Print booklet in inDesign not printing correctly

I have been having issues with the print booklet feature of inDesign CS6. I am doing a half letter layout. the pages are laid out as the end user would see them. when I click on print booklet and set all of the print settings, everything is fine. the preview show the spreads correctly. example (the back cover and front cover are on one spread with the back being on the left). problem is, once I print, the back cover is replaced by a blank page and the back is then placed on spread 3. page 1 is then placed where the blank inside cover should be.   I mad a 12 page blank document and placed only page numbers on the pages and then printed booklet. the preview was correct and the printed output was also correct. as soon as I add any other elements to the pages, it no longer prints correctly.
this is extremely frustrating. I have wasted a day and a half trying to troubleshoot and get this to work. At this point I am going to lay out the pages the way I want them to print and then rearange them to view properly in PDF, either that or go back to using Quark. anybody know what may be causing this.

Wow, never would have thought you would have that option twice. That seemed to do the trick! Thank you so much. I owe you one!

  • Trouble printing booklets with Indesign from CS4

Hello. I am trying to print a booklet from indesign. It is 12 pages and I
wish to print it on 8.5 by 5.5 booklet. The file was produced on 8.5 x 11 pages and I want to print 1 spread to each landscaped 8.5 x 11 sheet. When I try to do this using 2 page saddle stitch setting, it prints each spread in a portrait orientation on one page. Also, when I do manage to get it to print a spread to each page, it doesn't print all the pages. My printer is a Xerox workcentre 7428. I downloaded a global driver to Windows parallel in order to access the fold and staple mode of the printer, as my regular printer driver doesn't allow these settings to show up. Can anyone help me?

What's really strange is it used to work. I can't recall what my settings were to make it work. Anyhow, the document was created as pages in consecutive order as I would want them to appear in the book when a person is reading. Pg 1, pg 2, pg 3, and so on. The problem is that each individual page is portrait oriented 8.5x11 pages. The spreads used to print out properly until I changed my printer drivers to take advantage of the fold and staple function in the printer I am using. The old driver didn't see these parts of the printer. When I try to print booklet it messes up the printing so that it either prints the booklet as pieces of each page per page in a portrait orientation, or it doesn't print out all the pages! *sigh* Sending it to a professional printer is not an option, as the printer was purchased to provide us with a professional type print job. I'm going to try messing around with it a bit more and see if I can figure it out.
I'm not sure I understand the answers I was given. How does the print booklet setting differ from print.

  • Print booklets from InDesign.

I used to create print booklets from InDesign but this option disappeared with version CS5. Is Adobe doing anything about restoring this feature? What are my options in the meantime?

    Are you patched to 5.0.4?
I run XP SP2, rather than 3, and Acrobat 9 pro (now at version 9.3.2) and I haven't had a problem using Print Booklet to make a PDF, so I suspect either it's something in SP3, or more likely a problem on the system.
First thing might be to try replacing your preferences. See Replace Your Preferences
Next might be to unistall the PDF printer and reinstall it (does it work outside of Print Booklet?). Make sure you update Acrobat first, if you haven't already done so.
If neither of those works, see if there's anything else running in the background that could be causing a problem.
Finally, if nothing is working, it's time to look at a scripted solution. I know two scripts, both by Dave Saunders, that can handle simple two-up saddle stitch impositions without creep. One is better than the other if you have objects crossing the spine, but neither is as sophiticated in what it can do as Print Booklet, which can handle perfect binding with various signature sizes.

This can be the result of selecting the wrong driver. An older, unsupported laser printer will sometimes work with the generic Postscript driver.

  • Why does "Print Booklet" from Indesign CS5.5 only create low res pdf? How do I get High Res for Offs

Long time ID user in Agency. Created a simple 4 page brochure in CS5.5 ID. Facing pages for cust size 11x17 half fold document.
Generating the pdf for Press and HQ Print renders a nice high res document, but the print booklet feature only produces a skinny low res version. Tried to mess with the printer settings, but the result is the same with a skinny low res document.
I didn't want to recreate the brochure as a two page manually imposed as I like the option of being able to add more pages in increments of four of course. Plus it's just silly to do that when ID is supposed to handle it for me.
I worked around it this time by printing to .ps output then distilling, and then splitting the document so printer could have a "front" and "back" 11x17. But this seems kludged big time. This has to be a bug unless I am missing something.

You probably never changed the default settings in the PDF printer properties. In the print booklet dialog, click the Print Settings button, then the Setup button at the bottom of the Print Dialog that pops up, choose the PDF printer and click on Preferences. Reset the default reset the default settings to the ones you really want to use, or reset them in Windows... Control Panel > Devices and Printers... Double-click the PDF printer, then from the print queue dialog, Printer > Properties... General tab and clcik the Preferences button.

  • Samba cups and windows 8: printer spools but will not print.

    Hello,
I have samba and cups setup. I have been trying to connect to my windows printer. Here is my setup
    Arch linux linux-3.12.1-3
    samba-4.1.2-1
    cups-1.7.0-2
    Windows 8.1
    no firewalls
    Samba config

    security = user
    #passdb backend = tdbsam
    #username map = /etc/samba/smbusers
    workgroup = Bobshouse
    encrypt passwords = yes
    wins support = yes
    log level = 1
    max log size = 1000
    read only = no
    #disable netbios = yes

    map archive = yes
    [Shared]

for cups some things I have tried are
    lpd://hostname/printer
    smb://username:password@hostname/printer_name
I can see the printer with smbclient
So the printer spools, but will not print. the paper does not move I just hear the printer. Also when I watch the print queues in windows and linux. Cups shows that it sent the document, but when I watch the windows queue it shows the document, but the size of the document stays at 32 kb out of 1.8 mb and says printing. I hope this makes sense. I am just trying to keep things very simple at this point. I just want to understand what the problem is and build on it.

Please provide the following relevant information so someone can help including:
    Printer Model - done
Complete and Detailed Problem Description -
Operating System of computer (including service pack revision) - done
Connection Method - USB, Hardwired LAN, Wireless? -
Make and model of router and modem? -
Error messages - on printer screen and/or computer, any blinking light patterns?
If wireless, when the problem occurs, what is status of Blue Wireless light on printer, on, off or blinking? –

  • CS4 InDesign not printing correctly on HP1320 LaserJet for 2-sided booklets

I'm trying to print chapters in a book, using 2-sided printing from CS4 InDesign (V 6.0.4) to an HP1320 LaserJet printer using an iMac computer. This used to work with CS InDesign (V 3.0.1) using a Dell PC and the same printer. The page prints on both sides, but is limited to 8.5 inches of the 11 in side.  [My pages are 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 with two pages on one side of the page; when finished, the book is 5 1/2" by 8.5".] I've tried lots of combinations of page orientation in both the InDesign File/Print Booklet/Print Settings.../Setup and in the File/Print Booklet/Print Settings.../Printer... but nothing seems to solve this. Any suggestions?  Thanks.

You need to be sure the print dialog is set up to print the pages in landscape orientation.
    -=-=-=-=-
I'd be happy to try. Here are the steps I take, but you should realize that I've done this so many times over the past several days (up to a couple of weeks) that I try different things each time.
I've got a couple of book projects that use similar formats. One is a textbook and the second is a daily log I keep (not always "daily"). Both are printed and bound to become books that are on the order of 400 to 500 pages and are 8.5" by 5.5" in size.  So, I have a file I want to print and I want it to come out with side-by-side 5.5 x 8.5" pages (two on each side of an 8 1/2 by 11 inch sheet of paper (i.e., two sided printing).
In InDesign, I click on File, Print Booklet..., and here is what the window looks like: [see attached file "Screen shot 2009-12-02 at 5.51.44 PM.pgn.]
To get it to show "Booklet Type: 2-up Saddle Stitch," I had to click on "Print Settings" at the bottom and select "Setup" and then "Orientation: landscape (2nd from the left on the choice of four orientations)."  I also usually go to "Page Setup..." and make sure I chose "Orientation: landscape."
Then I go to the "Printer..." button at the bottom of the "Print" window and select things so it looks like this:  [see attached file "Screen shot 2009-12-02 at 5.57.44 PM.pgn.]
To get this, I had to click on the "Layout" option and then "Booklet Printing." That automatically selected "Two-Sided" printing.
As far as choices go, I think that is it.
The page that printed most recently with those settings came out with four (not two) pages on each side of the page. Further, the four pages that printed on the back side of the sheet of paper were upside down relative to those on the front side. This may be the result of using "2-up Saddle Stitch" but I'm not sure of that.
But here is the problem that has really been bugging me: the pages on one side of the paper don't go as far toward the margin as they should. Here is one example of low-res pictures of the front of the page that printed.
The page shows two full "pages" along the left top and right top, but along the left and right bottom pages, only about half of the pages printed.  The back side of the sheet of paper was similar, with only half of the "pages" showing for two of the four pages on this side.
So, I hope this is enough information for you. I'd be happy to provide more if needed. And thank you for even attempting to help. I've been struggling with this issue for a couple of weeks (I'm retired, so I sure don't spend full time on it, but I sure have spent hours at it, all to no avail).

  • Print Booklet in Indesign cs6 doesn't line up correctly

Has anyone had luck with the "Print Booklet" tool to proof a multi-page catalog? I tried printing double sided on a Canon ir4035 and found that the front and rear sides didn't line up.
I'm thinking of buying a nice new 12 x 18 color laser, and I want to make sure that "print booklet" really works on double sided printers before spending the money.
    Thanks,
    John

I suspect the problem is not InDesign, but the printer. Printers in this class just don't have the same sort of tolerances that a printing press can achieve for sheet-to-sheet and front-to-back registration. It's not unusual to see as much as 1/8 in overal drift through a print run. If the misalignment is fairly uniform you could consider printing to PDF (windows) or postscript and distilling (mac), then place the PDF into a new file and shift every other page to compensate.

  • Creating booklets in CS4 (not printing)

You could make a booklet out of CS2 through the "Print booklet" feature. It would create a second file that was booked correctly so you could proof any of the background graphics.
How can I do this in CS4???

Print Booklet was introduced with CS3 and remains unchanged in CS4. CS2 used a plugin called InBooklet SE which is no longer available because the vendor was purchased by Quark.
The major difference is that InBooklet allowed you to impose and create a new file, but it was very buggy and often caused problems. Print Booklet only allows you to impose and print, so if you want a screen proof you must print to PDF and open that.
An alternative is to use one of the imposition scripts that are available, but the one I use is not capable of dealing with cross-spine elements, and I suspect from your post that you have background images that span the spreads.

  • Problems with 'Print Booklet' from InDesign CS4

I am having problems using the 'Print Booklet commane in InDesign CS4. I have done this 100s of time from CS3 with no problems but for some reason it just won't auto duplex (print on both sides of the paper) when I do it from CS4. USing exactly the same settings, computer and file. The printer is setup correctly as will print double-sided automatically from other apps. Using mac leopard. Any ideas?

Unfortunately, I have tried this. I choose 'layout' from the printer option within the driver  and pick 'short edged binding'. Still no luck.

  • Printing "Form Fields Only" not working correctly in Adobe XI

I have a pdf form with fields including check boxes. If I print this form with all fields it prints correctly, but if I select "Form Fields Only" then all check boxes print as checked regardless of whether or not they are checked. When I use this form in earlier versions of Adobe I do not get this problem. Any ideas or solutions?

Also the "PrintParams" properties require version 6 or above of Acrobat/Reader.
One has to review the Acrobat JavaScript API for all sorts of version variations in the way Acrobat's JS object works. And the documention is not always correct.

  • Printing on HP P1505 not printing correctly yet Explorer 9 works on same web site with same printer.

I have download the latest software for Firefox and the HP P1505 printer, but the pictures within the web site print correctly. The text information is not printing correctly. Lots of spaces and the font is a mess. You can read the text information, but it is all over the page. Firefox did print with no issues before 4.0b12. It always worked with the version 3 of course. I really do not want to go back to 3 as 4 is better except for this issue.

This is a known issue in Firefox 4 beta 12. You could wait til' the RC comes out, or you could grab one of the latest nightly builds availible here that fix this problem: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/nightly/latest-mozilla-central/
Just a note though, nightly versions of firefox are generally less stable than betas or releases. I am waiting for the Release Candidate to come out myself. (Should be early next week)

Printing booklet in duplex on 6500a+ printer with the following print settings is not working. I have no problem printing this same booklet duplex on the 6500 base printer.
The problem wasn't the 6500a+, it was MS Word 2007. With MS Word 2010, it printed the booklet in duplex just fine. Here's the matrix:
