Prime LMS 4.1 and VMWARE ESX 5.0

Can Cisco Prime LMS 4.1 be deployed on VMware ESX server 5.0 or not ?

No LMS 4.1 is not supported on ESXi 5.0. LMS 4.1 supports the following Virtualization Systems:
•VMware ESX server 3.0.x
•VMware ESX Server 3.5.x
•VMWare ESX Server 4.0.x
•VMWare ESX Server 4.1
•VMWare ESXi Server 4.0
•VMware ESXi Server 4.1
•Hyper V Virtualization (As an installable in Windows 2008)
For more details check:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/ciscoworks_lan_management_solution/4.1/install/guide/prereq.html#wp1119955
On a side note, though a OVF/OVA file may be an issue, but you can try to install LMS 4.1 on a virtualized Win/Sol guest OS host, where it should work mostly. But for any issues further, Cisco or TAC may refer to this as an unsupported installation, for any t/s or support.
Else, you may upgrade to LMS 4.2 which is supported on ESXi 5.0.

NCS 1.1 OVA image is Linux based so i cant install Vmware Tools.during the console wasnt working how i install Vmware Tools  and run the server and also NCS 1.1 ??
    Regards.

Once installed and started successfully (e.g. admin has issued "ncs start" from the console and all services are running, can be verified by issuning "ncs status" also from console command line), the NCS server should be listening on port 443 and thus requires you to access it via https.
    See step 2 here.

  • SAP and VMWare ESX

Hello, I read an articule of VMWare that said that VMWare ESX support SAP. But in the other hand I had read some posts that said that it is not recommended to use VMWare with SAP because they(SAP)won't give us support.
Here, we want to use VMWare ESX with SAP Portal Server and SAP MM. But only for Test and Development.
For Producction they'll have their own server.
Does anyone knows if I could implement this.
and If Any of you implement a similar solution?
    Thanks

  • SRW2024 and VMware ESX

We recently purchased some SRW2024's to upgrade our ESX backend services (currently using one unmanaged switch).  The key design feature was to be able to capitalize on 802.1q tagging and VLAN physical and virtual machines so they could work together.
Each ESX server has two NIC's attached to two SRW2024's.  The SRW2024's have one shared connection that is trunked between the switchs.  Although this is not required since the ESX box is bridging the connection this allows a redundant path in case an individual NIC fails.  All of the ESX connections are trunked and have all VLAN's assoicated with them.
    THE PROBLEM:
Last night we simulated a power failure of one of the switches expecting VMware to failover to the second connection and all services to continue to operate.  However, rebooting switch A somehow cause a momentary loss of connection in switch B and therefore all ESX servers thought they were isolated from the network and shutdown all VM's.
    THE QUESTION(s):
    Has anyone experienced anything simular
If anyone is using ESX with SRW2024 are they trunked?  How do phyical devices access the ESX servers, Access mode or General?
Is there a $500 or less switch that allows you to do * VLAN trunking such in ISO (I'm not and network expert so forgive the lack of techincal terminology here and please educate me if you understand what I'm talking about)
If ESX tagged via 802.1q and the switches were set as default, without VLANs set would the tags get striped?  Would they be passed?  Is there a way to configure the SRW2024 to act as an unmanaged switch?
Thanks for any help in advance.  Also thanks to GV for all of their wonderful comments and informaiton and hopefull will shed some thoughts on this issue.

  • Issue wrt LMS 4.0 on VMware ESX4.1

    Hi;
I am facing issue during installation of Cisco Works LMS 4.0 on Windows 2008 Server R2 Enterprise 64 bit VMware ESX 4.1 instance. The installation is termicating and give me following error:
"You cannot install CiscoWorks LAN Management Solution 4.0 on an unsupported operating system or when Terminal Services is running on the supported Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition, Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition, Windows 2003 R2 Server platforms, and Windows 2008 Server Enterprise Edition.
The setup program will exit when you click OK
You must either upgrade the operating system on the server to a supported version or install CiscoWorks LAN Management Solution 4.0 on another server that runs a supported operating system."
As per Cisco document LMS 4.0 support VMware ESX 4.1, Windows 2008 Server R2 Enterprise 64 bit.
Please help me in this regards; Also found the screen shot in attachment.
    Thanks
    Shoaib

this is not quite correct, LMS 4.0 does not support Windows 2008 R2 per default:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/prod/collateral/netmgtsw/ps6504/ps6528/ps11200/ps11202/data_sheet_c78-610760.html
it is windows 2008 with service pack 1 and 2 which are supported - not R2
But, nevertheless, it is supported with a patch available on CCO. See this doc:

  • Drawing network topology in Cisco Prime LMS 4.2

    Hi all:
I installed the Cisco Prime LMS 4.2 and managed to discover the Cisco devices and user devices like my PC stations.
Then I tried to draw the network topology from this LMS 4.2 and I found the topology under the Configuration and Monitor tab. By clicking to these two tabs, it appears a page of something like below:
    Topology Services
You can use Topology Services to:
    - View detailed xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    - Display the physical and logical services in your network
    - xxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    - xxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    - xxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    - xxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    - xxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
There is no action click on this page and it looks like an explanation page and cannot do anything.
May I know how to draw the networl topology by this Cisco Prime LMS 4.2?
Hope to hear the answer from anyone know about this soon. Many thanks!
    Warmest regards,
    tangsuan

