Previously burned cds now read as "blank CDs"

long story short, i bought this computer SLIGHTLY used, it basically sat around at a friend's house before. i'm barely familiar with macs and may not know all the terms.
i had this computer for quite some time and eventually the hard drive died on me, just recently got it replaced. and they installed 10.4. when i got home i installed itunes latest version and checked for all software updates. i've been able to upload normal cds, but when i try to insert several previously burned cds they show up as a blank cd and ask me what to do. or when i was finally able to burn an mp3 cd, i tried re-inserting it, and it shows up blank as well, is this some kind of software update or setting i can change, please tell me it is!
thanks....

See if this helps and welcome to the discussions.

  • Previously burned data DVD comes up "blank"

My previously burned data DVD's are now coming up as "untitled"  and blank. However, my dvd will read a movie DVD. These discs are perfectly clean of smudges/scratches. These discs open fine on my other iMac.
The DVD will read data and music cds.  Why would it not read all my DVD-r back up discs? Help, please.
I've ran the utility to repair permissions, and shut down-unplugged for 15-replugged and started up. No difference.
    The DVDs are DVD-r
My iMac as 27" 2.8 Intel Core i7
    My system is 10.6.8
    Firmware Revision:          3AHB

Not yet, but again I cannot see the relevance to dust particles being the issue if the laser reads video DVDs just fine. And it reads CDs just fine.
Maybe this has something to do with the DVDs? These are stored stacked inside a plastic container in a cabinet.
I am leaning more in the area of a defective SuperDrive or at leaset in the Superdrive firmware? Something set this off, but I have not updated any software since this happened.
I'm heading out the door and will pick up a cleaning cloth. I seriousely doubt this is the issue but will try it for the sake of eliminating another step.
Thank you for your replies. Any other suggestions are surely welcome.

  • Burned CDs appear as Blank

    Hello, everyone,
Please excuse me if I repeat my question with someone else's (I did make a search though).
I've burned some CDs on my MacBook Pro 17'' about an year ago. I've played the same CDs without any problems. Long time past, I've made certain updates when the Sorftware Update indicated for such (if that's concerns this issue)...
And now, when I insert any of these previously burned CDs, they appear as Blank (any other CDs/DVDs play fine, except these ones).
    I'd appreciate any help!!!
    Kremena

The problem might be a dirty lens
I had the same problem. No burnt disk could be read (or burnt), but factory CD's could.
Cleaning the Superdrive (mac mini-intel 1st-gen) solved it for me. I used a cleaning cloth for glasses wrapped around a CD. A real CD-cleaner Disk or pressurized air might be a more recommended way of cleansing.
It might also be a too weak power supply, but that is not so likely with Macs.
Also take a look at this thread:

And read the "crazy solution" at post #9.

  • Burned CDs no longer play on imac G5 - commercial CDs play okay

My imac G5 is no longer recognizing any previously burned CDs. When I inset the CD I get "You've inserted a blank CD. Turn burn items on the CD....." etc. The CDs play okay in my CD player, just not on the imac.
The imac still recognizes and plays commercial CDs and CD ROMS.
I updated to iTunes+ two days ago. Since then I have been getting occasional "You're attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media." I have burned several CDs that also play on my CD player but will not play on the imac once the disc is injected and reinserted into the imac.
I have run the utilities disc and done repair file permissions. I have run the repair utility and get a "No problems found" result. I have also run a memorex cd cleaner disc.
I would suspect a hardware problem except it is only the discs I have burned that I get the "blank cd" notification.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? This is driving me nuts!!!!
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Phil

iMacs are notoriously picky about CDs and DVDs. I suggest you post to the iTunes forum, they are more likely to have experience with this sort of problem: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=789
although I looked through the old posts there and couldn't find an exact duplicate of your problem.
If you find a solution, please let us know,

  • OS Lion reading old burned CDs as Blank

I am going through some burned CDs and attempting to copy them to my new iMac, but each one is being read as a Blank CD. Regular factory audio CDs seem to work fine. Any type of home burned CD is being read as blank. Any insight on how to fix this would be appreciated, thanks.

How old are these CDs?  Burned CDs can go 'bad", especially if done onto inexpensive media.  I wouldn't expect that kind of failure rate though.  Still, if the drive reads regular media it isn't the drive as such.  I guess it could be the drive doesn't like your older CDs (it isn't a case of software), but usually it happened that old drives could not read  burned CDs and not new drives not being able to read older burned CDs.
Are these audio CDs and do they play on another audio player?

