Prime LMS 4.1: changing syslog facility

Hi,
I have to set up Prime LMS 4.1 soft appliance to a network containing devices that send syslog messages with facility local.6.
Devices logging to 3rd party NMS too, so canging the facility back back to the default value local.7 is not an option.
By default LMS stores and process syslog messages with facility local.7.
Is it possible to change this behaviour?
I changed config file /etc/syslog.conf manualy by adding the following line:
local6.info     /var/log/syslog_info
It had benn working well until I restarted the server.
After reload the contet os syslog.conf is reverted back. The line with local6.info is missing.
How should I permanently chang/add the receiving facilty?
Thanks,
Csaba Garai

Hi Marvin,
Thanks for the suggestion.
I tried to run the script but it did not solve the problem. After reload the syslog.conf reverted back without the line local.6.
Anyway the syslog daemon of the Soft Appliance OS receives and store incoming messages with ANY facility to file /var/log/messages.
The problem is that tha DFM only shows messeges  stored in file /var/log/syslog_info.
Any other idea?
Regards,
Csaba

  • SYSLOG Cisco Prime LMS

    Hi friends,
I have a question about my syslog from Cisco Prime LMS 4.1, the hours from this syslog in the LMS is diferent from my switch log.  I dont kown why.. I verified the hours betewen switch y the Cisco Prime is the same(the LMS is over Windows Server 2008R2) . both are the same log but in diferent hours about 5 hours.
maybe I have to configure the hours for Syslog in the Cisco Prime.
    Log from Switch
    Log from Cisco Prime LMS

If you have LMS, i am not sure, but if you have PI 1.2. Take a look at my post.
Basically, syslog feature doesn't work well. I could see couple of syslog through event / alarm, but syslog itself is not working properly.

  • Monitoring Dashboard - Syslog Alerts portlet (Prime LMS appliance)

We are using the Prime LMS appliance and have upgraded to 4.2.3.
Nothing is showing in the Syslog Alerts portlet on the Monitoring Dashboard.
If I click on the portlet title I go to the 24 Hour Syslog Report page.
This page has the standard settings and is set to run the report every 24 hours.
If I run it immediately, I get a nice long report of syslogs.
Nothing show in the portlet though.
I do not think DNS is populated with the device names & ip addresses (unsure how important this is).
Currently using the sysname (from SNMP) for device naming.
    Any help much appreciated.

  • Problem Syslog Prime LMS

For some time we have problems syslog collector prime LMS 4.2.5,  randomly we have no information about the syslogs..
We restart the process syslog collector and analyzer and syslogs working again.
Does anyone know this problem because it happens to us mons twice a week and you lose a lot of information on a network of 1,500 devices.
    thank you.

If your TACACS server is Cisco Secure ACS, you can try to import the users with the CLI utility below directly.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/ciscoworks_lan_management_solution/4.1/user/guide/admin/appendixcli.html#wp1064833
    Importing Users From ACS
To import users from ACS through CLI, enter the following commands:
•NMSROOT/bin/perl NMSROOT/bin/AddUserCli.pl -importFromAcs Filename Password (on Solaris/Soft Appliance)
•NMSROOT\bin\perl NMSROOT\bin\AddUserCli.pl -importFromAcs Filename Password (on Windows)
    where,
    •Filename — Ouput of executing CSUtil.exe.
•Password — ACS password which is the default password assigned to all users.
If you're running another TACACS server, you can export the user + pass from that, then import the list with a script built around the "NMSROOT/bin/perl NMSROOT/bin/AddUserCli.pl -add" utility:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/ciscoworks_lan_management_solution/4.1/user/guide/admin/appendixcli.html#wp1015980
In either case, hopefully the CLI tools would whine about or acquiesce to the dot in the username.

