Price for apple displays

hey. I am new to apple products, but am think of upgrading to a mac fairly soon. I was just wondering why apple displays are so expensive. I am willing to pay for a good display and like the apple's disign, but it seems to me that larger displays from other companies are much cheaper. please explain...

Hi-
It's not only larger that counts.
Apple is fairly expensive, but if you look at other HD, (true)widescreen displays, there are not that many that are directly comparible. This is espacially true in the performance spec comparison- you have to compare HD widescreen to HD widescreen- 4:3 ratio LCD's are numerous, many with higher performance specs, but they are not HD widescreen......
Also, you have to admit that the design IS very sexy- and the aluminum housing does cost more to produce than a poly/plastic/acrylic housing.......
Aimed at the higher end market (as are G5's), all the clean, beautiful design, ergonomics, and excellent function, demand a higher price.
I am not a "high ender", but, the Apple Cinema Display was, and is, my first choice.

  • Cheaper Price for Apple Care

I bought my MacBook Pro almost a year ago.
Now, I've decided I want to purchase the Apple Care package.
If I'm not mistaken - since it's been less than a year I can get a chepaer price for the Apple Care.
I might be mistaken and if more than a year passes I don't pay more for Apple Care - but I just can't buy it...
Does anyone has an answer for me?

No, you don't get a reduced price for waiting.
You can, however, shop around. Amazon and B&H and other sites usually have AppleCare available at a discount from what Apple directly charges.

  • Response times for apple displays

    Hi,
am in the market for a 20-22" LCD monitor for our G4 machine. Sometime we'll upgrade the machine to a faster intel-mac. I have been hunting around for good deals on LCD's and while most other vendors seem to list their response times, I did not see them for the Apple displays. Any notes on where to find them?
Also am looking at Dell and their response times seem quite slow (15-16 ms) for the 2007WFP or just the FP displays. While Samsung and a host of others are typically below 8ms. I do understand there are "tricky" ways of measuring these number, but 15-16ms seems pretty slow to me, and since my teen agers play a lot of games on the machine, seems like I should go for faster #'s.
That said, any recommendations on other brands? Apple's are very pricey, but nice looking too.
    thx
    'mark

    m_ahienius,
    14 ms.
    See http://www.apple.com/displays/specs.html
If you can afford a 23-inch display, go for it. I have owned both the 20-inch Apple LCD and the 23-inch. Bigger is better.
The real question is "why do you care about response time?". It is only meaningful for watching movies and playing games. Not for "ordinary" work.

  • Windows Graphics Card for Apple Display (23")

I gave my wife my 23" Cinema Display when I bought my 30". She is using an Alienware that is about 2 years old. The computer works fine except that the monitor must be unplugged when she starts it up or it will not boot. She will normally unplug the monitor, hit the power button, and wait for the mouse to light up before plugging the monitor in. She is becoming quite frustrated.
Anyone know a trick to get it fixed and it not, do you know how to be sure we wont have the same probably if we get a new graphics card? I'm assuming hers does not support DDC but when I look on Nvidia's website, they don't really say any of their cards do. She is happy with the card she has except for this issue so I would hate to buy a new one if we don't have to.
    Thanks,

A search of this forum (or of the web) should return many hits for posts regarding which peecee video cards are compatible with the Apple displays. As you have discovered, not all are. And not all "compatible" cards give the same results. For example, some will display the windoze boot screens and some will not.

  • Thunderbolt extension cable for apple display?

I was so excited when I received my Promise Pagasus raid system. But there is a problem:
I have a macbook pro, an Apple thunderbolt display and now I would like to daisy chain the Pegasus between the display and the computer. The problem is that the cable coming from the display is extremely short after the point where it splits up. Unless I put the Pegasus (a large box) right next to my laptop on the desk (no room for that) I cannot daisy chain. A thunderbolt extension cable would do the trick, but they do not exist?
I am sure somebody else has run into this problem, please share your solution.
    Thank you!

    - Just to verify... your MacBook Pro "HAS" Thunderbolt, correct??
    - You already have a "Thunderbolt Display"????   How did you manage that?  I haven't seen any in any store yet or heard of anyone else getting them yet.
    Danielle Smit wrote:
The display has 3 cables going into the mac:
    1. thunderbolt (this is where the data goes through)
    2. usb (provides the usb connection to the hub on the back of display)
    3. power (provides power to computer)
Are you saying there is a "USB" cable/connector coming from the display??  If so, that is NOT a Thunderbolt display.
From everything documented, the Thunderbolt display looks like this:  (the only cables built-in are the normal A/C power cable, then one main cable that has (2) plugs at the end... 1) the magnetic power adapter that connects to laptops... and 2) a Thunderbolt plug.
Is this what your display looks like?
*** OR ****   Does Your display ACTUALLY look like this one (which is the older 24-inch LED Cinema Display):  This one actually had a USB cable/plug as one of the "Built-In" cables.  If this IS what you actually have, it is NOT a Thunderbolt display, although it WILL still work with laptops and the hard drives that DO have Thunderbolt.

