as well. Since it is my first device, I have no experience with older firmwares or models though.
It is impossible to connect to the 5GHz network. Neither when I have 5GHz and 2.4Ghz in one network or when I set a separate network for the 5GHz.
I always get a timeout message, I also tried deactivating the guest network and I also tried without any password, just would not connect to the 5GHz. By the way, I am sitting 50cm away from the TC and of course, I do have a MacBook Pro that supports 802.11n standard, a brand new MacBook Pro 13.
So, any ideas? I'm going to call Apple on Monday, can't check if it's the notebook, cause I do not have a second device to test ist. My iPhone works fine (802.11g), the 2.4Ghz also works fine with rates around 130-145 usually when close to the TC.
I also noticed that my MacBook Pro won't connect to the 802.11n when compatibility with 802.11b/g is activated. Then it runs with 802.11g instead....
pretty annoying, thought this would work right away?!

  • Time Capsule Ethernet Help

    Hi
I'm trying to set up a Time Capsule to connect to the router via Ethernet and let me do my initial backup through Ethernet to my computer and then be able to do wireless backups after that. And I will be able to connect to the internet wirelessly.
Now my problem is Everybody tells me that if I plug my router(NETGEAR) into my Time Capsules WAN port via Ethernet and set it up to extend the network that It would work. But When I plug it into the WAN port and choose that option it gives me a list of available devices(routers) that are connected via ethernet. My router is not there. All I see is "Previous Time Capsule Config".
Now what? No matter what I do I can get it to pick up my router via ethernet.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to bridge the Time Capsule.
Go to the top menu Internet and select connect using ethernet and then below that, connection sharing.. choose bridge mode.
Now it doesn't matter what port the TC is plugged into the main router. And wireless can be setup as you like.. but you are not extending the wireless. You are using it as a simple AP.
Does the Netgear have wireless? If so you can use manual channel setup in the TC .. just use a different channel to the Netgear.

  • Can't "inherit" prior Mac's Time Capsule Time Machine backup

It's getting ridiculous. Tried half-dozen times, tried Pondini's instructions, just doesn't seem to work. I never get the "Inherit the backups?" question and my new computer starts a new full backup.
Probably I've screwed up the drive by now.
It's a 2 TB Time Capsule set up as Time Machine with my old MBPro running Mountain Lion.  There's lots of space used (the old backup). The new computer has it's own Mtn Lion setup and new applications and a new USER (me). I have tried using Igration Assistant to migrate the SETTINGS only, because I read that would trigger the "Inherit the Backups?" question.
It completeed the migrration successfully, but no question.  When I start a new backup I do not get the question either, jsut the beginning of a 95GB backup.
Is this doable?  Can someone clarify or simplify?
I want to baack up to the old set, or at least access the old backup set to recover some few files that were not transferred previously (by another non-Time Machine backup)

Using Ponderini's instructions #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting, I don’t succeed in reconnecting an existing time machine backup (time capsule).
The previous TM backup was made from a macbockpro under OS 10.6.8 on a time capsule. I change to a new MBP that run on os 10.9 and I want to use my previous time capsule backups.
With my new MBP I can access to previous backup using Browse Other Backup Disks option, but I an’t succed using the B6 to keep previous backup.
    I’ve done first :
    sudo rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist —> succeed
sudo tmutil inheritbackup /Volumes/Data/Macintosh.sparsebundle —> succeed (Filesystem clean, ect..)
    sudo tmutil associatedisk -a / /Volumes/Copies\ de\ sauvegarde\ Time\ machine/Backups.backupdb/Macintosh/2013-12-20-133156/MacBookGG1T —> succeed
I reconfigure TM preference by choosing the appropiate Time capsule  (« data »)
When I activate TM, the Time Machine preferences do not indicate that any prior backups were available
I reboot like proposed by Eric, same problem.
    Then I tried:
    sudo rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist —> succeed
    ## Then I mount the sparebundle
    sudo tmutil inheritbackup /Volumes/Copies\ de\ sauvegarde\ Time\ machine/Backups.backupdb/Macintosh —> succeed
    sudo tmutil associatedisk -a / /Volumes/Copies\ de\ sauvegarde\ Time\ machine/Backups.backupdb/Macintosh/2013-12-20-133156/MacBookGG1T —> succeed
I reconfigure TM preference by choosing the appropiate Time capsule  (« data »)
When I activate TM, the Time Machine preferences do not indicate that any prior backups were available
    I reboot, same problem.
Do you have any idea to overcome this problem ?

