Previously saved files refuse to open

Recently I have had 3 saved Pages files refuse to open because "the document does not have a valid format". Anyone else come across this and is there anything I can do to retrieve them?

This kind of thing is reported here quite often.
I wrote here many times that computers aren't perfect tools and that they may fail.
With pre-Lion systems, it's our duty to take care of our works.
Never save upon the file which we opened.
This is why I wrote an AutoSave script which save archived versions of works in progress every ten minutes.
With Lion, the system AutoSave by itself on the opened file. By default, Versions keep consecutive versions every hour which, from my point of view, isn't sufficient.
But, it would be a good idea to check if you have iWork '09 and iWork '08 installed on your machine.
Maybe, it's Pages '08 which try to open your files.

If you see the PDF files in iBooks, then you have saved them. If you don't see them in iBooks, they are not on the iPad.
Try transferring purchases before you sync with iTunes. Bit follow this with a sync, if iTunes does not sync on it's own.

  • How can I revert to a previous saved file?

    Hi,
I have been working on Word for Mac 2011 and have been saving continuously onto the same document as my work progresses. I always reference manually and somebody suggested I use footnotes to reference. This was too problematic as I needed to reference separately
at the end of three sections and footnotes was only allowing me one lot of references. So I copied and pasted my other two sections underneath the footnote referencing  and Word must have assumed it was part of the footnotes because when I completed my
work and went back to re-reference each section manually and delete the old footnote references, I lost all my work done underneath the footnotes! Now, I hear you can "revert to previous saved file" or some other such thing  to go back to a
previous save of the same document. Any help is greatly appreciated on how to do this!!
    Thanks,
    Ayema

If you haven't saved the document, pressing Command+Z will undo the paste.
If you have already saved the file then hopefully you have the option set in preferences to Always Create a Backup and in the folder where the original file is locate you will find a file name "Backup of..." the file name you are working on. This
will be a how the file looked prior to the last save.
If you don't have the Always Create a Backup option set, besides "Shame on You" then go to your Time Machine backup which should be no more than 1-hour old and you can get previous hours... assuming you have that function enable. If you don't then
    again... Shame on You!
If you have neither of these built-in options set then I pray you are using my
GotUrBack application running, which will protect you with up to 9 levels of backup of your saved version of the file.

And if you don't have any of the above set or running then I'm sorry to have to say... you are out of luck and have a great deal of file recreation to do.

  • Hi All, I recently bought a Mac Book Pro and transferred all my photos from my hard drive onto the Mac. I realised that there were some folders which didn't have the camera information embedded in the files and these files refuse to open on iPhoto. HELP!!

Hi All, I recently bought a Mac Book Pro and transferred all my photos from my hard drive onto the Mac. I realised that there were some folders which didn't have the camera information embedded in the files and these files refuse to open on iPhoto. I know that the folders that have the problem were not transferred to the hard drive via a photo transfer application (I have a Canon camera) but I simply copied them out of the photo card and onto my old PC.
Is there some way I can open these pictures on my Mac? They work fine on a PC.

    Thanks for your reply.
The files don't open in preview either. In preview I get the error message 'The file "xxxx_xxx.jpg" could not be opened. It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn't recognize'. The folders with these un-openable pictures do not even get imported into iPhoto. When I try to import them I get an error message about the files being unreadable.
The color profile information on the un-openable files is not visible but I see that all the other files from my old drive are RGB.

  • Most current update of Photoshop - will not open any of my previously saved files?

I have the most current update of Photoshop CC, but it will not open any files that I have previously saved. They will not open if i use the Open command or if I try and open them from the folder. I cannot create new files either. Is there something I need to fix to get this to work again? I need this for work.

  • Pages (iWorks '09) version is hanging on opening files as well as saving files.  On opening it eventually opens but on Saving it will never save.

All of a sudden today, Pages has developed a problem on opening and saving files on my Macbook Pro 13.  I tried updating to the newest version of Pages weks ago but it really messed with the formatting of documents I had already been using so I am working from the iWorks 09 version of Pages.  I can't use the newest version.   To complete my background, I use Pages every day sometimes several times a day and that has been true all along up to yesterday.
When opening any saved Pages files, to include a blank pages document, the program hangs up for over a minute with the spinning wheel.  I have no other programs running.  Once the document opens, I can work as usual and nothing is slowed.  Upon saving, the spinning wheel comes up and the program will not save.  I have had it open for 10 minutes or more with the spinning wheel and Pages refuses to Save.  I have to Force Quit Pages.  Now when the spinning wheel comes up on Save, I can do anything else with my computer I want.  The other programs on the laptop are not affected.  Saving is not affected on other programs.
I read on another forum to try Keynote to see if there is a problem with all of iWorks 09.  I did that and Keynote works perfectly with no problems opening and saving files like a champ.  I have turned my laptop off and then on and the problem continues.
I also read to delete the plist files in Preferences and let Pages rebuild.  I did that and the problem continues.  I then read to use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.  I did that and the problem continues.
I have not reloaded Pages from my purchase disk but I've also read that that doesn't necessarily eliminate problems that might be elsewhere.  Thank you in advance for your help.

As the day progressed, all other files quit being able to save to the desktop.  As I tried to diagnose the issue, I went through the Repair Disk in Disk Utilities and was told by that program to close and use the disk repair from Recovery HD (CMD + R upon reboot).  I did that and was eventually told the HDD was too far gone to repair.  I reformatted and restored from Time Machine following the instructions given.  All is good now after 24 hours of work.  I have no idea what happened but I'm not feeling real safe about my mac today.  I have an SSD on order.

  • Cannot open a previous saved file

Hi, I had some trouble because from my iPad Numbers app I cannot open anymore a file where I stored important data.
This happened without warnings, just appear a message saying "Cannot open file" while selecting the file
The problem is the file also disappear into the iCloud document section, where are all the other files I also have in my iPad...
On the iPad, within the Numbers app I still can see the document icon (is different from all the other with a small grey corner with an arrow inside on top right - does it mean something special?) but I don't know if there is a way to ricover the file.
Also tried to share the file (e-mail, iTunes, etc.) but the file appears as "null" and nothing happen while starting the sharing procedure...
Somebody knows similar issues and the way to ricover the missed files?
How can I follow to trust this app?
    Thanks,
    zaverio

    Hi zaverio,
On the Mac, the "small grey corner with an arrow inside" indicates the icon is an alias to the file, not the file itself. The alias is a pointer to the location of the file. My guess would be that either the actual file is not on your iPad, or the connection between the alias and the file has been broken.
I'v requested this question be transferred to the iWork for iOS community, where you're more likely to find a definitive answer, and, I hope, a solution.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Recovering previously saved files

I just finished a paper and was saving as I went along. When I went to email the file to someone ten pages had been erased and I had saved the document that way. Is there any way to get the full document back or am I doomed to another day of paper writing?!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
It depends. If you had AutoSave turned on & AppleWorks crashed, you might find
If you did one of two things while this file was open in AppleWorks - renamed the file in the Finder or moved the File in the Finder - not likely. Either of these will "break" AppleWorks connection to the file. Unless you had a program running in the background that records keyboard input, I'm afraid your work is lost & you will have to re-do it. There are two user tips dealing with this:
Dale Gillard - Document content not saved
Vic Menard - AppleWorks fails to save properly

  • Firefox will not open more than one window and upon restarting will not open the previous tab and refuses to open bookmarks

Firefox does not open more than one window. I can open plenty of tabs, but not more than one window. Upon closing firefox and trying to restart the browser will not open and needs to be closed through windows task manager. Upon trying to re-open Firefox I receive the 'oops this is embarassing , firefox cannot re-open your tabs" message. When I click on "new session" the bookmarks do not load. It is becoming very frustrating as I am a student and often do lots of research on the web while using lots of open windows.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
    See also "Hang at exit":

  • Saved file will not open

When trying to open some files I get the error: "could not read the file because the plug-in could not understand this file"
I've posted this before and the answer I got was "save locally, not the network". I did this (it was happening in CS2 at the time) and the problem occurred less frequently, but still happened.
I'm now using CS3 and am in a production environment so I have to save to a network drive. And the issue is occurring regularly, forcing me to close and reopen Illustrator to be able to open these files.
Is there a real solution to this? It's driving me bonkers.
    TIA

Is this related to iOS (iPads and iPhones)?
This is the iMovie iOS forum, so if you're in the wrong place I can get this question moved.
In iMovie iOS there is only one way to export video, and that is Quicktime H264.
You will need the latest version of Quicktime for Windows.

  • ????Desktop files refuse to open????

*(My OS has spoiled me rotten LOL)*
What am I doing incorrectly? All my applications on my desktop are unopenable; which, this was proven due to to all still working within the disk as well as the dock.
    I have:
    Onyx'd
Restarted from Disk, first aid' then restarted
    PRAM'd the sys
I am getting clues of this being either an index issue or user problem.
Thank you for your help, lisa s kelly

    Hi Lisa,
    Might be a corrupted Desktop preference file which is an easy fix. Locate this file;
com.apple.desktop.plist It's here: MacintoshHD/User/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder, locate that file, drag it to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot.
Also, at the same time you are in the Preferences folder, locate this file too:
com.apple.recentitems.plist That file can cause Desktop glitches also... same routine... trash and reboot.
    See if helps...

  • I can't get a previously saved number spreadsheet to open.

I can't get a numbers spreadsheet to open in the new numbers program.

    Hello,
    just an additional question:
What are the recommended parameters to be set in the lightroom preferences for PSE9 for
    - File format (I can choose between psd and TIFF)
    - color space (I can choose between adobe RGB, Pro photo RGB, sRGB)
    - Bit depth (8 bit, 16 bit)
    - resolution
in order to make sure all modifications from PSE9 are coming back to LR.
(I am using dng as a standard file format in LR, most photos are from a conon 450D)
    Thanks for you answer

  • Recover previously saved files

    Hi -
I've been working in GarageBand and previous work was lost.
I was wondering if there was any way for me to go into the harddrive and recover any previously save versions of this project.  I lost a lot of work!
I did not have time machine on at the time, and this is just work that I did yesterday.
    Any suggestions?
    thank you,

    Stop using your MBP.
Material that has been put into and emptied in trash will remain ion the HDD until over written.
Download from the Intranet data recovery software and see if they can help your. situation,  There are NO guarantees.
If the data is really critical, you can engage a professional data recovery firm.  It will be very expensive with NO guarantees.
As you now appreciate, backups are very important.
    Ciao.

  • I have to change computers, but my iPhone is synched to the one in my office.  How do I synch it to a new computer and not lose all my previously saved files in iTunes or iCloud?

I heard that if you sych your iPhone from a new computer, it overwrites or throws out the things that you stored before.  I don't want that to happen, so what do I do?  I am changing jobs and the best computer I had before was the one at work, so I synched there.  I found pictures I just took already on the computer, so it is actively synching.