  • Changing server for Cisco Prime LMS 4.2 installation

    Hi,
I am planning to install Cisco Prime LMS 4.2 with 50 device license on a temporary server. My question is:
Can we install Cisco Prime LMS 4.2 on Server A, applied the license for 50 devices, and then several months later we uninstall LMS on Server A, reinstall it on Server B, and applied the same license for 50 users?
Is it possible and legal to do that? I am worry if the LMS license is binding to the first server's MAC address.
    Thanks in advance.

also :vmversion 4.1 and 5.1 both checked, hdd 256, scsi , memory 8 gig,

  • Prime LMS 4.2.1 Netconfig and Template TFTP/SSH issue

I have cisco Prime 4.2.1 installed and am trying to deploy templates and Adhoc Netconfigs. The jobs are failing with the following message:
Command(s) failed on the device TFTP: Failed on the device. SSH: Failed to establish SSH connection to 10.104.114.231 - Cause: Authentication failed on device 3 times.
If I deploy a Netconfig Task, say just adding a Syslog Server to the same switch it succeeds, no problem.
I am using Cisco ACS 5.2 - TACACS and have configured the tacacspromtps.ini file for the username and password prompt. I can log onto the switch with the Prime Account no problem using Telnet. SSH has not been configured on the switch. I can't find where the protocols for connecting to devices are configured within Prime LMS?

    hi gary,
based on my understanding, its because the device is not configured with SSH.
is the device running SSH enabled (K2 or K9) image? if yes, you can enable the SSH.
if no, then perhaps you want to try find it here to change it to telnet

  • Upgrade Cisco Prime LMS 4.0 to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.1

My company has asked me to migrate Prime LMS 4.0 to Prime Infrastructure 2.0 for a client and can not find the guide, the questions are? the migration is possible without an intermediate step? and There is a guide to update LMS 4.0 to PI 2.0 ??
    Thanks in advance.

Prime LMS 4.2.2 added support for the PI template directly:
    Export Data for Prime Infrastructure
Cisco Prime LAN Management Solution supports data migration to Prime Infrastructure 1.2. This feature enables user to export the Device Credentials Repository (DCR) data from LMS 4.2.x versions to Prime Infrastructure 1.2. The data backup status and backup location are displayed at the bottom of the Export Data for Prime Infrastructure page. The data being exported from LMS and the data imported back to PI are listed as follows.
    Data exported from LMS
    •Device Credentials Repository (DCR)
    •Software Image Management
    •Config Archive
    •Change Audit
    •Syslog
    Data Imported to PI

  • Migrate from Prime LMS to Prime Infrastructure

I'm currently running CiscoWorks LMS 4.0.1 on Windows 2003 under VMware and just got upgrade licensing for Prime Infrastructure 1.2.  I am assuming that I will need to upgrade the current server to Prime LMS 4.2 in order to ensure that data migration to Prime Infrastructure goes well.  I am planning to follow Cisco's recommendation to run Prime LMS and Prime Infrastructure in parallel for a time and migrate individual functions.
My real question is about Syslog handling.  All of the managed devices are currently sending Syslog data to LMS.  As a last step in the migration, is it possible to change the IP address of the Prime Infrastructure server to replace the Prime LMS server so that the Prime Infrastructure server will just start getting all the Syslog data, or do I need to go change hundreds of managed devices to point to a new address?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Putting LMS up against Prime Infrastructure is like comparing Apples to Oranges.
LMS is a very mature product and Prime Infrastructure is in it infancy stages...
My suggestion would be to leave the current LMS system up and running; bring a Prime Infrastructure server up with a Demo License; add a few of each type of device to your Prime Infrastructure server; setup a proof of concept scenario to prove you can do everything in Prime as you can do in LMS.

  • Cisco Prime LMS MPLS monitoring

Hi all, have anyone used Cisco Prime LMS for MPLS xconnect monitoring?
Currently when these traps arrive to Cisco Prime LMS they are classified as "InformAlarm Unidentified Trap Generic".
Is it maybe possible to load the correct MIB for these traps and get Cisco Prime LMS to understand them correctly?
The raw traps looks like this:
    xconnect down:
    09:58:42.352760 IP (tos 0x40, ttl 245, id 12, offset 0, flags [none], proto: UDP (17), length: 114) routerhost.51591 > lmshost.snmptrap: [udp sum ok]  { SNMPv1 { Trap(71)  E:cisco.10.106.2 10.130.1.13 enterpriseSpecific s=1 424011509 E:cisco.10.106.1.2.1.26.2=2 E:cisco.10.106.1.2.1.26.2=2 } }
    xconnect up:
    09:59:48.597894 IP (tos 0x40, ttl 245, id 14, offset 0, flags [none], proto: UDP (17), length: 114) routerhost.51591 > lmshost.snmptrap: [udp sum ok]  { SNMPv1 { Trap(71)  E:cisco.10.106.2 10.130.1.13 enterpriseSpecific s=2 424018144 E:cisco.10.106.1.2.1.26.2=1 E:cisco.10.106.1.2.1.26.2=1 } }
I found some more info about the traps at:
    http://tools.cisco.com/Support/SNMP/do/BrowseMIB.do?local=en&step=2&mibName=CISCO-IETF-PW-MIB-V1SMI
    BR /Crille