  • What is the price for Apple Pages?

How much does Apple Pages cost?

It depends upon how you get it.
If you purchase the iWork pack which also includes Numbers and Keynote from the Apple Store or third party sellers it has a price of $79.
If you purchase Pages via the Mac App Store it is $19.99.
If you purchase Pages for an iPad/iPhone/iTouch it runs a bit less $9.99.

  • Price for Apple Extreme Base Station

I am lookin to buy one of these, and Best Buy is the closest store to me that carries them.  The problem is why are they charging $189 for it? I can buy it directly from Apple for $179! Same goes for the Airport Express.  Apple sells them for $99, Best Buy $109? What's with the guaging, "Best Buy"?

It's not really an "issue".  Some people would consider a slight price increase if they can walk into a real store, and go hands on with the product, plus have a place where they can go to return the item or deal with any issues encountered.  Best Buy is a company, and like any other comapny, wants to be profitable.  If the product you are interested in is selling for a higher price, then that means that there are foiks willing to pay that price.
I still say that if you go into the store and politely ask them to price match based upon your research, you might be pleasantly surprised.  If, on the other hand, you go into the store demading a price match and accusing the store of price gouging, then I think it's likely nou'll not get very far.

  • External non Apple Displays for Macbookpro

Looking for 22-24" external display for macbook 17" -- uses: photography, video editing and showing, lots of word processing and some spreadsheet work, occasionally a game. $900 for Apple display just too much, let alone $1799 for larger Apple. Nice, but no cigar. So what is good and competitive in price out there and compatible (really) with the Pro?

So what you are saying is you want us to do the same Google searching, find what you want (how would we even know what that may be) then give you the information. But you can't (or won't) do that. But, I'm offensive for suggesting you do that yourself. Since I'm being so offensive why not add to that:
The Apple Discussions are a user-to-user collection of forums to provide help with Apple products. It is not a "buying service" to help users purchase non-Apple products nor to provide help with non-Apple products.
You can find what you want by doing some research. It takes some time and effort. If you were willing to see things from a different perspective you would see that you are simply saying you want me (or someone else) to do what you aren't willing to do - as opposed to doing something you are unable to do.
If that's really offensive then I apologize, and, you're right, this response is hardly worth my trouble.

  • Apple TV compatible Apple Displays?

Hello, I am buying an Apple TV 3rd Gen and am wondering, What Apple Displays can it work with? I am looking for any Apple displays (even old ones) that work with Apple TV 3. Thanks.

Is there a specific need for Apple displays. There are no HDMI-based Apple displays, AFAIK. There are Apple DVI displays, which would need a HDMI-to-DVI converter for video and Optical for audio, but HDCP will become problematic in this case.

  • All Things Being Equal, Is the Apple Display The Best Monitor For A Mac

Let's put price aside for a second....
Is the Apple Display the best monitor to hookup to a MacBook Pro (or any Mac for that matter) because the Apple Display is specifically configured for Macs where other monitors are probably more configured for PCs/Windows? In other words are Apple Displays the best out of the box for your Mac (minimal configuration, maximum clarity and crispness, etc.).
    Thanks.

It's a very good sRGB monitor. The 30 is outstanding. I still think the 23 is a little sketchy; it seems prone to an issue where for as much as an hour you can just discern a ghost of a window that has been up for a few hours; and there are still sporadic reports of weird color casts and "sparkling" effects that can make it difficult to focus on fine details when you're working. The 20 is very good unless you're in a bright environment, in which case you might find its backlight does not go up enough. The 20 has a certain rarity value right now; it's about the last really good wide-format monitor in its size class, though there are still plenty of good 20 or 21 inch 1600x1200 displays out there.
Bear in mind that because OS X (including, most importantly, Safari) still thinks everything is sRGB, if you get an extended gamut AdobeRGB monitor like the latest 90-series 26 incher from NEC, all the colors in iApps like iPhoto and Safari will come out looking Day-Glo.
The very best monitors out there -- and here we're talking 24-inch monitors that cost $1,200 and up once you consider tax and/or shipping -- will tend to have things like a polarizing filter on the display itself, HDCP support, dual or even triple computer inputs, and 10 or 12 bit color support that enables profiling within the monitor independently of the graphics card on your computer. Of the above features Apple is particularly overdue on implementing HDCP, which Hollywood in its stupidity has made a requirement for HD movies (why they want to enrich monitor manufacturers rather than themselves I don't know), and the polarizing filter thingy, which further improves the blacks and the viewing angle on IPS panels such as the ones Apple uses in its displays.
Every now and then a cheaper one comes along -- DoubleSight's latest 25.5 inch ("26 inch" in name only) display comes to mind -- that fulfills all those attractive specifications but usually has some deficiency or other. The most common aggravating feature of cheaper displays, and this has shown up in forums on the DoubleSight display, is you can't turn the brightness control down far enough for domestic use without resorting to hardware calibration and/or pulling back on the individual RGB sliders, which makes color accuracy a problem. But for a brightly lit office environment, and if you're OK dealing with the (hopefully temporary) OS X issues with wide gamut, the DoubleSight is an attractive HD option.
Now will someone help me decide which of the ACD 20 or 23 causes less eye strain when dealing with text? Thanks in advance.

