Prime Infrastructure Controller Configuration Backup

Hi,
Does anyone know if its possible to send controller configuration backups to a specific folder on a FTP server?
Currently PI backs up all the controller configs to the root directory of my FTP server. It would be really good if I can specify a folder to store the configs within Prime. Perhaps I should be backing up the configs a different way?
Thanks,

I having problem with my Controller Backup.
When a try witch CLI to make my Backup i get this.
mgmt-cncs/admin# backup test repository wcs-ftp-repo
% Creating backup with timestamped filename: test-130619-1202.tar.gpg
INFO : Cannot configure the backup directory size settings as the free space available is less than the current database size.
You do not have enough disk space available in your repository to complete this backup.
DB size is 48 GB
Available size is 30 GB
Please refer to the command reference guide for NCS and look at the /backup-staging-url/ command reference to setup the backup repository on an externally mounted location

Is Backup first trying to make a local file and then send it to the repository?
Because i have only 30 GB local disk.

  • Prime Infrastructure Device Configuration

I recently installed Prime Infrastructure to replace LMS and NCS, but I've encountered an issue with changing device settings.   I had a controller set up to pull configs with no issue, but I had to change the IP to move it to a different VLAN ("it" meaning the controller).   After I changed the IP, the device showed that it was unavailable in the device/operation dashboard in Prime INF, as expected.
Now, I can't find a way to change the IP address of the controller in any way, shape or form.   It allows me to change everything else, but not the IP address.   The only option I have is to delete the object and add a new one, which will remove access to the saved configurations.
I'm not sure if this is a bug or that it's defective by design, but if you can't change the management interface IP for a device without adding a new one, you've got a bit of a problem.

    That directory doesn't exist
    ade # ls -al /var/adm/CSCOpx/files/rme/dcma/shadow
ls: /var/adm/CSCOpx/files/rme/dcma/shadow: No such file or directory
    ade #
    ade # ls -al /var/adm/
ls: /var/adm/: No such file or directory
I guess the configs are not in individual files but within the database

  • Cisco Prime Infrastructure automatic configuration Archieve

    Hi all,
I installed Cisco Prime Infrastructure and I note that it make configuration archieving for all devices on it with different date.
I need to know based on what it selects the date on which it take the archieving of configuration (note that it takes archieving of all boxes on different dates) ??
    thanks,
    Best Regards.

    Hi Mohamed,
The configuration archive will run every day, however if there is no change between today's configuration and the previous check, there is no point in archiving it again.

  • Cisco Prime Infrastructure Scheduled Configuration Archive not executing

We have a deployment of Cisco Prime Infrastrcuture 1.3 (1.3.0.20).
Configuration Archive is a feature that collects and archives the device configurations i.e. cisco switches.
You have an option to schedule this to run, say daily, weekly etc. Once scheduled you can see it in the "Jobs Dashboard" and with the "next start time" of what you configured. I have a situation whereby  the time it is suppose to start - it doesnt - howevere flags the job as a "success". Not newe device configurations are archived and the "next start time" remain the same. Its almost like it is failing to execute, but some other process under the hood thinks that it was been executed correctly?
Any ideas or experience that could help here would be appreciated!

Some extra info that has just come to my attention.  At one point we were running (we're actually still running) CiscoWorks with LMS3.2 and Cisco NCS 1.x.  I merged these two things together into Cisco Prime Infrastructure (upgraded the licensing to get 450 lifecycle licenses to cover the APs + all of the devices coming from LMS3.2).  I followed all of the documented procedures to upgrade the NCS appliance to Prime Infrastructure.  But when I type "show application" from the CLI of the NCS appliance (now the Prime Infrastructure appliance) I see this:
    HQ-NCS1/admin# show application
NCS             Cisco Prime Network Control System
Is that normal?  Maybe this is my problem.  Should this output list "Cisco Prime Infrastructure" instead of (or in addtion to) Cisco Prime Network Control System?  When I login to the GUI it shows "Cisco Prime Infrastructure" and the GUI has changed considerably (menus are different) so I'm assuming that the application upgrades I launched from the CLI to go to Prime Infrastructure worked fine.

I have never used a full path, but I have specified what folder the login account will use. Maybe that's what you should do.
    NCS-User folder:
    ftp://server/IT/Wi-Fi/Backup
This way you don't have to out a full path in the URL for the repository.