  • When trying to burn a playlist to a blank CD, iTunes 10.3.1 won't recognize the blank CD I've inserted (Verbatim CD-R). I've burned using these CDs before, this is a recent problem. Not the burner, as I can burn using Toast. iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.8

What kind of CD are you burning (Audio or MP3)?
If you're burning an MP3 CD, the songs must already
    be in mp3 format.
If not, iTunes will tell you that you have no songs
    in the playlist.
    M
I was making an audio cd. But I have since found out what the problem was. The files in my PLAYLIST I converted to aiff, since they were SDll files (I thought they were similar to AIFF, and they PLAY on Itunes...just won't burn.) When I selected the songs in the playlist and converted them...I thought all those files were converted, They were not. The converted files went into my LIBRARY, even tho I selected the ones in the playlist...and once I exchanged the SDll versions of the songs in my playlist. THEN they burned fine...but still...it's confusing..you say convert..it says it's been converted..and what they don't say is it's not been converted inside the playlist...where I had selected the songs...It just ADDED aiff versions..but only in the library...Anyway, that's what happened. But it's strange that it PLAYS SDll but won't burn them....and you'd think, logically..the ones you selected would change...but they don't. Playlists are mainly pointers to the actual files I guess...a sort of Alias..
At least it works now. But it's sad that the latest itunes does more, but also does LESS...as I used to be able to burn SDll files. Now I'll have to convert all my files to AIFF, and mp3's as I assume my ipod video won't play anything but mp3's?

  • Matshita DVD-R UJ 857-E (unable to burn CDs but reading DVDs and CDs)

I have had the macbook and burner for about three years.
I am unable to burn cds. When I attempt to do so in iTunes or Toast the error message reads "please insert a recordable cd". I have used the same cds to burn on other computers so I believe this is a problem with my drive and not the cds I'm trying to record to.
I am able to burn DVDs in Toast.
Any ideas? I'm looking for a driver right now...

I truly believe this is a software issue. I changed the system settings of the CD/DVD (system profiler) of "when inserting a blank CD to 'open finder' " ( u can use 'ask me' but I didn't have that option) instead of opening iTunes. Once the CD was mounted I was able to burn to the disk in iTunes as well as iPhoto. I was unable to that when I just inserted the disk from the program when prompted.

  • Device filter Problems, can't burn cds in iTunes, Blank CDs appear to have

Problem was first noticed because I can't burn CDs in iTunes.
The problem is that all blank CDs show that they have no space on them available. If I look at the properties of a blank CD, they show 0 bytes used, 0 bytes free and 0 bytes available.
By removing the upperfilters and lowerfilters in the registry, (accoring to the Microsoft prescribed method for this problem found at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060) the problem is solved for my whole sytem except for iTunes. iTunes then tells me that "the registry settings used by iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. ... Please reinstall iTunes."
I reinstall or repair iTunes and then iTunes opens fine but I can't burn with iTunes or any other program since I am back to all blank CDs showing there is no space available.
The iTunes toubleshooting Fac found at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302976 has been tried also and does not change the problem of blank CDs having no space available.

I cant burn cds using itunes but burns in window media.itunes up to date what now?

Join the crowd. I was thinking of going back to a previous version, but had heard that could be a problem. Fortunately, I have more than one computer and things work fine there. I'm thinking it could be the burner in the problem computer, but it was working just fine before the upgrade...

I bought a used PowerMacPC G5. I can burn and read DVDs, but I can't read or burn CDs. The CDs are not even recognized. After the drive searches for a while, the CD is ejected without any error messages. The CDs work okay on my iMac.
I am running Mac OSX 10.4.11. According to the System profiler the CD/DVD drive is a "PioneerDVD-RWDVR-112D." When I compare the information under this heading, the only unusual difference from my iMac is that the G5 reads "Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported)." My iMac reads "Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)."
Under the System Preferences the options are set to "Ask what to do" when a blank CD or DVD is inserted. Music CD set to open iTunes, Picture CD set to open iPhoto, Video DVD set to open DVD player.
    Do you have any suggestions?

Everytime I insert a blank CD into my iMac, it spits it out. How can I fix this so I can burn CDs?

Try using a LensCleaner Disk first off. If that won't even run try a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.
Then use the Lens Cleaner again. Make sure your disks are immaculately clean.