  • What is the cost for apple to fix display

Macbook display is blacking out as the lid is moved backward. From other research it appears to be a cable shorting out. Wondering what's the ballpark cost for Apple to fix this at a local store. Or would it be cheaper to buy a new macbook.
    Thanks

It really depends on what the actual problem is, and AFAIK Apple doesn't list any prices for store repairs anywhere.

  • I bought my software pack iWork 2008 at the apple retail store and I cannot get any updates and apple App Store won't help me.   Does any one know how I can get the upgrade without paying full price for a second time? I paid $99 for the iWork family pcan'

I cannot believe that apple is refusing to help a customer who bought and paid for iWork software just because I bought it from the retail store the App Store says they cannot allow me to upgrade.  I have never heard of such.  It should to matter where I got it i bought apples software and I don't et how the retail store can be different frothe App Store my god its all still apple.  So stupid.  I will not pay full price for the upgrade.   Also I purchased Logic Studio and 2 days later the upgrade came out and they will not let u upgrade ?  I think there should be at Least a 30-45 day window if u purchase software and they release the upgrade u should get not.    It's not like apple doesn't make enough money already.

iWork '08 & 09 installed from the retail disk or from the downloaded trial must be updated through Software Update. Those installations will not be recognized as installed by the Mac App Store. In Mountain Lion Software Update has been "rolled into" the Mac App Store. Choose Software Update from the Apple menu just like you always have & the Mac App Store will launch. Depending on what you have that needs updating you may see two sections in the MAS window.
But, as always, if you're not running the latest versions of the iWork apps installed from a retail box or the downloaded trial & Software Update says your software is up to date, make sure the applications are where the installer initially put them. The updaters are very picky. If the location is not where the updater is programmed to look or if the folder doesn't have the name the updater looks for, it will not work. The applications cannot be renamed or moved. If you installed from the downloaded trial or the retail box, they must be in the iWork '08 folder in Applications. That iWork folder must be named iWork '08. If it doesn't have the '08 Software Update won't find them & the updaters won't work.
If you are running Pages 3.0.3, then you do have the latest version of Pages from iWork '08. If you want to upgrade to iWork '09, you will need to purchase the new version, just like everyone else. The good news is that you can buy just the individual iWork apps - Keynote, Pages & Numbers - that you need or want for $20 US each from the Mac App Store & then install them on as many Macs as you need using the same Apple ID.

  • Can I use my Apple rebate and get AT&T's special price for new 3GS?

We have AT&T family plan and 2 original 8gag iphones bought right after they came out in June 2007. Our 2 year AT&T contract is up this month. We each got a $100 rebate when the iphone price dropped, and we have not used them. I was told they never expire.
    1. Does anyone know if the AT&T upgrade price and the Apple iphone rebate can be combined?
    2. Does anyone know if my current unused roll-over minutes will be carried over to the new contract?

    You're welcome.
The unlimited data plan for the first generation iPhone is $20/mo and includes a 200 messaging allowance. This was/is a special unlimited data plan rate for the first generation iPhone that AT&T does not offer for any other phone in the smart phone category.
The unlimited data plan for the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS is $30/mo and doesn't include a messaging allowance. Unless you currently have a higher messaging allowance that is shared with each iPhone under the Family plan, to have the same messaging allowance with the iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS will cost you $15 more per month for each iPhone - $10 more per month for the unlimited data plan, and $5 more per month for a 200 messaging allowance.
Your rollover minutes balance will not be affected when purchasing an iPhone 3G to replace your existing first generation iPhone.
If you live near an Apple store, contact the store regarding your $100 rebate for the first generation iPhone - if you can apply the rebate to the AT&T subsidized sales price for the iPhone 3GS.

  • If I take my Iphone 5c to the apple store to be fixed with the service charge of $269, if they can't fix it do they replace the phone? Or will I have to pay retail price for a new phone?

I have a water damaged iphone 5c. I was thinking about taking it to the Apple store and paying the 269 dollar service charge for them to attempt to fix it. My question is: If they can't fix it, will they replace my phone for that $269 dollars, or will I have to pay full retail price for a new phone?

They do not repair at all.
    The replace.
The $269 is for a replacement.
