Primary DC in Azure

We have a small client with very few users and only 1 domain controller. They currently use Office 365 for all services (email, SharePoint, OneDrive, etc.) They would like to get completely rid of their DC, and have zero footprint.
With Windows 8.1, you can use Windows Live Accounts to sign in to Windows, does anyone know if this functionality will ever extend to Office 365/Azure accounts? If so, this would be the solution.
If not, has anyone ever build a DC in Azure, migrated the FSMO roles, then used it as the ONLY DC in the infrastructure. I'm reading that a site to site VPN to the Azure Network would be required, for client authentication, but I want to confirm this solution
before moving forward. Thank you.

Regarding your first question, last year we announced that Windows 10 would be able to leverage Azure Active Directory in this way:
http://blogs.windows.com/business/2014/11/07/windows-10-manageability-choices/
[...] With Windows 10 we’ll also add the ability to leverage Azure Active Directory, devices can be connected to Azure AD, and users can login to Windows with Azure AD accounts or add their Azure ID to gain access to business apps and resources.
At the same time, we’ll ensure that Windows works better when using Active Directory and Azure Active Directory together. When connecting the two, users can automatically be signed-in to cloud-based services like Office 365, Microsoft Intune, and the Windows
Store, even when logging in to their machine using Active Directory accounts. [...]
Regarding building the DC in Azure, I can't say I've done this myself, so others may have better guidance. My first concern would be that the site-to-site VPN (which you do require) would need to be quite hardy if it's the *only* DC. Have you had a chance
to look at these resources?

  • Clustered Primary key in Azure search service

    Hi ,
    Can you please let us know if it is possible to created Clustered Primary Key in Azure Search Service.
    We are unable to set the isKey property for more than one field in the index.
    Also can you providers some pointers on enabling search against multiple indexes. we have a use case where the search has to be performed against 3 different tables and the results set is a combination of all the 3 tables.
    Thanks,

    Since you mentioned setting the key property for more than one field, I think you're looking for compound keys, not clustered, is that correct? We don't support compound keys in Azure Search, to work around this you can concatenate (with a separator) the
    all parts of the key into a single string value and use it in Azure Search.
    Regarding multiple indexes, you can't search across multiple indexes in the same request right now. If you have different source tables and don't mind having them in the same index, you can index the content of the 3 tables into a single index (that has
    the combined/overlapped columns of all) and then search that index.

  • Cannot Change primary email address Azure + Office365

    I'm having an issue with one of my users, their primary email uses @on.microsoftonline.com where the rest of my users use @ourdomain.co.uk. Usually I'd change this on 365 admin center but we have recently started using Azure Active sync so it throws up an
    error requiring me to change it on the premises AD. My problem now is I cant find where to change this, I've read a few different forum posts the most solid one thus far was to use a tool called AD modify but this doesn't seemed to have done the trick.
    Cheers,
    Nathan

    Check the errors in MIISClient or in the dirsync notification emails, maybe the user is not getting updated because of an issue with other attributes. Or the address might already be configured for another object in the cloud. Easiest way to confirm this
    is via running this cmdlet against EO Remote PowerShell:
    Get-Recipient [email protected]
    You can also 'overwrite' the address even for a synchronized user by running this cmdlet:
    Set-Mailbox [email protected] -WindowsEmailAddress [email protected]

  • Database Ownership gets messed up with SQL Server 2014 AlwaysON

    Hi All,
    I am trying to build a nightly refresh process for SQL Server DB from on premise to Azure Cloud (IAAS). The Azure infrastructure is configured as 2 node always on. Every Day a new DB get created with retention period of 7 days. (Another script which deletes
    old DB)
    Nightly Build Process as Below:
    1) DB Backup get copied to Azure Blob Storage
    2) Restore DB on primary Server on Azure
    3) Change DB owner to appropriate login on primary Server
    4) Backup DB/Log from primary Server and restore it on Secondary Server.
    5) Add DB to alwayson temp Group.
    6) Failover temp Group and change DB owner to appropriate login. (Application Dependency to have login ID as the owner of the DB).
    7) Failback and remove DB from temp group and add it to appropriate group.
    During this process somehow the DB ownership gets messed up randomly either on primary or Secondary.
    I can handle the primary server ownership mess-up by adding piece of code to set the ownership in the end, but for secondary I can't change the ownership as the DB is in readonly mode, resulting, when failover happens the application fails to open default DB.
    Any lead on the solution would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Viral Shah
    Thanks - Viral

    Are you using contained databases? If not, is the login on your primary server on Azure the same as the login from your on-premise SQL Server instance as per this
    KB article? Keep in mind that SQL Server looks at SID values and not login/password combination. If the login exists on both servers and the database backup is restored, it carries with it
    the login SID assigned as the DB owner

    Answer an interesting question?
    Create a wiki article about it!