  • Cisco prime configuration backup

    Hi There,
In Cisco prime infrastructure there are two places that I can do backup of the WLCs.
    1. Operate -> Configuration Archive & run schedule archive
    2. Administration -> background Task -> Controller Configuration Backup
Can someone tell me what's the different between these two? What would be the issue if I have enable only option 1 not 2? If I want to get the running configuration of the controller to my PC How I would be able to do that?
    Thx
    Sara

An Intelligent Network Management Application doesn't have to depend on most basic tasks for user input.
It should be smart enough to start managing devices for configurations, inventory and Fault Management out of the box, as soon as the devices are added.
Under Mega-Menu like --> Design, Deploy and Operate their are many tasks which are user deployed and as per the network preferences and requirement.
Under Background Tasks we have System Defined Tasks to start many such device management activities by default.
Also, under Background task, you can configure an external TFTP/FTP server to archive the backup of the controllers configuration.

  • Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.3 - TFTP backup WLC not working

I don;t get the the background task "Controller Configuration Backup" working. I want to use default TFTP.
When i look in the logging i see 2 of three WLC's succesfully backuped there logging. Is their a log file where you can see what is happening?
    With kind regards,
    Martijn.

    Hi Martijn:
If you go to the controller's GUI to Commands > Upload File and manually trigger the TFTP Configuration backup, does the process complete as expected?  If not, whatever's causing that problem needs to be addressed first.
When someone wants to do a config backup from the command line, they give a series of commands
    transfer download datatype config
    transfer download mode tftp
    transfer download serverip x.x.x.x
    transfer download path ./
    transfer download filename myBackup.cfg
    transfer download start
The Controller Config Backup background task is just the SNMP version of "transfer download filename " and "transfer download start".  If these other required settings aren't already there, the task isn't going to set them (the humans have to).  If there's a problem with writing out the file on the server, or packet routing issues to get to the server, the task isn't going to see those things, it just knows that the answer to "transfer download start" wasn't "Okay!"
As for watching this processing in logs, go to Administration > Logging, and set the logging level to Trace for the modules SNMP and System, and click Save.  Then kick off your backup attempt, allowing it to fail.  When it does, return to Administration > Logging, and click the Download button to retrieve the logs.zip file.  The activity should be in the ncs-x-x.log file.
If you don't have the new Update-1 patch for Prime Infrastructure 1.3.0.20 (filename PI_1.3.0.20_Update_1-12.tar.gz) installed, I'd suggest you get it.  While it's not going to specifically address this issue, there are a lot of really good fixes in it.

  • Prime Infrastructure - Automating the change "mac@ - AP name" with CSV file

    Hi,
We are going to deploy a lot of new LAP. For each site our  customer will give us an excel file with the MAC @ of the AP and the  target name.
I was wondering if it was possible to automate the  injection of this file "mac <-> ap name" and then apply the  predefined template with P.I ?
If yes, could you explain how, as I am new to Prime Infrastructure.,The goal is to avoid to rename each AP individually on prime as there is a lot of AP to deploy.
    Many thanks in advance !
    Oliv.

    Hi Oliv:
In the Classic View of Prime Infrastructure, under Configure > Access Points, there's a menu option for Import AP Config.  This uses a .csv file to match APs by the MAC address and make changes in bulk.  From the online help:
    Sample File Header:
    AP Name,Ethernet MAC,Location,Primary Controller,Secondary Controller,Tertiary Controller
    ap-1, 00:1c:58:74:8c:22, sjc-14-a, controller-4404-1, controller-4404-2, controller-4404-3
The CSV file can contain following fields. AP Ethernet MAC Address is mandatory, Optional fields are           AP Name, Location, Primary Controller, Secondary Controller and Tertiary Controller.
Optional fields can be empty. AP Config Import will  ignore empty optional field values. However, if Primary Controller and  Secondary Controller entries are empty then Unified AP update is not  done
Ethernet MAC: AP Ethernet MAC Address
    AP Name:AP Name
    Location:AP Location
    Primary Controller:Primary Controller Name
    Secondary Controller:Secondary Controller Name
    Tertiary Controller:Tertiary Controller Name

