Price of oracle database
My leader told me that we will buy a series of new oracle products. But while I investigate it, I am really confused of the price.
I found that the oracle enterprise database is more expensive than standard edition (or standard edition one), but I am confused of another enterprise edtion options' price list . Is these options sale with the oracle enterprise database?
list of these options: (from oracle)
Real Application Clusters
Partitions
OLAP
Data Mining
Spatial
Advanced Security
Label Security
Content Database Suite
Database Valut
Warehouse Builder Enterprise ETL
Warehouse Builder Data Quality
If these options are not bundled with oracle enterprise database, what is the difference between standard version and enterprise version?
Hi,
It will be good if you get in touch with one of the Oracle partners to know pricing model. To give you a brief with enterprise addition, their are add on which you can choose if you have business need. They are as follows
Real Application Clusters
Partitioning
OLAP
Data Mining
Spatial
Advanced Security
Label Security
These add ons are at additional cost, Each add on has a cost associated with it. you can follow the link to know the difference between standard and Enterprise edition.

Oracle raises prices on some database add-ons
http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/168578/oracle_hikes_prices_on_database_options.html
Capitalism has rules. When demand is high you can raise prices. When demand is low you can not.
SQL Server is priced low enough to make it attractive given its limited capabilities.
The Oracle Database, and its add-ons, are attractive at a different price point.
And Larry needs a new boat because ...

stuff happens.

and, too, he has to pay for a really really large party:

Sun T2 chips vs SPARC64 VI/VII chips for Oracle database servers
We have recently found poor performance of Sun T5240 servers where (against previous V series servers with similar gross I/O capabilities on the disk volume)the timings for the recovery of the database, and the subsequent re-build of the tables and materialised views, are variable from slightly worse to atrocious. Given that the clock-speed is similar,and all significant oracle database parameters are the same, we couldn't see why these processes should take longer on the T5240. The statistics report from the database showed no I/O bottleneck on the new machine, instead it showed raised CPU times for some of the key slow statements.
We found the attached oracle metalink document (ref 781763.1) <<Sun_T2_slow_for Oracle_DB.html>>
Seems to be that if you can't control the content of large long-running SQL statements to parallelise them, don't buy a T-series box as the multithreading capability will work against you.
Therefore we are looking at new servers to run other similar large Oracle apps and appear to have a number of choices within a similar price range
Notably
M3000 - 1 x SPARC VII CPU (quad core procesor)
M4000 - 2 x SPARC VI CPU (dual core processor)
as opposed to the
T5240 - 2 x T2 CPU (8 core processor)
Question is which of these CPU/Core combinations works best...are there performance figures? What's the difference between CPU's and number of cores?
Any benchmarks to help us decide? Anyone experienced similar or tried these different combos for themselves?We tested a T5210 as a database server (running Ingres, not Oracle) and our batch performance was roughly equivalent to a dual CPU UltraSPARC III V480. Our guess is that the performance hit came from having a relatively small cache shared across so many threads. Like you, we're looking at using the M3000 or M4000 in preference.

Driver problem to connect the oracle database
sir
i want to use oracle 8.0 database at the backend in my project
i want that it is platform indpendent but
so i access that it is achive when i am not use the odbc driver
In xp the oracle not connect with my application
and in win98 some time it is connected to the application by
the odbc driver.
can it is possible that i use oracle database with out use of ODBC bridge in all Microsoft opertaing system types that is win 98,2000,XP
and NT
if yes how please help me and where i found the driver for oracle
with no price.
also how can i made the connection with my application.
thanks in advanceFirst:
post this in the approriate forum. This is for Swing questions, not for database driver questions. You have more luck in the JDBC forum, but still this isn't really a Java/JDBC question.
Second:
try to use the search before posting a question. Questions regarding the ODBC bridge are posted about 5 times a day (in the JDBC forum)!
Third:
to answer your question: download the Type 4 JDBC driver from otn.oracle.com. You can use it with every JDK on every platform. -
Price of oracle db exams went up to $245 without warning
Hi,
I have many oracle certs.
I am very disappointed that we got no warning that oracle database exam prices were going to jump from $195 to $245 on June 1st.
I was thinking about buying several exam vouchers.
Now they are $50 more.
Some of the other database vendors frequently offer 10 to 20% off or 2nd shot gimicks.
I hope Oracle would consider offering some type of discount.
Others please add to this post if you would like discount codes provided.
Thanks
PS: A little over 3 years ago it was only $125, and now it is $245.>The dollar value of the certifications is 0. For some people with a
>dim view of the marketing of certs, less than that.
>I've only seen value in my cert for jobs that require a cert.
One of the messages that I try to get out about certifications is that there are two types of value to them, and only one of the two do you have any control over.
Type I: If you spend your test preparation time trying to learn each of the test topics as thoroughly as possible, then almost any Oracle professional -- even the most experienced -- is liable to learn something new. For people just starting out with Oracle, this strategy will teach them a huge amount about the database. It doesn't really match actual experience working with the database, but it's a huge amount better than having no knowledge at all. It will also give them a running start once they do get a job working with Oracle.
Type II: There are employers who give weight to Oracle certifications. This is not in question -- you even note that some require it. Not all do and not all of those that do give the same amount of weight. I have never met any that consider certification to be a negative, so I don't understand your less-than-zero comment. The only time I would consider it a negative is if someone with a certification were to interview with me and the interview questions led me to believe that they did not know enough to have passed the test and likely used a brain dump.
My certifications have come up in several interviews and I know that they have impacted my interviewers in a positive fashion. Part of that is that I don't overplay them. I would never claim to be an expert because I hold a certification for a given area. Instead I present my certifications (quite truthfully) in the fashion that I use them. Namely I tell prospective employers that I use certifications as a means of continually improving my knowledge of Oracle. Strangely I have never found an interviewer who thinks this reflects poorly on me.
I also continue to get certifications while I work for a company. I try to get a couple each year and always present them on my annual 'self-evaluations' as part of my job-skill improvement process. I'm confident that over the years this has led to at least some upward variance in my merit-pay increases. However, I obviously cannot prove it without access to the 'me' in a parallel universe who does not believe in certifications. -

I can load a javascript to oracle database.. but i can't call it...Please re-read the comments above, especially the part about this not being a javascript nor oracle forum. Exactly what part about this information don't you understand? -
Query in timesten taking more time than query in oracle database
Hi,
Can anyone please explain me why query in timesten taking more time
than query in oracle database.
I am mentioning in detail what are my settings and what have I done
step by step.........
1.This is the table I created in Oracle datababase
(Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.1.0)...
CREATE TABLE student (

2.THIS IS THE ANONYMOUS BLOCK I USE TO
POPULATE THE STUDENT TABLE(TOTAL 2599999 ROWS)...
declare
firstname varchar2(12);
lastname varchar2(12);
catt number(9);
begin
for cntr in 1..2599999 loop
firstname:=(cntr+8)||'f';
lastname:=(cntr+2)||'l';
if cntr like '%9999' then
dbms_output.put_line(cntr);
end if;
insert into student values(cntr,firstname, lastname);
end loop;
end;

Using Oracle ODBC Gateway connecting to a remote Oracle database
Oracle 11gR2
RHEL 6.4
Has anyone use the Oracle ODBC Gateway to connect to another Oracle database? Any issues with that configuration? Where do I get the ODBC drivers for Linux?
(I know, "why not use a dblink?" -- well that would be against company security policies)Hi,
From the Oracle point of view we support using DG4ODBC for Oracle to Oracle connections. However, we have not actually tested it as DG4ODBC is primarily designed for access to non-Oracle databases.
How DG4ODBC will work between Oracle databases depends on the ODBC driver and what that supports. You will need an ODBC Oracle driver which you can get from various suppliers including Oracle but also vendors such as DataDirect, Easysoft etc. You could try a Google search.
You say you do not want to use database links but that is how DG4ODBC is used, You cannot do -
sqlplus user/password@dg4odbc_oracle
Once Dg4ODBC is setup and configured as in this note - if you are using Linux 64-bit -
How to Configure DG4ODBC on 64bit Unix OS (Linux, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX Itanium) to Connect to Non-Oracle Databases Post Install (Doc ID 561033.1)
then in the Oracle database you create a database link and select from tables in the other Oracle database -
select * from table@dg4odbc_db_link ;

Problem with httpd and oracle database
hi
i have oracle linux with oracle database 11gR2
i install php with oci as the following link :
http://oss.oracle.com/projects/php/dist/documentation/installation.html
but when i try phpinfo() i found just only
*" /etc/php.d/oci8.ini"* in the result
and when i test connection i have this error
*" Fatal error: Call to undefined function oci_connect() "*
so what is the best way to install oci on oracle linux ?What version of the OS are you using? Any clues in the syslog and httpd log? Are you using SELinux, which is often an overlooked issue?
Can you provide more details?
so what is the best way to install oci on oracle linux ?According to the instructions, if support is needed: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/php/zend-server-096314.html -

Your import database use a multibyte characterset, your export db a singlebyte cs.
This means, a char can need more than 1 byte.
Try this before import (and before create tables!!):
alter system set nls_length_semantics=char;Greetings

How to take Input from the callers telephone keypad into oracle database
My client requires to automate a registration task for his customers by telephone. The requirement is the Oracle database should take numeric input from the callers telephone keypad eg 1 or 2 or 3 and the oracle must store this input inside its database and do some required processing with such input and generate a unique numeric id (sequence) and send back this unique numeric ID to the caller who is on hold. Please Note. Is there any electronic device to be installed at the client site to solve the above task eg. any telephone line to be connected to the CPU and etc?
I completely have zero knowledge. Please can you outline/summarise the instructions how to construct and install to meet my client requirement.
If this is not possible in Oracle I Can migrate to any database. Please suggest.
please help me. if you cant help i appretiate if you give me some cluesYou need to start with your telephone system. Normally this situation would involve some sort of PBX or other internal switching equipment. Talk to your vendor. There's likely to be software, etc. available to perform the interaction with the end user.
It should have programmable "hooks" to interface with various databases. To Oracle it just looks like another program.

Help needed to loadjava apache poi jars into oracle database. Many classes left unresolved. (Poi 3.7, database 11.1.0.7). Please share your experience!
Hi,
The first 3 steps are just perfect.
But with

This class exists in the SYS schema though and is valid. If SYS should be included as a resolver? How to solve this problem? -
Difference between upgrdae and migration about oracle database
Difference between upgrdae and migration about oracle database
please give the commentsWell, the question is almost philosophic...<br>
In 9i, there is a Migration Guide whereas in 10g there is a Upgrade Guide.<br>
Furthermore, in 9i, there is the command line startup migrate whereas in 10g that's startup upgrade.
Somebody think upgrade when go to new release, and migration when go to new version.<br>
Others think upgrade when new version replace database in place, and migration when new version include a move of database.<br>
Another point of view is : upgrade is for technical, and migration for application/data.<br>
<br>
Well, after these explanations, your upgrade/migratation notion will not be more clear, but I think that is not very important, only a terminology game. The most important is to know what you need : new version or new release.<br>

Error in CLOB datatype for transfering data from Excel to Oracle database
Am using excel sheet as source and Oracle as target Database.
For all tables the operations works smoothly except for tables containing CLOB datatype.
Initially i have used SQL Developer to transfer some data into excell sheets, now i want to transfer those file's data into another Oracle Database.
What other options do i have?
Is excel not the right tool to transfer CLOB datatypes?well,
I couldn't suggest an excel to do it...
You can go from Oracle to Oracle with the PL/SQL IKM. It works fine.
Does it help you? -
Oracle database 11g release 2 installation problem on windows 7 (64-bit)
First of all my windows is not genuine, but on my friend's desktop oracle download and installation worked fine, he chose "create and configure database" options, and it works very well on his desktop, though his windows is also illegitimate. In my case, when I select "Create and configure database" option and pressed 'next",
(Go to my blog to see it with snapshots: Computer Science: Oracle database 11g release 2 installation problem on windows 7 (64-bit))
it asks to select class, I select "Desktop class" and pressed "next". The moment I pressed "next", the whole setup thing disappeared like it was never started. I searched for all possible reasons for why its not getting installed on my laptop, I used registry cleaner s/w, deleted 25 GB of data to create free space if it were the problem, increased the virtual memory to increase the space for RAM, I did almost everything to get this setup working, but I found no success with the "Create and Configure database" option
and
then
I chose a "database software only" option and chose to store in a folder w/o spaces. This way, I got database s/w only and then later I found "Database configuration Assistant (DBCA)" from windows START button and clicked to create and configure database manually. The steps are pretty much interactive and doesn't involve much brainstorming.
The values I filled for
1) Global Database Name : orcl
2) System Identifier : orcl
3) I chose common password for both SYS and SYSTEM
4) while on Enterprise Manager Configuration step, It asked me to create and configure listener in oracle home, so for that too, I typed "netca" in windows START menu and clicked it. There I added a listener.
5) I chose a Storage area which was the Oracle-home itself i.e. where our installation files goes , in my case it is : C:\oracle_base\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1\oradata
6) Then after few more nitty-gritty clicks, we are set to go !
Finally to write SQL code and to create your first TABLE , type "sqlplus" in windows "START" menu and click it when it appears. A command-prompt like window appears , which will ask you for username and password, so here they are :
Username : sys/ as sysdba
Password : (its the one you created in step 3 stated above )
After this you are ready to write your first SQL command.Is this your solution to your original post at Oracle database 11g release 2 installation on windows 7 (64-bit) ?
Pl be aware that you should not create any custom objects in SYS or SYSTEM schema - you should create any such objects in a separate custom schema.