    Hi Mantej:
Thanks to your link and I have downloaded the Prime LMS 4.2 document.
I then read and installed the JRE first in 64 bits because my Windows OS is 64bits but it still prompts out the Java installation screen. I then installed the JRE in 32 bits.
After that, it has no more Java installation screen. It then request for downloading file at the Windows top bar. I follow the request to riight click to allow the downloading. The Java running and downlaod the file.
After that, I cannot see any difference. Meaning I still cannot access anything for Toplology Services to draw my network topology diagram.
May I know what should be happen and what is the next step to do the topology drawing?
    Many thanks!

  • Cisco Prime LMS 4.1 - Do access points use up a node count license?

    Hi Everyone,
I wish to purchase Cisco Prime LMS 4.1, particularly Cisco part # R-LMS-4.1-500-K9 which support 500 Cisco nodes.
We have about 360 Cisco switches/routers/ASA/FWs/WLCs so the 500 nodes license would seem to suffice for now & for future growth.
We also have about 200 lightweight APs that are managed & monitored by our WLC/WCS/Navigator environment.
According to the device support documentation for LMS, it supports and I assume will auto-discover these APs.
Does that mean these APs will use up node licenses on LMS even though management of the APs is done by WLC/WCS?  If so is there an easy way to suppress discovery of APs by LMS so we don’t have to purchase extra node licenses for LMS?  Or, does LMS offer additional support features for wireless APs not already offered by WLC/WCS/Navigator?
Just trying to understand how many network node licenses for LMS I have to purchase.
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Ian.

Thanks but I just heard back from my Cisco SE and he assures me that an AP will NOT use up a license.
I've asked him to verify his answer for me.
Is your answer based on real world expereince (the best there is)?  That is, are you running Prime LMS 4.1 and does it indeed use up a license for each light-weight AP it discovers & manages?
Thanks for mentioning options 1-3 but I do not wish to employ any of them.  I don't mind buying the additional licenses for APs ... I just need to know if I have to or not.
    Ian.

  • Cisco Prime LMS 4.1 - Support for Cisco Catalyst 3560-C Series Switches

    Hello together
I have a customer which uses the following switch. Last year I have installed LMS 4.1 for him to manage the switches. Unfortunatly the switch model is not supported. According to the information found on the following site the switch is supported for most of the modules in LMS:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/ciscoworks_lan_management_solution/4.1/device_support/table/lms41sdt.html
The oid object of the device is the following: 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.1465
Supported Software: 12.2(55)EX (Customer has 12.2(55)EX3
    Version Support Type: Device Update
So I updated all device updates I was able to find.
Step 1: For that I went to Admin > System > Software Center > Schedule Device Downloads and created a job where I have downloaded the latest versions of all packages.
Step 2: Installed the downloaded packages Admin > System > Software Center > Device Update and installed all the packages.
Unfortunatly I don't see the same result like described in the Supported Device Table for LMS 4.1.
    - Cisco View -> works
    - Inventory and Config Collection -> works
    - Fault Monitor not working -> Error Code Unsupported
    - Network Topology Layer 2 Services -> Device Type ciscoProducts.1465, Symbol Question Mark
    - VLAN Management -> Doesn't work
    - User Tracking > seems also not to work
When I open the report for supported devcies (Reports > System > Device Support) and search for C3560C... I find the following devices, but not mine which i need:
    C3560C-8PC-S     .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.1466
    C3560CG8PC         .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.1317
    C3560CCG8TC     .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.1318
    wsC3560CPD8ptS     .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.1368
Does anybody have experience with the same switch type / model? Am I doing something wrong or is this type of switch not implemented correctly till now? Further the docuemntation supported devices would be wrong.
    Thanks for any feedback Erich

  • VMware Tools on Cisco Prime LMS 4.1

    Hello,
I have just installed Cisco Prime LMS 4.1 from .ova file on a VMware architecture. My customer wants to know if the server is compatible with vmware tools.
I looked over Cisco documentation but it is never mentionned.
Has someone allready take a look into that ?
    Thanks,
    Regards,
    Abel JULIAN,
    Nextiraone FRANCE.