  • Azure SQL Data Sync, LINQ optimization bug

    How can I report the following Bug ?
    var empty = new Set<int>();
    var query = storage.table.Where(item => empty.Contains(item.id));
    // Entity Framework Extended
    query.DeleteAsync()
    The query is optimized to something like this, because the set is empty, and therefore the result set is always empty:
    SELECT
    CAST(NULL AS uniqueidentifier) AS [C1],
    CAST(NULL AS uniqueidentifier) AS [C2],
    CAST(NULL AS int) AS [C3],
    CAST(NULL AS int) AS [C4],
    CAST(NULL AS datetime2) AS [C5],
    CAST(NULL AS varchar(1)) AS [C6],
    CAST(NULL AS int) AS [C7]
    FROM ( SELECT 1 AS X ) AS [SingleRowTable1]
    WHERE 1 = 0
    Now the problem is that update and delete trigger, introduced by Azure SQL Data Sync, will fail because they require the primary key, which is not part of the optimized query. Meaning that when the set is empty the triggers will fail, but if the set contains
    an id, the query is not optimized and therefore will succeed.
    (SELECT [i].[PrimaryKeyId] FROM DELETED AS [i])
    Notice, the problem here is not Entity Framework Extended from my perspective, but the Azure SQL Data Sync Triggers!

    not sure if i understood your post correctly, but the columns available in the logical inserted and deleted tables available in the trigger are the actual columns of the table itself, not the columns in the query that caused the trigger to fire.

  • Connecting to Azure SQL database in Access 2010

    The following guidelines apply to SQL Database connections using ODBC:
    • When using SQL Server Native Client from SQL Server 2008 R2 or SQL Server 2008, the connection string must include the server name as part of the user name (user@server).
    • You must use TCP/IP as the protocol when connecting to an Azure SQL Database.
    • You cannot create a table in the master database, so therefore you must create a user database to create a table.
    • You cannot execute a use database command to switch to your user database. You must disconnect and connect directly to the user database.
    • You must have a primary key or clustered index on your table to be able to insert data.

  • Azure AD user name not using configured custom domain name

    I have configured a few users for Lync Online that I setup before I had custom domain name work with Azure AD.  Now I have the custom domain setup and verified and configured as the primary domain.  The users that were configured for Lync
    Online are still displayed with the *.onmicrosoft.com username in Azure AD.
    Is there a way I can change these users so their usernames use our custom domain?

    You can easily change the UPN via PowerShell:
    Set-MsolUserPrincipalName -UserPrincipalName [email protected] -NewUserPrincipalName [email protected]
    If you want to do this in bulk for all users, you can use something like this:
    $all = Get-MsolUser -All
    $users = $all | ? {$_.UserPrincipalName -match "tenant.onmicrosoft.com"}
    $users | % {Set-MsolUserPrincipalName -UserPrincipalName $_.UserPrincipalName -NewUserPrincipalName $_.UserPrincipalName.Replace("tenant.onmicrosoft.com","domain.com")}
    Test it first against a single user of course :)

  • Primary key column auto increment

    Hello,
    In my Azure SQL Database I noticed that weird thing is happening. I have table with primary key column with auto increment, and all works fine, on new insert that value automatically increment, but every now and then, that value, for no reason, increments
    for 1000.
    For instance i have in DB values in this order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 1001, 1002, 1003, 2004,  2005, 3001, 3002...
    Why is this happening?

    Hello ,
    you can see this thread :
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/17012339/windows-azure-sql-database-identity-auto-increment-column-skips-values
    It's seems that SQL Server work with sequence and block 1000 values. In the cloud, your SQL Azure Database can be move from one server to an other or restarted and so a new sequence is used. That's why you jump from 4 to 1001.

  • DB Adapter - PostgreSQL - Primary key - auto increment handling

    Hi,
    I have to connect to a PostgreSQL DB. I have a table in which has a primary key called seq_id. This seq_id is being incremented using a sequence.
    I have to configure the DB adapter for this table. The problem is that while creating the adapter it does not allow me to deselect the primary key (seq_id). Because of this I have to supply a value for the seq_id while inseting the data using the adapter. But this defeats the purpose of sequence (auto increment).
    Is there a way to get around this and to avoid specifying the value for seq_id while using the DB Adapter and let it get inserted using the sequence of the DB?
    Thanks,
    Sanjay

  • Unqueriable SQL Azure DB Server

    I have a SQL Azure DB server that is in a "bad" state.  The error I get in the console is:
    Some features are not currently available for the server '<server name>' in subscription '' since the server information could not be retrieved
    at the moment. Please wait a few minutes and then try this operation again.
    The databases for server
    <server name> located in region <region>
    for subscription could not be retrieved.
    Please wait a few minutes and then try this operation again. For more information about Microsoft Azure service availability, visit the Microsoft
    Azure Service Dashboard.
    The two primary issues are:
    1. If I attempt to delete it in console, it fails
    2. If I attempt to delete it from the PowerShell console, it hangs my console
    I simply want to delete it...any suggestions?

