Previously owned iPhone - can't get rid of apps?

Hello ladies and gents,
I am the proud new owner of an iPhone 3G (8G) and I have spent much of today adding my own music and apps.
Although the previous owner left music, films and apps on it I synced with my own iTunes and it was all wiped. When I downloaded new apps for it I had expected all the old ones to have been wiped, but no?
I have used the home screen and managed to delete some of the apps I didn't want. But even when selecting apps to add it wont remove the old.
I'd rather not restore factory setting, am I going to have to in order to get rid of the apps I don't want?

Not a chance I would sell or give my iPhone to someone else without restoring my iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone followed by not doing a sync, or going to Settings > General > Reset and selecting Erase All Content and Settings.
If you don't want to do a restore with iTunes, go to Settings > General > Reset and select Erase All Content and Settings. This will take a while, and follow this by syncing the iPhone with iTunes.

If the app is no longer installed on the iPad then you should get prompts about updates to it in the App Store app - as efectively there is nothing for it to update. If you are being prompted to download updates to them then are you sure that they are no longer on the iPad ?
If you are being prompted on your computer's iTunes then if you delete them for the App part of you computer's Library then you shouldn't be prompted about them.

If so, first, you may want to try the good ol' Repair Disk Permissions, in Disk Utility First Aid tab, on your startup disk. Don't worry if a lot of messages are displayed. Things that need to be fixed are being fixed, and the rest of the info is mostly "informational."
If that does not help, my only other idea is to get rid of the current Dock user preference file. This will "reset" the Dock an put it back to its initial default state. So any app icons you added/removed, and changes you made to the Dock's appearance, will be gone. It will look like it did when you first used your user account. If you want to do this...
I just tried this in my "Test User" user account, to confirm. First, you need to go into your user account Library folder. This folder is hidden starting with Lion, so from Finder's Menu Bar, select
Go -> Go to Folder...
In the field, enter
/Users/[your short user name]/Library
where [your short user name] is the name of your user home folder. And click Go. This will open a Finder window showing the contents of the hidden Library folder. Open the sub-folder named Preferences. Find the file named
com.apple.dock.plist
and drag it to the Desktop. Log out and log back in. The system should create a fresh Dock user preference file with the Dock in the initial default state. Hopefully, it won't have the same problems and you can update the Dock as desired.

Multiple calendars appeared on my iphone - can't get rid of them???

I'm not sure at all how this happened, but I have multiple calendars on my iphone which causes duplicate entries.
When I look at Calendars now, I have choices of All Calendars, All from my Mac, or All from MobileME.
There were other choices until I delete all but Calendar in iCal.
how in the world do you delete these calendars? The mobile me choices includes a bunch like Birthdays, Holidays, Home, Work etc... I only need one so I deleted all the others on my mac and they don't show up in Mobileme online but they DO on the iPhone..
very annoying... and I'm sure I screwed it up, but how to fix it???

How can i get rid of apps in the "purchased" section of app store on iphone

the new purchased section of itunes which i guess is a part of icloud, is storing apps that i did download onto my phone, and then delete them later on, and those apps are not stored in itunes on my computer!! im just wondering if there is a way that you can delete those apps from the "cloud"

In one of the help pages for managing your Apple ID (http://support.apple.com/kb/HE40), it shows two separate sections, one for Apple ID and one for Primary Email address. When I go to manage my Apple ID, I see only a single section for both. Can the two be 'separated', especially when you face the situation of having to discontinue your email address for some reason?
I also noticed that when navigating to Apple ID Support Communities, it shows my nickname 'dishdy'. How and when did I insert this? In the current sequence for creating an Apple ID I don't see this. In my current profile I don't see this.
In any case, I have freed myself from my previous Apple ID (@artemis.it) on my iPhone.

I'm still not clear about what you mean about unlocking your phone. Normally, "unlocking" means entering the password if the phone is locked, which you should be able to do from the phone itself. If you want more help with this, you really need to take the time to furnish all the relevant details.

When you do that & click on the iPhone in the list, then click on the "Apps" tab at the top, do you see the apps you can't update listed there? If you click on the "Store" menu item does it show near the bottom that you are logged in with your own Apple ID?
As wjosten said, it sounds like one way or another, the apps you cannot update were obtained using your friend's Apple ID. You need to delete them from your phone & try buying them again. If they were in fact paid for with your own Apple ID you won't have to pay again; otherwise you will.

Use Google and find some other unofficial copy. This is not supported by Apple (downgrading that is) and purely at your own risk. If you end up with one that has spyware, etc., it will be entirely your problem.

This worked for me with iPhone 5:
Backup iPhone in iTunes
in iPhone>Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and Settings
in iTunes> Restore iPhone with previous Backup (point 1)
There is no need to reset the iPhone with iTunes and no need to manually resync apps and content.
You will have your "new" iPhone with all your apps, settings and media just like before
with only a mere 500 mb (0,5gb) of "other" memory.

It seems this problem is caused by the software to increase the readibility of upper letters (clock battery etc.) It be nice to leave us the control of choosing background letter color too if we are using brighter images or darker images.
I'm using iphone 4s and it appeared after I updated to new patch. 7.1.1.