Yes, the datastore is located on a remote SAN so the original source won't be impacted by the loss of the ESXi. But in a perfect world (with VMtools), Vmotion will move VM from one ESX to another in case of failure, performance problem etc.
Those functions won't be accessible here, and the VM will need to be restarted manually and reaffected to another ESXi in case of failure. Like I said before, the LMS server is not a critical application so that is not a huge issue. The important is to know that Cisco does not support this feature.
Anyway, I have my answer so it is ok for me, I will notify my customer.
    Thanks you for your time,

  • Nexus 1000v, VMWare ESX and Microsoft SC VMM

    Hi,
Im curious if anybody has worked up any solutions managing network infrastructure for VMWare ESX hosts/vms with the Nexus 1000v and Microsoft's System Center Virtual Machine Manager.
There currently exists support for the 1000v and ESX and SCVMM using the Cisco 1000v software for MS Hyper-V and SCVMM.   There is no suck support for VMWare ESX.
Im curious as to what others with VMWare, Nexus 1000v or equivalent and SCVMM have done to work around this issue.
    Trying to get some ideas.
    Thanks

    Aaron,
The steps you have above are correct, you will need steps 1 - 4 to get it working correctly.  Normally people will create a separate VLAN for their NLB interfaces/subnet, to prevent uncessisary flooding of mcast frames within the network.
    To answer your questions
    1) I've seen multiple customer run this configuration
    2) The steps you have are correct
    3) You can't enable/disable IGMP snooping on UCS.  It's enabled by default and not a configurable option.  There's no need to change anything within UCS in regards to MS NLB with the procedure above.  FYI - the ability to disable/enable IGMP snooping on UCS is slated for an upcoming release 2.1.
This is the correct method untill the time we have the option of configuring static multicast mac entries on
the Nexus 1000v.  If this is a feature you'd like, please open a TAC case and request for bug CSCtb93725 to be linked to your SR.
This will give more "push" to our develpment team to prioritize this request.
Hopefully some other customers can share their experience.
    Regards,
    Robert

  • Prime LMS 4.2.1 Netconfig and Template TFTP/SSH issue

I have cisco Prime 4.2.1 installed and am trying to deploy templates and Adhoc Netconfigs. The jobs are failing with the following message:
Command(s) failed on the device TFTP: Failed on the device. SSH: Failed to establish SSH connection to 10.104.114.231 - Cause: Authentication failed on device 3 times.
If I deploy a Netconfig Task, say just adding a Syslog Server to the same switch it succeeds, no problem.
I am using Cisco ACS 5.2 - TACACS and have configured the tacacspromtps.ini file for the username and password prompt. I can log onto the switch with the Prime Account no problem using Telnet. SSH has not been configured on the switch. I can't find where the protocols for connecting to devices are configured within Prime LMS?

    hi gary,
based on my understanding, its because the device is not configured with SSH.
is the device running SSH enabled (K2 or K9) image? if yes, you can enable the SSH.
if no, then perhaps you want to try find it here to change it to telnet

So now if I buy the prime infrastructure licenses, will it work on LMS 4.0 or I need to upgrade? and how can I get the upgrade?
    Thanks..!

You would need to upgrade.  Prime Infrastructure 1.2 has LMS and WAN buildt in.

  • VMware ESX and dual homing

We are beginning to deploy VMware ESX servers for Windows production environments. How do I set up the VNICs to dual home the VM's to separate Catalyst 6500's.
    Thanks, Lisa

    Hi Steve,
Specific to VSS by itself, that is available and shipping today, but support for the FWSM with VSS is not yet available (as you have already noted :-). I am currently hearing Q3CY08 as a possible timeframe for supporting VSS and the FWSM, but that is not written in stone. In the mean time, you could still take advantage of VSS to do the multi-chassis EtherChannel, just not with the FWSM included.
Specific to the question on the quad mezz cards, I personally do not have any experience with this specific card, but do know that teaming/bonding software is getting better every day, but we all know that not everything works as advertised, so in that case (and actually, in every case if you think about it), any such design should be fully tested before going into production, to make sure it works as expected/desired.
In your post you mention the 3020 (HP Cisco blade switch). That does indeed throw a bit of a wrench in the works, since as you noted, the NICs will each go to separate physical switches in the enclosure, thus making EtherChannel type solutions on the server impossible. In that case, I normally recommend a simple Active/Standby form of teaming/bonding, as it is robust and deterministic (proprietary forms of Active/Active, in my experience, are neither). If you did decide to go with pass-thru (instead of 3020) to a VSS environment, you could then take advantage of the EtherChannel type teaming, but then you introduce the headache of all of those cables from the pass-thru's, which defeats one of the more common purposes many people go to blades, reduced cabling.
Another solution that would give you the best of both worlds in a blade enclosure (reduced cabling and EtherChannel teaming on the servers), is to look at the new 3120's just coming out. With their stacking ability, multiple switches look and act as a single logical switch (exactly like the 3750E), so when these are deployed in the enclosure and stacked, you can indeed use EtherChannel on the server NICs while still getting cable reduction for the enclosure.
    HTH, Matt

  • VMWARE ESX 3.5 and Netware 6.5

I want to Install a Netware 6.5 server in VMWARE ESX 3.5 in a
IBM x3650 with 2 CPU quad core.
But the guest SO wizard don't allow me to install more than
    1 CPU.
    Why is that?

Generally, Netware doesn't benefit from a second CPU. Of course
there are occasions where adding another CPU improves performance,
but Netware is IO bound, not CPU bound.
Under VMware, Netware will definitely perform better with a single CPU.
Netware does not idle the CPU, so when running under VMware, the
VMware tools idle the first CPU. If there are 2 CPUs, the second CPU
will always run at 100 percent utilization.