  • Time Capsule used as router attached to Comcast Modem. wireless stops working. All I have to do is unplug the TC and plug it back in and TC cycles up and have green light as well as the Comcast modem operates correctly. TC 4 yrs old. How do I correct?

Time Capsule used as router attached to Comcast Modem. Wireless stops working with no light showing and Link indicator on modem off.
All I have to do is unplug the TC and plug it back in.
TC cycles up and green light appears as well as the Comcast modem operates correctly.
TC 4 yrs old. How do I correct?

I have the latest and greatest Time Capsule and Comcast. Here is the weird thing. If I have one network set up, then occasionally that network will wedge. If I set up a 5GHz and a 2.4GHz network, then one of them (usually the 5GHz) will wedge. I saw this with a previous Time Capsule, Apple said call Comcast. They checked it out and said it was Apple's problem. Apple said maybe you Time Capsule is bad, so I bought a new one. The problem persists.
Tonight it's not complely wedged, but super slow. The 5GHz network is getting 0.45Mb/s while the 2.4GHz network is getting 17Mb/s. Both are coming in from the same Comcast cable modem. Apparently the Time Capsule treats them as separate.
Is it the cable modem or the Time Capsule. I am betting on the Time Capsule, since rebooting it fixes the problem. Resetting the cable modem does not.
Apple is NO HELP at all. They say reset the Time Capsule. Did that fix it? Yes. Problem solved! No, problem not solved. It will happen again in a few hours.

  • XP can login to time capsule without security but limited conn with WPA

I added a time capsule to my network at home ( previously only an airport express). I got 2 macbook and a PC to work fine with the TC ( as a router), however, I still have issue with the last pc.
When I do not specify any security level ( no encryption), the pc can connect to the internet via the TC. When I specify WPA/WPA2, I get a limited connectivity warning for the PC, and internet does not work.
It used to work fine with the airport express.
It works fine if I connect the PC to TC via ethernet.
note : airport utility can't see the Time Capsule on the PC.
    Any ideas?

    Jan,
I tried something and actually had some success. I'm now able to connect the new Dell running Win 7 to my network with WPA2 turned on.
    Here's what I did:
    1) I downgraded the firmware on my TC to 7.3
    2) I then reset the TC back to factory settings (this did not erase any of my data)
    3) I reset up the TC by creating my network (just gave it the name I had before resetting) and turned on WPA2 security.
    4) I then connected the new Dell and much to my surprise, it worked.
So, I don't know if it was the downgrading of the firmware or resetting the TC to factory settings, or perhaps a combination of the two that did the trick but it's now working. When I tried to troubleshoot this a couple of months ago I did try to downgrade the firmware, but I don't think I went back as far as 7.3 so perhaps that was a factor. I also had not tried resetting the thing back to factory settings before this last attempt.
I'm still not able to get the old Dell (with Win XP) to connect but fortunately I don't care much about that one being able to connect.
You might want to give these a try as well and see if it makes a difference. Good luck!

I've changed from a Macbook to a iMac because that one stopped working and I cannot use it anymore. I've been able to import all the data of the last backup of the Macbook when setting the new iMac, but I cannot access now to the old backups of the Macbook and there are information that wasn't in the last backup and I would like to recover. Yes, you can ..

  • Can I use a Time Capsule for ADDITIONAL storage for a Mac Air which has run limited storage space

    Hi
I am looking at purchasing the current MacBook Air but am aware of its limited storage space in terms of files, photos etc.
Was wondering if I could use a time Capsule for both back-up and as an additional storage device.  Ie: would I be able to store photos and files on the Time Capsule that I do not wish to store on a MacBook Air and be able to retrieve them as and when - or would these be deleted after a period of time?  Is there any way of protecting certain files on the Time capsule to prevent them from being deleted?
    Many thanks in advance

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can but it's not recommended, because you can damage the Time Machine structure.

Only files backed up with Time Machine are deleted from your Time Capsule when there's no enough storage. If you store other files, they are not deleted. However, for what you want to do, I recommend you to buy a big external drive and make two partitions, one for Time Machine and another one to store files, or get two external drives

    Arguably, they're both right.
Changing your router changes everything, so your best course of action is to research the respective printer's documentation and determine how to reset them to factory default condition. Then, add them again using System Preferences > Print & Scan.
For that, I recommend you first "reset the printing system" according to these instructions: Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system. Its instructions for Lion are identical to those for Mountain Lion.
As the article states, it will remove all your existing printers, leaving the Mac's printing system in a similar "factory default" condition ready for you to create a new print queue for each printer, which you should probably do.
Apple's printing support documents contain a great deal of redundancy, but this one may be a good place to start: OS X Mountain Lion: Set up a printer to print wirelessly