    Here is an update:
After discussing with TAC there seems to be 2 possible solutions in LMS right now:
    1. Create a threshold that monitors the specific OID for the xconnect vc and generate alarm if it changes.
    2. Configure the device to send syslog when a xconnect state changes and create an "automated syslog action".
I have not tried either of them yet so I dont know which one works best, but option 2 seems easiest (its a one time config).

  • Cisco Prime LMS Device Names

In Prime LMS 4.2, has anyone seen this issue/bug before?
I've added in all devices indicating their Device Names and Hostnames. However in the Monitor section and only High Severity Faults part, the Device Name is actually showing IP addresses.
In the Syslog report that sent via email, Device Name fields are showing IP addresses as well. Other sections or portlets are totally fine.
    Thanks.

    Hi Bin,
    Check the below link:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/ciscoworks_device_fault_manager/3.2/user/guide/useDevMg.html#wp1367517
Workaround to get the HOSTNAME in DFM is :
1> Added the Device Name and IP on the DNS Server or /etc/HOSTS file
2> Modified NMSROOT/objects/smarts/conf/discovery/discovery.conf, and changed the DisplayNameFormat from "AUTOASSIGNED" to "MIBIISYSNAME".
That caused DFM to display the sysName as the display name.
Also set the NameFormat to TM_USEAUTONAME, then restarted daemon Manager (net stop crmdmgtd && net start crmdmgtd )
3> Delete and re-add a device in DFM
    ============
Open name-resolver.conf file and make same changes that we have made in discovery.conf.  ie, the following entry should be there in this file also.
      #NameFormat = "TM_USESEEDNAME"
      NameFormat = "TM_USEAUTONAME"
    Thanks-
    Afroz

  • Any way to find unused ports in Prime LMS 4.2.3 ?

    Hi all,
We have just installed Prime LMS 4.2.3 (about a week ago), and it is pretty much working as expected, except for one thing - I cannot get any data back from the reclaim ports report.
I have tried both the Ports Up and Ports Down options, and have even taken the time frame down to one day, but always receive a "no records" result. Has anyone got this working?
Pretty much every other report I've tried so far returns results, just not this one.... We really need to use it to determine (over a period of time) what our actual port usage is for our replacement schedule over the next few years.
    -Pete

    Hi Afroz,
The detailed device report is really useful, as it contains the time of the port change - I ran it for the switch I was interested in, and then exported the data into Excel and sorted on port status and change date to get the info I needed.
I also ran the "Reclaim up ports" again with the interval set for 15 days with zero result, however when I changed this to 5 days I started to get some info - my guess is that the data that is needed  for this report is collected once every week or so.
My server has been running for nearly two weeks now, so I will let it do it's thing for about a month, then run the report again to get some better statistics.
Thanks for your suggestions, much appreciated !
    -Pete

  • Cisco Prime LMS appliance Compatibilty with Cisco Prime NCS

    Hi,
Is it possible if we can install Cisco Prime LMS 4.2 in the appliance which is inbuilt with Cisco Prime  NCS .
We have PILMS42-1.5K-U license available with us.
    Rgds,
    Kamal

One can install either LMS 4.2 or NCS on the a physical (software on PRIME-NCS-APL-K9 hardware) or virtual appliance (software installed on customer-provided VM).
The two products (NCS and LMS) cannot coexist on a given appliance instance. This is due to change in the future as LMS and NCS merge under the Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.0 release but for now they are distinct and separate products with a common approach and similar look and feel but requiring separate servers, whether physical or virtual.
Please refer to the ordering and licensing guide here.

  • Cisco Prime LMS disk cleanup

    Hi all,
What's the best way to tune cleanup in Cisco Prime LMS 4.2.2?
The following files are growing really large in my setup.
    \CSCOpx\log\SyslogCollector.log.1 (60GB)
    \CSCOpx\databases\rmeng\SyslogThird.db (30GB)
    \CSCOpx\databases\rmeng\SyslogSeccond.db (30GB)
How can I cleanup those files and in the future limit their size?

Create a syslog purge policy. Here is the reference link:
