Print at Home or Costco?

I have been holding off buying a printer (Epson 2880) because of the numerous complaints and problems with printing reported on the forum.
In the mean time, I am exporting my photos to Photoshop in ProPhoto, 16 bit, Sharpened for output and opened in PS. I soft proof using the profile provided by Dry Creek (http://www.drycreekphoto.com/icc/), follow their directions, upload to Costco, notify them by phone to be sure they print on the correct printer, and pick up my prints within the hour.
I am not a profession photographer, but my Costco prints look good to me, and they match my profiled monitor well. However, I do not have the experience to critically evaluate photos.
I would appreciate feed back from people who have compared prints from their own printers with Costco, or other Noritsu or Fuji mini lab prints. Are you satisfied with the quality of Costco prints? What, exactly, makes them better or worse than Ink Jet prints?

I too use costco and my Epson has been gathering dust (or clogging its head as usual). They provide outstanding quality and speedy service if you stay below 12x18. Their service that prints larger than 12x18 is horrid. Do not use them. You'll be quite disappointed. Below that, the quality you get is comparable to a very good inkjet print in my opinion. That said, there are pros and cons to both methods.
Home printing using a good inkjet:
Pros
-Choice of papers, including beautiful art papers
-widest gamut
-instant (more instant than 1 hour)
-no drive/bike ride necessary
- very sharp prints
Cons
-Expensive both in initial costs and per-print costs. Even if you print a lot you'll end up at about 2x the price of costco's
-requires lots of maintenance (clogged heads and such) if you don't print every day.
-Difficulty reliably getting correct color (I haven't experienced this, but lots of people have) due to badly written drivers and program/driver interfaces.
costco's (or other similar lab)
Pros
-Good gamut (not as good as the more expensive inkjets though)
-Profiles provide excellent color (see below for caveat)
-Very good Dmax (better than most inkjets)
-Fast (1 hour in general - see caveat)
-very fast with large quantities of smaller prints (far faster than you could ever do with an inkjet)
-Cheap
Cons
-Profiles sometimes cause color banding. There are instances where simply sending sRGB gives better results. This can also happen with many profiles for inkjet printers.
-No printing during off hours
-At least a psychological barrier to having prints made of racy subjects
-need to pick up prints or wait for a few days to arrive in the mail
-No special art papers
To me, it's a wash and I go by the cheaper option that gives great results. Others will make a different determination. I'd love to have a great very large format (i.e. bigger than 13x19) printer but financially that is not really in the cards.

  • I want to print some pictures at Costco

I want to print some pictures at Costco; which format, color space, 8bit, etc i need to use to export?
Generaly I import photos to Aperture in RAW format,I know TIFF is the best format to print but i'm not sure what kind of TIFF, if TIFF (8-bit) or TIFF (16-bit) and what color space, I know CYMK is the best but there are so many color profiles, and some times I heard that sRGB is fairly good.

    You'd have to ask costco.

  • Would like to print from laptop to printer at home. Printer is ethernet connected to NetGear Router

    HP PAvilion dv1000, Windows XP
Would like to print from laptop to printer at home.  Printer is ethernet connected to NetGear Router.
I had been able to print wirelessly from laptop to HP 7310 Officejet all-in-one, but now all I get is "document failed to print" message.  I can get documents to print on this printer using my smart phone, but not the laptop.
I have used "find printer" button on print screen and can see the printer to select.
    Any suggestions?

  • AirPrint laser printer for home that has "n" wifi capabilities

Looking for an AirPrint laser printer for home that has "n" wifi capabilities. Was shocked to findout that most lasers don't do "N" wifi or high speed networking yet. Am seriously considering the HP LaserJet Pro P1102w printer, but just found out it is a nightmare to setup. Thought I could run it by USB port off my Timecapsule… Is anyone doing that? Can it do that? Is there a better alternative?

    Hi Scott,
You can also setup the P1102w without the USB cable. What you need to do is to connect the printer via ad-hoc to your iPad first. With the default network settings the printer has its own SSID that you can select from the WiFi list on your iPad. Then open Safari and go into the EWS - either by the printers IP or host name. There you go to Network - Wireless and make the settings for your infrastructure network.
However, both Laserjets will need a FW update that you install from a Mac or PC, so you may already use the install steps there to connect your printer to the network.

  • I have a notebook that I need to print from to my printer at home. What options do I have?

You may have purchased a new ePrint capable printer and find yourself wanting to print to it without having to create an email.
Well, there is a way to simulate a traditional printing experience with ePrint from a notebook (or other mobile computer).
HP has the ePrint Mobile Driver which installs and behaves similar to a traditional printer, but it uses ePrint over the Internet to print.  In other words, you could be at the office and print to your home printer with relative ease without occupying email space to be sending it.
To get the ePrint Mobile Driver, simply sign in to your www.eprintcenter.com account and click on the download link on the right side towards the bottom of the news column.  Once there, click on your operating system to get the correct version.
A manual for the ePrint can be found here.  This will detail how to install the mobile driver and register the printer to it.

  • Problem with shared HP930C printer on home network

We have 2 networked computers at home -- one is Windows XP with an HP930C printer attached, the other is Windows Vista 32-bit with a Canon iP3600 attached.  Both printers are shared across the network.  Both computers will print to the Canon printer.  We used to able to use the HP printer from both computers.  Then it was detached for many months, and now we cannot use it from the Vista computer.
The HP printer can be seen from Control Panel of both computers.  But when we try to print from Vista, a dialog box appears and disappears so quickly that it cannot be read -- nothing appears in the printer queue and nothing prints.  I downloaded and ran the HP Home Network Diagnostic Utility on the Vista computer, but it did not find the HP printer.
I've checked everything I can think of, and I've run out of ideas.  Can anyone help, please?

Hello freemcb, and welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I see you are experiencing connectivity issues.  I would like to help.
I would recommend powering down the printer and computers.  Once they are off, I would recommend removing the power cord from the router and waiting 60 seconds.  After the alloted time, plug the router back in and let it broadcast, then power on the printer and computers.
I would also recommend utilizing this document on Wireless Printing Center Troubleshooting Issues.
Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!

  • Printing problems with a shared printer on home network

    Hi
I just upgraded all my Macs to Tiger. We have been running Panther very smoothly since it came out. We have a small home network running on a standard hub. The USB printer is attached to one of my G4s, and the rest of the network uses this as a printer connection.
I've been successfully printing to our HP 920C printer from all my programs for years now. Now that I've gone to Tiger, my printer Utility sees and registers the printer, but when I try to print to it from any of the Apple text programs, there is no response. I print from Illustrator with no trouble at all. TextEdit for example, sees the printer, but when I click the "PRINT" button from the print dialogue nothing happens. I am wondering why this is.
To note: I have added a line of code to the Terminal, which unblocks the system for Adobe Distiller to create PDFs (sudo killall -HUP cupsd). This was reccomended by Adobe with Panther in order to bypass a PDF function whithin Panther. I wonder if it was a mistake to add it to Tiger, and that it is this that is blocking TextEdit. If this is the case how do I remove the command, and reset the system to its default PDF setting.

It was a simple problem after all. Sadly my hard disc was about to snuff it. I changed disk, reinsalled Tiger and all is as smooth as ever.

  • How do I send email and web pages to a shared printer on home network. I verified that I can send documents to the shared printer.

My home network (one wireless computer using Windows 7--the other using Windows XP) share a printer, but I can't send web pages or email to the shared printer. I can send documents to the printer, so I know that connection is set up properly. Could Firefox be blocking this function? If so, how do I configure it. Both computers use Firefox exclusively.
== I never could share the printer when on websites.

  • Is it necessary to convert photos from RBG to CMYK if you are just printing at home?

I am new to the creative suite, and I am using InDesign for a class presentation. I was told I should convert any photoshop images that I use from RGB to CMYK for printing, but I am just printing it at home on my little deskjet.
Second question: If it IS necessary, why do I get a alert in photoshop saying "You are about to convert to CMYK using 'U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2' profile. This may not ve what you intend." What does this mean and should I just ignore it?
Thanks in advance for any advice you may have!