  • Cisco NCS configuration backup and restore of WLC issues found

    Hi,
I recently tested the process for a customer of defaulting a Cisco WLC to factory configuration and then restoring the configuration from Cisco NCS.  It was not seamless to say the least and I wonder if I have just gone about it the wrong way.
Have have set the NCS platform to configuration sync with the 5508 controllers at 04:00 every day and prior to the controller defaulting I ensured that NCS also reported that the config was in sync.
I have also set NCS to complete a tftp backup of the controller every night 23:00 - interestingly though I have no idea where this is stored on the NCS platform ( a VM appliance ) or what it's filename is.
Anyway my experiences where as follows:-
    1.  defaulted WLC and via serial CLI ended up at the configuration wizard.
    2.  Set the correct LAG, management IP, hostname that NCS knew this controller by.
    3.  To test things just created a dummy WLAN ( SSID ) as I assumed this would be overwritten ( big mistake ! ).
At this point I connected the controller to the network and tried to restore the configuration from the config sync version.
First problem - you have to remember to set up the SNMP community string you were using as it is needed by the configuration sync process.  After adding this to the controller I could push the configuration to the controller.
Second problem - failed to add the first WLAN from the backup as I have added the temporary dummy WLAN via the wizard and NCS reported a conflict.  So had to delete WLAN ID 1 from the WLC GUI directly and then the config push no longer reported this error.
Third problem - for some reason did not add the TACACS server details - reported the error that it could not added them.  I manually added these via a template via NCS and all was well.
Fourth problem - all but the first WLAN was in the disabled state - had to re-enable all of the WLANs
Fifth problem - any default items I had disabled or removed have not been saved - therefore I have removed the public and private SNMP communities - but these were still on the WLC after the restore.  I have disabled unused ports not in the LAG as they show an error in NCS - these where not disabled after the restore.
So all in all not a very satisfactory restore process from NCS to an defaulted WLC ( ment to simulate to the customer what would be needed if they had to replace a controller due to hardware failure ).
So - anybody like to comment on what I did wrong - is there a different / better way of achieving this ??
    Regards
    Robert

    Hello Robert,
all the tasks you did seem to be fine for me.
I was also wondering the process os restoring from NCS controller configuration backups ...
If anyone else could give another method with less drawbacks, that would be appreciated, but i doubt about it.
    regards,
    Guillaume.

  • Prime Infrastructure 2.1.1 cannot add more than two interfaces in Dynamic Interface Controller Templates

Cisco Prime Infrastructure is a damned nightmare of browser bugs (some features work in IE8, some in IE9, and some only in Firefox).  And I am not sure if what I am experiencing is a browser bug - or a real bug - or something that I was able to do before and can't any more?  I would love for someone to either explain why this is happening to me, or reproduce the bug!
    I'm running Prime 2.1.1.  I am doing this ...
    Configure > Controller Template Launchpad
    System > Dynamic Interface
Select a command > Add interface (GO)
Enter all the properties - roll to the bottom of the page, and click Apply to Controllers
I have four controllers.  And normally I would add an interface for each controller.  But I can only create two out of the four.  It doesn't matter which two I choose.  When I click Add under Manage Interfaces for the third controller, I cannot click the Done button to apply it (see screenshot, attached).  I have found that if I change the VLAN to something else, it will let me save it.  But ... why?  I went back and reviewed all of my existing interface templates and I am not doing anything different.  Although, they were all created a long while ago using WCS 7.x.
Any help, guidance, or confirmation of insanity would be appreciated.
    -Steve Ballantyne

I doubt I will get any hits on this here but I always try.  I opened a TAC case.  I will come back and comment on whatever they find.

  • Cisco Prime Infra 2.2 + Third Party Inventory and configuration backup

    Hi All,
I am having a doubt related to Cisco prime solution capability to do a discovery and config backup for non-cisco devices.
Requirement is to use Cisco prime to do a discovery, inventory and take configuration backup for non-cisco devices. Is it something possible out of the box ?
If not possible out of the box, is there any method to do that using any custom API ?
Can we monitor 3rd party( Non-cisco) devices using Cisco Prime 2.2 ?

  • Prime Infrastructure 1.3 ERROR at Backup restore

    Hi everyone,
we are currently in migration phase of WCS to Prime 1.3 and at this moment we are encounter the following error:
We are migrating the databases at appliance 1, then backup the databases and restore it at appliance 2.
This process is needed for the central migration of 3 4 databases.
Today we wanted to restore a migrated database on the new appliance and got this error message:
ERROR : There is the mismatch in the following configuration parameter(s) of this machine when compared to the machine where the backup was generated: SWAP Memory
ERROR : This may affect the performance of the current machine. Hence aborting restore process.
    % Application restore failed
Both appliances have the same version when the database was backed up, appliance 2 has already the final licenses while appliance 1 run without licenses at the moment (for the migration process).
Can anyone help me regarding this error message? I couldn't find anything in the net.
    Best Regards

Today we could figure out that the update 1 for Prime Infrastructure was blocking the restore process.
You can't remove the patch. When you try the command "patch remove NCS..." you get an error that this command does not apply on this patch version...
We installed a fresh version 1.3.0.20 without patch and could restore the database without problems.
So be careful with this update...