    Hi,
    which region your SQL data base is located. Hope it is not in the below mentioned region.
    North Europe, North Central US, West Europe, Central US and Australia East. We are experiencing the downtime in these regions.
    Request you to try after some time by following these steps in the link

  • Managing VMs in Azure and AWS : What's the best practice?

    Hi guys,
      I'm doing some research to understand what my options are when it comes to managing some machines in both Azure and AWS.  I'd ideally like to treat each web service as a separate physical office site, demarking boundaries and putting a Distribution
    Point (or maybe a secondary, based on the bandwidth costs) up in each to handle content distribution.  The VMs within these services are routable, as in I can ping them and they can ping back to the core datacenter where I plan to put the primary.
      Have you guys done something like this before?  How did it work out?  How would you recommend I approach managing less than 50 Azure + AWS VMs?  I'm trying to keep this infrastructure as simple as is possible, and currently only
    has one Primary site.
      Thanks!

    Managing Azure VMs from an on-prem ConfigMgr instance is supported and should work no problem assuming you have a VPN connection set up (which it sounds like you do):
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2889321
    There really is nothing special here. It's just network traffic and the VPN makes the actual physical location of the target managed system irrelevant. As long as the client can communicate with the MP, DP, and WSUS instance on the normal ports (80, 8530,
    and 10123 by default) then it'll work.
    Same goes with Amazon. Although of course it isn't specifically supported by Microsoft, neither is your internal networking infrastructure.

  • Using Entity Framework with SQL Azure - Reliability

    (This is a cross post from http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5860510/using-entity-framework-with-sql-azure-reliability since I have yet to receive any replies there)
    I'm writing an application for Windows Azure. I'm using Entity Framework to access SQL Azure. Due to throttling and other mechanisms in SQL Azure, I need to make sure that my code performs retries if an SQL statement has failed. I'm trying to come up with
    a solid method to do this.
    (In the code below, ObjectSet returns my EFContext.CreateObjectSet())
    Let's say I have a function like this:
      public Product GetProductFromDB(int productID)
         return ObjectSet.Where(item => item.Id = productID).SingleOrDefault();
    Now, this function performs no retries and will fail sooner or later in SQL Azure. A naive workaround would be to do something like this:
      public Product GetProductFromDB(int productID)
         for (int i = 0; i < 3; i++)
            try
               return ObjectSet.Where(item => item.Id = productID).SingleOrDefault();
            catch
    Of course, this has several drawbacks. I will retry regardless of SQL failure (retry is waste of time if it's a primary key violation for instance), I will retry immediately without any pause and so on.
    My next step was to start using the Transient Fault Handling library from Microsoft. It contains RetryPolicy which allows me to separate the retry logic from the actual querying code:
      public Product GetProductFromDB(int productID)
         var retryPolicy = new RetryPolicy<SqlAzureTransientErrorDetectionStrategy>(5);
         var result = _retryPolicy.ExecuteAction(() =>
               return ObjectSet.Where(item => item.Id = productID).SingleOrDefault;
         return result;
    The latest solution above is described as ahttp://blogs.msdn.com/b/appfabriccat/archive/2010/10/28/best-practices-for-handling-transient-conditions-in-sql-azure-client-applications.aspx Best Practices for Handling Transient Conditions in SQL Azure Client
    Application (Advanced Usage Patterns section).
    While this is a step forward, I still have to remember to use the RetryPolicy class whenever I want to access the database via Entity Framework. In a team of several persons, this is a thing which is easy to miss. Also, the code above is a bit messy in my
    opinion.
    What I would like is a way to enforce that retries are always used, all the time. The Transient Fault Handling library contains a class called ReliableSQLConnection but I can't find a way to use this with Entity Framework.
    Any good suggestions to this issue?

  • I'm unable to create a new Table on SQL Azure.

    I'm trying to create a new table in my custom database. But i'm getting this error message:
    'Filegroup reference and partitioning scheme' is not supported in this version of SQL Server.'
    Here is the sample create schema:
    CREATE TABLE dbo.[Contact](
    [ID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
    [FirstName] [nvarchar](250) NULL,
    [LastName] [nvarchar](250) NULL,
    [InsertDateTime] [datetime] NULL,
    [UpdateDateTime] [datetime] NULL,
    [PhoneNo1] [nvarchar](50) NULL,
    [CellNo1] [nvarchar](50) NULL,
    [IsActive] [bit] NOT NULL,
    CONSTRAINT [PK_Contact] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED
    [ID] ASC
    )WITH (STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF) ON [PRIMARY]
    ) ON [PRIMARY]

    In addition to Neil's comment, I would add that one of the major strengths of SQL Azure is its simplicity from an administrative standpoint while providing as much parity as possible for the relational and programming stack.  In somes
    cases, less is more. SQL Azure is an example.  By having a simpler system we are able to get certain capabilities not available on premise. Take a look at the CREATE DATABASE XYZ AS COPY OF operation for example, you do not have to worry about finding
    a server with enough space; you do not have to worry about moving files around a network or creating shares between machines; and best of all, you do not have to any kind or provisioning of cleanup as a result of cloning a database. The upcoming Data Federation
    feature is another example of what you can achieve when you are free of underlying configuration details.
    That's not to say SQL Azure wouldn't benefit from some capabilties of the SQL Server platform (for example TDE); but personally I am happy that two years later we still don't have to worry about many of those low-level configuration details.

  • Which Azure services would I need for a readily developed application?

    Hello...
    Sorry if there's already an somewhere on here for this... I found similar questions but all seem to be related to "building" apps on Azure. In my case, we have an already built application. So here's the deal:
    We are considering hosting our application on the cloud, so I would like some clarifications/suggestions on what the suitable option is for us on Azure. I'm not very versed on computing/network infrastructure;
    I'm just doing a preliminary research to see what is out there for us.
    Here's an overview of our application and needs:
    Our software, among other uses, is mainly a tools & asset management system used for tracking tool history, i.e. maintenance and field use. Our clients are service provider companies of a
    niche in O&G exploration. The application is...
    Developed on Windows OS for Windows users.
    Built using LabVIEW, and requires a run-time engine installed on the client machine.
    Powered by Microsoft SQL Database (2005)
    Our Primary Needs:
    Various users in a client company should be able to use the software and access data simultaneously.
    Client companies should be able to access only their own data.
    User-size is an upward of 6 per company (and 10 companies in the first year). Most clients are in North America, but a couple are overseas.
    We (our company) should be able to update the software and database structure at will.
    Development and compilation will done on a local machine.
    So will the Virtual Machine suffice, or do we need other service(s) like the SQL Database?
    Sorry for the lengthy message, but I hope it helps someone offer a proper option for us.  I can't find a Microsoft email anywhere, and I rather type this stuff out.
    Thanks.

    Hi Immanuel,
    Thanks for reaching out.
    here is my understanding of your solution and later in the email i have put couple of possibilities to use cloud
    Understanding:
    At present desktop App (written in dotnet), is available to local user, App connects to some SQL database (app connects to one / more than one db, not local to user), users have some kind of authentication mechanism that authenticates
    and authorize them to use only their data from the database (not sure if its one single db with multi-tenancy or separated db for each user).
    To be: This is my understanding where you want to be
    1. you want app to be deployed in cloud
    Question: what is the primary reason of app to be deployed on cloud if this is a windows application, if this is security, then we can explore alternatives to deploy on cloud.
    2. You want app to connect to the SQL db deployed on SQL Azure (guessing it would be multi-tenancy), in that case you would need SQL Azure, depending on your db size and scalability
    needs on db you can choose from different SQL Azure dbs (at end it comes down to cost)
    Options:
    1. Not sure if you really need the desktop app on cloud, assuming you have to have it on cloud, you would need at very basic A VM role, where you would deploy and setup the app
    as a base VM, that you may replicate for different clients / users of yours. keep in mind that with VM role you are paying for uptime, even if your user is not using your app.
    if you choose to use a vm from the azure provided vms then you are covered for licensing, else you would need to figure out licensing cost for OS that you put on the VM, and also
    the number of VM will influence the cost of your OS licensing.
    2. Alternatively you can also explore a hybrid option where you can keep desktop app on local desktop of users but it connects to the sql azure db (this can further be put in hybrid
    mode depending on your data, frequency of update to data etc.. for now it can be a pure sql azure db)
    in this case you would not have to maintain much in terms of Cloud service maintenance, all you will have to keep up with is SQL Azure, backups of SQL as you would have been doing
    for regular db
    3. option 3 is to convert windows app to a web app and then put the entire solution on cloud.. that is kinda larger effort and may not be most appropriate
    at this point for you.