The advice you got was specifically for sending a project to a CMYK printing press. Converting to CMYK has been the traditional requirement for those jobs, from the era when most images were printed and most printed images went to a CMYK press.
But it's been many years since that was true. Some InDesign workflows can use RGB images if you set up InDesign to do the conversion to CMYK at output, or if the digital press will be doing the conversion. A lot of digital home printers and newer digital printing presses are set up to work with RGB images. For example, you don't send CMYK images to the lab to have printed enlargements and photo books made, you send RGB. As far as your home inkjet goes, it uses different ink colors than U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) CMYK (some printers use six inks or more), so converting to CMYK wouldn't even match up properly with the inks being used.
That's the reason you see the alert message. It's no longer a world where you convert all images to CMYK to print, so Photoshop is making sure it's something you actually need to do. Because if you convert to CMYK when you don't need to, your images will look worse because CMYK doesn't provide as many colors as RGB.

  • How can I resize photos to print at home?

I am trying to print photos to card in my home printer. I cannot find a way to resize the photo so all of it fits within a frame on an A4 sheet. Whatever I try I end up with just a section (central) of the original.

select the photo and crop to the desired size and print - select the printer, papers size and print size and print - select any printer specific options and print to print it
The general answer to printing multiple photos on a page is to select the photo(s) and crop to the desired print size - print and select the printer, print size (all must be the same) and paper (do the math and be sure they will fit and a reasonable border between them) and click customize - in the settings select multiple photos per page - and print , select any printer specific options and print to actualy print

  • Just need a cheap printer for home use

Can sombody suggest a cheap color printer (say around $50) that I can use at home to just print simple documents. I want something I can hook in to my Airport Extreme by USB, that will let me print from both a PC and a Powerbook running Tiger.
I just bought a Lexmark Z735, and it doesn't seem to be at all Mac compatible. There are no Mac drivers, even on their website.

    Hi,
I found a really great ink jet printer for you that will work with both Mac & PC. It is from Epson and only costs $59.99. The Epson Stylus C68 offers the perfect solution for fast, affordable home printing. You can print your simple documents as well as photos too. Visit this link to learn more:

I did check out the Lexmark Z735 and you are correct, there is no driver supported for the Mac. It is for PCs only.

  • Can I connect a printer to home hub to print wirel...

    Hi
My first post, hope someone can help. I've just signed up to BT for my broadband (I'm still with Orange until the change over goes through).
I can currently print from my wireless laptop (downstairs) to a printer (upstairs) that is plugged into the USB port on my Orange Livebox. Will I still be able to connect a printer to the new BT home hubs USB port & print wirelessly? (The printer doesn't have its own wireless capability & I doubt I'd be able to get hold of the required "optional parts" anymore as the printer is a few years old.)
    Regards
    Mick.

    HI Mick,
I believe the home hub has a USB port - if not it iwll be ethernet. Someone with it will comment I am sure as I have the v2.0 and it does have a USB port

  • Colour laser printer for home use [sorry to post here]

    Hi,
I am looking to buy a colour laser printer (UK) for use at home mainly for printing documents, pdf files, etc. and use a Mac Pro (hence the link to these forums). I need a network and duplex function. I have been looking at HP's 2605dn but would appreciate your recommendations.
I am sorry to post here

Hey don't be sorry. How are you going to learn? Just before moving from OS/2 to OSX I purchased an HP2500N Color LaserJet. It worked nicely under OS/2 but lacked a few features. I waited a month before connecting it up to my Mac Pro because I feared it would need special drivers and a lot of hand-holding. What a surprise - I plugged it in via USB and printed a web page lickity-split! And the thing churns out the most beautiful copies. It is louder then I like (and I keep it in a pull-out cabinet to mute it) and use it daily. I rarely print in black and white any more - everything is in color (even my billings!).

  • Printing at Home

How do I print from my phone to home printer?

    Hey d8,
    1. In order to printer from the phone, you need to have a smart phone with internet access.
    2. Once you enable ePrint in your printer, you will have a printer code that you need to register at hpeprintcenter.com.
    3. After the account is setup, you can send an email to the printer's email address and it will print the email out.
Your printer MUST be an ePrint printer in order for this service to work. Here is a link to help you setup ePrint:
